    I am also curious about what the difference is between using an existing install and using one by the buddypress rules.

    Will I keep a normal forum and will I get the group forums if I use an existing install or will it convert a normal forum to group forums only like the one click install does?

    Since you are specifically asking about server setup, I’ll assume that you are either talking about a dedicated server that you’ll be leasing from a hosting provider, or a box that you will be setting up from scratch at your home or office.

    Unfortunately, there are just too many variables to give a patent answer to that question. But here is a BP thread that might shed some light:

    https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/buddypress-and-shared-hosting

    For everyone else wondering what the bare minimum setup they need in order to have a healthy working relationship with WPMU + BP, I always provide this caveat: don’t expect to get great, or even decent, performance from a a shared hosting account. It just won’t happen. Of course there are some that claim to have several hundred active users working without issue on a shared account. That could be the case. However, in my opinion, a shared hosting setup is out of the question for a really robust, business-oriented site.

    There are many, many threads over at the WPMU forums on hosting providers, server requirements, etcetera. That is probably the best place to seek advice on such matters.

    I don’t know, but for me it looks like this could be the same error I have with the forum directory.

    I posted my question hire, but no replay till now.

    Hello,

    I have WPMU 2.8.4.a en Buddypress 1.1.1 I try to use the Allow Images plugin (no admin page) (https://bbpress.org/plugins/topic/allow-images/). I made a folder my-plugins (under wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-forums/bbpress) and placed the file allow-images.php in this folder, with no result. Is there a way to activate this plugin?

    Moving the bbPress dir to mu-plugins seems me tricky? What if there is a new Buddypress release?

    Thanks for your help!

    I answered this in another post, https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/new-blog-theme-available-for-the-groupblog-plugin, however that addresses only the dashboard link.

    If you would like to also display additional links, e.g. new post, edit posts, new page, edit pages, new link, etc. Send me a pm message and I will send you a drop in code for both your buddypress group template and bp-groupblog theme template.

    It is almost the same as the code mentioned in the post above, but also pulls in user roles and set some conditional values based on that.

    @DJPaul, thanks for the feedback and the info you offer. My basics:

    1. wpmu 2.8.4a

    2. subdomain

    3. n/a

    4. upgraded WPMU regularly since 2.7

    5. Was WPMU functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress? yes

    6. BP 1.1.1

    7. Did you upgraded from a previous version of BP? last week when the current version was released.

    8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated? Yes, 2 were activated on the main admin when and since this has occured:

    a. Group Forum Subscription for BuddyPress

    b. BP Groupblog

    In mu-plugins directory:

    akismet-credit-inserter

    akismet

    sitewide-tags

    wordpressmu-favicon

    9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes? Standard

    10. Have you modified the core files in any way? No

    11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php? No

    12. If running bbPress, which version? Or did your BuddyPress install come with a copy of bbPress built-in? Using built-in bbPress

    13. The errors that occurred during the period these member place holders ’empty’ were created are at the link. The IDs # were different. With bp-groupblog activated this error is generated any time any group is visited (the group doesn’t need to have a groupblog). Prior to this ‘event’, Groupblogs were activated when members joined other groups without any ’empty’ members being added to the group:

    https://wordpress.org/support/topic/319417

    Some blogs (not home blog) have feedwordpress plugin activated. It’s use generates errors/warnings. The ‘Failed to fetch’ started yesterday and the plugin is no longer functioning. Neither of these errors are logged around the time the ’empty’ members were added to groups:

    [20-Oct-2009 17:15:32] PHP Warning: Illegal offset type in /home/xxxx/public_html/wp-includes/rss.php on line 1459

    [20-Oct-2009 17:34:20] MagpieRSS: Failed to fetch (HTTP Error: <url> malforme)

    Not seen that before. Very odd. Could you run through https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/when-asking-for-support so we can check the basics?

    @Detective Thanks for the fix! it worked!

    https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/wp-sigupphp-and-register#post-26127

    By the way, for those of you that are wondering, you have to add Detective’s fix to your theme’s functions.php file!

    I was also having the error where the code was stopping at:

    <script type=”text/javascript”>var ajaxurl = “http://yourdomain.com/wp-signup.php&#8221;;</script>

    Detective, How exactly did you figure this out and how does the fix work and why are we getting this error? This should be a fix for the next release of BuddyPress.

    Also, everyone, make sure you copy over the functions in the “functions.php” file from the bp-sn-parent theme to the “functions.php” file in your own theme. Without these functions, some things won’t work like member and blog listings as well as sidebar customization when using the “home.php” template.

    Widgets displaying on certain blogs/pages is probably something you are best searching the WordPress forum/plugin directory for, as it’s not something that BuddyPress implements.

    The text “The default theme for BuddyPress” cannot be translated as it is in a .css file. As only the site administrator will see that text when they activate the theme, is it a big issue? The other text here is part of WordPress.

    The wrong path thing is more interesting and there are some other forum posts here with that problem. I don’t know when I will get time to look into it so maybe someone else can help.

    What do you mean by that?

    I’m using BuddyPress of course. But I just don’t want to add a plugin for a simple action like that.

    I just want to add the last ten titles from the buddypress/bbpress side in the footer.

    Activate “forum” in your BP general settings.

    I found the answer myself, so maybe it can help other people. It’s the fault of the Events plugin, when you deactivate this plugin everything works again. Hopefully there will be an update of this plugin soon, because I really need this functionallity. If there is a workaround for this problem, please let me know.

    Thanks

    I’m not sure I understand what setup you’ve got. Are you using BP 1.1 and also deep integration with bbPress?

    What linking is it that you want?

    In short – I don’t know of any linking between forums in groups and the “external” bbPress forums (with deep integration). If that’s what you’re asking?

    SOME HELP PLEASE!!!

    I’m very confused.

    If I look into the function, I can’t find the parameter ” most-forum-topics “.

    There is just active ( default ) | random | newest | popular.

    But its working in the directory/forums view.

    function bp_has_site_groups( $args = '' ) {
    global $site_groups_template;

    $defaults = array(
    'type' => 'active',
    'per_page' => 10,
    'max' => false
    );

    $r = wp_parse_args( $args, $defaults );
    extract( $r, EXTR_SKIP );

    // type: active ( default ) | random | newest | popular

    if ( $max ) {
    if ( $per_page > $max )
    $per_page = $max;
    }

    $site_groups_template = new BP_Groups_Site_Groups_Template( $type, $per_page, $max );
    return apply_filters( 'bp_has_site_groups', $site_groups_template->has_groups(), &$site_groups_template );
    }

    As a rule of thumb, it’s always best to state what version numbers you’re using when asking for troubleshooting support, as well as a clear explanation of what you did.

    How did you install bbPress?

    If you’re using BuddyPress 1.1, there should be a one-click install for bbPress; you shouldn’t have to install bbPress separately.

    More info about bbPress in BP 1.1 can be found here:

    https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-discussions/buddypress-forum/

    Sorry if that wasn’t much help!

    I’m not on BP 1.1+ yet!

    @Jacoby who wrote “I’m curious how many queries other social network sites use on a single page load.”

    I was too, and saw that it varies widely — from about 40 queries per page for the commercial SocialEngine script (which now includes Zend fragment and full page caching, very nice) to the mind-blowing 1.364 queries just to show the Dashboard on Elgg as reported in Elgg’s own forum. As for Drupal, it makes a similar number of queries per page as BuddyPress (of course it depends on the number of modules, etc) and with that level it is such a mess that Jesse Farmer, the main developer for Popsugar (the most trafficked social network built on Drupal) abandoned the project and wrote on a developers forum that Drupal is impossible to scale and “it would have been easier to start from scratch”. And bear in mind that Popsugar got $5 million from Sequoia Capital, so they have plenty of money to “throw hardware” at the problem.

    @DJPaul, who said “Your post is not very constructive as you haven’t suggested a particular page on a site which interested developers could look into – saying that the entire thing needs attention may be valid, but we need to start from somewhere.”

    I am not a coder, so how about starting here: I will pay $500 dollars to the person or team that reduces the number of queries on the main Buddypress blog page to around 20 (which is the normal number for a WordPress blog running the default theme). I am ready to escrow this money on the site of their preference.

    What do you mean by “Play”… sorry, I am not much of a coder… I do not need the old content, but I need the forums to work in old groups. Would be great, if you could give me a step by step guide :-) (if that is not asking too much)

    Thanks already!
