ParticipantFor sure, “search anything…” is a misnomer and needs to be changed until BP really can search anything. As far as I can tell, some of the ‘sliver searches’ are so limited that they only check superficial elements ( for example, forum search only searches forum post *titles* and not the actual content? What am I doing wrong?

ParticipantI had this happen when I upgraded from 1.0.1 and was trying to get the groups to behave. I noticed that any new group I made seemed fine, so I deleted all the groups that were left over from pre-upgrade. Things seem to be fine now, but you lose all group activity if you start over. FWIW.

ParticipantThanks for giving it a look guys…it is so helpful to get another set of eyes on there as I was looking at completely different things. Here goes:
will the tags show up on the main page tags widget?
On the blog pages they show in relation to the blogs’ tags. For the main page you would need a sitewide tags widget. Look here: http://wpmututorials.com/plugins/sitewide-tags-0-4/
The magazine theme layout looks cool, but I feel it’s bit overwhelming for certain users. especially on lower resolutions I feels a bit crammed
I agree, it needs some testing and wiggling. I noticed the colums are not behaving how I want them to as well. I like your comp, it is in between a Microblog and Magazine layout. I might just include that unless there are other suggestions.
To avoid confusion I would probably rename Status Update in the groupblog to something like News Update or Blog Update, so that it does not get mixed up with a status/activity update in BuddyPress.
Yes, it seems posting updates is not needed and we should encourage users to post media from this point. I think Ideally the update form from buddypress would exist in a top screen dropdown (not sure how you call those web 2.0 things). So you could post updates at any time and doesn’t take away real estate.
Maybe allow the user to switch to a full markup mode or tiny editor to have more control over longer posts.
This functionality would have to be born at the P2 theme. We just use there functionality. Whatever they develop, we inherit. I already hacked the main P2 a tiny bit to include the allowed categories and ajax feedback. Since it is a theme created by Automattic I think it is a safe horse to bet on.
preview blog post before posting it
Yes, I was surprissed to by this when using P2 the first time. I didn’t expect img code in the post form, but it makes sense. A preview screen would be very nice. Again, this is something that would needed to be developed by the P2 theme. Unless anybody can supply some code we code integrate.
ability to edit the post after it’s posted.
There are actually a bunch of P2 features I omissed. Like keyboard shortcuts and inline editing. I’m going through the P2 theme and comb through what is still missing, inline editing is one of them. Thanks for mentioning that.
preview and edit functions are musts
As mentioned previous
Basicly inline editing is a core feature so no problem. The preview of posts I’m not sure. I wonder if there’s a feature request section for the P2 developer crew.clicking any category tag displays the archive for that tag on a page that has no group header.
You are absolutely right. I’m only including the group header in single, but this is something I can add in with a few lines. Just didn’t get to it yet, but was already to excited to share what the development was.
if you have â€Disable activity stream commenting on blog and forum posts?†set to â€Yes†in the BP admin area, I’m guessing this wouldn’t work
Ha, yes you are right. I want prioritize buddypress activity comments since they are more sitewide than individual blog comments. This helps prevent forking of discussions and the discussion can take place at multiple stages. We could do an easy conditional to check if activity comments are disabled and then include the regular comment form instead.
I guess for backward compatibility for old blog comments we should show those on the blog posts as well.
Agree with Bowe about blog status updates.
yes…
I must be daft, but I couldn’t find the alternate layout options screen
Currently this is controlled by the site-admin. So one layout rules them all. We quickly realized that it would be much better for the site-admin to allow group creators to choose a layout. This way you can have diverse groupblog expressions. We just did not get around coding that yet.
There is still a bunch of stuff we need to add and fix. Pitfalls also include group admins to change the theme of their blog (I just of that) as well as we need to see if we can omit the featured category from the backend for group members who are not admin or mod. An many other stuff.
So it is a bold task to include P2 support and does add some dependency, but at the end I do think it adds to the overall value. We just need to smooth out what and who the plugin is used. Your feedback help us with that.
Come WP3.0 I hope P2 changes to post-types rather than categories, but we will see.

KeymasterVery nice, Marius!
I love how you’re using activity comments to power the blog post replies:
http://sandbox.ywamcloud.com/the-apple-experience/2010/03/21/enter-a-title-for-your-post/
However, if you have â€Disable activity stream commenting on blog and forum posts?†set to â€Yes†in the BP admin area, I’m guessing this wouldn’t work. If possible, would love to see Groupblog override this option when a group blog is enabled.

Agree with Bowe about blog status updates. I would like to see an option to disable status updates for blogs. It’s a little redundant b/c of the group activity stream.

I must be daft, but I couldn’t find the alternate layout options screen.
I know there’s a lot planned for this plugin, but I’m loving it so far!

ParticipantWordPress = CMS / blog
BuddyPress = Community
bbpress = Forum
So yes, WordPress/BuddyPress is not yet a true forum like phpbb, which was just designed for the purpose.

ParticipantHooray just got it to work! I just do not like the way topics are posted! At the moment all content from all the groups I have made go into one forum!! It would make so much more sense to have individual categoried forums!
Just wondering what is the point of having groups? It would be great if post topics could be kept in group forums, all content relative to the group kept in that forum!
It is difficult for people replying to post, when all content gets thrown together!!!! PHBBB really does look so much better!
But there again I am supposing I am expecting to much! WordPress/ Buddypress is a blogging software, not a forum one!

Participant@tomstage you are just going into a wrong direction…
1. You need to learn requirements to run WordPress.
2. Linux is just another OS, just like Windows or Mac.
3. Ask your web.config questions to your server provider, buddypress forum is not a place for questions regarding windows servers.
And most importantly, read and follow the instructions here.

ParticipantThis is getting bbpress topic. Please remember this forum is for BuddyPress.

@beeza you know you can always change the looks by themes. Google and/or visit bbpress if you want to learn more about bbpress vs phpbb.

KeymasterI was finally able to reproduce some of the redirect conflict issues raised here and elsewhere.
The problem (or at least the problem chembro303 describes) arises when Forum Attachments (0.2.1) and Forum Extras (0.1.5) are installed and you click on the Groups tab in bp-default. If you comment out line 26 in bp-forum-extras.php
do_action( 'bbpress_init');then the conflict no longer happens. Unfortunately, that doesn’t help much – tons of things are hooked to bbpress_init, so it’s kind of tough to narrow them down. I’ll keep thinking about this, but Rich, hopefully this little bit of info will spark an idea on your part!

ParticipantThe problem I have with the forums in buddypress is, it does not have a forum layout. At the moment when I post topics it is does not flow very well! It would be easier if it was in the standard format, something like: Board name/ Categories/ Forums / Topics. This way all the topics could be kept much more neat.
with buddypress – everything is wrapped into groups – so you won’t see the traditional layout unless you rework the templates as such. (or install an external bbpress which links up with the groups)

ParticipantIf you have searched the forum, developers (from the navigation on top), and google you have two options:
1. Install bbpress from the one click installer by BuddyPress
2. Install bbpress alone and connect to BuddyPress
You’ll have total freedom customizing the forum if you choose option 2, but thanks to the community, there’s a plugin for option 1 too.

Get a testing environment, try the both and explorer the bp world!!

ParticipantYes! I totally agree!
I am struggling with the same problem!
I have opted for Groups forums.. but every so often I wish there was proper Index, just like normal forums (bbpress for example) because users are used to that!
My only solution – something what I am planning to do untill proper solution is out,
I will create manually a table / index with the most important forums, or featured forums
And I guess will try to place is above ‘all/my topics..’ OR just create a new page
If anyone comes up with a proper solution (code) or plugin,. please post here
kind regards
Kris

As a beta testing guinea pig, I find the BP version a bit slow … it renders the post box first, which then disappears before the groups/forums/whatever they are appear.
But, really, I meant far more along the lines of what is commonly expect of a BB/internet discussion forum, like quote and preview buttons, text editors.
I get the feeling that BBpress was already the poor neglected cousin of the Automattic stable before it was adopted by the BP “department”.
I am finding it is not really attractive to ordinary users. They do not adopt to it the way they do to phpBB etc.
OK, the geekier, techie end of us might appreciate the slim characteristics of the front end but Joe Internet needs all his buttons.
(I am not anti-BP/BB by any means … quite the opposite. I am just wishing that Automattic invested more of their recently received multi-millions into developing it further and quicker).

ParticipantHey Jeff,
I am using the latest versions of both BP and WP.
I am a member of all groups on the site currently as it is just in development. I have 107 groups created, am logged in as admin, the user which created every group but only 100 of them are showing in the drop down.
This happens when you click on the ‘Forums page’ and are looking at the forums directory.
There is a post new topic button which then displays teh topic header, details and a drop down to select which group to post the topic in.
Maybe the code is set to just display 100 groups?
Thanks for your time!
