In reply to: Username vs Real Name
Matthias
ParticipantThis “username / realname thing” is confusing my users, too.
At least the realname field in the registration page should be hidden by default. After registration, some users can show their realname if the want.
But this field should not set as required!!!Matthias

ParticipantThe po file you used initially contains errors or missing strings. This file is on glotpress and indicate it is 100% translated. Problem is, that Glotpres doesn’t control the syntax and 100% translated doesn’t mean working to 100%.
If you use this po file as work base, you have already 95% translated and probably some typo errors. poEdit handle this and shows you which strings are not “completed” or have “changed”. In this case, you have to validate the translation. Such difference are highlighted in a different color, so they’re easy to see.
It’s not automated, but a kind of.

ParticipantI was getting a lot of those entries before I got email registration activation working. turns out there was a conflict with another plugin and that’s why I was getting the invalid activation key error. Since I got that working I have not gotten any more spam signups but I’ll keep an eye out. I only have the live site – no local install.
I have another question about formatting profile pages – Mine look terrible. Maybe I did something along the way to break them. I have been working feverishly at this for days but I will start another thread for that new topic đ

ParticipantSeems to be spammers, but IMHO, there is another problem if you receive 2 mails for each new user.
Disallow user registration on live site and do some test on a local install before reoppening registry.
Change also your DB tables prefix. Don’t use wp_ ! This will calm down most spammers for a little while.

danbp
Participantmember_typee doesn’t handle roles or capabilities. It’s only (at the moment) a member filter which let you show them by the type they choosed.
BuddyPress doesn’t handle roles and use only thoose coming with WP.
WP Roles at Registration is outdated so it could be possible that he stopped to work with WP 4.+
Have you tested by using 2015 or 2013 theme ? Also deactivate all plugins except BP and WP Role

ParticipantHey danbp,
Ok, I’ve tested with removing a period and reloaded the page and I saw an error message show up saying something wrong with the line 112 or something and I corrected it and saved again to see an error message but I didn’t see any errors..
â Sorry, i donât use MAMP so i canât give you any advice how to use it. – I think everything is functioning properly and setup properly.. unless there someone here who has tips on Mamp =)
â If you can register a user from the dashboard, i guess the registration is working. Can you also change a password from there ? Tought the problem is elswhere. – Yes, I can change the user’s password in the dashboard.
Is mod_rewrite enabled on the server ? See your htaccess and httpd.conf in apache. Just in case of. – Yes, mod_rewrite is enabled in httpd.conf but I don’t see any .htaccess in apache nor my root folder for the website.. should I make one?
Now the unknown part: when you register a new user and enter a password and save, you say the page refresh and password is not showing. OK. But do you have a message telling about a missing data ? – I’ve pressed the sign up button without inputting any password but it doesn’t give me any errors.. maybe this is a clue!?!? fingers crossed!
GO to DB and check the wp_user table. Look about this new user and see if a hashed password is in the table. See also wp_signup table. – The user I made in the dashboard, yes, it has the password field filled in and has the activation key filled too. I only see admin (original me) and this test user nobody else here. Also, when I go into wp_signup table, it’s empty.
Also, do you use a single or a multisite install ? – It’s single.
Last but not least, did you allowed user registering ? (wp-admin/options-general.php â checkbox just after the site admin email) – Yes, everyone can register is checked in the settings.

Participant– Where should I look for? Nowhere. If you have an error, you will see it on the screen. But you can test this anyway. Remove a dot or another sign in one of BP’s file and you will be fixed very quickly ! đ

IHaveToDoThis
ParticipantHey,
I’m pretty new to BP myself, started my site about two weeks ago. I use the Absolute Privacy plugin. You can lockdown the complete site or include a members area. What’s great about this plugin is that you can put the page ID of pages that you still want to visible to logged out users. So, for example, while logged out my users can still access the registration page, our about page, a history page and our terms and service. Other than that all other pages clicked on send them to the login page or whichever page you designate.
Important note: You need a plugin that will show you the page ID numbers for your pages. There’s someway to find it on WP but no one on the forums explained it in a way I could understand. I use Reveal IDs. Really simple install and the IDs show up right on your pages panel. Overall the Absolute Privacy plugin was worth the double download.
I hope this helps. If not, I think I have the names of some the other plugins I used but didn’t work for me. Maybe they might for you. Anyways, good luck!

Participantthen added that to the buddypress pages
@seph
Make sure that you didn’t add the Register link under any of the main BP component pages (e.g. Members, Groups, Blogs, Activity) in the menu links.
Make sure that you didn’t add any text in your “Register” page so that BP can automagically add the Registration Form and the first group of the Profile fields in thepage.
Make sure that you’re not logged in when you go to the Register page.March 21, 2015 at 10:10 pm #236361In reply to: I just can't get registration to work

Participantif you delete everything, fresh install – and use the default wp theme 2012 or 2013 or something – you should be able to get the registration thing to work right? I would do that first.

ParticipantI have the plugin “Buddypress Members Only” and the redirect is just the full link to the registration page “http://www.websitename.com” and I have Buddypress Page settings set as Registration page the same link as previously mentioned – but when you try to access the locked page unless registered it removes the “www.” hence the constant registration loop

ParticipantI found an issue, when the page redirects to the create an account section it removes “www.” and just has websitename.com – but when I add in http://www.websitename.com the registration works fine.
How do I fix this?

ParticipantHi @henrywright
I have a quick question. I have included the code from the buddypress registration.php file into a custom page template in my child theme, however it isn’t working as it does within buddypress. Do I need to do something else within my custom template for the buddypress code to work?
I tried
global $bp
as I thought this would work, but nope.March 19, 2015 at 8:23 pm #236256In reply to: Multiple Registration Forms?
ch1n3s3b0y
ParticipantI’m looking for something similar, however I want completely separate forms. I can see how to edit the registration page to only show the fields I need as I customised this to my requirements already. My problem is that I want multiple pages with separate forms on them as this would allow me to code them differently to my needs. When I have put the BP registration form code into a custom wordpress page template, this doesn’t display the form fields as it clearly isn’t recognising the BP specific code within the template.
I’m unsure of where to go with this.
Edit: I can get the form to show up now, but when I submit the form, it just reloads the page without registering the new user.

ModeratorIf you’re using BP 2.2 +, you should use this approach instead:
My cpts appear.
However, comments on them do not appear in the activity stream.Perhaps because I didn’t create a component for those cpts – I hope that is not the case.
Hopefully this ticket will provide an answer.March 18, 2015 at 3:02 pm #236204In reply to: Users are Automatically Activated

Participant@RussAdams What theme are you using? I haven’t figured out a solution to this problem yet so I had to turn off new member registration and created a Gravity Forms form for new users instead. Will have to manually register each user but my community is rather small so that shouldn’t be a huge problem. Will continue to search for a solution though.

Participant@danbp True indeed, but with my previous setup with BuddyPress 1.9.2 I was able to control the spam registrations since they were never activated (I used BuddyPress Pending Activations to manually activate new users) and therefore they could never log in. They were not seen in the activity stream either.
This is my setup: https://buddypress.org/support/topic/create-private-membership-site-with-buddypress/
I’ve now upgraded s2Member which had no effect, and also deactivated the BuddyPress Automatic Friends plugin which didn’t have any effect either. The new user shows up as pending in the Users screen for about 1 minute after registration, but is then automatically activated.

ParticipantSpam is an endless plague… and there is no radical solution, but only a set of combination for minimizing it, or at least to slow down that phenomenon..
For example, changing the default wp_ table prefix is a good practice which i would recommand to any site owner touched (or not yet) by spammers.
Even if you already use another prefix, but spammers found your site, you have to modify it again. Sounds a bit stupid, but the gain will be effective for a while.
Other tips are avaible on WP Codex.
In some case, you would prefer to use a plugin. See BuddyPress Registration Option.
But in any case, you have to found your own combination.

ParticipantDo you recommend I create text/content and install a form plug-in for my âregisterâ page associated with the BPress first before working on adding Member Profile Fields?
@dleit please do not install any form plugin for your “Register” page. Leave it blank as BuddyPress will dynamically add the necessary forms. What you need to do is set up the profile fields. Remember that whatever field you add in the first group of the profile field will appear on the right side of the Reigstration form.It just doesnât seem like it will solve the âuser registration is currently not allowedâ issue.
After you add the member profile fields/group(s) you want for your community, I suggest going to the admin menu Settings > General and Allow Registrations. BP Codex is your friend https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/register-and-activation-pages/

It just doesn’t seem like it will solve the “user registration is currently not allowed” issue. Thank you for the link there on adding Member Profile Fields (I feel confident in doing that). It just dawned on me that my site should look like this in some ways because the BPress is in use.

I downloaded Joomla to check out how things are as EasySocial will not run without it.
The initial experience is Joomla is as primitive compared to WP as is BP to Easysocial out-of-the-box. I installed with some default data options but settings and configs are too complex.
Maybe it works better for Joomla users but to me
– no default registration box so that users can sign up and comment (its there ..way hidden)
– no default out-of-the-box commenting ??
– what are the differences between plugins and modules?
– Last but not the least, how can I enable Joomla so that users can come to my site and have their own blogs with own themes, covers and own side-bars with own ability for comment moderation on their individual blogs? Thanks.

ModeratorHey @aires4411
This may not be what you want, but have you thought about changing the name and slug of the registration page via WP admin > Pages? That will let you ‘move’ the registration page.

ParticipantI am also seeing the @mentions not working on my site.
BuddyPress 2.2.1 running on the Engine theme from Industrial Themes. Theme and WP both at latest versions.
Plugins (but I can’t see where any would cause a conflict):
Anti-spam by CleanTalk
Custom Login
Custom Permalinks
Gravity Forms (and PayPal and User Registration add-ons)
MailChimp Lite
Updraft
Use Google Libraries (maybe it’s that one?)
YoastAnd some admin plugins.
