Yes. Just install the Maintenance Mode plugin and you’re good to go developing BP in main site. No need to develop BP in secondary blog. You can even add some styling or image/s to Maintenance Mode page while you’re at it.

I’m also experiencing issues with both login and logout not showing the user being logged in in the top bar (even thouch caching for logged in users has been disabled). Has anyone been able to determine the optimal settings for buddypress + w3 total cache yet?

I had a very brief look. It has the very big advantages of being easy to set up and integrate with one’s theme. It’ll be a nice choice for people who need something very quick and easy.

From a brief look, the code is written in such a way that doesn’t even make an attempt to be extensible for developers. In that sense it’s not even in the same league as BuddyPress.

I’m very glad to see that the market is fleshing out with fundamentally different kinds of solutions!

thanks, @DJPaul from what you’ve seen, is it likely to make core any time soon?

Just had a look. Seems to make it easy for users who have no programming skills. I wonder how easy it would be for a developer to bend it to ones will? I guess it can’t match BP in that area and for me that’s what counts, really.

@Svenl77 Tested it late last month. Aside from the similarity with Mingle plugin and with upcoming BP version 1.3 of rendering components as pages, WP Symposium still has some way to go before it can become a serious contender of BuddyPress which handles a full grown network of users and sites.

Having said that, the development of WP Symposium is coming along fast and looks like Simon Goodchild is meeting deadlines, so big kudos to him. Also, initial testing shows I can activate WP Symposium in each subsite (though a bit buggy in my install) so that’s a big plus for those who are looking for a social engine for each subsite. I can only surmise that if there were more devs helping Simon, it’ll be really cool plugin to use.

In dashboard menu BuddyPress > Components, do not enable private messaging. Other than that, anyone can request for and possibly get a response for contact information whether they post in forums or blog posts.

If you want to disable BP’s registration and user account activation pages: In your functions.php or in a custom plugin:

@hnla, and @xberserker, I figured out the culprit to this, but I am not sure why it does not take until 1.2.6 to happen.

The double button is because you have called 2 stylesheets from the same buddypress default.css. The most common mistake is the css from the bp template pack being applied, and than calling the same css from the bp-themes/bp-default/css/default.css. You need to remove one, and it should solve the double button issue.

Thanks guys, thanks to @Travel-Junkie ‘s code, I am now able to make an exception for the Links Directory, based on the ‘links’ slug.

However, I’ve now also been asked if we can’t get the individual link page (www.website.tld/links/…) to be an exception too… Can I count on you again?

There are lots of CSS hooks so you can customize the look of your messages pages. It would be easiest to just use some creative theming and create the effect. You could hide most profile information/avatar using CSS.

Or you could also try creating a custom page template using the private messages loop and adjust the parameters to suit your needs.

If you go to /buddypress/bp-blogs/bp-blogs-classess.php and along line 80 you’ll see:

If you change it to:

It will show any blog that doesn’t require a login. You can change the -1 to what every level of privacy you want.

@tubruk to troubleshoot why you can’t create groups, you will need to strip down to default BuddyPress installation because a custom theme or a plugin may be interfering with what can easily be done – creating groups – with a clean BuddyPress installation.

That’s why I suggest that you change your theme to default theme and deactivate all plugins except BuddyPress. Clear cache. Then see if you can create groups.
– If you can create groups, then change theme back to your custom theme and check if you can create groups. If not, then the problem is your custom theme. Contact theme author.
– If you can create groups, then activate BP plugins one by one to see which one is interfering with your group creation. If a plugin interferes with your group creation, contact plugin author.

Sounds like a transition from 1.2.5 to 1.2.6 and custom theme pages not updated .

Do you mean a different home page when logged in or you just want activity on home page? That’s easily done by going to settings > reading in admin and then choosing activity stream as the static front page.

This has already been built (we paid for it).

Works really well, dwenaus did a superb job on it, maybe dwenaus would like to package it into the official plugin?
