    You shouldn’t have two files named style.css however you could rename the old style.css to old.css and import it into the buddypress child of bp default theme.

    To create a child of bp-default theme, create a new directory in your themes subfolder ie: /wp-content/themes/shinshan/ and in it put a simple text file named style.css

    At the very top of style.css put something like the following:
    `/*
    Theme Name: shinshan
    Theme URI: http://example.org/themes/shinshan/
    Description: shinshan theme for BuddyPress.
    Version: 1.0
    Author: shinshan
    Author URI: http://example.org/
    Template: bp-default
    Tags: buddypress, two-column, grey, dark
    */`
    You could copy and paste the css (without the Theme head section) from your old theme immediately below that header or use the following line:

    @import url( old.css );

    (presuming the above file is renamed and in the current folder). Then preview or activate your new bp-default child theme.

    I suspect that importing the css might cause more problems than it solves – but it depends on what you have in it….

    To find out what needs to be changed, webpages can be examined with firebug (download) in firefox, or developer tools in internet exlorer 8/9 and Chrome (press f12 on windows)…

    – WP/BP versions? WP – 3.3.1 / BP – 1.5.3.1

    – Are you on Windows or Linux server? Linux Server

    – Have you changed to bp-default theme? Yes… I tested a few themes.

    – Have you deactivated plugins except BuddyPress to isolate issue/s? I have a total of 4 Plugins active… Better RSS Widget, Black Studio TinyMCE Widget, BuddyPress, Private BuddyPress… Originally I thought it was the Private BuddyPress plugin that was causing the issue. I deactivated it and the problem continued.

    Thanks for your insight.

    `There’s a line where feedback becomes toxic, and you’re both walking it.`

    Everything I posted was fact. I stated a problem, suggested a course of action, and explained the possible consequences if the problem was not corrected. Where was I being toxic?

    The original forums page effectively worked as a “preferred forums” list. It ordered forums by last posted message and number of users. Because the BP-Media forum is (was) extremely active and has a huge number of users, it was always at the top of the list.

    Recent changes to the BP site hid that page from the UI. Users can still, in theory, access plugin forums from the plugins list, but the list is ordered by last SVN commit date. That’s useless for someone trying to browse to a specific forum. They’d have to navigate 30 screens deep to find BP-Media.

    Although *you* may think the core buddypress forums are more important than plugin forums, users on buddypress.org do not agree with you. And they’ve voted with their posts. That’s why, until you hard-coded the “core” forums into your template and hid the “plugin” forums, *over half* of the core forums were displaced from the list by very popular plugins like BP-Media and CubePoints integration.

    Although these changes might improve *your* user experience by making it easy to navigate to the forums *you* visit most frequently, they harm the user experience for a large number of visitors to the site. You need to step outside your bubble and look at the bigger picture.

    Buddypress.org was “yours to experiment on” until you let 100,000 users move-in and build a community. Now you have a kingdom. And if you fail to keep it running smoothly, you’ll have a rebellion.

    I am intrigued to actually find a topic like this as the thoughts behind the question it asks are just as mundane yet as troubled as the ones that i’ve had since the moment i read about BP a few days ago. Not at all to insult the creators of this obviously much-adored piece of software. I’m almost ashamed to admit that i wholly agree with TireKicker’s pondering. Ashamed because it makes me feel old. ;) I pretty much grew up in forums and find their logical structure so natural they are almost like a safe haven to me.

    Anyways, i too feel very confused with whether i should go for BP, a forum or both for a new clan site of mine. As i’ve played around with BP for a few days now i can honestly say that there hardly is anything to dislike with it, even though its lack of structure still bothers the very core of me. It’s like handing a clay-worker a glass of water to work with. It’s so fluid that you don’t really know what it is or what you can do with it. It feels so alien that i still, even several days of working with it, can’t figure out whether it’s better than a forum or whether a clan would even want it or not. It would be very interesting to get a developer’s input on BP’s core ideology and actual, formal use of it. Examples of websites using it and for what. The “You can use it for whatever you’d like!” answer doesn’t really answer anything. Not that i’m complaining! I’m just so stumped that i can’t figure this software out. Mind you facebook scared me away pretty quickly too, so don’t take it personally! An information-flow like FB is a nightmare to people who enjoy order.

    And this is why i’m asking you for help in explaining its formal use, so i can figure out whether my members would actually enjoy it or hate it. It might just be the most brilliant plugin ever, which would bode well for me if i as a manager who enjoys progress as much as anyone got my members started with it. Does it have any use for a clan, you think? I mean, it has an activity-page with everything happening in it, on which you can reply to everything and make even more happen, plus groups with their own activity-page on which you can make even more happen. Then there’s your own user-page that displays everything i made happen, where anyone can make even more happen, that gets added to THEIR user-page and again back to the main activity-page.

    An endless cycle of information about everything from everyone, everywhere on the site. I don’t know if i’m a digital dinosaur at age 25 or if i’m simply having a bad week, but what exactly is so attractive about this flow of information? Who really wants to know everything that everyone does on a website? EVERYTHING? If i visit the site one day and feel like talking about, say, dinosaurs, how can i do that when i’ll be bombarded with a hundred other pieces of information regarding either the start, end or the middle-grounds of other subjects that i didn’t intend to read during that visit? And if i decide NOT to read all of that info every time i visit that site, how do i know what i missed? What if i missed something important because i didn’t realize its importance since it was just mumbled up among all the other information? How do you produce anything meaningful when there is no structure whatsoever to hint me or anyone else at what is important and what isn’t? How can one keep up with random comments regarding random subjects every time they visit the site? What if i forget what one subject was about? Will i have to go back and look for every comment made about that particular subject and read through half of it again just because i missed two or three comments?

    How can you actually keep a discussion about a specific subject in a software like BP? What’s BP’s version of topics? How do you keep things ordered? How do you make a sticky? Are you supposed to create a new group every time that you want to have a specific discussion? One group per subject, that every member has to join in order to take part in? A group discussing dinosaurs, the weather, cooking lessons, the next map pack for Battlefield 3? Won’t that consume a heck lot of server resources?

    Hmmm, you do come up with some ideas when you write what you think like this. How about adding color to messages in BP? Red for important, gray being just notices, blue being personal, green being something else. That could potentially solve the lack of knowledge of importance issue. That would at least bring some clarity to WHAT i’m actually reading and WHY.

    BP along with a forum seems, just like Neonocon pointed out, quite like an overkill. The thing is, neither he nor i seemingly understand whether or not it is since we don’t understand the actual point with BP. It’s a forum plus something alien. Is that a good combination or not? Have you developers thought about this too? If you have, would you say that BP would be the main attraction and the forum the backup, or the other way around? BP is obviously a very different way than a forum to handle information, but it is a BETTER way? Does it actually help anyone, for anything? I mean, it’s pretty easy to keep up-to-date with every new post in a forum, thanks to neat little “New!” features here and there for most BB software. Wouldn’t that then destroy the purpose of BP?

    This far into this blabbering i want to remind you that this isn’t a rant. I’m simply asking because i don’t understand. Not getting it is quite the itch! You’ve made BP do what it does damn well. The question just is; who needs what it does? Obviously, i don’t know whether i do or not yet.

    Did you make BP simply to attract users of WP to a facebook-clone because of its mere potential or did you have a spark of genius with an actual passion behind it to add something to WP that you deemed truly necessary, or solving a general problem with all community software, or something else that neither of us understand?

    I hope that nobody is feeling offended by my post. I have absolutely no intentions at all to insult or to judge. I’m simply trying to figure out a rubrics cube with black-and-white goggles on.

    All, can we start this again for my clarity. This is what I do to get started playing with Buddypress.

    1) Create under WP themes a folder e.g. bbexample

    2) Go to WP plugins find, buddypress folder, bp_themes folder and then select the bp_default folder

    3) Select and copy ALL the contents in the bp_default folder. The Codex talks about certain things but I copy everything, so I can play with the PHP files in some of the subfolders.

    4) Go back to bbexample theme folder under WP content (which is currently empty)

    5) Paste everything you copied in 3)

    6) Now you have a populated theme with lots of stuff in the folder. Yeah baby !

    7) First open the style.css in bbexample

    8) Replace ALL the contents with the following:

    /*
    Theme Name: bbexample
    Theme URI: http://blahblah
    Description: My theme for BuddyPress.
    Version: 1.0
    Author: PJ Bollocks
    Author URI: http://blahblah.org/
    Template: bp-default
    Tags: buddypress, two-column, grey, dark
    */

    /***
    * The following imported file is my personal copy of the bp_default style sheet and is located in my theme area
    */
    @import url( _inc/css/default.css );

    /**
    * Any other additional CSS style information can be placed below:
    **/

    8) Save the style.css

    9) Open the functions.php file to load up your theme styles and essentially kick out the bp_default theme.

    10) Replace the contents inside the php delimeters with the following as stated by previous BB players:

    if ( !function_exists( ‘bp_dtheme_enqueue_styles’ ) ) :
    function bp_dtheme_enqueue_styles() {
    // Bump this when changes are made to bust cache
    $version = ‘20111102’;
    // Register main stylesheet
    wp_register_style( ‘bbexample’, get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . ‘/style.css’, array(), $version );
    // Enqueue main stylesheet
    wp_enqueue_style( ‘bbexample’ );
    }
    add_action( ‘wp_print_styles’, ‘bp_dtheme_enqueue_styles’ );
    endif;

    11) Now you have a fully functional BuddyPress compatible theme (based on bb_default), but this is now yours to edit and play with as you see fit.

    12) Load the theme and check it out. It looks and performs identical to bp-default and it should since it is your copy.

    13) To Edit the CSS then you open the file under bbexample/_inc/default.css

    14) You can “Modify” the Theme layout, adding widgets etc, changing the page layouts and modifying some of the PHP display contents by finding the right file under bbexample folders.

    I’m having the same problem as @mwbarker

    It’s all the latest updates. I run my live site with w3TC, have disabled cacheing for logged in users, but still having this problem.

    My localhost test site has W3TC disabled, and it’s no problems. I guess I’ll have togo through all settings one by one until i find out what’s causing this.

    <– Edit.

    Ok, this is weird….
    I believe this has to do with “Page Cache” settings.

    I disabled Cache home page (now, I can loign/logout no probs)
    Selected “Don’t cache pages for logged in users”

    Now, as a test, I visited a few of my pages, log out, no probs. Stay logged out.

    Now, if I visit a page, say “About”, if I login on that page, I can logout, visit the homepage, I’m logged out, but if I visit that page again, it shows me as logged in. When I try to logout of “About”, it send me to the:

    http://mywebsite.com/wp-login.php?action=logout&redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fmywebsite.com&_wpnonce=bb1shsjskdd (nonce verify page)

    Very odd.

    In reply to: My new theme

    I cannot find how to start a new topic so hope I am not offending anyone posting here.

    My new site is 2012project12.com It is an art and photography project to inspire world peace and encourage environmental awareness. It is not fully functional yet. If you would like to join up for free just now you can. When it gets to the paypal part you just don’t pay but go back to the site and type in your user name and password and you will get a free membership.

    I have a question. We have an album page with which our members can upload 12 photographs (one for each month next year) but was also want people to be able to upload links to video’s they have made and also be able to upload text documents. Does anyone know how we can incorporte them into the album page or put in any other way of the members accounts?

    Any other suggestions and tips about the whole site would be greatly appreciated. 2012 Project 12 is a registered non-profit, based in Iceland.

    I don’t know if i’ve found the right theme: https://wordpress.org/extend/themes/platform – if so the lastest version appears to be 1.3.9.

    I’ve just downloaded it and can’t find any of the bp templates in 1.3.8 / 1.3.9 that one would expect in a bp compatible theme…..

    There were quite significant changes in the last major buddypress upgrade to 1.5+ so a theme often needs to be upgraded as well

    Mine’s like this too and my slug is set to “members”

    I’ve posted 5 articles about it but can’t find them. if anyone finds a solution to this please e-mail me at robpachasa@gmail.com

    I’m so fed up with buddypress. Can’t even set up this “award winning plugin” = fail.

    Hello.

    I have a Buddypress site using buddypress 1.5.1, bbpress 2.0.2, and WordPress 3.2.1.
    I am hosting our site on Godaddy. The main files of WordPress are sitting the site’s root directory as to avoid the “/WordPress” in our url.

    Anyway my issue is this: we are using the Default bp theme. I know you are supposed to create a child theme to make changes to the theme, so I am trying to find the code of file where I can add a “tab” at the top of the page under the heading along with “Home”, “Forum”, “Groups”, “Members”, that would be titled, “About”. I want there to just be an “About” tab next to the home tab. If I have to make a child theme, where would I make this change OR should I just make a stick post?

    Wow….super frustrated. I’ve completely deleted every file associated and followed all the suggested steps. The forums are still giving me problems….. don’t know why this url http://truejuggalofamily.com/boards is retained in memory. You can see it when you go to http://truejuggalofamily.com/members/activity

    The full page width worked again but the new forums do not follow the full width rule and they’re not syncing with the assigned forums. ie. if I name the forums “Forums” when I set up directory “Discussion Forum”… I create the new page, assign it as the directory, hit view and it’s not there. Can’t find the forums I create on the homepage navigation, I can only view the new forum created after I create it (view page) or with a direct link: http://truejuggalofamily.com/forums/forum/test-forum

    No matter how I create a main forum or category….. It’s like its not working. I also deleted every config file I could when I did the new install.

    So confused why this wont work….

    @jsibley I understand your concern.

    For those who are new: whether to install BP 1.5 or not – I recommend installing this version rather than older version. BP 1.5 is a major update with a lot of bug fixes and new features. There was a list compiled by volunteers around the time BP 1.5 was launched https://codex.buddypress.org/releases/1-5-plugin-compatibility/ The list needs to be updated but clicking on most the links of the specific plugins will bring you to the plugin pages where you can see if these have been updated to latest WP/BP versions.

    For those with older BP installs: whether or not to upgrade to BP 1.5.
    This is a similar question that many Site/Super Admins have asked themselves or regular/multisite WP installs. Should they upgrade to the latest version of WordPress or not because they are dependent on WP plugins which have not been upgraded? Sometimes the Admins wait for the plugin to be upgraded before upgrading to latest WP version if they are assured such plugin will be upgraded. More often, Admins upgrade to latest WP version and find alternative plugin and/or sometimes paying for a premium plugin and/or updating the plugin themselves. Those are the realities in open-source software.

    Hi @Mercime, thank you so much for your reply. The most relevant example from both examples that you put in your e-mail is: http://testbp.org/groups/the-mr-topp-group/forum/topic/my-hat-is-awesome/
    The posts are organized in a way that the oldest posts are on top and to see the newest posts you have to scroll down, sometimes for many pages if number of posts are big. What I am trying to find out is how to change the order of the posts to display new posts on top and old ones could go on the bottom. I’ve done a lot of research in the past 2 weeks and changed SQL values in WordPress to ASC but it does not seem to work. Seems like something in Buddy Press in overriding. Many thanks for your reply

    thank for the tip @etivite . I have searched and googled till my head was spinning, there is NO solution for it yet!

    The issue is asked again and again and again, and still no real solution. The only thing I have found which filters out the non-friend activity but also blocks your own! is this one:

    http://wpmu.org/create-a-better-community-experience-with-the-new-buddypress-friends-only-activity-stream-plugin/

    As for th bp_has_activities you can’t really use it as it only accepts ONE single parameter (for ex.
    if ( bp_has_activities( ‘scope=friends’) [which means own posts, groups, etc will be out!] and as you said is completely messing up the “load” function by the occasion. So you definitely can NOT call that a solution.

    You say it has been covered before, I’d rather say it has been asked again and again but when you search through all those posts you’ll see they all end either unanswered or after people desperately try to figure it out somehow, gets abandoned as no one found the way to solve it. ANd there was not even ONE single post from some of the developers who know best how buddypress is built.

    We can try and try and break our heads, but if after 2 years none of us managed 2 find a solution, isn’t it time for a specialist to look into it?

    We need just as on other social networks the possibility to have own posts (incl comments) combined with friends’ posts (also incl. commenst) on one single page/wall and only visible for friends.

    All social networks do that these days, only buddypress not …. :-(

    == i have incerted the code to get the buddypress to display properly with my theme weaver 2 ==
    Are you referring to this weaver theme http://wpweaver.info/themes/weaver/?
    And if by “inserting code” you meant you installed BP Template Pack plugin and went through the BP compatibility process, did you use the second method for making the theme BP-compatible? like this https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/theme-dev-bp-template-pack-walkthrough-twenty-ten-bp-1-5/#compatibility

    == the members show up fine but when i add pluging to buddy press to give more features to buddypress 1. Links 2 Albums the pages when these are clicked in the member bar puts the sidebar below the content cant seem to find where to fix this ==
    If you use the second method (header-buddypress.php and sidebar-buddypress,etc) for BP compatibility process per link I posted above, then you won’t have to make further change to templates provided by Links/Albums plugins

    I am also having this problem. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance:

    @pcwriter

    Thank you for the suggestion. Indeed I think it is the best solution. However I’m not really at ease when I need to play in Php. Can you give me an example of what would look like such an implementation?

    Here is the code I found in Page.php (which I think is the file that need to be modified) :

    Pages: ‘, ‘after’ => ‘

    ‘, ‘next_or_number’ => ‘number’)); ?>

    Can you point me out where and how to integrate s2Member snippet?

    @modemlooper

    I use a plugin for the like button to show up automatically. I’ve read a couple of things on Facebook developers but for now it seems to me that it’d be a lot of trouble to modify the plugin to act like I want. I will have to do it sooner or later as I think it’s important to have the Facebook thing well set up, but since I plan to open my website on November 1st I need to find solutions that are within my skills.

    Thank you both for your time and help!

    I still struggle to get this view running corectly.

    I managed to find out how to pull all group ID’s for a given userid:

    SELECT group_id FROM `xyz_bp_groups_members` where `user_id` = 1

    And how to get all forum_id’s for a given group:

    SELECT meta_value FROM `xyz_bp_groups_groupmeta` where group_id = 1 and meta_key = ‘forum_id’

    My idea was to do a join as i didn’t know how to follow your directions correctly @boonebgorges.
    Therefore i tried to modify the original $sql (line 83 in bp-group-filters.php):

    $sql .= ‘JOIN ‘ . $bp->groups->table_name . ‘ AS g LEFT JOIN ‘ . $bp->groups->table_name_groupmeta . ‘ AS gm ON g.id = gm.group_id ‘;

    with this extended version:

    $sql .= ‘JOIN ‘ . $bp->groups->table_name . ‘ AS g LEFT JOIN ‘ . $bp->groups->table_name_groupmeta . ‘ AS gm, oba_bp_groups_members AS gu ON g.id = gm.group_id AND gu.group_id = gm.group_id’;

    unfortunately i have not enough know-how how the buddypress-core is working correctly. Any hints on how to do this properly?

    Many Thanks!

    Hi Modemlooper,

    First of all thank you for your fast answer. I read about pros and cons about both Share and Like button and even if I find the Share button useful I’ll most likely have to get rid of it.

    I just tried to “Like” one of my post and see what was going on and Facebook and the same behavior happens. “XYZ liked a link” whereas the link is the link to the Membership Options Page (aswell as the thumbnail and excerpt).

    How can I keep my posts restricted to members-only and have the Like or Share buttons (or both) act as they should?

    Regards,

    @djpaul, thanks for your help. I had came across that plugin but didn’t find it quite helpful as the instructions given in the tutorial are not enough clear. I am also facing another issue. When I click on Activity from a child site, it redirects me back to home page.

    I mean http://example.com/child-site-1/activity redirects me to http://example.com/child-site-1/
    When I am on root site i.e. http://exmple.com/ then /activity works perfectly fine.

    Any idea why this may happen and how can I resolve it? Also facing the redirection problem when I click on logged in user name. It takes me to home page from there too. Instead it should take me to the profile page. Thanks in advance.

    @boonebgorges sorry, but when to find the errors exactly when seeting WP-DEBUG to true? I can’t find any place for them in admin page or website front.

    I don’t know if anyone is still looking at this, but I think it is a topic that is worth pursuing. What seems to be getting lost though is what it takes to do the job.

    A facility like Justin Tadlock’s members plugin is a big help. It provides a mechanism to define and edit roles and apply them to users. That covers a lot of territory. However, unless the content management part of the software looks for and enforces those roles, it is meaningless. Justin provides a facility to do that if what you are talking about posts/pages and potentially custom post types. That is fine for WP content or even things like BuddyPress Docs where Boone implemented it as a custom content type (although I haven’t look at the details of his implementation relative to permissions). However, BP adds additional content types. And it is not just FORUMS. Groups are a content type. Private messaging is a content type. etc.

    That is where the current_user_can() checks make sense. Users should have permission to perform actions. That doesn’t necessarily mean new roles, but it does mean distinct capabilities. Those capabilities can then be assigned to any role that makes sense. But the capability list needs to be published like it is for WP https://codex.wordpress.org/Roles_and_Capabilities

    The mechanism for assigning capabilities to roles and roles to users and doing the actual check is all WP. It’s already there. Justin provides UI to access it. What I am seeing missing in BP is published string literals that have meaning in terms of capability sets and I assume the current_user_can() checks that actually make it happen. (I looked for it on Google and this is where I was directed!)

    @DJPaul you talked here in terms of BP1.3, which is now 1.5 I believe. Did any of this actually make it into the code? If not, it sure would make sense to me to find it’s way on to a revised RoadMap.

    My 2 cents!
