ParticipantIn the Dashboard there is a “Forums Setup” link under the “BuddyPress” menu. Should be a simple two click process assuming you’re running a stable version (i.e. 1.1.3. I don’t believe the bbPress files are included in the trunk versions).

ParticipantCheck this thread in Plugins forum https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/buddypress-contents-10-plugin-released-tags-categories-in-bp
Burt is MIA and there are other users who have at least done some updating.
There doesn’t seem to be a clear line between creating/extending and plugins so searching forums is key.
I’ll again put in a plug for BPCONTENTS going core.

Participantthanks r-a-y, i tried jjj’s technique but had a flaw… not loading a css for the adminbar style, so in all the styles i have for the bbpress, nowhere the adminbar is looking where it is supposed to or with the style needed… i will explode, sadly bbpress is not integrating the style, and i may simply drop it from the original plans… but i need a real forum, the version in BP is just hectic

KeymasterTry JJJ’s BuddyBar in bbPress plugin:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddybar-in-bbpress/
Or the manual method:

ParticipantThis works ok if you are not using bbpress: if you are, the date posted in group forum will be reflected as “Posted -1 years ago” in bbpress post! With this, the whole post navigation in bbpress will start with earliest first, and first post at the last page (which is 1yr in future).
Arghh.. can someone help.
thanks

Participanthi all, was experimenting with my new integrated bp/bb site and have this question. I created a group in bp with forum/wire enabled; and i could see this being created in bbpress as well.
In bbpress admin, i deleted a forum and moved all its contents (topics and posts) to the newly created forum (and group in bp). All the posts were moved fine and I can read/edit/post them in bbpress. However, in bp group forum; i can only see the topics (with information that the topic has x posts etc etc); but these topics are really not linked to any posts i.e. the link is just pointing to http://mysite.com/groups/groupname/topic// ?? No links.
It this a bp limitation (not properly converting topics/posts moved from bbpress to the newly created bp groups? )? How to fix this?
thanks

r-a-y
KeymasterI like the new activity commenting; this is light years better than what we currently have.
I know you’re still working on this, Andy, but forum topics and activity threads are duplicated.
Forum topics / responses should not have activity commenting enabled. If a comment is made, perhaps add it as a forum reply instead?
Great work! I can’t wait for this to be released.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that blog activity comments should be actual blog comments as well… probably a little tricky here. A possible workaround could be to add a “Community Reactions” block to the blog post in question where activity comments would be listed? Kind of like a trackback or something?

KeymasterOut of the box, BuddyPress is designed for all elements to be created equal. Groups are no more important than friends are no more important than activity are no more important than forums are no more important than directories are no more important than… You get the idea… It’s up to a good theme designer and a great developer to make the functions of BuddyPress pop-out and turn a WordPress site into a meetup.com or linkedin.com.
All of the elements exist in the core and in external plugins to do it, it just has yet to be done.

ParticipantRe; forum. I had bbpress already installed and pointed buddypress to bb-config.php. After doing the upgrade to 1.1.3 buddypress lost that information and was looking for the forum in plugins/budypress/bp-forums/. I copied bbpress manually to this folder and things are OK now, I hope.

Re: User Rights. I use LDAP and if I add LDAP users via Admin area, changing their rights works OK. However if I let a user account be created as soon as the user logins for the first time via LDAP that sets the user lever to Author. When I change this user lever to Editor it goes back to Author after user logs in and attempts to do some editing (blog post/page).
So I give ldapUser1 Edit rights to blog123. ldapUser1 logs in and goes to edit a page in the blog. ‘Edit this entry’ message shows up. User clicks on it and gets a message ‘You are not allowed to edit this page.’ at the same time user rights reset back to Author.
This might be a bug with LDAP plugin?! Will test it with WPMU + LDAP only.

ParticipantDon’t forget that for the forums to work you need the bbpress folder in bp-forums. I was pretty puzzled when installing from trac the other day.

Participantno, the forum(the one which you have not installed externally) is associated with groups.
When you create a group and allow associating forums with it, you can manage that forum from the Group admin screen.
That’s what Xevo pointed.
Hope It helps.

ParticipantDJPaul offers good advice… A similar issue was raised and confirmed here:
https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/1265
This issue was resolved (in my case) by upgrading to the version 1.1.3 (just came out). See release history:
https://buddypress.org/about/release-history/#1.1.3
If you still have an issue, try disabling Buddypress and try to reproduce the problem. If the issue is still there without Buddypress, search in the MU forums.

ParticipantIt makes sense to me, but in my experience, it does confuse new users. They don’t get that the forums page is simply a directory lists of GROUP forums. It is a bit of a mental leap. Makes sense once you “get it”. But yes. I’ve had users in my test group ask me why we have both Groups with Forums and Forums. They don’t understand at first that it’s just two views of the same thing.

ParticipantI think you’re looking at this from the wrong perspective. BP is not so much about forums as it is about groups….that happen to have forums. That’s on purpose. If you want to crate a site that’s just a big forum with some sub-categorization then you already have the tools (style your own bbPress) to do that. BP lets a community of users create topically organized “groups” and aggregate content and activity around that group. The forum part is just one component of that. Soon, media, events – you name it – will all be a part of that group collective. With activity stream commenting, Andy is merely opening up avenues to add to those topical constructs from all over the site. The forums view that was added recently, imo, is more of a throwback to traditional bb styling that appeased the old way of interacting and helped make the transition smoother for some. On our site, users love the fact that engagement is silo’d when it needs to be and aggregated when it should be. Hope this helps.
