Anyone in here using WPMU + BuddyPress in Education? I’d like to network and be able to share specific concerns or plugins that we might find useful for this specific application of BP.
I am in Dearborn, Michigan. 18,000 students K-12. Targeting use by 7-12th graders. Some elementary students may use it, but I suspect it will be limited. Going to make this an add-on to our Moodle platform. So I will be including a login to BP+WPMU inside Moodle and not promoting it to the general student population. Only those inside Moodle will see the login details.
I wish there was some type of a Moodle + WPMU Networking option for student blogging. Then all logins to the site could be handled by Moodle.
i say…wait. BuddyPress will be released for WordPress (not MU) in a near future. I cannot say when, but the developers are working on this.
I run a small network called the Youth Bloggers Network, a WordPress and bbPress powered site which currently lacks some features that BuddyPress offers. I am wondering if using WordPress MU and BuddyPress is the best option for my network: http://youthbloggers.net/.
People who join the network usually have their own blog already, so the WordPress MU part is not necessary for me. However, the features BuddyPress provides including Friends, Private Messaging, and Groups appeal to me very much. I am wondering if it is worth switching over to BuddyPress right now. I understand that it is still under development and requires a lot of work to get things up and running – including a theme that matches the current look of my site.
Are there any BuddyPress users willing to share their thoughts on BuddyPress, and if they think it is right for me?
Hey vskylabv, wait before leavin Revolution!
I’m currently adapting a Streamline theme to buddypress so I can help you!
http://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/creating-a-custom-buddypress-component/registering-the-navigation/
Mods/Andy, I’ve updated this codex article if you want to copy/paste and save some time. Works fine on my test site. I updated with changes around $bp global.
function bp_component_setup_nav() {
global $bp;
/* Add the component to the main navigation item list */
bp_core_add_nav_item( __( 'Component', 'bp-component' ), $bp->component->slug );
bp_core_add_nav_default( $bp->component->slug, 'bp_component_screen_subnav1', 'subnav-1' );
$component_link = $bp->loggedin_user->domain . $bp->component->slug . '/';
/* Add the subnav items to the main component nav item */
bp_core_add_subnav_item( $bp->component->slug, 'subnav-1', __( 'Component Sub Nav 1', 'bp-component' ), $component_link, 'bp_component_screen_subnav1', 'subnav-1' );
bp_core_add_subnav_item( $bp->component->slug, 'subnav-2', __( 'Component Sub Nav 2', 'bp-component' ), $component_link, 'bp_component_screen_subnav2', 'subnav-2' );
if ( $bp->current_component == $bp->component->slug ) {
if ( bp_is_home() ) {
$bp->bp_options_title = __( 'My Component Title', 'bp-component' );
} else {
$bp->bp_options_avatar = bp_core_get_avatar( $bp->displayed_user->id, 1 );
$bp->bp_options_title = $bp->displayed_user->fullname;
}
}
}
add_action( 'wp', 'bp_component_setup_nav', 2 );
add_action( 'admin_menu', 'bp_component_setup_nav', 2 );
I am trying to figure out what files I need to modify in order to change the member listing page in buddypress. I am talking about the /members page the one that lists most recent members with the selectable alphabet on the top.
I kind of expected to find a template or plugin file called members, but don’t see one anywhere.
sorry for such a newb question
Hi all,
sorry for my bad english. I’m new on buddypress and i want to thank andy and the staff for the great job ! it’s fantastic !
One question.. i didn’t find any privacy settings to only let my friends to see my profile…
is there a plugin to make this ?
Thx for your answer and keep the good job !
You could use DarkPress: it’s cool, it’s for buddypress, and it’s free
http://www.buddydress.com/2009/03/darkpress-theme/
Worth it? Difficult to combine? I might switch from my Revolution theme to Thesis. Things are getting a little messy on Revolution. I’m pretty undecided.
Just started and definitely still a long way to go!!!
After three days of fiddling around I finally managed to fully integrate bbPress, so now I have to figure out how to add “Forum” to the menu and include all the header section into bbPress. The design will also be custon when I’m finished.
The site: http://domainelements.com/
As soon as 2.7.1 comes out, BuddyPress will be 2.7.1 only. So time to upgrade.
I’ll jump on the wagon here – has there been any progress since this series of posts?
This support forum looks great, and as all I’m using is a modified buddypress theme whatever this site uses would be perfect.
Anything around that could do the job?
The prospect of starting from scratch isn’t something I’m particularly keen on to be honest.
Hey, it´s working! Thanks a lot. I had to upload buddypress again. Funny because it´s the same version I previously uploaded… I´ll see what i can do now to have my site in spanish…
I actually reverted to english on the wpmu admin´s option dashboard and it´s still not working. Maybe you´re talking about Buddypress´s language?
Thanks a lot in advance,
C.
bobman024, I’m kinda lost here. What plugin are we talking about? bpGroups? Download the latest at: http://code.ourcommoninterest.org/2009/02/14/buddypress-group-forums-for-bbpress/
I just downloaded that ver and set it up again. Activates and operates.
sgrunt, ya I guess you wouldn’t need to mod the widget code, just the theme code. hmm. Well if Andy says it’ll go away by updating to latest trunk then it will. Warning! The theme directories have changed. See: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=1675
Hi, I just upgraded to wmpu 2.7 and installed Buddypress. Everything seemed fine and dandy but when i try to put widgets on the homepage, even with the buddypress theme, these won´t show up, thought they are active on the dashboard.
Additionally, when I click on “Blogs”, every blog entry in the blog directory features the following message:
“Unsupported operand types in /home/freak/public_html/wp-content/mu-plugins/bp-core.php on line 930”. Could this have something to do with my homepage not showing the widgets?
Thanks in advance,
Chris
You can see my website at: http://www.megustaescribir.com
I new this issue was familiar: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=976
Nobody seems to have figured out why this is happening. Please describe your configuration. subdirectory/subdomain, wpmu installed in a sub dir or the root, what ver of wpmu, …
We are never gonna figure this out otherwise.
You’ll have to modify the member theme functions that display the fields in the profile. That gets generated in: /buddypress-member/profile/profile-loop.php
by the function: bp_the_profile_field_value() in /mu-plugins/bp-xprofile/bp-xprofile-templatetags.php
There’s a filter in there that you can hook: echo apply_filters( ‘bp_the_profile_field_value’, $field->data->value, $field->type, $field->id );
So that you can detect these specific fields and change what gets generated by bp.
Let’s see, are you talking about all the links in the admin menu bar, the member theme or the home theme? It seems you want to know where *all* of them are.
(sigh) Ok.
The admin bar code is in: /mu-plugins/bp-core/bp-core-adminbar.php
The code for the member theme is in: /wp-content/member-themes/buddypress-member
The code for the home theme is in: /wp-content/themes/buddypress-home
You should ask johnjamesjacoby about this migrate issue. He’s done something like that recently. I think the answer is you need to export your data, using phpmyadmin or with the native export/import tool in wp.
http://www.techtraction.com/2007/07/30/move-or-backup-wordpress-data-with-the-built-in-importexport-feature/
Lots of stuff if you google ‘wordpress export’, ‘wordpress import’
Hi Guys,
Theme Contest is going to be extended an extra month! Official annoucement soon!
Thanks
Dan
Hi Andy- huge thanks for a really useful plugin that makes buddypress even more attractive and exciting than it is already!
I hate to be a noob, but when I try to activate the plugin, I get
Warning: require_once(/home/
/public_html/wp-content/wp-config.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/
/public_html/wp-content/plugins/bp-fbconnect/bp-fbconnect/wp-facebookconnect/common.php on line 11
Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/home/
/public_html/wp-content/wp-config.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/
/public_html/wp-content/plugins/bp-fbconnect/bp-fbconnect/wp-facebookconnect/common.php on line 11
I’m guessing this is because I’m running 1.0-RC1 1030 , but the files available in the download page are RC1 too? Where can I get the correct version of Buddypress to work with this plugin?
Cheers everyone, and thanks so much for all the hard work.
Since the integration of bbPress, Buddypress and WPMU completely failed(despite the same developer :p, to avoid confusing visitors I have to delete the forum button/link from the group sidebar. I have tried to find where the code was located but in vain. Could anyone of you please advise where the code is or how to hide or delete the link. Thanks a lot in advance.(I’ve tried deleting some code in css file but it’s still there, the image just changed to that of Wire(green cube)
