ParticipantIt’s not possible with the default BuddyPress, but is possible to code – it is a fairly substantial task.

ParticipantThen you have a WordPress / server config problem. You should fix this before installing BuddyPress.
You need to ask your server company and / or go onto the WordPress forums

ParticipantPersonally not downloaded a zip as I use SVN to grab the branch, but if you don’t have a folder after unzipping called ‘buddypress’ then yes you’ll have to rename it, it’s one of those suck it and see questions reallly.

Memberbecause my photo & video plugin were designed for 1.2.3 and if I want to upgrade to their newer version I have to pay to upgrade basically.
The plugins work fine as they were, I just need to get the older buddypress plugin activated again so they start working like before.
Do I need to rename the zip file? WP doesnt seem to take it as is with the downloaded file name…

ParticipantYes, you can install WP 3.0.1 in physical subdomain and go multisite in subdirectory mode. See BuddyPress configurations available here:

ParticipantWhy not upgrade to 1.2.6 when it becomes available in a few days or download the zip for the branch here and test it to see if it works for your site with those plugins. Alternatively, update the plugins to work with the latest BP version.

ParticipantWP 3.0.1 would be the best install with BuddyPress 1.2.6 (released this coming weekend).
But before walking through too much detail, is there a reason you want BuddyPress on a subdomain? Is WordPress installed on the main domain?
Now, it is possible to install BP and have members create blogs using subdomains .. but maybe you have a different purpose for putting the whole community on the subdomain .. which is also possible.
There are a growing number of great themes for BuddyPress:
http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/buddypress-magazine-theme
Also, you can take any WP theme and modify it to match the community by using the template pack.

MemberOk thanks, it downloaded as tags_1.2.3-r3295.zip
It installed successfully, but when I tried to activate it I got The plugin does not have a valid header.
I assume its because of the file name?
What should I rename the zip file so that when it uploads it it will install & overwrite?
Thanks.

Participant@boonebgorges: Thanks!
@cryptidresearch: Thanks for your feedback!
1) as Sven mentioned above, the next version comes with variable header height.
2) good idea, there’ll be an option for this in the next version!
3) I will also have a closer look on the title..
You can play around with style.php and both .css-files, but all changes will be gone with the next update.October 14, 2010 at 5:16 pm #95180Hugo Ashmore

Participant@hnla – installed the branch the other day and pagination still doesn’t work on the activity stream. Decided to look at the way I had it done in the child theme but am not done.

ParticipantYou mean ‘Roadmaps’? Last discussion we had seemed to think they were not that important.
https://trac.buddypress.org/roadmap
Or:
https://buddypress.org/about/roadmap/
You can create a ticket under the 1.3 milestone as an enhancement.

MemberYes I ran only the Buddypress plugin & the BuddyPress Default 1.2.5.2 by BuddyPress.org theme
Any ideas on what we could look at in the default theme/plugin?
If its posting to MY wall, why wouldnt it post to the Activity Stream then when I’m actually replyin ON the Activity Stream page?

Participant@boonebgorges Can you point me to the dev plan for buddypress – where it is planning on going for the next few versions kind of thing, I remember seeing that around at some point.
Gratitude Boone!
(Or for that matter anyone else who can answer my questions..

Hugo Ashmore
ParticipantLook at your bp admin section, you will see the custom profile link you use that to create new groups and fields, as long as a new group is created under the ‘Base’ level then it will appear on the registration page.
@dorothysulzmann
As a workaround I would move the three type selections labeled ‘Fan off’? to just after the primary details and use the tree types as just that to confer a user type to each member but also run a simple jQuery show/hide on the further groups so all are hidden and then a check is performed to catch the radio selection and the appropriate group revealed with perhaps a ‘none’ control selection default. The proper approach would be to complete a section and then pass the form control fields in a session or buffer to the next view to complete further sections but with BP that will likely start to get complicated, as techguy says there is no quick easy way to do this but with client side scripting it wouldn’t be that difficult.

Keymaster@hnla Of course, it would have to be optional. Generally I think this points to a larger issue of BP data portability – but that’s probably a collection of tickets
October 14, 2010 at 11:39 am #95146Boone Gorges
KeymasterIt’s not possible (without doing some fancy MySQL work), but it’s a really nice idea (kinda like how WP handles user content when the user is deleted). Maybe you could file an enhancement ticket on http://trac.buddypress.org?

ParticipantYes, all these things are possible with Buddypress. There are a great many plugins designed specifically for the BP environment that can enable you to build a powerful community. For your specific needs, it may be necessary to do a bit of custom coding, but here are a few examples to get you started:

https://buddypress.org/community/groups/welcome-pack/

Participant@johnnyscience – sounds like a javascript / CSS problem to me – are you definitely running with the vanilla BuddyPress install AND the BuddyPress default theme.
No CSS or HTML changes at all?
The default theme uses javascript routines to display a lot of the reply code – if you are using a different theme, you need to also modify your javascripts to ensure they still work

ParticipantI was also wondering this? To be specific I need to know how many members of each group we have, how many members in each country, how many mambers in each university (Our community is an academic research community), etc?
Is there an easy way to do this with buddypress?

Not utterly sure why.
Ideally we need to be testing this proposed release candidate as much as possible I’ve run 1.2.6 or more accurately the 1.2 branch on local test installs for a while and it feels solid, if others wish to try on test installs and they can grab a zip from:

ParticipantAs rogercoathup mentioned, before installing BuddyPress double-check if your WP installation is up to the task.
