I’ve decided not to use multisite as it seems the site may need to be kept on it’s own.
i still need to find out if it’s possible to have a page of downloads that’s only visible to signed in members?

I have known situations where things simply have stalled or appear to have, and one has had to chance it and just navigate back to the dashboard where things were found to actually have completed, I’m not suggesting that this is the case here or that you chance interrupting the process, but that is a long time to wait.
In all honesty I would never upgrade BP this way, I always perform a manual removal and upload of fresh files via ftp or zip upload.

I agree with @rogercoathup on the lack for media, and re-inventing the wheel. But it appears there is still need for further expansion in the media, maybe a wanna have or desire in the next release

Yes, the display of the activity entries is one of the most annoying / difficult things about theming BuddyPress – too much UI information is embedded and fixed in the core.
The best approach I can see for your issue is to hook a function onto the bp_activity_permalink filter.
Your function would have to check if the activity was your new component type, and if so, strip out the permalink info from the string (PHP string hacking), and insert a revised permalink based on your requirement.
@mercime sorry the mention of ‘very odd’ wasn’t meant as a criticism of BP Gallery, more that users will find that facility to upload from that point in the site slightly confusing – as has already been highlighted to me so it’s not my supposition at work here, however all it needs is some UI clarity which I’m happy to work in so that users are clear what features do without them having to find out by trial and error e.g on an icon you MUST always provide an alternative means to identify it as a link, and an image MUST have an ‘alt’ attribute this is proscribed and not optional as well one may also decide to add perhaps title attribute to the anchor.
But far more importantly the issue that the thread alludes to is not one of BP Gallerys making, BP gallery isn’t at fault here it was never supposed to provide the ability to add a simple image directly to ones updates, or was it? have I missed something really obvious here in it’s functionality?
Well, I decided to re-install WordPress, Multi-Site, BuddyPress… basically EVERYTHING and completely start over from scratch. Maybe that was going overboard, but it was my only option. It is now showing the members and friend requests as it should for just my 2 test accounts, but now I need to figure out a way of bring over the data, posts and WP users from the old site without disturbing what I have working now. Any ideas?

I’d love to get a plugin to match certai nfields against certain other fields win wp profile and bp profile!
You might want to go over other WP configurations which need to be working well before installing BuddyPress for a less bumpy ride later..

@hnla – the only time the upload didn’t work for me fwas after I upgraded to WP 3.0 and it was my fault for not double-checking the necessary change in .htaccess was done, I just assumed it did Needless to say that you wouldn’t have made that kind of error at all. What did @sbrajesh say about your situation? He has helped many others with their installs – even checking the servers and configurations.
Since BP Gallery has multiple file uploads with group albums as well as single user albums, the way he structured the plugin was the most logical way IMO. Personally, the bottom line for me is that as long as the plugin is working according to plan and the community members are happy with their user and group albums, so am I I’m looking forward to the BP Gallery upgrade after BP 1.2.6 rolls out.
Ok….. time to release 1.2.6 now everyone is back and the gang is all here……

WordPress sends emails automatically to the admin (you I presume!).
If you are not getting those mails when you create users in wp-admin, then your mail isn’t configured properly in WordPress (as with ‘freeriders’ system in the thread I gave you).
You need to fix that before proceeding with BuddyPress install.
Look in the WordPress Codex for details on setting up / configuring the mail settings.
