BuddyPress.org

hi – i have installed a buddypress multisite on wamp and want to make it live. This is my first buddypress site and before i make it live, i just want to make sure that there are no extra steps or anything different from a normal wordpress install move from wamp to live. Does anyone know of a good page, post, video that could give me the steps? I just don’t want to mess anything up or lose anything after all the work i’ve done!!! thanks in advance

Ok, I love WordPress and I love Buddypress and I think this open source software is awesome, but there are things I just don’t understand! I don’t understand why not only are there frequent “updates,” but it seems things break all over the place when you do update…..and of course things break if you don’t….so damned if you do, damned if you don’t scenario….I understand there are “hackers” hacking our sites….and I don’t get them either….but I do my banking online everyday and my bank doesn’t do constant updates for “security”…..I don’t think even the government does so many updates for “security”……so I just don’t understand

Then there’s the “stuff works….sometimes” problem. I tested registration earlier and all was perfect….within 2 hours, no more perfect……..no code changes, no .htaccess changes, no changes at all…..just comes and goes like the waves of the sea……

Then there’s the plugins….hit or miss, dependent on what version of of the plugin you’re using, WordPress version you’re using, Buddypress version you’re using, theme you’re using and of course, your theme’s version…..goodness gracious…..then, you finally get a great plugin that you love, only to have to deactivate/delete it upon a WordPress uprade, Buddypress upgrade, theme upgrade, or some other upgrade for something, somewhere…….

I have experienced plugins no longer supported, themes no longer supported, older theme versions no longer supported, older versions of wordpress no longer supported, older versions of buddypress no longer supported…….

lol…..I’m sorry, but I’ve been reading these forums for quite some time and there seems to be so many of us in the same boat…….I messed up when I decided to further my education….should have just become a programmer……..

Is it a funding issue? Maybe I can put a “donate” button on my site to try to raise some funds for WordPress, Buddypress, plugin development, theme development, ect………

I’m just frustrated and confused!!!!

All of a sudden, users can’t register. With Buddypress Registration options, users see a blank screen after submitting sign-up. Without it, the registration screen reloads but no registration is processed. It was working fine – I haven’t added any other plugins for a long time.

Using: WordPress MU 2.9.2
BP Version 1.2.3

I’m assuming that the “Multisite Blogging” feature listed on the BuddyPress.org homepage is related to having it work with a WordPress Network?

Or is there more functionality built into BuddyPress that allows this functionality? It’s not listed anywhere in the components section.

I’ve used the Group Extension API to store custom fields with my groups and these fields can be edited through admin through screens I’ve built. So that part’s done and working.

So say I have a custom field called zip code. I want to have a custom form where you could enter a zip code and return all groups that have that zip code. But I want it to function the same way the Group search does on the default BuddyPress theme so it’s basically just altering the Group loop to output the list of groups (and it’s nice and AJAXy)

I can build the form and front-end fine, but I’m not understanding where my backend code needs to go.

So here are my questions:

– Do I need to hook into groups_get_group to do this? I see in that function where I pass search terms, but I don’t know how to pass search terms if they’re custom database fields that I’ve created. So I’m assuming I need to write my own custom function to replace groups_get_group? I’m not sure where I need to start there.

– I noticed the group search uses AJAX and calls wp-load.php and then somehow returns just the piece of HTML to replace the list of groups. Do I need to call a different action URL in my javascript?

Basically, I think I need to write a hook into some function and I’m not quite sure where to start. I’m not afraid of writing code, and have written other small WP plugins, but I’ve never really done a hook like this before.

Any help you could give me would be great. Thank you!
