    To recap:

    PREVIOUS ENVIRONMENT:

BlueHost hosting, WordPress MU + BuddyPress 1.2.2.1 installed via SimpleScripts and automatic upgrades. Also had WordPress in a root directory.

    PROBLEM:

After upgrading to BuddyPress 1.2.3, clicking the tabs for Activity, Members, Groups, Blogs, About generated an Internal Server Error.

    SOLUTION:

Removed the WordPress installation from the root web directory.

Deleted the directory containing the WordPress MU + BuddyPress.

    Deleted the previous databases.

Create a database and database user.

    Manually install WordPress MU (WPMU)

    Manually install BuddyPress.

    TIPS:

If you have questions along the way, start with the links provided by the WPMU installation page (on your website) and search the WordPress MU and BuddyPress support forums. I also recommend the free ebook, Installing WordPress MU For Beginners, by Andrea Rennick, available at http://wpmututorials.com/wp-content/plugins/download-monitor/download.php?id=1

Use cPanel > MySQL Databases to create the database, create the user with ALL privileges, and assign the user to the database. Avoid using the “MySQL Database Wizard” tool. I got connection errors when I used the wizard.

I have an open request to my web hosting provider, BlueHost, to enable wildcard subdomains for my domain. (I elected to have new blogs appear as subdomains.) You can avoid this hassle if you opt to create user blogs as subdirectories.

After trying several variations, I completed an WordPress MU installation.

Here’s a tip for anyone else using cPanel, use “MySQL Databases” instead of “MySQL Database Wizard” to:

    1. Create a new database.

    2. Create a new user with ALL privileges.

    3. Add the user to the database.

Without an application platform like Facebook / MySpace, (i.e. full opensocial container support), BuddyPress sites will always have a severe handicap. iPhone isn’t popular just because it’s a good phone – iPhone is popular because of the app support. WordPress gives us a platform with some terrific plugins, but WordPress plugins aren’t social by nature. OpenSocial apps are. And that makes all the difference.

I have a brand new installation of WordPress 2.9.2 running at http://www.FarmvilleMad.com, with a new installation of BuddyPress 1.2.3.

    I want:

    * The activity feed to be displayed when first accessing the site, rather than the 404 I have now or the latest blog entries.

    * A seporate tab along the top for blog entries, like the NEWS tab on the BuddyPress demo site at http://testbp.org.

    * Member profiles to work, as for some reason they aren’t. Example: http://www.farmvillemad.com/members/Farmville%20Mad/ takes you to the site index, rather than the user profile.

Can anyone advise on how I go about achieving this? :) I’ve had a look around the threads here already but can’t seem to find any answers.

I had this same problem with BlueHost… the plugin here….

    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/mail-from/

…completely fixed the issue of no emails being sent once BP was installed.

    Thanks ruthlessbookie!

I am building a highscores for a plugin I am developing. Right now I am using the get_col() wordpress function to get the data, but I also need to get other columns at the same time. I am not sure how to do this. I was thinking I could create a multi-dimensional array and use multiple get_col() function calls and just combine the data and stick it into the multi-dimensional array…I honestly have no idea on the syntax for this… can I use the built in php function push? If so how do I only add onto one portion of the array… is it like $array[ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] how do i only add onto only one bracket thing(sorry don’t know the word lol)

After looking into this in more detail I discovered the problem is caused by a potential hosting compatibility issue with BuddyPress.

As soon as I turned off the BuddyPress plugin WordPress was able to send out emails again.

I installed BuddyPress on a WordPress install on a different server with a different hosting company and it worked fine. BuddyPress didn’t stop emails being sent out from that hosting account.

The compatibility issue is with BlueHost.com where BuddyPress prevents emails being sent out. They use cPanel whereas the other hosting company where BuddyPress works doesn’t.

Hey guys, I’m currently murdering a version of the theme unplugged for buddypress, personally I like what I’m seeing, you be the judge, lwees.com. I have removed the navigation bar that appears on top of the site (I know I should know th damn name by now), but I would like to keep the notifications feature somewhere else.

I know how to play with the coding to get it done but I would like ideas about where to do this, I was planning to do it in the sidebar just bellow the avatar of a logged in user but I’m unsure if that will break any functionality. Any ideas are extremely welcome.

I’m using the latest of everything, WordPress MU, BuddyPress, and Latest Plugins. Thanks, Bye.

I guess there are no experienced BP plugin authors because BP hasn’t been around for a long time.

It’s important to get this topic out there and the frequently used plugins fixed quickly. Otherwise people will have strange feelings every time an update for BuddyPress comes out. That hurts BuddyPress.

(I don’t understand though: is there really no way to take care of “white screens” from the other side – from WordPress side? Like a try…catch fatal error thing which would deactivate the plugin causing the error?)

I’ve just installed a brand new WordPress on my site.

I had set it up so anyone can register.

Here’s a screenshot that shows the general settings used…

    http://img.skitch.com/20100327-fhpat1hdaawwqyf11ykisdeimf.jpg

I tested this with a new registration.

The email to give me my password was sent to me. The admin was also sent an email telling me that someone had signed up.

    So far so good.

Then I installed BuddyPress 1.2.3 (the newest version).

No other plugins were installed. Everything was fresh out of the box.

I activated the BP theme, I changed the permalink structure to /%postname%/.

Everything was now installed and looked fine.

Here’s a screenshot that shows the BuddyPress general settings page…

    http://img.skitch.com/20100327-pm3at1uic66hpugante7axfas6.jpg

Now I began testing it by creating a new membership account.

When I create a new test account no email is sent with my confirmation email link. The admin did not receive any emails either. I created several test accounts using different email addresses on different servers.

So it seems like BuddyPress is preventing emails from being sent out.

Does anyone have a solution to this?

    Many thanks!

    Based on this topic.

Plugin Authors — If your plugin does not appear in the “Confirmed Update Friendly” PLEASE UPDATE IT ASAP. It’s really important as your plugins are crashing/have the potential to crash user’s WordPress installations when BuddyPress is updated. This reflects poorly on the project, even though BP is not the problem.

This will take you less than 5 minutes to do if you create a loader.php file and add the code in the link below, then just include your existing main plugin file when BuddyPress has loaded.

    http://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/checking-buddypress-is-active/

    Not Update Friendly (crashes site):

Any plugins in this list that have not been updated for 1.2 will be removed from http://buddypress.org/extend/plugins/.

    • BuddyPress Events Calendar
    • bpPicture Album
    • BuddyPress AJAX Chat
    • BP-TagBox
    • Twire / Twitter to Wire
    • Auto Group Join
    • Achievements
    • BuddyPress Stats
    • CD BuddyBar Logo Changer ( is_site_admin() doesn’t exist in WP 2.9.2 before bp_init – should be current_user_can(‘install_plugins’) )
    • Remove Avatars ( is_site_admin() doesn’t exist in WP 2.9.2 before bp_init – should be current_user_can(‘install_plugins’) )
    • BP Translate ( is_site_admin() doesn’t exist in WP 2.9.2 before bp_init – should be current_user_can(‘install_plugins’) )

Potentially Not Update Friendly (does not crash site but needs updating):

Plugins that don’t crash but do not check if BuddyPress is active:

    • BP Group Documents
    • BuddyPress Group Tags
    • BuddyPress Rate Forum Posts
    • BuddyPress Multilingual
    • BuddyPress Profile Widget for Blogs
    • TDLC Birthdays

    • BP Paginated Posts
    • BP Registration Options
    • BuddyPress Friends On-line (FOL)
    • Remove BuddyPress AdminBar
    • Invite Friends

Plugins that use an old method of BP detection and need updating to use bp_init loader method:

    • BuddyPress Maps
    • BuddyPress Group Blog
    • BuddyPress My Friends Widgets
    • BuddyPress Widget Pack
    • BuddyPress-Kaltura Media Component)
    • BuddyPress Group Email Subscription
    • BuddyPress Classifieds
    • BuddyPress Quick Press
    • BuddyPress Group Wiki
    • BuddyPress Sitewide Featured Posts

    • Tweetstream
    • Facestream
    • BP Group Management
    • BP Groupblog
    • BP Expand Activity
    • Invite Anyone
    • BuddyPress Forums Extras (all)
    • BuddyPress Like
    • oEmbed for BuddyPress
    • Forum attachments for BuddyPress
    • BP Profile Privacy
    • BP Notification Widget
    • BP Import Blog Activity
    • Custom Profile Filters for BuddyPress
    • BP Include non Member Comments
    • BP MPO Activity Filter
    • BuddyPress Links
    • BuddyPress Group Twitter
    • BuddyPress External Group Blogs
    • BP Random Members Widget
    • BuddyPress Template Pack
    • Group Forum Subscription for BuddyPress
    • Enhanced BuddyPress Widgets
    • BuddyPress Album+
    • BuddyPress Geo
    • BP Member Filter (but should move all BP specific code to separate file to be safe)
    • BP Member Map (but should move all BP specific code to separate file to be safe)
    • BuddyPress Restrict Group Creation (but should move all BP specific code to separate file to be safe)
    • BuddyPress Sitemap Generator (but should move all BP specific code to separate file to be safe)
    • Welcome Pack

Please post a followup message if you have updated your plugin, or if you find any other plugins that crash.

    Checking your BuddyPress plugins

Deactivate all of your plugins. Individually activate a single BuddyPress plugin. If it activates and you do not get a white screen or white screen with error message, then the plugin is update friendly. Otherwise please post it in this thread to add to the hall of shame! :) If you get a white screen then to fix this remove the plugin folder from wp-content/plugins/

I strongly agree with this. Conceptual “groups” and “forum” are two separate things.

“Sub-forums are not groups” and vice-versa … it is confusing for users and, yes, the “joining” issue puts people off.

It is kind of strange that when a user goes to post in Forums (tab) > they are then jumped to Groups (tab).

I’d rather keep Forum stuff in the forum, and Group stuff in groups.

I am not a great fan of activity streams … it seems like noise over data to me … I think the priority should be allowing communities of bloggers to be well integrated with a place they can share and discuss relative issues in order to strengthen, develop and order those communities. Something that has not existed before in WordPress.

WordPress has always been more about empowering individualism and one way broadcast rather than cross discussion.

This is a big conceptual shift … one better managed by discussion forums right now.

Perhaps, speaking conceptually … what it really needed was WordPress as a plugin for phpBB … with BP then added on top connecting the parts … rather than building a discussion forum on top of WordPress?

Having said that, I prefer the cleanliness of WP which is why I had such high hopes and invested my interest …

    Less is more.

This might assist. It’s related to double posts in the activity stream when using the feedwordpress plugin. I haven’t implemented it yet:

    I’m using the plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mu-sitewide-tags/

This basically allows me to have blog posts from the entire network show up on my primary blog loop, and it works perfectly.

However I did run into one issue though:

When I make a post on any blog other than the root blog, I now end up with the activity stream showing the new blog post twice.

I’m guessing that it’s logical because of how the plugin works, but I am also trying to find a way to fix it so that the activity stream only shows one instance of a new post.

I really have no idea where to start on this one.

    anyone have any ideas?

Chris – your latest update says compatible with standard wordpress but I have WordPress 2.9.2 and BP 1.2.3 and can’t find your plugin settings screen in my dashboard after activating. Can you tell me where to look?

I can speak to the ones I’ve written here.

Update friendly: BP Group Management, Enhanced BuddyPress Widgets (as long as you’re using the most recent version), Invite Anyone.

Not necessarily update friendly: Group Forum Subscription, which I haven’t updated for BP 1.2 so is use-at-your-own risk at the moment (I recommend https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-group-activity-stream-subscription/ instead).

As Andy Peatling mentioned to me in Twitter, here a list of the plugins I am using in my BuddyPress installation. Since some plugins have been known to break BuddyPress on upgrade, I would be very happy on your feedback as to the upgrade-friendliness of the plugins in this list. The ones in square brackets aren’t specifically BP so they shouldn’t be a problem.

Deactivating all plugins is a not-so-nice solution for BuddyPress, I hope the ugrade-friendliness-quality issues of plugins will be solved soon.

    My Plugins:

    ===============

    — Confirmed Update Friendly —-

    Tweetstream

    Facestream

    BP Group Management

    BP Groupblog

    BP Expand Activity

    Invite Anyone

    BuddyPress Forums Extras (all)

    BuddyPress Like

    oEmbed for BuddyPress

    — Not Update Friendly (crashes site) —-

    Group Forum Subscription for BuddyPress

    BuddyPress Album+ ( is_site_admin() doesn’t exist in WP 2.9.2 should be current_user_can(‘install_plugins’) )

Welcome Pack ( crashes on WP2.92 if BP is not active because it uses get_blog_option() )

    — Potentially Future Not Update Friendly (does not crash site but needs updating) —

BP Group Documents (doesn’t crash but does not use a bp_init loader)

Enhanced BuddyPress Widgets (doesn’t crash but does not use a bp_init loader)

BuddyPress Maps (uses old method, needs updating to use bp_init loader)

BuddyPress My Friends Widgets (uses old method, needs updating to use bp_init loader)

BuddyPress Rate Forum Posts (doesn’t crash but does not use a bp_init loader)

BuddyPress Widget Pack (uses old method, needs updating to use bp_init loader)
