In reply to: Forum – not working

MemberThis is the part you need to take note of –
Note: During the Installation Wizard, Forums will be associated with the “Forums” page. In some installations, you do not need to change anything. But if your sitewide forums won’t work, go to wp-admin BuddyPress > Pages and you’ll find the association and remove the Forums Page as the selected page.
However, i have managed to get this far. and while a forum does install. it appears it removes the FORUM tab on the website and so is only findable by publishing and clicking on links. Can somebody shed some brighter light on the issue? thanks in advanceFebruary 3, 2012 at 12:50 pm #129164In reply to: [Solved] Forum navigation: jump to most recent post

Participant@FuriousCigars Sometimes the simplest things get overlooked.

As an alternative option: If you really want the pages to be as a child, creating a new page with the slug /community/ and putting them as a child of that page should work (it works here at bp.org).Don’t sweat it. It’s understandable. i get frustrated alot too. Just remember that their are people here willing to help (sometimes, you just need to bump your topic afew times, because sometimes we miss topics when we sleep, and when it was posted early on in the night and hasn’t been bumped recently, we assume the issue’s been resolved.)

ParticipantI honestly couldn’t from the top of my head, nor can i afford you the luxury of time at this minute. Sorry man, someone else will help you.
Simple:Press I used to love that platform, it’s such a mature forum and does so much stuff. The admin can be very heavy though and is completely not connected with BuddyPress.
If you are going to use BuddyPress you should consider the BBPress forums now, it’s at a very good stage.

Member@Chris Thats exactly what it was man. I had the those pages under Activity as their parent. As soon as I changed that everything works perfectly. It amazes me that my brain couldn’t have thought of that. I am very sorry I took my frustration out on you bro. I feel like a real jerk today.
Thank you very much for the help, that fixed it all.

moxie2020
MemberYes, Agreed. I have found posts about this going back 11 months and no one seems to see this as a serious detractor for Buddypress. A group centered plugin that is not actually focused on its members.
Anyone can see ALL public group activity whether they belong to the group or not. Simultaneously that same person cannot see any Private or Hidden Group activity even if they belong to the groups.Activity should be for groups the person is a member of. Otherwise buddypress is just confusing.
Please let me know if there is a patch since this is really a bug.

KeymasterMy working setup for a site-wide forum is:
Disable the BuddyPress Forum component altogether (BuddyPress>Components)
Install the bbPress plugin for WordPress.
Don’t create a “Forum” page within WordPress. If one exists, I got odd behavior, even if it was in Draft status. (Definitely don’t make a Forums page and add the bbPress shortcode.)
Enable bbPress plugin.
Create a new forum via the admin menu Forums > New Forum.
Go to the dashboard menu Settings > Permalinks and Save. (This flushes your permalinks.)Now, when you go to your bbPress default slug, it should take over and build the page. If you have other forum-related weirdness, like “Please pick the group forum where you would like to post this topic” or “Can’t create topic”, check for the existence of bbconfig.php at the root of your web space. If it exists, open it and make sure that it has the correct database info entered in it. (The host, user and password should probably match what is entered in wp-config.php.)

MemberOhh Ohh Ohh I figured it out. I had read NUMEROUS posts across this site and the bbpress forum and all of them basically said “well they don’t work well together so you need to hack it together”.. but even those hacks didnt work.
Guess what, a simple shortcode and BAM! It works.
All I had to do was add [bbp-forum-index] in the proper page and there you have it. YAY FOR ME>

Participant@FuriousCigars – Try moving the Members and groups pages into its own root page rather than as a child of activities… the activity directory hogs the url structure…

KeymasterHmm. So, your latter is a bbPress 2.x link, which BuddyPress calls site-wide forums. Group forums uses bbPress 1.x, which is a totally different beast to try to figure out. Since you’ve got bbPress 2.x installed, I’d suggest trying to get that figured out first. I suggest you visit the forums at bbpress.org and see if there are any discussions or guides about this sort of problem.

KeymasterPutting forums aside, do only member pages not work? Does everything else work? e.g. WordPress post permalinks, WordPress pages, BuddyPress groups.

MemberI’ve done:
permalink resave
uninstall and reinstall
deactivated plugins
used buddypress theme
optimized db
dropped unneeded tables
verified rewrite module – verified Options FollowSymLinks and AllowOveride AllI can’t remember the other things from a few other forum topics, I’m brain damaged by this lol.
Sorry we got off on the wrong foot, I really do appreciate the help. I would gladly give you admin login if taking a inside look would help.

Participant@FuriousCigars – Sorry, i end up making fun of comments when i get offended (i have anger-management issues and it’s my way of keeping it under control).Making a (well, what i thought sounded like a) smart alec comment about nobody caring because they didn’t immediately repy to previous postings of yours is offensive. We are ALL (except for one or two of the core developers who are hired by Automattic to ensure the project runs smoothly) volunteers here, I spend countless hours each day (and i know alot of others do too) voluntarily attempting to help people when i can. and when someone says i don’t care, it’s offensive. I’m sorry, like i said it’s my way of keeping my anger-management issues under control.
Anyways. Back to the topic: 404 errors. So that i’m not repeating what you have already tried… do you mind listing everything you have tried? it’s really difficult NOT repeating things when you dont know what has already been said…. or what the problem is.

Member@Chris If I could figure this out, I wouldn’t be here. I don’t have the skills to work this out on my own.
I did not make a “silly” comment, and you saying “not my problem” is hardly helpful, and only proves that my comment was not silly, but true. I don’t mean to give you attitude, you haven’t done anything to me. It just gets really frustrating when everyone asks you the same questions over and over again. I realize that you don’t know that I have been asked to deactivate plugins countless times, and for that I’m sorry.
I would just say if your going to take your time to try to help someone, having a laugh about their comments is the wrong way to start off.
Thanks for trying, and have a good night yourself.

Participant@FuriousCigars – My apologies, i didn’t realize that me taking 10 minutes out of my time to try and help meant i couldn’t make a laugh out of a silly comment you made…
I am a buddypress user just like you. I post here and try and help others who are having trouble because i’d expect them to do the same for me. I didn’t need to attempt to help you and thus i dont appreciate you claiming that i post garbage. Thank You. It’s people with attitudes like yours that cause others not to help around here.
Have a good night. Hope you figure it out.

Member@chris I have already deactivated plugins, used default theme, and gone through countless posts on here trying fixes, including the permalink saving.
Also referring to your comment on my quote, …thats your problem……that’s precisely the garbage I’ve been seeing here that makes want to get rid of buddypress….I mean did you really need to quote my frustration. Thanks for the very helpful attitude.
@guap yes I have tried those things…thanks for trying to helpFebruary 2, 2012 at 12:39 am #129043Round World Travels
ParticipantI’m not sure if this will help but today I started getting all 404 errors except on my home page. The blog posts, member pages, forum pages, etc all 404 errors. First I deactivated all my plugins and then checked that, still 404 errors so I reactivated them.
Then I changed the permalink structure I had set back to default. This fixed it. I then switched the permalink structure back again to my preference and what all my exiting links are (previous setting) and it is now working fine.
I don’t know why this happen but maybe doing that will help you as well. Good luck
