ParticipantYou can also likely to get into it through your hosts control panel (something like cpanel) and then go to a file manager where you can rename the buddypress folder. I forgot…rename is good too.

Participant@techguy is correct… You have to delete or MOVE/RENAME the wp-content/plugins folder.
In order to rectify this you WILL not be able to go in through WordPress since it’s “bricked”. You will have to go in through a FTP program like FILEZILLA. You may need to get your account information for using FTP from your service provider. Once WordPress doesn’t find the folder, it will automatically de-activated all the plugins and you will be able to get back in.
You can avoid this in the future by disabling all plugins before you disable the Buddypress plugin.

ParticipantGo in and delete the BuddyPress folder in /wp-content/plugins. You might want to back it up before you delete it if you need something in it.

ParticipantThanks for making the effort.
About login and arriving at profile. The fact that this is bp.org and that is the way it is set is a poor example. The site owners should take a little pride in trying to get the site to operate normally.Avatar, I have tried both avatars and reg. pics as in .jpg or .jpeg both don’t work. Is there a certain size ?x? or file name extension? pita? What is that?
As a person who really likes forums like phpBB3 or VB or SMF, honestly to call bbpress as offered thru buddypresss a forum is like calling a push cart a car. Posts may be displayed, but that is about it, there is no built in editor, none of the common features associated with forums either for the user or for the bp admin, and I know most agree. Yes plugins can extend the functionality, however is that really the route to go? Everytime there is a BP update who insures that the features and function a plugin provides will still work. Having a site built on 50 plugins has to be a nightmare when either a version patch or major update is released.
Ok the test bed is the answer, and backups. With other sites that I have (using other software not BP, I usually do a sql dump and backup all the files that are changed. I have been installing plugins through the admin plugin wizard, so I quess I need backup all the site files or download the plugin files and then backup the common files to the site.
sorry for whining, I know in a couple of weeks much will seem normal, but there is a lot of head scratching with BP.
Just noticed the image !

Participant• Why when I log into buddypress.org am I automatically taken to my profile instead of either staying on the page I’m already viewing or taken to the front page? How can I change this?
>> I don’t know of a way because this is up to the theme designer and bp.org theme is set this way. The default theme is not.
• I have tried multiple time to upload an Avatar here at bp.org and always get this error msg.
“There was an error handling that image, please try again.”>> Yes. This is a pita. I use images *not* square and this works.
• I have stated I’m a wp/bp noob, my previous sites were forum or cms sites using phpbb3 or SMF, or joomla, so I am super frustrated with bp forums no bbcode, no preview, no easy way to add categories or subcategories? Here at bp.org how do I quote someone, or post an image , or post a link?
>> Again, bbpress installation on bp.org is default. On your own installation you can add plugins to a “my-plugins” directory under wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-forums/bbpress
>> A better solution on your own installation is to install the buddypress plugins for the forums (such as Forum Attachments for BuddyPress).
Update:
I decided to try to post with an inline image and it worked.
http://www.thechembook.com/groups/announcements/forum/topic/test-of-inline-images/Example for this site:

• How do I know if plugins will work with the latest version of BP 1.2.4.1 if the plug-in show (Requires: 2.9.1 BP 1.2)?
>> Hopefully you have a test environment and are not trying to change things on a live site. Otherwise, have backups and try the plugin. If it fails then there is a process to go through to remove the plugin.
The best part of the buddypress.org site is the support given by other people using the product.

ParticipantNot sure if there’s a template tag for this yet, but I’d go with the activity stream widget (plugin) http://buddydev.com/buddypress/buddypress-sitewide-activity-widget-for-buddypress-1-2-and-above/ … it’s still a work in progress since you can’t post directly from it (only through your profile), but it works right out of the box.

ParticipantYeah, I know it is a little backwards, hah. I just like the idea of using wordpress as the UI for my community. Actually, I found something that is pretty close to what I need. It is still being developed, but it looks promising:

ParticipantI’ve liaised with the developer regarding 4sq plugin, He says it fine for the amendment but release it back to the wordpress.org!
Please can one guru amend it for BP?June 9, 2010 at 4:05 pm #81072In reply to: E-mail domains blacklist doesn't work

Participant@rondilly I was eager to test your solution, but it does the opposite of what you propose. It will make it so ONLY BANNED DOMAINS can register. Essentially, you are defining limited domains (“If you want to limit blog registrations to certain domains.”) with the banned email domain list.

ParticipantLots of previous threads for this. Even a recent one with a Trac ticket to make it so it doesn’t require lowercase:
https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/register-username-with-uppercase/
https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/allowing-users-to-type-in-uppercase-letters-for-the-username/
https://buddypress.org/community/groups/installing-buddypress/forum/topic/username-starts-from-uppercase-letter/I’m not sure if the lowercase does matter in other sections. You might add the question to the Trac ticket and see if the core developers can answer. This is something I’d like to fix too. The other solution I’ve considered is to have some javascript function that will check the username to make sure 1. it’s available and 2. that it’s lowercase and 3. Any other validation. At least a notification before they click submit would be sufficient.

This one in particular. It is also needed for all plugin developers as well!

jjj has issued his own patch. I’m not sure why mine was not accepted and why his has not been implemented. It is a complex issue but with simple fixes that I detailed and provided in the patch. With my fixes, everything works well.

June 9, 2010 at 1:10 pm #81054In reply to: Privacy component–where is it?
Jeff Sayre
ParticipantThe BuddyPress Privacy Component is practically finished. However, I’m still waiting on a few patches to be added to BuddyPress. Hopefully the 1.2.5 release will incorporate those. If not, I’ll need to refactor a few functions to work around various BP hook issues. I’m also waiting on the release of WP 3.0.
As you may know, plugin developers can only estimate when bug fixes, patches, and new core releases will happen. My guesstimates have been way off as of late. But, once these issues are addressed in core and WP 3.0 is released, the Privacy Component will be released.

ParticipantSorry if I was unclear…I don’t want to upgrade from bp 1.0.2. to the new version.
I am trying to backup the 1.0.2. database so I can import it into a new install with bp 1.2.4. on it on the same server. Basically I want to start with a clean slate with the same users, passwords, profiles etc.
