You’re talking about separating your WordPress blog from BuddyPress?
If you’re using WPMU, you can do this:
https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/install-buddypress-on-a-secondary-blog/
My website has a theme that works well in wordpress but it works well in buddypress. So I wanted to leave my home in the theme and buddypress leave the default theme, is to do this with or without the help of a plugin?
For reference.
BuddyPress Roadmap
Role Scoper plugin mentioned by @pcwriter
Members plugin mentioned by @Bpisimone
Like @Anointed mentioned, existing communities not running BP will never switch over to BP until there’s a solution like the one mentioned above. I would call this an issue that is preventing BP from spreading to larger existing communities.
Believe me, if I could code PHP then I would have already created this plugin months ago. Unfortunately I can’t. I’m still learning PHP as we speak but I have nowhere near the skill level required for this. Is there anyone here that feels they can do that and is willing to do so?
I have Buddypress 1.2.3 running on a brand new installation of WordPress 2.9.2 at http://www.FarmvilleMad.com – I want the site index to display the activity feed as it does on the Buddypress demo website at http://testbp.org, and have the blog on a seporate tab, also like the NEWS tab at the testbp.org demo site.
How do I go about doing this? I have browsed the forums for a resolution but can’t seem to find one.
Thank you in advance to anyone who can assist me, it’d be greatly appreciated!!
Thank you.
On the roadmap for post-1.3, the team is going to look at WordPress user roles with a view to integrating them.
@warut
Once you’ve done what Bowe has said.
You will need to know how to use SVN or you can use a SVN client.
If you’re using Windows, TortoiseSVN is the most popular SVN program..
Here’s a nice tutorial for Tortoise:

Hey,
I’ve installed Buddypress (1.2.3) and WordPress (2.9.2) and everything works fine. Thanks!
But I dropped the widget in the sidebar which should display who’s online. But it doesn’t work. It shows nobody.
What is the problem?
Please help! Thanks in advance!
Greetings
You should have a WordPress account and then go to:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/add/
Submit your plugin, and it will get added to the repository after it has been approved.. this will take a short while
@beeza
Did you create a directory ‘bb-attachments’ one level above your WP root as per the instructions here?
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/forum-attachments-for-buddypress/installation/
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/forum-attachments-for-buddypress/ – you can upload different file types … images, swf, etc.
edit- depends on what kind of attachment site admin allows, of course.
WordPress Version 2.9.2
BuddyPress Version 1.2.3
BBpress Version 1.0.2
My Set up:
I have BBpress forums & BuddyPress
http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/2127/wpbbbbp1.jpg
http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/1755/wpbbbbp2.jpg
This might also be a great solution here: http://justintadlock.com/archives/2009/09/17/members-wordpress-plugin
I think it’s easily extensible, for example gravity forms uses it’s power:
Role Management Integration
Gravity Forms is compatible with Justin Tadlock’s Members plugin for role management. Have granular control over what users can and can’t do within Gravity Forms.
I agree there is a need for a user role just under Site Admin.
I don’t think the BP team needs to address it though. I also think it should be plugin based.
User roles internal to WordPress are due for an overhaul, but it’s been pushed back a bit.
You could sort of tackle this via the Menus plugin for MU. That’d be a bit kludgey though.
testbp now runs regular WordPress, not MU, which is why that has “disappeared.”
images and avatar has vanished from my site under IE and chrome.
this has happen on the last upgrade, so ive try to downgrade buddypress but dindnt sovled the issue of avatar and images
example page
http://webfeminin.com/a-propo/
WordPress MU 2.9.2
Buddypress Version 1.2.1
Plugin activate:
Google XML Sitemaps
Hyper Cache
Smart Youtube
Post Avatar
Unfiltered MU (on some blogs only)
WordPress.com Stats
the avatar has vanished from my site too with the new version.
i dont have Settings -> Miscellaneous Settings in my wordpress MU version:(
Is there a way to access bp_blogs_get_latest_posts() and possibly other buddypress functions from outside buddypress’s core? I’d like to access that function for both widgets and wordpress templates but I get function undefined when I place it in the code and when It ry to include the php file it’s defined in everything in the theme that’s below the include breaks.
edit: I just realized the function does not exist in the bp-blogs.php file even tough this link says it’s there: http://bp-dev.org/phpxref/nav.html?_functions/index.html
Thanks Ray:) You’re right I rarely do come in here as all I ever hear is problems, lol:)
@heathj85 – Make sure you installed it correctly. Meaning that there was a bp-chat/config/bp-chat-config.php file created and it’s contents are right. If not you would get this error as well. But few people do. Although reasons you might get it are:
1. You don’t allow table creation for the wordpress user/password in wp-config
2. You didn’t chmod 777 the config directory on install
3. Your information in bp-chat-config.php is wrong or not present.
Hope that helps.
Thanks,
Dave
The only one I found is: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-like/
It only does “thumbs up” (like) but no “thumbs down” but does work with the activity stream.

I use BlueHost. Your friend was talking about the WPMU + BP installation via SimpleScripts (kind of like Fantastico de Luxe, but much more responsive to upgrades).
SimpleScripts calls it “BuddyPress”, but it is really BP + WPMU.
I used SimpleScripts to do my initial BP + WPMU installation. I had a complete site failure yesterday when I upgraded to the most recent BP version. I also had some bugs creating user blogs with the original installation.
I think SimpleScripts automatically configures WPMU to create user blogs as subdomains. For this to work, your hosting provider MUST support “wildcarding”. When opened a support ticket with BlueHost to do this, they quickly replied: “No our system does not support wildcarding.”
If you were creating your own blogs as subdomains, this would not be a problem because you could use the DNS tool (e.g. cPanel > Simple DNS Zone Editor) to support define each one when you create it. But, it seems likely you’re using WPMU to support multiple users. In that case, it would be nearly impossible to define a new subdomain each time your users created a new blog. The wildcard gets you out of that predicament by immediately supporting any subdomain when they create the blog.
If you install WPMU + BP manually, you don’t need a hosting provider that supports wildcarding. During the configuration, just select the option to create user blogs as *subdirectories* instead of subdomains.
I did the manual installation for the first time today. I don’t think I’ll need the SimpleScripts approach again.
Hope this helps.
@MrMaz I’ve got some good news for you. While I still can’t get the avatars to work via the thumbnail chooser, I have gotten avatars to work on a single wordpress install when choosing to “Customize” the link’s avatar. In my case it can crop the image and upload the thumbnail and fullsize pic to /wp-content/uploads/link-avatars/
In case this helps anyone else… I had to use the “Full URL path” in wordpress’ Settings > Miscellaneous to get BuddyPress user avatars to upload (in case someone wants to use a different avatar than their Gravatar)
Full URL path example: http://www.mysite.com/wp-content/uploads
