Topic: Creating a custom component
Okay, I know I’ve made posts about this before, but I’ve always left out information because I thought if I got it rolling, I could take it over myself.
I’ve been working with bp-events, bp-skeleton component just trying to get a new component working, and nothing is working. There are always errors. (probably because I don’t know what I’m doing)
So I’m not afraid to admit that I have no idea what I’m doing, and I need HELP.
Here’s what I would like:
I would like a component, that allows an administrator to create a “Group” called a “Featured Group”. It is exactly that, a group, which is featured.
It will allow users to JOIN but NOT CREATE. It will still show up in there profiles in a “Featured Groups” tab in the user bar, but in the options bar there will be no “Create a Featured Group” button.
The Featured Groups would be on a separate directory from the “Groups Directory”. And the features of the Featured Group are as follows:
- Choose Avatar
- Wire
- News
- Forum
- Users can Join/Request Membership
I realize that these are very basic things just as the Groups are, but I just wanted a separate thing to create them.
UNLESS:
There is a way that I can just create a normal group, and only the admin can select if it is a Featured Group (much like how you would select Public Group, Private Group, and Hidden Group).
So if there is a plugin, or a way to create, so that an Administrator can select that a group can be featured, allowing it to be posted on another directory. Then that would be fantastic, and a lot simpler.
I hope I’m clear with what I’m saying.
Just ask and I’ll clarify anything.
Love some of the ideas behind BuddyPress.
But I’m worried that it might grant TOO much flexibility to my users.
Basically, on my WPMU install, I want pretty much everything to happen off the MAIN blog. I don’t WANT them to be able to create their own forums, I want one common forum off the main blog.
I *do* want them to be able to do private messaging, “friend” each other and so on. And if somebody wants to create a group? Awesome. But create it off the main blog.
Is BuddyPress too much for my install? Is bbpress on its own, too little?
another feature that looks like a bug. Why shouldn’t private group have the recent activities section? they should have.
I have around 15,000 members registered in my WPMU installation and I tried enabling Private Messaging in BuddyPress for a few days.
Within around 2 weeks, 20,000+ messages were sent through Private Messaging – 99% of them being spam. Most of my members received messages through emails and got furious.
I disabled Private Messaging around a month ago and have been visiting this forum frequently to see if there has been any solution.
When the messaging was still enabled a month ago, I kept checking the messaging table in database and kept marking the users as spam who would send hundreds of messages in one go. I had successfully enabled recaptcha on the wordpress signup, but it was not useful as spammers were manually registering and sending lots of messages via scripts.
I have got few questions:
– Is there a way to at least disable the email notification globally for everyone, with an option of manually enabling for anyone who needs it?
– Can someone help in adding recaptha on the compose message page? I am willing to pay for these services.
– Is there is any other way someone can suggest to limit the spam via private messaging?
Thanks in advance!

). It’s also in my opinion not intuitive.
