    I believe you’ve found a bug.
    The Base group allows an admin to set default visibility levels.
    I was going to suggest you set each field to “logged-in users” and allow users to change their visibility.

    But those settings are not honored on the register form.

    You can submit a bug here.
    https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/
    Log in with the same user / pw you use for these forums.

    Also – do you also see “This field can be seen by: etc. ” under each Base field on the register page?
    And a ‘change’ link?

    There is a check in register.php, but it apparently fails by returning true for logged out users.

    `if ( bp_current_user_can( ‘bp_xprofile_change_field_visibility’ ) ) `

    How can I add fields to the Base profile group (Location and Profession) but not have them appear on the registration form?

    I’d like to have the fields appear under “base” when members want to edit their profile but do not want the fields to be visible on sign up as too many fields to complete might put people off registering.

    I’m sorry @jancbeck, I wasn’t understanding what you wanted. Now I do and can’t think of a way, but if I come across of something, make sure I will let you know.

    Thanks your for your answer. I guess I did not make myself clear enough.

    Each user should be able to add as many of these fields as he or she likes. If one had done many jobs in his career one would require a lot of the aforementioned fields. If I’m a young grad student there are probably not gonna be too much. That’s why each user should be able to duplicate the initial field group to have as many as he wants.

    I don’t think Buddypress can do this out of the box. I looked at database structure and it seems each user can only have one field assigned to field of a group (1:n relationship).

    You can add as much as fields as you want. The students would fill them according in their seetings page (here you could change the name for one more appealing) and those fields are searchable by default so you would not have a problem with it.

    Bu BuddyPress does all you want out of the box.

    I’m developing student alumni network powered by Buddypress where students should be able to build their own CV / résumé based on a template of xprofile fields.

    Job Title [ input field ]
    Job Description [ textarea ]
    Job Started [ date picker ]
    Job Ended [ date picker ]
    Job Attachments [ multiple document upload ]

    Each student should add as many of these field groups as necessary to build a comprehensive CV. Oh, and these fields should still be searchable.

    Any suggestions on how to do this?

    @tux-kapono
    This can be done out of the box. In the dashboard/users/profile fields create a new profile field under base because this is the fields in registration and under “Is this field required” make it required. In “field type” choose checkboxes. Under “please enter options for this Field:” just leave sort as is and in the text field below it type “I Agree To The Sites Terms Of Service” (This can be what you want really just a suggestion). Under “Default Visibility” check Default value. And That wraps it up really.
    @mahdiar
    Suggesting as a trac ticket is not necessary. Its already there if you just do the follow the instructions given!

    I have a buddypress x_profile field named Video and I’d like to embed the URL (using the WP oEmbed functionality) into a post within the loop. I’m using bp_profile_field_data() and the user_id is the author of the post.

    I’m successfully getting the video URL to show but it’s not embedded. Here’s what I have so far:

    $current_author = get_the_author_meta('ID');
    if ( $video_url = bp_profile_field_data(array('user_id'=>$current_author,'field'=>'Video' )) );
    echo wp_oembed_get( $video_url );

    I’m currently using the latest installs of WordPress (3.5.1) and Buddypress (1.7).

    Any help/suggestions is greatly appreciated. I’ve been successful in using the same code when it comes to embedding custom fields but I’m not sure why this is only showing the URL.

    Hi @gsj,

    Add this code to functions.php file of the current theme.

    `
    add_filter(‘bp_xprofile_get_hidden_fields_for_user’,’bp_define_hidden_fields’, 10 ,3 );
    function bp_define_hidden_fields( $hidden_fields, $displayed_user_id, $current_user_id ) {
    //if not admin or if not the the profile of the current user
    if ( !is_super_admin( $current_user_id) && ($displayed_user_id != $current_user_id) ) {
    //add name field ( id = 1 ) to the hidden fields
    $hidden_fields[] = 1;
    }
    return $hidden_fields;
    }

    Hello.
    I installed the BP Theme Pack, but I would like to customize it further to my needs.

    1.) Is it possible to install the theme pack directly to my theme, so it remains within my theme folder?

    2.) Is it possible (I’m not sure if this is a wordpress or buddypress question itself) to have an external process that runs and inputs data directly into the users database? I want the profile icon and some of the custom fields I created to be syncronized with a site. I know I can run a process daily to do this, but which table fields should I take a look at in order to do this?

    Thanks a lot!

    I’m using a Multi-line Text Box as one of the profile fields on the registration page. However, the line breaks are not appearing on the user’s profile page. Any help is appreciated.

    I’m using the code below to display the user’s input.

    ` bp_member_profile_data( ‘field=Description’); `

    Thanks,
    John

    I am running WordPress Multisite 3.5.1 in the root directory. When I had everything setup correctly after installing BuddyPress it broke some of the profile fields on some users. I am running BuddyPress 1.7. I have the following latest versions of plugins and none of them from trial and error did anything:

    • Bad Behavior
    • bbPress
    • Blubrry PowerPress
    • BuddyPress
    • Flowplayer 5 for WordPress
    • Jetpack by WordPress.com
    • SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam
    • Wordfence Security
    • WordPress MU Domain Mapping
    • WP Maintenance Mode

    I was upgrading from BP Beta 2 and had no problems before. I am hosted on Linode and web server is Apache.

    WordPress 3.5.1

    BuddyPress: Version 1.7
    bbPress: Version 2.2.4
    BuddyPress Docs: Version 1.3.3

    Using with Genesis theme (custom child theme)
    Genesis: Version 1.9.1

    Other plugins:
    bbPress Genesis Extend: Version 0.8.4
    BuddyPress Toolbar: Version 1.5.1

    —
    Problems:
    (1) I can’t seem to create any new groups.

    (2) Nothing shows up on the member list (should be 3 users).

    (3) Nothing shows up on the activity stream (should be at least a couple new things).

    (4) The new registration page is only asking for new username and password, but there are quite a few more fields set up under Dashboard > Users > Profile Fields.

    (5) When logged in to forum, if I hover over top-right toolbar (to see profile, etc.), and if I click on one of those links (activity, profile, etc.), it says “page not found.”

    (6) On the base forum page forums-base/ I see ALL the forums listed repeatedly down the page, over and over again. Also, I set this page up (by creating a new page called “forums-base”) and adding a shortcode [bbp-forum-index] and some descriptive text, but this is not what is showing.

    I am using WordPress 3.5.1 and Buddypress 1.7.

    I am using the Buddypress extended profile fields and am having issues with the display when editing profile fields. For example, I have a state list where the user can check what states apply to them (checkbox type field). This is currently a vertical list so it displays 52 options straight down. What I need to do is have the ability to display large profile options like this in a horizontal format so the fields list left to right and continue on the next line. I am not sure where to edit to make this change specifically.

    I am using the child theme Frisco – Buddypress if that helps.

    Thanks in advance

    Thanks – that helps a bit I guess. I now understand why it’s there, but I’m not convinced it should be added to all fields by default. Perhaps there should be an option in the field setup screen.

    Thanks again for your help.

    @blackmatarsak,

    1) of course, you paste the code after a php closing tag. You also pasted the very first line of the code  which is only my comment.

    Remove the closing tag and comment the line with two // or remove it, and things will go better.

    Aside, theme’s functions.php use only a php opening tag, never a closing tag ( ?> )

    2) can be easily done. See on Codex, profile fields and how to create new profile fields. It’s made on dashboard > users >profile settings

    Basically, I need to create a sub-profile system that allows users to create a sub-profile for automobiles. These profiles will have content attached – like blogs, photos, videos, custom profile fields, status updates, etc. They need to be set up so other members can “like” them, follow them, subscribe to them, share them, comment on them, etc. They will be the basis for the site.

    I found this thread which touches on what I’m trying to do with my project:
    http://buddypress.org/support/topic/duplicate-group-components-multiple-group-types/

    The thread I linked to above talks about cloning the Groups plugin and modifying it so that essentially a Group becomes an Automobile. That makes sense in that Groups already has built in functionality to support much of what I need, including:

    – Ability for users to follow the vehicle (change members to followers)
    – A blog for the vehicle (using group blog)
    – Easy interface for users to manage their vehicles, I could quickly create admin pages for specifics (a page to specify capabilities, like range and speed, which would be used in the group listing page to filter vehicles)
    – If a vehicle were a race team project, multiple “owners” could be specified.
    – I could use a task management plugin for vehicles

    I was planning on contacting @fordp who posted in that thread but it doesn’t look like he’s accepting messages – or maybe it’s just my inexperience with BP, as I don’t see a way to contact him directly to message him like you do on conventional forum sites.

    I shared my project with Boone Gorges via email and he mentioned a simpler approach might be looking into “group types” – can’t find any info on that in the Plugins, Documentation, or Support Forums. Can someone help guide me in the right direction for that or explain what he might have been referring to?

    Just looking for some help here. I had originally planned to go with phpFox because it looked like I could achieve what I explained above with a few plugins and some modifications. I had a pretty good idea on how to get there. But the up front investment scares me, as well as the negative reviews of the codebase. And I’ve grown very tired of using vBulletin for my community sites over the years. I’d really like to make this work in Buddypress, just need some help figuring out how I might go about doing so in order to get started and have a clear picture of what it will take.

    @enej (This is the only place I could reach you) I am building an Intranet on WordPress I have read about using various plugins that I can use to get the job done. I am interested in customizing the dashboard to fit my needs visually and navigation wise. However I am having a hard time really putting my finger on a good plan to get an employee directory and a client directory established in the dashboard area. I read up on your plugin, “profile CCT” I was wondering if it was capable of functioning this way. Each directory should have an area (Maybe the left tab bar area on dashboard) where each employee or client has his/her own profile. The profiles will have custom fields; documents (Word Doc or PDF) will need to be uploaded to some of the fields. An expiration date alert will need to a feature for those document fields too. The alerts for those fields should be sent to the admin on expiration. Any suggestions?

    Ok so I managed to find a backwards way of doing it because I needed to be able to do the same thing. Your going to need two plugins.

    1. Your Preferred Role Management Plugin. I like Capacity Manager Enhanced
    2. Buddypress xProfiles ACL

    STEPS
    1. Use your role manager to create some new roles. Name them what ever you want.
    2. Go into the Users -> Profile Fields
    3. Create a Field Group for your Restricted Items (not the primary one).
    4. Go to the Settings -> xProfile ACL
    5. Put your Field Group that you only want the Admin to be able to edit for the admin only.
    6. Now this is important you need to modify the xProfile ACL php file (yes I know this makes it a hack, if xProfile ACL is updated you will lose this setting.)
    6a. Go to line 240 of the buddypress-xprofiles-acl.php file. Comment out lines 240 – 249, the code you are commenting out is:

    `
    function filter_xprofile_groups_with_acl() {
    global $bp, $profile_template, $current_user;
    get_currentuserinfo();
    foreach($profile_template->groups as $key => $profile_group) {
    if( ! in_array($profile_group->id, $this->user_allowed_xprofile_groups) ) {
    unset($profile_template->groups[$key]);
    }
    }
    }
    `

    6b. Below the code you just commented out add:
    ` function filter_xprofile_groups_with_acl() {}`

    7. Save your changes to the buddypress-xprofiles-acl.php file.

    8. Now when ever you need to modify the fields log in with your admin account navigate to the user profile in buddy press and select Edit Member Profile from the tool bar. You will see the fields from the private group. Users will see the fields but when they select edit they will not be displayed.

    Hope this helps.

    So I’ve been trying to add my own custom field types to buddypress – and so have downloaded and modified the Buddypress Xprofile Custom Fields Type plugin. I simplified the plugin a lot – removed loads of code and got it down to the bare minimum – then I started adding the new fields I wanted.

    Everything works great except one thing – the xprofile_filter_link_profile_data filter.

    I understand what the filter is doing – but I don’t understand why. Linkifying stuff is good – but why turn everything into member searches? For instance I added a regular text box to use as a bio field – but if a user enters less than 5 words it gets turned into a link. I don’t get it.

    I should note this is simply a query. I’ve disabled the filter and everything works as I would expect – but I want to make sure I am not removing functionality that is required for something I haven’t considered 🙂

    I have an odd issue. Every user that is registering is defaulting firstname and lastname to my name.

    The username for the user is correct but firstname and lastname are blank in their profile fields. If I manually edit their profile firstname lastname is blank. Once I insert the correct name in these fields the member directory updates correctly.

    Is there a default firstname lastname set somewhere? If so how would I change it?

    I am using wordpress 3.5.1 and Buddypress 1.6.5.

    you need to add more fields to either “base” (unless you have renamed “base”) or you can also add new groups and add the new fields there.
