I started this group on the site to talk about BuddyPress hosting: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/buddypress-hosting/forum/ It could still use some more submissions from people who use BuddyPress and their hosting environments/experience, but it’s a good start.August 22, 2010 at 6:38 am #89953Hugo Ashmore
ParticipantThe server is fine from that link it suggests you have a VPS which is effectively your own server to configure as you wish which is good, however that doesn’t mean it is set up 100% effectively, but for the moment one assumes it is.
– I had buddypress activated as a plug in on a site (which is a custom wordpress theme) when i visit it I am logged in as admin and a bar comes acrross the top of my screen Please seee http://blokmovaz.com/screenshot.png for a screen shot
This statement is a massive stumbling block as it tends to contradict other statements, ‘activated on a site’ ? on a site what site? This is what I was trying to establish, as earlier you say BP was/is being activated for the primary WP install – I am assuming it is.
Can you confirm that going into dashboard -> themes and deliberately activating the BP-default theme i.e removing any custom theme or otherwise from the proceedings, ensuring that any custom settings are removed for static pages under ‘General -> Reading’ settings page; so that we have an absolutely default BP install at work, the main page by default should be blog posts.

ParticipantI don’t think this was ever resolved. It’s a big shame. Profile Field Filtering would make finding people within a community SO much easier…and being found is a big reason why many people would even want to join our communities.

ParticipantI’m for anything speeding up the process… BuddyPress is on the verge of taking off and “taking over”. I check the trac daily to see where we are in the process and help as much as I can… mainly because I NEED to get some of these seemingly basic fixes accomplished. The guys you’ve mentioned above are very SHARP, but there are time/money & commitments/constraints involved…
I firmly believe that once the 1.2.6 patch is released the BuddyPress platform will have shaken off it “childhood” stage and be primed to be THE major contender in the field of Social Media Platforms. Once “we”/”They” knock out 1.2.6 (and fix the issues with searching the BuddyPress Site and Site Spammers) the sky is the limit and people are going to begin to look at the fledgling “ugly duckling” of WordPress as the SWAN that it is.
BuddyPress is on the tarmac waiting to fly… it won’t be long now…

Can you tell me how you did that? I need a twitter share button for activity and have been going crazy trying to find a plugin to do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated!August 22, 2010 at 3:24 am #89946In reply to: Date shown in Default BP theme

ParticipantHey @r-a-y I ran into this today as well… This fix is as you said in the files you said.
Simply delete the existing line and add this line to the files in question:
-?php the_time(‘F j, Y’); ?- at -?php the_time(‘g:i a’); ?-
Change – (minus signs) to PHP angled brackets.Seems like this should be in the default-theme from the get-go… maybe a ticket?

MemberDidn’t mean where the actual files were located that is a given they have to be in the plugin folder. More what I was trying to establish is that you were not trying to do something out of the ordinary such as BP running on a sub blog of the main blog install.
– Oh no it is installed on the servers root. I have a linode server http://www.linode.com/ that wouldn’t have anything to do with it would it?
So you have an absolute basic default install of WP/BP? WP installed in main document root of the site and BP activated as a plugin of that primary WP install?
– correctWhen you try changing your permalink structure after saving do you get any messages returned along the lines of not being able to write to .htaccess , although I guess if it’s taking a manual ‘index.php’ it must be?
I did get this at first but i then changed my permissions on the .htcess and then reset the permalinks and didnt get an error. Can you tell me what the page is I’m looking at when I land on the site as it’s not a buddypress default layout or what looks like a child theme, I’m assuming that you haven’t activated BP or rather left BP activated.
– I had buddypress activated as a plug in on a site (which is a custom wordpress theme) when i visit it I am logged in as admin and a bar comes acrross the top of my screen Please seee http://blokmovaz.com/screenshot.png for a screen shotWhat version of WP 2.9 are you running is it MU to enable user blogs?
-Im just using 2.9 when i look in the dashboard it just says “You are using WordPress 2.9”
I’m not sure if its MU how do i tell?Have you created a BP theme for use with the site, obviously BP needs a BP enabled theme in order to function correctly.
– I have not yet… I havent been able to get it working in its default theme correctly on my server. I wanted to do that first.TBH I think that you need to try and patch up your differences with the developer you were working with or failing that find another that can get into the core site and establish what exactly is what. That you state you were just meant to be the designer suggests that this is not something you should be trying to sort out, generally a frontend developer would run a job the designer supply them with necessary graphics for layout along with layout impressions. What does the client say about the developer not having finished things or are you running this job and subbing out the development WP side of things.
-The clients are friends of mine so while not having this site up is disappointing its not as bad as if it were a client of mine…Having said that, we have dumped a lot of money into this site….this is our second developer who just kind of stopped communicating with us right near the end of the job (after first 2 milestones and payments were meant). I feel like I am more experienced then your average newbie at wordpress however i feel like speed is key here… and with me trying to finish this up its going very slow. My hands are kind of tied when it comes to our past developer…. he just refuses to take my calls, return my emails, or texts. Not even sure why. Thanks

Participant@warut that change listed above seems to solve most of the issues (anyone trying to copy this text, please realize you’ll have to change the ticks to normal ticks from “fancy” ones).
There seems to be two remaining issues with regard to formatting the xprofile data:
There probably should be soft return after each Field… and the bold/color only effects one “row” of the text data in the field and not the entirety of the text field. You can see this in the image below… For instance where it says “full name” Dr. is on the same line and should be carried underneath the xprofile field. You can also see in the xprofile field “What Level(s) do you teach” only the the last row is bolded and high-lighted and not the WHOLE xprofile field. One last question, how can/where can I add a simple text line to the very bottom of the badge?
Here is the latest image:
http://mustech.net/holder/badge4.jpgAlso, please be sure to include a donation link on this plugin when they fix the link on buddypress as I would like to send you a donation for your time with this plugin.

Participant@r-a-y Not sure if you’ll know this r-a-y but does this plugin allow me to search by multiple fields? e.g. Can I search for ‘females’ with ‘blonde’ hair etc?
I am starting work on a site where models will have profiles set up on attributes such as hair colour, eye colour, height etc and really need clients to be able to search for members matching more than one field.
Cheers.August 21, 2010 at 8:09 pm #89929In reply to: Forum content in meta and topic title in title?

KeymasterYes, a ticket does need to be created for this!
*Edit – ticket created:
https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/2598—
To have the topic content as meta description for forum threads, add the following to your theme’s functions.php file:

ParticipantNow we are talking! Thank you both for information.
Yes, I’ve seen the /grouped and that is why I asked about it. It’s the way the forum topics need to be shown on my site.
Oooo … @deanjrobinson has done a SWEET job on http://help.deanjrobinson.com/
Now – if only someone would share what they’ve done! It looks like Dean planned on a theme – but plans can always get off to a slow start

@Modemlooper – well – I have the forum extra’s plugin and that gives an index. But the preference is to have the group shown with the latest topics below them (pagination necessary).

Keymaster@gwu123 – I already posted a solution for this a few posts before:
https://trac.buddypress.org/attachment/ticket/2578/2578.001.patchJust a FYI, it requires hacking the core.

p.s. if it just needs you to use the echo-ing version of the function: bp_the_topic_title() as suggested by @hnla, then please report back on this thread, so that we have the information.
I assumed you would have been trying to echo the result anyway. Please post all your relevant code in future

Participantok, I suspect that bp_get_the_topic_title() and the forum template tags can only be used inside the loop. Can anyone confirm this?
Instead, have a look at the functions in bp-forums.php and see if they will help you.
Alternatively, download the plugins that @modemlooper advised, and have a look at their code to see which functions they used

I have same problem and it means no links get added. If you have a solution, much appreciated.

ParticipantIs this plugin going to continue to be supported or has the author decided to deprecate it in favour of bp core development? (rumors)
Just installed it on a plain vanilla, WP 3.01, BP 1.252, no other plugins, default bp theme.
It won’t accept any links. Looks like everything works until hitting the Finish button. Complains about completing all fields. All is complete except that hitting the Fetch Details button does nothing. I can see a momentary flash of a Description field sometimes before it complains about completing all fields, but no description field is actually presented for input.
I have found other questions about no response on hitting Fetch Details, but I have seen no solution.
With WP Debug turned on, BP Links also renders a bunch of “deprecated” errors and and index warnings — which I don’t care about as they don’t *appear* to have any functional impact.
This is a marvelous plugin and it appears that many are able to get it functioning fine.
Since I have nothing unusual or complicated going on, any suggestions about what might be the problem.
August 21, 2010 at 5:46 pm #89909In reply to: Profile-Specific Ads in BuddyPres?
Roger Coathup
ParticipantYou should ask these as two separate threads:
For adverts – I suggest the following:
Build your child theme with ad zones (perhaps as widgets in sidebars). Use OpenX or Google Adserver to manage your ads, and integrate the codes appropriately.
You can put any logic you like into your child theme templates to make decisions on which advert to display. Of course, this isn’t trivial, otherwise Google wouldn’t put invest so much time and resource building Adsense! If you use Adsense (or equivalent) code snippets, they will automatically display adverts based on the content in the user’s profiles.

Yes, you can modify the words. See this article: https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/customizing-labels-messages-and-urls/August 21, 2010 at 5:27 pm #89908In reply to: Profile-Specific Ads in BuddyPres?

MemberOh, and I was also wondering if it is possible to substitute the word ‘Member’/’Members’ for anything else in the BuddyPress plugin, such as ‘Students’ or ‘Profiles’? In particular, I refer to the tab in most templates which gives access to the list of ‘Members’.
I would also like to know if there is any way of removing the sign-in box from the main pages of the site and creating a dedicated sign-in page?
Many thanks to anyone who can help with this.

ParticipantHere’s what you do:
Install s2member, and then in s2member settings go to General Options > URI Access Restrictions. If you add /groups/ as a URI fragment, all URLs with /groups/ will be restricted to logged in users. If you add /groups/create/ then anyone can see groups but only logged in users can create new ones, etc. You can do the same thing with /activity/ and /forums/.
I wrote up a really detailed article about integrating s2member and BuddyPress over here: http://www.buddyboss.com/how-to-set-up-recurring-billing-subscriptions-in-buddypress/

Roger Coathup
ParticipantIf you are converting an existing theme to BuddyPress, you should probably take a look at this plugin: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-template-pack/
It’s not something I’ve used, but there are a number of developers who go that route.
Have a look at the plugin / instructions. Also search on this forum for bp-template-pack, there are lots of threads.
