Selecting a post’s wordpress privacy to “private” makes it private to everyone but you. Is there a way to have certain blog posts only viewable to those who register with your buddypress site? Thanks
In BP, if a WordPress article visibility is to Private so only site members can see it, its message for non-users is misleading.
It will say “Page Not Found. The page you were looking for was not found.”
Is there a way to have it tell the user the page exists but they must login or join the site to see it? Also, if a page truly doesn’t exist, that page message should remain. Any suggestions? Thank you.
Hi all,
I am planning to turn a 10 year old but popular spaghetti-coded html/php mishmash of a site into something more, well, current and valid

Starting points:
– The domain is live and currently running on a simple Hostgator account (it is amazing how much traffic that can handle if you are not PHP-heavy).
– I have a Hybrid Server, which has already one other WPMU/BP community running, so I know the basics and have the resources.
– I want to build the new site -stealth- while the old one is still live and then when all seems well and ready, ‘flick the switch’.
Would this be the best practice or am I thinking wrong?:
– Install the new BP on a (temporary) domain on the new server and then populate it while being hidden to Google, regular visitors etc.
– Once everything is working, update MySql to the domain I really want to use.
– Change name servers to point to new server, change HTPPD.conf info for new (old) domain.
– Ready?
Am I missing something here and could you help me with the following:
– What is the best way to populate a ‘live’ (on a public server) site, view/test it online, but keep it hidden/private for non-admins (to prevent copycats, leaking, Google indexing etc)? The ‘privacy settings do no offer this choice? do I need a plugin for that?
– Which way to Chenge the Site url is working best (see http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL ), are the 2 ‘defines’ enough currently?
Many thanks for your help,
Cheers, Harry
Folks, I am NOT one to flame or rage about free stuff, or even paid stuff sometimes not functioning optimally. That’s not what this is.
I did, however, put the word “two-facedness” into the title of this post…which might ruffle some feathers…however, I do hope the ruffling will be happy and that we’ll all come out happier on the other side.
I’ll start with the issue of BuddyPress Forums, and the theme at buddypress.org would also be a viable point of discussion.
1) When you download BuddyPress, the forums do not work the way they do at BuddyPress.org. It seems (to me) to make sense that BuddyPress present itself as what it is, and that when folks download BuddyPress, it would work the way BuddyPress.org works.
Am I wrong about that? Is that an appropriate expectation on my part? Am I just foolhardy in thinking that BuddyPress the software will work the way BuddyPress.org does? Is that just not the way the development cycle works?
Also, if that’s the case, setting expectations upon download (with some nice words from the development team) would help a lot.
2) When I install BuddyPress, the themes don’t work the way they do at BuddyPress.org. If they did, I would not have agonized with the Member Blog Themes issue since April 09 or so.
Now, I understand that there is a price to pay when one joins a community. One essentially has to learn the ropes before one is treated as an insider. But is that what’s going on? Are there BuddyPress insiders who basically know how to do stuff and use the software BuddyPress as a lead generation tool for clients?
So, then, the software BuddyPress does not work “as advertised” that is, the way BuddyPress.org does, and then people need to pay to get their sites to work the way they would like.
If that is the case, that’s fine, it would just make sense for me then, that the consulting prices would be listed and available, because I’d like to be able to move forward more easily.
So, does that make BuddyPress two-faced?
…and then, to close: Is that ethical?
I ask, not because I want to complain (even though, just maybe, sometimes I do want to complain, and I feel like I’m a positive enough Joe to have any and all of my complaints turn into…well…joy really).
Anyway, I ask because I want to know how to resolve the issue of not knowing how to create forums in BuddyPress:
http://buddypress.org/forums/topic/how-to-create-forums-in-bbpress-within-buddypress
http://buddypress.org/forums/topic/how-to-create-a-main-theme-in-buddypressbbpress-forums
http://buddypress.org/forums/topic/bp-12-and-bbpress-adminplugins
http://buddypress.org/forums/topic/how-to-access-to-bbpress-admin-from-buddypress
http://buddypress.org/forums/topic/whats-the-code-for-the-way-buddypressorg-displays-its-forums
http://buddypress.org/forums/topic/how-to-create-forums
Now, I’ve basically come out and asked for the code that makes BuddyPress, the software, work the way BuddyPress.org works. Actually, more specifically, I’ve just how I can get the forums in my install to display the way they do at BuddyPress.org.
If it is a “pay to play” kind of situation, then that’s really OK.
But then I find myself in the odd situation of “someone who knows how to do what I’m looking to do could likely tell me how to do it in 5 minutes.” So, does that mean that even at $120 per hour, the $10 someone would make by spending 5 minutes on skype with me is too little? So that’s why I wind up with dead-end posts?
I’ve also offered to record the skype videos (and I’ve been in a few private email discussions with some folks here), and I’m happy to pay for the time, and would even publish the videos. However, someone has to actually step up and say “I can help you make those forums appear,” and I guess, I feel I need to understand a bit better how this support community works.
Many of you are super busy, and some of you could likely have shown me, in a skype call, how to do what I’m looking to do faster than it took you to read what I’m writing.
That’s kind of goofy…
So, please, can you let me know how to resolve this?
Do I pay someone?
Do I wait?
Do I post even more of the same posts?
Do I just consider myself ignored and go away?
Sincerely, a slight bit frustrated, but wholly open to your guidance, feedback and commentary.
There are public, private and hidden groups, but I need one that is somewhere in between public and private.
I want an announcement type group were anyone can join, but only moderators or admins are able to post. Is this possible with the default install of BP, or do I need to code this myself?
I’ve considered blocking group creation to admins but this would only stifle a community; if members are unable to create their own area. But I also want to avoid numerous small groups (lets say <25) or a group that becomes stale with no interest with a lack of members.
Essentially the process would be standard :: create a group (public, private, hidden), avatar, description, send invites :: but all other items (extensions of a group, forum, updates, etc) are suspended until the group member number hits a threshold. (admins can override, displayed in a different group filter to find pending groups)
Unfortunately, I’m not familiar with BuddyPress coding – is this possible to hook into setting some sort of bp_groups_groupmeta?
(think i’ve spent too many years moderating a large forum where you can’t always trust the members)
Topic: Privacy comments and blogs
I have a private group with no way I can find to delete it. I believe the creator of the group was deleted.
I need to find a permanent solution that would allow me to HIDE user IP addresses and email in the comments, and the backend admin. Really everywhere.
I can manually edit pluggable.php and comment-template.php in the includes folder, but each time I update they invariably are overwritten and I have to do it all over again.
Does anyone know of a plugin for this or have another solution?
Thanks!
I’m trying to limit the private information that is being displayed to anyone that happens to create a blog.
I use this plugin to e able to have a blog that is not visible to anyone other than members of that blog.
http://wpmudev.org/project/More-Privacy-Options
it sort of works. i had to use this plugin to get the blogposts to not show up in activity streams:
http://blogs.zmml.uni-bremen.de/olio/2010/01/12/activity-privacy-plugin-for-buddypress/
but it doesnt hide the comments
how can i create a fully private blog withouth having the comments beeing listed in activity stream? 100% private
i use:
wpmu 2.9.1.1
bp 1.2-rc2 rev 2638
