MemberI keep trying to select the Buddypress default theme and it says settings saved but the page then reverts back to showing the Network Parent Theme 1.1 as the default one. Is this correct?

ParticipantI can answer my own question by now..When I was struggling to get the new themes going I moved an empty bp-thems folder back to its original location.
This was causing buddypress to look for the old theme setu which was not there..
Hoppe this is of any help for others

Participantim having major issues with this unfortunatly, when i upload an image it does show up, but the quality is much lower then the original file quality, plus the image is too small to crop properly.
i suggest my users using Gravatar right now, but i want to give them the oppertunity to just upload an avatar.
here’s a screengrab: http://twitpic.com/ju16r
this is when a user uploaded a picture.
i think for some reason the crop function is not working properly.
is there a solution for this?
cheers,
aron
ps: i changed my theme, if it’s a CSS error which tags in what file should i change to get this to work? i’ve changed the standard BP theme

ParticipantYou are either using an outdated 3rd-party plugin, a outdated custom theme, or need to update your own custom code to v1.1. The function get_edit_html() has been deprecated.
If you are using a 3rd-party plugin or theme, you should contact the developer and ask when they plan on updating it. If it happens to be the old, xprofile privacy plugin (which depended on that function and a core hack to work), then please read this thread.

ParticipantThis plugin is not (yet) adapted to 1.1, anyway he can work a bit…
Move the “album” folder from bp-themes/album to /themes/bp-sn-parent/album
This will show your picture. i didn’t trying something for the picture wire, but i presume there is a path to modify somewhere.

Participant3) Backup, backup, and backup. Try it, if not working, then return it back.
4) I don’t think there’re posts on the forums. BuddyPress doesn’t have theme options as in other themes. You have to edit it. Use Firefox/Firebug to find what to edit.

KeymasterUltimately this is a theme design decision and you can customise it yourself in a child-theme.

ParticipantThanks, Andy. I will try fiddling with this when I have more time. The permissions looked OK, I did think of that–but maybe I’m not looking carefully. The blogs.dir/1/files/avatars/ should be writeable by the webserver, right? (there are over 1000 subdirectories in there–one for each user, I assume?)
But the really troubling thing was the browser crashes. Those were hard to accept.
This is really a big upgrade, I can see–change in the way themes work, avatars, forums. My own fault for trying to push it right away on a live install.
For now I’ve dropped back to 1.0–I have 200 students coming in on Sunday to start playing with the system. Best to play it safe until that’s over with.

KeymasterThe first is correct, once you activate the bp-default theme you will no longer see this warning message, it is simply for backwards compatibility. Make sure you do not have a /wp-content/bp-themes/ directory.

ParticipantYou will need to upgrade your themes also… Are you using the bp-sn-parent and bp-default themes?
I think so. They show up in my in WPMU –> BuddyPress –> General Settings as
BuddyPress Default (1.1-rc)
BuddyPress Social Network Parent Theme (1.1-rc)
BuddyPress Default Member Theme (1.1-rc)
I’m currently using the parent theme.
Also when I try to install bbPress by going to http://domain.com/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-forums/bbpress/ as indicated in http://domain.com/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-forums/installation-readme.txt nothing shows up. Is this part of the problem?

colinloretz
ParticipantFixed this issue. Use the Functions.php file inside of /bp-themes/deprecated/bphome in the 1.1rc branch.
Because I intend to move to 1.1 with a parent-child theme, I’ve been liberal in changing the bp core files to make it work with my deprecated theme as a temporary fix but there are two issues with 1.1 and old themes that I ran into.
Registration:
There is a function called ‘get_edit_html’ that is deprecated from the BP_XProfile_Field class. (it still exists in a deprecated class extension but it’s having a hard time finding it). I simply moved it back into the BP_XProfile_Field Class and everything works again.
Activation:
Even with the functions.php file correct, it fails to find the activation page because it tries to use the new activation screen from 1.1. You need to add the following to LINE 9 of bp-core/bp-core-activation.php. This will check if you’re using a legacy theme and then default to looking for the activate.php in your bphome theme.
if ( file_exists( WP_CONTENT_DIR . '/bp-themes' ) )
return false;My next steps:
These issues and changes to the core only apply to deprecated themes. I will do a fresh BP install of 1.1 when we are ready for the parent-child theme.
Site launch in t-minus….4 days!

Participant#3 is resolved. Jeff nailed it!
#1-2
Since I have customized BP quite a lot (no admin bar, so all the links are in the individual pages etc.) I’m quite scared of upgrading to 1.1. Will an upgrade to 1.1 only overwrite my changes to the “core” files in plugins/buddypress? It wont affect anything in bp-themes/mytheme correct? Can I backup plugins/buddypress and then restore it if 1.1 completely messes up my installation?
#4 Can you give me pointers? Couldn’t find any past posts dealing with this issue. Any global configs? This feature is going to keep away a lot of users from actively participating unless I find a way to disable it.
Thanks again for all the answers. Much appreciated.

Participant1) What is “Activate avatar” e-mail? I’ve never heard it nor seen it on any of my bp installs so far.
2) maybe you need to reinstall buddypress. Or use 1.1 rc for better usability.
3) Global configuration option to enable/disable self user account deletion is introduced from 1.1. Are you sure you are running 1.0.3, as it doesn’t even offer you such option. Users can just click to delete.
4) You can simply delete those functions from theme files, or maybe better hack available. Check for sticky posts.

ParticipantHi Mike, I guess that was pesky me, wanting a 3-col layout
I’ve been making some minor mods and it’s looking good so far. I did notice that IE doesn’t display the left column of the front page properly, any ideas what I could do to fix that? (the site is http://squidlog.net).
Thanks much.

InactiveThanks Andy, I just wanted to clarify that instead of integrating the Atahualpa theme with BP I decided to keep them separate for the time being and install Buddypress on a different blog within the same WPMU install. This way the two do not conflict and I can use the new BP theme architecture without tinkering with the source files. I will create CSS styles for Buddypress to match my web site’s look, but that should be pretty straightforward. Atahualpa offers significant customization capabilities (e.g. creating your own widget areas, split columns, etc) and I wanted to keep them until BP has similar features.
This setup actually works except a few minor issues with BP member and group widgets that I wanted to use on my main (non-BP) blog. The issues weren’t there in 1.0.3 – hopefully they can be fixed at some point.
I am liking my Buddypress-powered portal more and more

KeymasterIf you can help it, and you are comfortable porting your theme over (eventually maybe?) then I would suggest it, yes. Estimated release for 1.1 is September 30, so it’s only a few days away.

KeymasterUsing an existing WordPress theme will require work on your part. WordPress themes are designed for blogs, not for all the extra features that BuddyPress offers. You will be able to integrate the header and footer and overall look and feel, but specific features will still need CSS styles.

Inactivejust wanted to share the status of this.
I tried both mrmail’s and Detective’s approaches and got a partial success. My main blog looks as it used to, but the BP pages are not styled properly (I guess it’s because both Atahualpa and BP have different widget areas). The 997 patch did not help much unfortunately.
In the end I decided to run BP on a different blog and keep my main blog on Atahualpa. This setup does work style-wise, but there are a couple of bugs to fix in the core members and group widgets. I entered them in Trac (https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/1116)

KeymasterIt’s fairly simple. If you don’t like an aspect of the default theme, edit it. The new theme architecture in BP 1.1 makes this easier than ever. I suspect over the remainder of the year we’ll see more BP themes being released.
If aren’t familar with how WordPress themes work, there are lots of documentation online and there are always people you can hire to create one for you.
All of this has been discussed on this site many times before.

ParticipantI kinda think this looks weird/bad too, I love the standard way of communities too just focus on what you just clicked. I’ve been trying to find a solution to get rid of those 3 columns. But nothing so far.
I did saw a site a few weeks ago that looked like facebook while being build on buddypress. Would be nice if buddypress changes to this or at least provides an option to do this.
Edit: I found something great, http://3oneseven.com/08/bruce/. These buddypress themes are exactly what I’m looking for. I can’t test them right now, but if they work with the newest buddypress then this would be a solution for me.

ParticipantAlright, to clarify:
- I have all plugins disabled except Buddypress, including bp-custom.php
- I have deleted any MU plugins
- I have the themes that come with buddypress enabled
I indeed have Buddypress down to the way it comes out of the box. I have even deleted all the Buddypress files, and uploaded Buddypress again from a fresh download
Unfortunately, I am not sure about errors on the server’s log files, I don’t have access to that at the moment.
But the way I see it, I have it narrowed down to two possibilities:
- It is because I have wordpress (not MU) installed at the root http://gregeland.com/ and Buddypress installed at http://gregeland.com/projects/badmintonlife/
- There is some value in the database that I cannot find that is causing this
I am leaning towards #1, but I can’t think of any real reason why it would behave like that.
