    If you are referring to the “built-in” search form on the Members directory page, it searches all xprofile fields that have entries in the bp_xprofile_data table, as well as, the “users table” (“user_login” or “user_nicename”) for the given search term. Additionally, the query is based on the “Like” operator with a “wildcard” (%) in front and after the search term, e.g., LIKE '%" . $searh_term . "%'".

    In essence, a word such as “usable” will return as a hit for a search term of “usa”. So, what you will, most likely, want is a more advanced search capability of which you can:

    • Code it yourself – see flexibility in members loop, caveat: this is old information but it provides insight as to how to go about it, sans a search form.
    • Give the BP Profile Search plugin a try to see if it fits your needs.

    Other than the above examples, there are available commercial plugins that you should be able to find on you own.

    I actually don’t really understand how Buddypress works. When I choose all the functions of my social network with Buddypress, do I STILL have to build these elements (like “Extended Profiles”, “Account Settings”, “Friend Connections”, etc.) by myself? Because when I visit the *****.com/members site on my homepage, I can’t find these elements?

    Thanks a lot!

    Hi,

    I love buddypress and wpjm combo. Its free and helps people get jobs, which is my private project.

    However I am not so tech savy and not any real coding.

    My question is if its possible, within reason, to add two choices on the member page, to filter out two user classes/types (wpjm candidates and employers).

    Today I have active members and “my friends” as tabs and also a search member field under that. I would like to add candidates and employers, to filter out those users. Mainly employers – since it woud be nice for candidates to reach out if it seems good match.

    I guess find the teamplate for members, add it to my child theme and ad buttons, and then connect the buttons with a filter option in the child theme function file?

    Best regards,

    Flamur

    I checked on the my buddypress’s /activity stream page and I noticed in the page source, there’s something defined:

    <script id="bp-nouveau-js-extra">
    var BP_Nouveau = {"ajaxurl":"https:\/\/mysite.com\/wp-admin\/admin-ajax.php","confirm":"Are you sure?","show_x_comments":"Show all %d comments","unsaved_changes":"Your profile has unsaved changes. If you leave the page, the changes will be lost.","object_nav_parent":"#buddypress","objects":{"0":"activity","1":"members","3":"blogs","4":"xprofile","5":"friends","7":"settings","8":"notifications"},"nonces":{"activity":"945da9770f","members":"3c2b470980","blogs":"0a006184ba","xprofile":"56da19c4b1","friends":"a437ee2b51","settings":"ce8e7d03fe","notifications":"ac5a574aa8"},"newest":"Load Newest","pulse":"15","activity":{"params":{"user_id":20,"object":"user","backcompat":{"before_post_form":false,"post_form_options":false},"post_nonce":"a7c93b3f4e","avatar_url":"\/\/www.gravatar.com\/avatar\/c4568b23422db4e779e93c73130989dd?s=50&r=g&d=mm","avatar_width":50,"avatar_height":50,"user_domain":"https:\/\/mysite.com\/members\/pen\/","avatar_alt":"Profile photo of Pen","objects":{"profile":{"text":"Post in: Profile","autocomplete_placeholder":"","priority":5}}},"strings":{"whatsnewPlaceholder":"What's new, Pen?","whatsnewLabel":"Post what's new","whatsnewpostinLabel":"Post in","postUpdateButton":"Post Update","cancelButton":"Cancel"}}};

    I can’t find what creates this script / variable.

    Well, yes, it exists in the sense that you can enter the url, and see the desired content. The questioon is how to make the page prominent. If I create a page, then I can put a link on it to go to the /members url. But I wanted to create a page (listed among the pages on my site) that would display that content. I actually tried using the Insert Page plugin, but I couldn’t get it to work for me. Guess I could dig into iframes a bit. It just seems strange that after all these years, BuddyPress doesn’t make it very easy for users to find the other members of a site to whom they could make friends or invite to join a group…

    Hi Ryan,

    You can use Shortcodes for BuddyPress plugin to display BuddyPress activities on any page. You can find it here: https://wbcomdesigns.com/downloads/shortcodes-for-buddypress/

    It also provides shortcodes for members and groups, allowing you to display member and group directories on any custom page.

    Please let me know if you have any further questions!

    Hello guys!

    I’m going crazy from trying to find the answer to this one, I hope you’re able to help! 🙂

    I noticed that the only person wo can see their activity, groups, friends and content under their profile page is the user itself (at least on the theme I’m using). I can’t even (as admin) go to others user profile and see their content. I’ve noticed on other themes that this content IS available for other users (which makes sense) – the theme I’m currently using gives the user the option to post “public, private or to friends” – so there is no need for it to be “hidden”.

    I would like my users to be able to “browse” other members profiles – hope that makes sense!

    I really appreciate anyone who can help me figure this one out! 🙂

    Thanks!

    This may seem an odd request but I’m sure others will have this issue if they choose to run membership mode.

    I badly need a way to add a ‘Account viewed but needs further verification’ type of note/flag to new signup accounts that I need to more carefully review (where I’ve checked profile data entered in signup fields but not approved or activated) and filter these out in Manage new Signups.

    Not being able to do this is making my request membership site impossible to manage, as I can’t easily find new signups amongst the one I’ve looked at but need further verification.

    I now have a massive list of unapproved signup pages to scroll through – and – keep re-looking at signups I already checked. But this is not a complaint – I love everything you do with BP 🙂

    Thanks

    Dear Team,

    I trust this message finds you well. I am encountering a compatibility issue between BuddyPress and my website, particularly on pages built using Divi (Ally theme). While other sections of the website function smoothly, the BuddyPress-integrated pages are experiencing disruptions, notably at the URL: https://kiero.tempurl.host/activity/.

    Here are the relevant details:

    WordPress Version: 6.4.2
    BuddyPress Version: 12.2.0
    Paid Memberships Pro – bbPress Add On Version: 1.7.4
    RegistrationMagic Version: 5.2.5.9
    WooCommerce Version: 8.5.2
    Divi – Ally Child ThemeVersion: 1.5

    I’ve tried troubleshooting independently, but the issue persists. It’s imperative to resolve this promptly to ensure seamless user interactions and community features.

    There seems to be a bug in the expected behaviour of the sorting of friendship lists and friendship request lists. When a user visits their friendship list or request list, even though the drop down sort menu shows that it is set to “alphabetical” the actual sorting is “last active.”

    To switch it to “Alphabetical” the user must first change it to “last active” before changing it back to “alphabetical.” But this is only a temporary fix–after a reload of the page, it goes back to sorting to “last active” regardless of what the drop down menu says it is doing.

    I don’t know if this has been an issue for a while, or if I’m just noticing it. I have BuddyPress 12.2.0 installed on WordPress 6.4.2, along with the BuddyPress Classic plugin activated. I am using BuddyPress Nouveau with the Astra theme.

    Today while trying to solve a different issue, I used the BuddyPress tools, “Repair total members count.” and “Repair member “last activity” data” which then reset everyone last activity status to “Not Recently Active.” I thought everything was fine, but then within an hour or two we started getting reports from our members about them not being able to see their friends list or find friendship requests.

    As I said, it is possible that this has been the case for a while, but since it was a newer install, everyone who was requesting or accepting friendship connections was by definition recently active. Now that their last active status has been reset, though, it has become quite apparent and is causing a great deal of confusion as people try to find their friends or can’t figure out why they aren’t seeing their friendship requests.

    Hello,

    I’m new to buddypress and trying to figure out to get it working. I installed Buddypress. I guess I configured it correctly as everything shows up in my menu as intended.

    But from there on out I seem to hit a rock as the buddypress pages do not show correctly. My menubar shows vertically and nothing is displayed correctly.

    I can’t even find a way to edit the Buddypress pages. I can’t find them between my pages and editing the on the pages itself is not possible is either.

    What am I missing?

    I use
    WP Version 6.4.2
    Divi Version: 4.23.4 with Child Theme: Molti Version: 1.2.1
    BuddyPress Version 12.0.0
    Paid Memberships Pro Version 2.12.7
    Paid Memberships Pro – BuddyPress & BuddyBoss Add On Version 1.4.1

    If you are not logged in, searches will lead you to the front page. When I am logged in, I get the desired overview.

    I have a problem translating members, activity and groups pages.
    I am using Polylang & Loco Translate but still there is no option to translate them.
    If i try to translate them with polylang, the content replaced with just a header.
    Loco translate shows that Buddypress is 100% translated to all the languages, but i cannot find a way to display them..

    I have a problem and I cant find the solution, please can somebody help.

    I’m building a school alumni website mainly for logged in members in a temporary construction folder.

    Why when clicking on ‘My groups’ in ‘Groups’, does the link not go to ‘https://elmfieldschoolalumni.uk/build/members/admin/groups/my-groups/’?

    When I can copy and paste the Link address into the address bar, it then brings up the Buddypress primary nav menu as the ‘My groups’ button should.

    I have tried various tests including deactivating all plugins apart from Buddypress and tried other themes but all to no avail. BP and WP are running the most recent versions.
    The site has temporary testing data installed.

    Feel free to login to help resolve the issue. The page in question is: ‘https://elmfieldschoolalumni.uk/build/groups/’. Username: guest and password: @#Silent#@

    Thank you

    Just my opinion and just an AI translation:

    Where are the sticking points?

    BP core:
    After 9 months with BP and several free BP plugins, there are still a lot of questions. Group handling and invitation are too complex and partly illogical. (Example: Group Owner is allowed to remove himself and then the administrator has to ‘intervene’). Furthermore, internal e-mail, where you have to select users based on their usernames (@…). Also not visually appealing and sometimes rather confusing in use. Other BP features (sorting/displaying members within groups!) that don’t work even on a WP default theme (Twenty Twenty-Two). Just annoying!

    In principle, the core plugin provides too little (in terms of functionality). Best example: Blogging and media. Something that defines WP at its core. In addition to two larger commercial “BP providers” and some ancient plugins in the WP repo, the selection and comparability is difficult if you want to use them for specific rights and groups. I understand that you want to offer an open and expandable system, but something “more” would be desirable or necessary.

    BP mailing list:
    Hardly any actions, but many (trivial) questions and no answers. On the other hand, technically interesting answers are often 10 years or more in the past (and unfortunately still up-to-date in principle), but where there is no attempt to test them in a current BP version.

    ToDo (Plugins into Core):
    Directory: Very important! Of course you can use “BP Custom Fields” but there’s no option to do a filter search, based on different fields to exclude displaying other profiles – or I just can’t find the options. Tried “BP Profile Search”

    Why not just embed a few components “more tightly” into the core, why not simply take over the source code of others who simply “copy” BP themselves without returning anything to the community? There was an interesting discussion about this recently on another platform site.

    Wishes:
    – Rights management for pages/posts or for individual BP components (either private/public or at user level) – e.g. “User Access Manager”
    – E-mail communication between each other without having to use the real e-mail address and being able to leave the borders of BP – e.g. “BP Reply By Email”

    It’s a pity, but currently STILL not enough for uncomplicated use and sometimes stopped in development. In addition, commercial providers who copy BP as well as other WP Social Media Group solutions that are more complete and appear more self-contained.

    To name a few plugins that could be partially included:

    Theme: BuddyX (free)
    BP 11 (dev) &
    BP Attachments (dev) (what does it do? Substitution of BuddyDrive?)
    – bbPress (smarter integration)
    – BP Profile Search (no filter options found)
    – BP Reply By Email (should be core as option)
    – BuddyDrive (should be Core)
    – Buddpress Docs
    – BuddyPress Xprofile Custom Field Types (should be core)
    – BuddyPress Xprofile Conditional Fields (should be core)
    – Rendez Vous (should be core as option)
    – “BuddyPress XY Blog” (should be core)
    – “BuddyPress XY Search”

    when filling out register form it just refreshes the page – seems to fail with no error message I can see.
    How would I find out what is happening in the browser and on the server to debug?

    tried with turning off plugins and back to default theme,
    also did the list of things to check from here:
    (
    – check the WordPress settings allows account to be created (Anyone can register checkbox needs to be active) See: wordpress.org/support/article/settings-general-screen/#membership
    – check your permalink settings are using one of the pretty permalink options (not plain), see this documentation page wordpress.org/support/article/using-permalinks/#mod_rewrite-pretty-permalinks
    – check the activate and register actions are associated with a public WordPress page. You can find some inputs about it from this documentation page : codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/configure-components/#settings-buddypress-pages

    NB: the registration and activation pages are only displayed to users who are not logged in,
    )

    site is https://www.chatyolo.com/register/ – it’s kind of NSFW

    1. Which version of WordPress are you running?
    5.8.3
    2. Did you install WordPress as a directory or subdomain install?
    main directory
    6. Which version of BP are you running?
    9.2
    8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated? If so, which ones?
    301 Redirects, All in One SEO, AdRotate, Error Log Monitor, Forminator Pro,
    Slide Anything – Responsive Content / HTML Slider and Carousel, Wise Chat Pro, Wordfence Security,
    WP Activity Log, Smush Pro, Query Monitor,
    9. Are you using a standard WordPress theme or customized theme?
    tried both -happens with 2021 theme, zakra, and astra

    13. If running bbPress, which version? Or did your BuddyPress install come with a copy of bbPress built-in?
    2.6.9 – it’s turned off through and still issue

    20. What BP Template Pack is activated in your installation? You will see that under Dashboard > Settings > BuddyPress – Options page.
    was on legacy, switched to neavox

    Tried with firefox and chrome and different computers..
    had a few other profile fields – then removed them from the base signup and it still fails –

    In case this is helpful for anyone, I was able to get an Avada child theme to enqueue BP Nouveau styles conditionally based on code detailed here placed in my child theme’s functions.php file and making sure BP Nouveau’s /css/ directory sits in the same directory.

    function register_nouveau_stylesheet() {
        wp_register_style( 'bp-nouveau-enqueue', get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . '/css/buddypress.min.css' );
    }
    add_action( 'init', 'register_nouveau_stylesheet' );

    function conditionally_enqueue_nouveau_stylesheet() {
        // only enqueue on members-directory page slug
        if ( is_page( 'members-directory' ) ) {
            wp_enqueue_style( 'bp-nouveau-enqueue' );
        }
    }
    add_action( 'wp_enqueue_scripts', 'conditionally_enqueue_nouveau_stylesheet' );

    Unfortunately, logged in users will end up loading the Nouveau stylesheet twice so I’ll have to update this code further so it checks for login status and possibly user role. Hopefully, I can find a way to conditionally enqueue BP’s styles for the directory only as well. I don’t need those styles loading site-wide!

    Hi there

    I have a weird, and deep issue with buddy press.

    what am I doing and what I encounter :

    • create a bp group – ok
    • at the “invite member” page,
      • some users are listed (very few)
      • if i search for a username listed and visible as above, i get no results found
    • if i go to wp dashboard > group> click to edit my group > add user –> i’m typing in something, the whell spin, and nothing is loaded

    this happens on a pretty features wp install, so i tried to troubleshoot with only buddypres active and twentynineteen (everything else is off)

    the issue remains

    I’m on wp 5.8

    I really don’t get what happens
    if one of you can help i would greztly appreciate

    Hi,

    If I do a members profile search and there should be no results i.e a blank page with no profiles. Rather than zero profiles being displayed, my members page shows all members. All other areas of the search are working fine.

    Is this normal for the profile search to do this or should it produce a zero member show on the page if it cant find any matches.

    Can anyone point me in the right direction why it does this and is there a php patch / fix for this 🙂

    Many thanks

    Hi Team.
    I want to set up “directory” pages on my site based on a particular member type. For instance, i have 5 members, two or suppliers and three are consumers. How can set up two pages on my site that lists each member type, suppliers and consumers.
    This should be set up in a way so that when a new member signs up and identifies them as a particular member type, they will show up automatically in the corresponding page.
    I was hoping to find a plugin for this but haven’t found any yet. Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Wordpress 5.7.2 BuddyPress 7.3.0 Theme: Gwangi

    My site has a search form. When input search fields are matched with a profile, the profile appears on the members results page as it should. Great. However, I want the ability for the person searching to click on the member profile and send them a message (notification) by email.

    When I currently follow the above, when I click on the profile of the member there is no-where on the profile page a facility to send them a message. Am I missing something obvious here?

    BuddyPress doc says: BuddyPress provides ways for you to send a message publicly to another member of the site or network. It also mentions: Private Message button in the member’s header – but I can’t see that.

    It must work that a non-registered person can send a registered person a message. Is this possible?

    Site is: https://myfamilyfinder.co.uk/family-search/

    To test: If you put Brian in the Current Name search field on the above page and click Submit you’ll get Brian’s Profile appear on the members page.

    I have a BuddyPress social networks in a multi network WordPress install (WordPress multisite), thanks to LH Buddypress Multi Network plugin.

    Everything is up to date.

    How can I prevent people from accessing to a profile page from another blog?

    For example :
    teacherSite, teacherUser
    studentSite, studentUser

    I have restricted access to site for non-member.
    teacherUser can only connect on teacherSite.
    And he can’t see in the directory other users from others blogs.

    If studentUser knows the teacherUser username or if he finds or tests…

    He can go to studentSite.domain.com/members/teacherUser/, and he can see the profile of teacherUser even though teacherUser is not linked to studentSite.

    Fortunately, there is no information (because everything else is well segregated) except the name and the gravatar.

    But he can still make a connection request or send him a private message!
    teacherUser will not see any notification on teacherSite. But he will potentially receive an email which will redirect him to studentSite without being able to connect to it.

    How to avoid this?

    If you know, you are a master!
