Topic: Is BuddyPress for me?
Hi everyone,
I am the registered owner of the domain Links.com.
For some time, I have been looking for some good community software that I can run on it, but I have rejected everything I have come across, because of on-going maintenance issues, both with the software and the community comments.
Before, I consider the subject matter, I want to make sure that I will not have major headaches that will interrupt by rather quiet retirement. So I have two basic questions:
1) How good is BuddyPress right now at quashing spam comments and links. It is imperative, that I keep this to zero, just as I have on my WordPress blog that exists on my site at this time. Right now, on WP, I am using Akismet and WP-Spam, as well as moderation on any comment that contains a link.
2) Are there developers available that can enhance spam protection for me. I would like to include plugins that will eat any post that contains blacklisted words, compare any links in a post to the urls that appear in the Google Safe Browsing API database (I have working PHP code that does this for another app I developed), and also compare and reject any post that has links on the urlblacklist.com database or comparable (I also have working code for this).
If I can be comfortable that I will not have to go around with a fly swatter deleting nasty posts and comments, I think I can go ahead and look over the software further.
Thanks for the help.
Rich
After upgrading from 1.0. to 1.0.1my Swedish translation was gone (http://skolbloggen.se). I thought maybe “Selected English – Save – Select Swedish – Save” would help, but still English all over the site.
After some investigation I found that /wp-content/buddypress/bp-languages/ were missing, so I created /buddypress/bp-languages/ and uploaded Swedish (http://codex.buddypress.org/translations/swedish-svenska-sv_se/) and switched between English/Swedish in admin-panel, still with no result. What am I missing?
Ps: Deleted my first SPAM-blog today (protected signup page with reCAPTCHA wasnt enough), active guy this “zhanglingjuan115”; http://www.google.se/search?q=zhanglingjuan115&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:sv-SE:official&client=firefox-a
Since begin may, i blocked 2times zhanglingjuan115 as spammer on buddypress-fr.net/bpdemo
Google it and you will see that this name appears on many wp sites.
Does anybody know more about this chinese poster and how to avoid it definetely ?
Thanks and take care.
First of all, thanks as always to the amazing support system around the WordPress family!! You guys are great and I wouldn’t have gotten THIS far without the generous support and multitude of resources on blogs and on this forum. I’m posting after doing many searches and not finding a fix that applies. (Granted, I ain’t all that techie and I may be missing something totally obvious!)
Here’s my site: http://www.openadoptionsupport.com
I’m running WPMU 2.7.1 and I’ve installed it in the root of my domain at BlueHost. This is a clean, manual (not simplescripts) install and WPMU was working fine when I carefully added BuddyPress and then linked it to BBPress. These are the plugins I have activated (besides BuddyPress):
Sitewide:
Limit Blogs per User 1.0
FV Community News 1.3.1
NoSpamUser 0.7.2
Not Sitewide:
Akismet 2.2.3
Contact Form 7 1.10
Page Links To 1.8
Subscribe To Comments 2.1.2
I’m using the default theme.
It’s been a rocky start but stuff is working for the most part now. However I can’t add friends. When I click “add” I don’t get any kind of ajax — I just get shot right to my own profile. So say I’m logged in as Dawn and want to friend myself as Admin (I’ve got Admin open in Firefox and Dawn open in Opera), I’ll click the “add friend” by Admin and get shot right to my Dawn profile.
When I try to message by clicking “send a message” or by replying to a sent message, everything seems like it’s working but then when I hit send, I end up back at the “compose” page with empty fields. If I send a message from there by manually inputting the addressee (“admin”) it’ll work. Admin will get the message and (eventually) an email notification.
Finally if I add something to the wire in a group and choose “notify members by mail” nothing shows up by mail.
Error Logs (note: I have some other issues going on and some of these errors may be unrelated to this or they may all be one and the same — just trying not to throw EVERYTHING into one thread but I did up my php.ini memory to 128mb):

Now that we’ve got the buddypress up and running we’re putting together materials to add to its social features and one of the things we’d like to do is add a section for our users to upload and download files.
This is a private server so we will not have to worry about spam.
Our users would be uploading files like word documents, pdf’s and ppts – mainly filled with resources for each other to pull information from.
I was thinking about setting up a page within the site and using asp.net or something but I’m not sure exactly what would be the best method.
Anyone have any suggestions on where I can read more about this?
I am researching various security functions and plugins for use with my buddypress sites. I realize that some security issues have to do with the webhost, but I’d still like to take sensible and (in some cases) heightened precautions.
So I’ve started this thread to allow everyone to share their favorite security plugins/tools/code snippets or testing programs with the community.
Plugins
-WPMU Signup Captcha
-WP-Security
-Limit login attempts
-Members only
I’ve also heard good things about WP-Spamfree.
Thanks!
