Participanti have the same problem…

LPH2005
ParticipantYou might start out small. Install BuddyPress and enable just the activity stream; disable everything else. Make sure that the theme css works well with the activity stream. You’ll need to install the BuddyPress template pack. After you are satisfied with the activity stream then change WP install to multi-site. You’ll want to lock it down so that you control creation of blogs – so that you don’t have to deal with splogs. Once you have that working then you can add a few other BP features – private messaging, etc.

MemberThanks for the reply. Been looking at some group docs extensions. I would also need one to allow users to upload and share documents with each other outside of groups. Will have a go at developing one but don’t want to repeat work if it’s already been done.

ParticipantBP is CPU and memory-hungry on top of regular WP requirements. Depending on what web host you’re using, if you’re on a shared hosting plan, it may just be dieing due to hard limits on resources. I ran a small BP install (along with other sites) on a Dreamhost shared account for while, but have since moved to a virtual private server, because, well: it’s heavy.
That may or may not be the problem.

MemberOK I had aply but still need some help please. What I have done followed a hack from another thread by @r-a-y to move the activity thread along the tabs and make the forum one home – so at least when people look at the group it does not confuse them. This along with making the thread private means that the Main Activity thread does not get cluttered with group posts. Not ideal – but will have to do.
This though causes another issue – if you click Group Directory – you get no topics found – further confusion to the users. If I turn off Group Directory in the settings, the button still remains – but if you click the button it goes to the site home page – more confusion to users.
Can anyone help me my problem another way?
Seems Groups are not very well thought through

MemberOK editing the php.ini file is a little out of my league. My host won’t let me do it but if I understand the UNIX shell I can reinstall another ini (I have no idea how to do this) so I believe the patches root is the way to go for me. Can you recommend either someone who has successfully done this or a tutorial you or buddypress has for this? Also – when will the patched version be released? Thanks again for all your help!

@vegasparty607 erm yes and that link is to an American educational resource! try looking up a general one and you will find that there are exceptions and differences to the use or not of a comma and ‘and’

KeymasterClosing topic. This is not the place to argue about grammatical syntax in English language.

ParticipantI’m not arguing. I’m just saying you have a grammatical error, but obviously you don’t want to fix it.

Paul Wong-Gibbs
KeymasterIf you lot want to argue spelling, or grammar, or punctuation, do it on your own blogs or another discussion forum. Not here.
My only comment will be that I do not view this as an error. This may be a British/American English thing, but I’m certainly not well-informed enough.

ParticipantIn proper English grammar there is a comma.
`Joe, Bill, and Phil went to the store.`

Hugo Ashmore
ParticipantNot necessarily. In what version of English do you write? The tendency to add the comma before the word ‘and’ is, as far as I recall, an Americanism; in English English you wouldn’t have the last comma the ‘and’ makes it redundant.

MemberThx for your help. I am trying to get the host to make the switch. I’ll update this post and explain what happens.
June 8, 2011 at 6:22 am #114116Paul Wong-Gibbs
KeymasterIf you don’t know where you php.ini is, ask your host. Setting allow_call_time_pass_reference will prevent the error being generated (you could apply patches to your version of BuddyPress to fix the errors, but that is more involved).
June 5, 2011 at 6:34 pm #113939In reply to: Adding Dating Function to a Buddypress site
@mercime
ParticipantBy dating you mean something like match.com or eharmony.com? Have not seen a BP plugin that does that.
Simplest way could be to use Friend feature and Private Messages with additional layers of privacy so “Friends/Dates” cannot see how many “Dates/Friends” you already have

MemberHi, I run RiotCart
Just wanted to pop in and say that I’m no longer using the BP groups component for anything but a private group/forum for my vendors. If you’d like to see the working parts of the site (which is in the midst of an overhaul, so be kind), you can do so here: http://www.riotcart.comI personally think that WordPress is a great platform for running an online shop, and have set up many standalone ecommerce sites for individual crafters using it in conjunction with my personal favorite shopping cart plugin, eShop. This is actually what led to the idea for RiotCart, which is more of a venue for crafters to set up a shop/site in the RC network, rather than a shop in itself. The only thing that RC sells is the monthly shop hosting terms. We use Buddypress more for the shoppers themselves, as it gave me a starting point from which I’ve implimented a p2p feedback system, a “wishlist” feature, and more. I’ve tried offering members the BP groups several different times, and the concept never seems to take off.

ParticipantHere is a recap of some posts I posted at http://buddydev.com recently:
I use Bp-Cosmic-Pro Theme built of of bp-mag and have about one spam registration per couple of weeks (and it’s usually a real person that registers and gets through)… They are caught within minutes of posting something ridiculous and marked as spammers by the admins.
There are a number of reasons for that:
1. It’s a closed/ register only site (but free to all), (note: I do not require e-mail validation either)
2. I use BuddyPress Humanity Anti-Spam Plugin
3. I use Si-Captcha Anti-Spam
3. Multiple Profile fields are required to be filled-in at registration as an ANTI-SPAM measure – in part.
4. I have a TERMS and use that Requires THE CHECKING of a box to register.
5. I use the bad behavior plugin to keep out the crazies and use the Blocking-list feature of it.Occasionally, I get the I can’t register e-mail, but it is rare and there is a note for people to contact me if they can’t register properly… I have 1700 active (non-spam users) on my site and virtually no SPAM.
I believe one of the keys to success here is that it is a “private site” and as such it’s not indexed (I realize this could be a problem for many sites, but not my niche site). So, sites don’t scrape it as a potential source to attack.
I would also recommend the ANIMAL BuddyPress Captcha plugin.
*****************************
I usually think about SPAM protection in the form of a Castle for open community WordPress Sites:
1. The Moat: Programs like Bad-Behavior and plugins that stop bots/scrapers before they get “through” to the site.
2. The Gate/Drawbridge: Programs like Captchas, Math Challenges, Reverse fields that SHOULDN’T be filled in to “trap” bots from auto-filling.
3. The Keep: Programs like Akismet.
4. The Guards: Moderators with the ability to knock out spam when they see it.The biggest issue with BuddyPress is that THERE IS NO KEEP (no. 3 above) for the Activity Streams…
As far as I know, there are not programs like Akismet or any of the “KARMA” / Comment anti-spam plugins that work for the BuddyPress group/activity/forum streams… DJ-PAUL has talked about making Akismet work on BuddyPress Streams at the BuddyPress.org site, but there is nothing yet that I know of yet –If anyone does know of something that will “auto-moderate” the BuddPress Stream updates/comments, please let me know…

Regards.

MemberThanks, Paul.
What I like about buddypress is the privacy. You can have the outward frontpage showing the yearly schedule & upcoming events, but the discussions would be private and you’d have to register as a member.
If ALL I wanted was a forum, I would start a facebook group. But facebook forums can’t really be searched and they are bulkier to navigate. You can’t have a separate forum for leaders, boy scouts, and cub scouts.
A mailing list wouldn’t be perfect either, too hard to find Useful Pages and too hard for a newbie to find useful information.

MemberYes as Brandon says
The solution is to add
define( ’BP_ENABLE_USERNAME_COMPATIBILITY_MODE’, true );
to the top of the define list in the wp-config.php file. Fixed for things like john.smith not sure about other characters.
Thanks Brandon – though I figured it out a wee while ago from a similar problem posted in BuddyPress Trac.

edit:
I just solved. There seems to be a problem with buddypress copy/paste system. I just “retyped” the code, and it’s working like a charm. Thank you for your time.
