    <?php xprofile_get_field_data( $field_name_or_id, $user_id ) ?>

    A great plugin would be a profile badge widget, anyone care to write that using the template tags?

    Hi,

    I want to be able to call certain fields from the authors profile, such as their Twitter name, and display them on a blog post. (i.e. “posted by Phil (@phil) on 9/17/09” where @phil is a link to their twitter profile, which is pulled from the BP profile).

    Is there a way to do this?

    I’m doing this right now using wpmu fields, but I can’t seem to find out what tag to call in BP to accomplish this.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Phil

    Me too! An privacy option is very important. This http://devbox.computec.de/2009/06/buddypress-xprofile-privacy-plugin/ does not work with 1.1 :-(

    Edit: it does work! But user must select before. But privacy fields like birthday etc. should never be visible for guest. Maybe with an click to activate, but at the moment thats not good.

    This is a little risky for a non-programmer, but here is some code that would replace the profile-loop.php file in the skeleton member theme. Note that this theme is deprecated in the new parent-child theme setup. It is also not a sophisticated privacy component like the one Jeff is working on. It simply omits everything except the base profile fieldset when a non-member views the profile.

    This is from my own installation, but I have removed some pieces (mostly formatting) to simplify things a bit. I haven’t tested it in the simplified form.

    It assumes that “Base” is the base profile group name you specified in the BP dashboard settings.

    <?php
    /*
    * /profile/profile-loop.php
    * This file loops through the profile field groups, and then each profile field to
    * display the profile information that a user has entered.
    *
    * Loaded by: 'profile/index.php' (via the xprofile_get_profile() template tag)
    */
    ?>
    <?php if ( bp_has_profile() ) : ?>

    <?php while ( bp_profile_groups() ) : bp_the_profile_group(); ?>

    <?php if ( (bp_get_the_profile_group_name() == "Base") || ( is_user_logged_in() ) ) : ?>
    <div class="info-group">

    <?php if ( bp_group_has_fields() ) : ?>

    <h4><?php bp_the_profile_group_name() ?></h4>

    <table class="profile-fields">
    <?php while ( bp_profile_fields() ) : bp_the_profile_field(); ?>

    <?php if ( bp_field_has_data() ) : ?>

    <tr<?php bp_field_css_class() ?>>
    <td class="label">
    <?php bp_the_profile_field_name() ?>
    </td>
    <td class="data">
    <?php bp_the_profile_field_value() ?>
    </td>
    </tr>

    <?php endif; ?>

    <?php endwhile; ?>
    </table>

    <?php else : ?>

    <h4><?php bp_the_profile_group_name() ?></h4>

    No info yet.

    <?php endif; ?>

    </div>

    <?php endif; ?>

    <?php endwhile; ?>

    <?php if ( !is_user_logged_in() ) : ?>
    <p class="not-a-member">You need to log in to see full member profiles.</p>
    <?php endif; ?>

    Many people have been inquiring about privacy options in BuddyPress. Some of you are aware that I am currently coding a Privacy Component for BuddyPress. I decided that it is time to fill the community in on my component, providing more details and a timeline.

    My Privacy Component will be entering a private alpha early next week. After the alpha phase is complete, it will then be available as a public Beta. If it goes well, and Andy likes it, it may be included in the BP core for version 1.2. If you look at the BP roadmap, you will see that that is when privacy filtering is scheduled to be included in core.

    In this screen capture of one of the privacy setting screens, you can see that there are actually six user classification filters that can be chosen for each BP object. The sixth option, “Relationship Mapped”, is made available by a separate plugin which I’ll be releasing later. The default Privacy Component will offer five levels.

    My current estimated release date for the first public beta is the week of October 5. This date may change depending on the feedback from the alpha phase.

    More Details

    This is taken from the Privacy Component’s current readme.txt file:

    BPAz is a privacy control component for BuddyPress that provides a site’s users a mechanism with which to control who has access to which pieces of their personal data.

    == Description ==

    The BuddyPress Authorization component (also referred to as BPAz, BP-Authz, or BuddyPress Privacy Component) is a BuddyPress component that allows users fine, granular control over who has access to which pieces of their personal data. It provides this service by hooking into BuddyPress’ core functionality, thereby giving users the ability to control (grant or deny) access to each piece, or grouping of, their personal data.

    The term “auth” is often used interchangeably for authentication or authorization. There is significant difference in meaning between them. Authentication is not authorization. Authorization is not authentication. Authentication must come before authorization. Authentication is handled by WPMU, initially by the registration process and subsequently by the login script. Authorization deals with verifying and managing the access rights a given authenticated user has to certain objects.

    Because of this confusion, the process of authentication is now often referred to as A1, or AuthN, or simply Au. The process of authorization is now often referred to as A2, or AuthZ, or simply Az. Since authentication must come before authorization, the A1-A2 ordinality of the terms is evident. This also explains the alternate names BPAz and BP-Authz.

    BPAz deals with authorization by verifying and managing access rights an authenticated user has to other’s objects–although a user may choose to expose their data to non-logged in users as well.

    The core BuddyPress objects on which rights can be set:

    • xprofile fields
    • activity stream actions
    • friends list
    • groups list
    • messaging
    • blogs
    • wire
    • status updates

    The basic access levels configurable per object (some objects offer only a subset of these rights):

    • allow/deny anyone (globally public or globally private). This is accomplished by setting an object’s viewing rights to either “All Users” or “Only Me”
    • allow only “Logged in Users” to view a given object
    • allow only friends to view a given object
    • allow only a specific list of users to view a given object. This is also called per user access control. This is accomplished by setting an object’s viewing rights to “These Users Only” and then entering a comma-separated list of usernames (a member’s login name) in a textbox that becomes visible.

    NOTE: Per relationship-type access control is possible if you use my BuddyPress Relationship Mapping plugin. For instance, allow by friend, colleague, partner, client, customer, fan, etcetera.

    Site Administration of BuddyPress User Privacy Tools

    Site administrators have ultimate control and oversight over the configuration of BPAz’s features and functionality via an additional administration panel under the BuddyPress menu hierarchy. The BuddyPress Privacy Component is enabled by default for all object groupings. However, Site Administrators can disable user-configurable sitewide privacy, or even individual privacy control objects, by using the Privacy Settings administration panel. As the Site Administrator, you will always be able to see each user’s complete content. Users do not have any options to hide content from Site Administrators.

    It’s weird, if I login from the top nav. bar I get the “No input file specified” error but if I view a profile and log in using the login-fields inside a profile, I can log in without problems.

    Is it just my buddybar which is messed up or is this a bug.

    #52475

    With BuddyPress1.1, you can also recreate a custom registration page to include only the fields you specifically want them to have on sign-up, put it in your child theme, and let it do the dirty work.

    Just don’t put the fields in the “base/first” profile field group. Only the fields in that group will show on the signup page.

    This code is to show group 3 (third tab) in the profile.

    <?php if ( bp_has_profile('user_id='.get_post_author_id().'&profile_group_id=3') ) : ?>
    <?php while ( bp_profile_groups() ) : bp_the_profile_group(); ?>
    <?php if ( bp_profile_group_has_fields() ) : ?>
    <?php while ( bp_profile_fields() ) : bp_the_profile_field(); ?>
    <?php if ( bp_field_has_data() ) : ?>
    <?php bp_the_profile_field_value() ?>
    <?php endif; ?>
    <?php endwhile; ?>
    <?php endif; ?>
    <?php endwhile; ?>
    <?php else: ?>
    <?php endif;?>

    In reply to: custom Profile-Fields

    In BP1.1 it would be easiest to make a custom theme file to do this inside the member-loop.php. You could check the field name and if it = the name of your field, then you can grab the next field, format it the way you want, and continue.

    What BP version are you using?

    within the Profile-fields, there are the drop-down-fields for Birthday (day, month, year) to be selected by the user. However, the set Birthday is not being saved – instead the date of TODAY appears.

    This is working fine at http://www.testbp.org, however it is not working at my installation. Could you please help to figure out what to do in order to make this work correctly ?

    Many thanks,

    Erich

    I want to customize the fields shown in user profiles. What files do I use to style the information?

    Also, is there a replacement for browsing page after page of user profiles or searching my user name? I know a version TBD may let users search various profile fields, but is there a workaround (plugin) that provides a better profile search function?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

    I’m new to buddypress. I’ve installed WordPress MU 2.8.1 myself and added buddypress 1.0.3 as a plugin and tried the WordPress MU + buddypress-package by buddypress.de several times (which includes the same components), but after the installation it’s alaways the same problem, there aren’t any profile fields.

    When I try to edit my profile it says “That group does not exist” and looks like this:

    http://amai.schildmaid.de/buddypress_forum_01.jpg

    In the backend it says under “Profile Fields Setup”, that I have no groups and when I try to add one “There was an error saving the group. Please try again”

    http://amai.schildmaid.de/buddypress_forum_02.jpg

    http://amai.schildmaid.de/buddypress_forum_03.jpg

    Is something wrong with my installation or do I not get how to do it?

    I’d appreciate some help, thanks a lot.

    Edit: I just saw there are more things not working: I can’t send messages or add freinds. Even though I can add new blogs they do not appear in the blog-list of a user. I found someone with similar problems here: http://buddypress.org/forums/topic/cannot-create-group-edit-profile-add-as-friend-or-post-to-wire

    That would be wp_users, but isn’t that ID used as a key (?) elsewhere in the database? Would it get “altered” automatically throughout the system?

    No, in WPMU DBs, changing the auto increment field, or any other linked field, does not automatically propagate the changes throughout. The technical term for what you are referring to is referential integrity, with the specific subset of that called cascading changes.

    With the MySQL engine, cascading changes (update or delete) throughout the DB only can occur if the tables in the DB have been set up as type InnoDB and the appropriate foreign keys applied. WPMU’s tables are set up as type MyISAM. Before assuming that this was/is a bad choice, when it comes to MySQL, there are pros and cons with each table type. A conscious decision went into selecting MyISAM table types for WPMU’s DB.

    Now, with regards to the specific issue you are facing:

    Although all the tables in WPMU’s DB have an ID field that is set to auto_increment, the ID field in wp_users is used to assign a unique ID to each registered member of your site. That ID field ties into the other tables in the DB, where necessary, by mapping to an appropriate field–but not to the auto incremented ID field of the other tables.

    So, for example, the wp_user ID field forms a relationship in the wp_bp_friends table in two places–with the initiator_user_id and friend_user_id fields. Or as a specific example, wp_user ID field = 7 would form a relationship with the field in wp_bp_xprofile_data where the value of its user_id field equaled 7.

    You are on the verge of potentially causing a very big, possibly fatal problem for your MySQL DB. Before doing anything, back up your DB and be prepared for the very-real possibility that you are going to alter the table relationships (break them) to such a point that your DB will not function anymore. You will then have to delete all the data in the DB tables and then restore the data from your backup.

    You might even find yourself in the position of having to actually delete the entire DB and creating a new one from scratch. You’ will then need to restore from the back up. So you should also make sure you have a copy of the DB settings in WPMU’s wp-config.php file as you will have to recreate the new DB exactly to match the settings found in that configuration file.

    Installed WPMU 2.8.3 on my local MAMP Apache 2.0.

    Installed Buddypress 1.0.3 and configured everything successfully.

    Moved the whole Installation on a lighttpd Server.

    Configured the rewrite rules as explained here http://blog.nix.is/lighttpd-rewrite-rules-for-wordpress

    The Blog and the Buddypress Urls work well… but:

    1. User-changes on their profile fields (even the standard name-field) were not saved!

    2. friend requests can’t be accepted (if you click on the accept-link you’re asked if you really want to do this. you can just go back then)

    On the my local Apache everything works!

    So it must be a lighty / lighttpd issue…

    Maybe a misconfiguration of lighty?

    Would i phpinfo() help?

    Please help.. no ideas how this could be resolved.

    I found a plugin that lets users change privacy setting in their profile. It has effect on the profile fields. Users can make their content viewable for themselves, friends or everyone. Here’s the link: http://devbox.computec.de/2009/06/buddypress-xprofile-privacy-plugin/

    What you need to do depends on what name is in question. Is it the member’s first, last, or nick name? Is it their full name which is displayed in the profile pane of BuddyPress? The data for those names are stored in two different places.

    Also I editted his name from admin dashboard, but the name does not change? Is this a bug?

    Since usernames (login names) cannot be changed, you must have tried changing either the first, last, or nick name. Did the questionable name even appear in any of those fields? Did you also select the newly-changed name in the “Display name publicly as” drop down list?

    But, based on what you are saying here, I assume that the questionable name is the member’s BuddyPress full name. This can only be changed in the profile pane by the user. Currently the only recourse a Site Admin has is to go into MySQL’s backend and find the questionable field in the wp_bp_xprofile_data table.

    Make sure that whatever changes you made to the user’s name in WPMU’s backend, you make in this table as well.

    Just to give you a little more background into what is happening:

    • When a user updates (changes) their name in the Full Name field in the BuddyPress profile pane, the changes do propagate throughout the MySQL DB. The datum in the following tables are properly updated: wp_bp_xprofile_data, wp_users, and wp_usermeta
    • But, if you make changes to a user’s nickname field in WPMU’s backend, the changes are written to wp_usermeta only for that field. The changes are not written to the wp_bp_xprofile_data or wp_users table. You can have the changes written to the wp_users table if you select the proper value from the “Display name publicly as” drop down list. But, they are never written to the corresponding BuddyPress table.
    • Finally, and this is even more confusing, changes to the nickname field are not written to the first name or last name meta values in the wp_usermeta table. Conversly, if you change the first name and/or last name fields, they are not combined and also written to the nickname field in wp_usermeta

    So, there could be improvements in the way WPMU handles user name changes. But, it is a WPMU issue since changes at the Site Admin level in the backend are controlled by WPMU and not BuddyPress.

    There are a number of new hooks and an array object that need to be available for the privacy component to function. Although the alpha versions may work with v1.1, the full-blown version is really targeted for v1.2 and will require that as a minimum.

    Concerning your wire post, for some reason, I believe that I never received that email. Strange, since I do have all my email notifications set to “Yes”.

    But, to answer that specific question, your direct calls to xprofile fields should still function properly. Since you are pulling your data directly from the table and not from a templatetag function, you should be fine. Now, if you want your direct calls to be subjected to privacy control, then that is a different matter. You would then need to pull your data after the fields array has been filtered.

    There is a separate table that gets installed that handles all privacy object settings. The privacy component filters the fields array that populates the profile page, removing any field-level elements that a given user chooses to hide from a given viewer category.

    I’m working on a BP setup that will require several fields when the user logs in.

    Is it possible to have the user automatically join a group based on a profile field entry? Eg: A user enters “Atlanta” for their city, can we automatically add them to a BP Group for people from Atlanta?

    If so, the next step is how to create a group for that city if there isn’t one already.

    Has anyone seen a plugin or code to this effect? I’ve searched but come up empty handed.
