Let’s just say it’s not easy and that it takes time to make. There are polls and likes WP plugins. Getting them to work with BP i.e. show up in activity stream, etc. will require additional work on the plugins.

The select box doesn’t seem to have any effect, though. It seems to search members, groups and blogs (not forums) even though I select “members”, for example.

I’ve been trying to get a theme BP 1.5 ready for a while now and can’t seem to get it. The template pack worked great for 1.2.9 and I’ve tried the same instructions with some patchwork for 1.5 (such as grabbing the template files from the svn instead of the plugin folder). Things show fine (mostly) but replies, posts and other ajax tasks aren’t completing. Using firebug and posting a group update (what’s new) shows the response from wp-load.php to be totally blank.

You can log in with “student”, “student” on both sites to see what I mean. I’m assuming all issues (can’t post update, can’t post new topic, can’t delete, comment or reply, etc) with 1.5 are due to the same big fumble. Switching to the default theme doesn’t make it work either!
Working on all of it. There’s a topic somewhere here that lists what’s broken. One thing at a time.

WP 3.1 (Fantastico Install)
WordPress should be installed manually i.e. via FTP, cpanel, etc. and NOT via webhost scripts which bring about numerous issues when BuddyPress is activated. https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/before-installing/#system-server (webhost scripts wreaks havoc with creating a network as well)

Yes, I’m using it now and it’s all good. Except BP Columns theme cannot be used any more to generate the left sidebar. I really need this. Does anybody have a solution how to make a left sidebar?
@gregfielding – Hi! I’m running into similar problems. I defined a seperate loop (for announcements, more important than other updtaes) to be displayed on the top of the page. But when I add an update in the ‘normal’ loop, the same update is also added to the custom loop on top, even though it doesn’t match the filter set to that loop.
Did you manage to solve your problem? Is it a case of making sure all IDs and Classes are different, so AJAX call doesn’t reach the custom loop? Any help or pointers would be highly appreciated!
Have you tried changing back to the default buddypress theme? A number of those errors sound like they could be created by a theme that isn’t rendering properly? You could re-create a theme very similar to what you are currently using with a child theme of the default buddypress theme: https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/
Im thinking its a buddypress isssue now. Once I disable buddypress no problem occurs.
Managed to get it to work. Just creates a simple list, you can edit the css to create a drop down menu etc..

@gregfielding my bad, that code above was for BP 1.5 beta 3 and this only prevents the adminbar.css from being enqueued via wp_head. So you can definitely use your own adminbar.css by @import in style.css of child theme or enqueueing it, whichever you prefer.
Hi, I wasn’t expecting somebody to just write a couple of hundred lines of code for this to work. Just wanted to bat around a few ideas with some like minded people is all. Appreciate the link, very useful and it gives me something to work on. Just thought that more people would want this sort of implementation on their site.

The first option removed the buddybar. The second resulted in an error message:
