ParticipantForums are group based. So, if you have not created a group, do so, then the forum tab should appear. Also, you must make sure that the “Enable discussion forums” check box is enabled in each group for forum to appear. This is done by a group admin by clicking “Admin > Group Settings”.

Keymasterkriskl – I assume you’re talking about the ajax quote plugin that’s part of https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-group-forum-extras/other_notes/. I just tried it and they seem to be working fine together on my installation. Can you be more specific about what is “breaking”?
avi-m – I installed the widgetized theme and I didn’t have any redirect problems. I wonder if the problem is arising from a combination of theme + my plugin + some other plugin. I don’t suppose you could turn off all other BP dependent plugins for a second to test that theory? Or perhaps give me a list of the plugins you’re running so I can try it myself?

ParticipantWhich version of WordPress and BuddyPress are you running?
To post a new topic to a thread using the Group Forums Directory, you must be a member of that group and the group must be public. So, you will not have the option of selecting groups that are private or those of which you are not a member.

ParticipantBuddyPress.org uses bbPress, the same forum software that comes with the BuddyPress download. However, the forums on BP.org are site-wide forums (using an external install method) and are skinned to look like the rest of the site. They are not group-based forums as you get with a standard install of BuddyPress.
To learn more about external bbPress installs, read this:

ParticipantThis is due to the bbpress database installed as latin1_general_ci
There’s a trac entry, but not sure when it’s going to be fixed properly.

Participantthis works great – how do you also exclude forum replies?
(… searching code …)
UPDATE: Well, I tried this code but it doesn’t work. Posting it here in case I’m on to something that somebody else can fix:
function bp_remove_forum_topic_post() { remove_action( ‘groups_new_forum_topic_post’, ‘groups_update_last_activity’, 10, 2 ); } add_action( ‘bp_init’, ‘bp_remove_forum_topic_post’ );

ParticipantI think this “bp_core_get_username” is used only for one member. This doesn’t work on members-loop.php where it should list member names and avatars on the Members Directory.
The function should be something equivalent to
<?php bp_member_name() ?>But instead of member nickname it should return login ids of members.
I just found the following custom function, but I wonder why this function is not built in by default.

ParticipantAlso,
We’re a little bummed that we didn’t get to launch with 1.2, but during full-blown development (we contracted a small firm to have this version developed) 1.1.3 was the only stable version. There’s a lot of custom work above-and-beyond WPMU & BuddyPress design-wise, so I’m pretty sure 1.2 would break the theme. I’ll have to install a clone soon to see exactly what will happen when we apply the upgrade to 1.2.
We’ll be looking for a developer to join our team soon, but its slim pickings right now (how many people want to join yet another web startup with a barebones budget?). Hopefully we’ll get lucky and find someone passionate about our product!
Down the line there are a ton of things we want to add, especially in the forums department (BP forums are severely lacking in comparison to offerings like IPB, etc). Even rich text options are missing right now, let alone the ability to insert images and embed video — there may be plugins out there but I’m not aware of any right now that work for 1.1.3.

Participant@Sadr – What is confusing you is the difference between a “release” build and a “development” build.
We are using what are called “agile software development” methods [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agile_software_development ] to decide on features, build, test, and revise our plugin software all at the same time.
By using a concurrent versions system [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subversion_(software) ] every developer on the team has their own version of the plugin with the features that they are adding.
So when I say that something is “done”, I mean that it has been written and tested but has not necessarily been released yet.
Every few days, the developers merge [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merge_(revision_control) ] our code branches together, and create a “beta” release. We then post it on this forum to allow all of our stakeholders (you guys!) to test it.
After we are very, very sure that there are no bugs in the software, finally we post it as an “official” release on the WordPress plugin repository.
We must be VERY careful about the quality of official releases, because they are automatically broadcast to every current user of our plugin, and even the tiniest defect could crash *thousands and thousands* of people’s websites.
So, the version being offered on the WP plugin website is always many steps out of date.
We’re planning to do our next code merge on Saturday or Sunday and get the 0.1.7 beta out for testing on Monday night.
Considering that we’ve gone from *nothing* to this:
http://foxly.ca/admin-screen-01.jpg
http://foxly.ca/flickr-mode-01.jpg
in ten days, I think we’re doing very well!

^F^

Participant@Gpo1 That’s a great idea. Maybe they can work together with the MrMaz who already is working on a similar plugin that allows for not just photos but also other media attachments: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/attachments-for-activity-items

KeymasterYou should probably look at the “Auto Join Groups” plugin:
http://brentandmary.net/2009/10/24/bn-auto-join-group-plugin/
It does what you want it to do, but automatically from the admin area.
Haven’t tested this in BP 1.2 though.
Might want to contact the dev of that plugin if it doesn’t work.

Also it is quite easy to modify DJPaul’s Welcome Pack plugin to auto-join groups as well.
See my post here:

Update:
Just came across a plugin called “BP Registration Groups”:

Purports to do exactly what you want, Bowe.
March 20, 2010 at 1:03 am #69372In reply to: Editing Forum heat map (tag cloud) settings
snark
Participant@DJPaul — I tried tweaking the function you gave me — it didn’t create an error, but it didn’t work either. Here’s what I tried:
/* Customized heat map (tag cloud) function */
function bp_forums_tag_heat_map_x( $args = '' ) {
$defaults = array(
'smallest' => '10',
'largest' => '18',
'sizing' => 'px',
'limit' => '100',
'orderby' => 'name',
'order' => 'ASC'
);
$r = wp_parse_args( $args, $defaults );
extract( $r, EXTR_SKIP );
bb_tag_heat_map( $smallest, $largest, $sizing, $limit, $orderby, $order );
}I tried adding ‘orderby’ and ‘order’ arguments, but it didn’t work. Does anybody know how to tweak this function I’m using in my child theme to change the display order of the Forum tag cloud? By default it orders by most occurrences first and then in order of creation, so all new tags don’t even show up. I’d like to include tags by most occurrences, but then order them alphabetically. Thanks.

MemberBoone! Thanks so much. The 0.2.1 version seems to have the basics covered enough for me to be comfortable using it on a production site. A couple remaining things you might want to address:
BTW WP 2.9.2 BP 1.2.2.1 default theme
If I “edit” an existing post in the forum it shows me the file uploading stuff, goes through the motions, but doesn’t actually upload anything. This is ok IMHO (not being able to add files to an existing post) but if that’s how things are meant to be maybe you could just not show the uploading buttons when the user is editing an existing instead of posting fresh? That way people aren’t confused. Especially since editing a post that already has an attachment only allows you to edit the text…the existing attachment doesn’t appear on the “edit” page.
Also there is still some type of conflict for me with Rich Fuller’s Forum Extras plugin wrapper. Either works, but when both are active my main /groups/ redirects to the site’s home page. Also groups will only show the “forum” tab for that group – clicking the tabs for other areas in the group (such “members” etc) change the URL but the forum remains visible instead of the intended area.
