nevermind, i found out I have to use wordpress mu
Which WP settings page?
The WordPress General settings page
Doh! I forgot to disable BuddyPress before doing it. I think that caused my problem.
I’m now able to upload avatars AND still have a workable Media Library.
Here’s my steps:
– Disable Buddy Press
– In Dashboard > Settings > Miscellaneous :
Store uploads in this foler: wp-content/uploads
Full URL path to files: http://yoursite.com/wordpressfolder/wp-content/uploads
– Make the already mentioned edits in bp-core-avatars.php
– Activate BuddyPress
Both avatars and media library worked for me.
This was working when I did an automated install from my server host … then upgraded wordpress through the dash.
I was having issue so I did a manual install of the latest WordPress / BuddyPress. When doing it this way my site no longer becomes viewable right after modifying and uploading the new bp-core-avatar file.
Site just goes to blank screen with not even a hint of an html header. Weird thing as well …. the bp-core-avatar file seems to expand! It keeps getting larger and larger.
I then have to delete and re-copy the BuddyPress folder in order for the site to show again.
Updated development version to 0.1.9b3
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-group-forum-extras/download/
Added Topic Preview – Hover over topic title link, inserts a new table row beneath the title with the first post post_content.
uses jquery hoverintent (default settings)
no theme edit but it traverses the dom tree on the bp-default theme – so you may have to edit the .js file to account for a different forum-loop.php structure.
no ajax – the first post_content is stored in html under a hidden div (i’ll add an option in the future to select full post or excerpt)

I have just moved my MU 2.9.2 and buddypress 1.2.3 site to a new domain. Probably did it a bit backwards, but have done it nonetheless. I have managed to get all users imported to new site DB – and only imported those members that have blogs.
Everything looking good except…
I have two logins, admin and my personal username, under the old domain, I had my personal username set up as the site adminstrator – so that I did not have to keep logging in under admin.
In WordPress Mu I can go to both dashboards under the My Blogs link. But I would like for it to show in the buddypress bar at the top of the page – like on the old domain. Where I can acess both blogs from the My blogs pulldown menu. I know this isn’t a huge propblem, but for ease of use, it would be great to fix this.
Seeing I can access everything in MU, I am thinking this is a buddypress problem? I have imported accross all BP tables and still it does not work. Is there a way to edit the SQL manually in phpmyadmin? If so, how do I go about doing this?
I eagerly await hearing from you on this little problem I am having.
This plugin (s2Member) now has Buddypress support. Haven’t tested it yet, but it looks very promising.
@massimonitti
Upgrade to BP 1.0.3:
https://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/buddypress.1.0.3.zip
Then follow the rest of the steps.
As always, make a backup of your DB and filesystem before proceeding.
Login to your WordPress dashboard and click on BuddyPress on the left hand side. You will see a link called Profile Field Setup. This is where you create and edit your questions.
Hope that explains what you are looking for

Hi, wondering if someone could help me please?
Currently in my sidebar on my BuddyPress website I have the members widget active. If possible could someone explain to me how I can format this differently or even point me to the file that controls the Members widget?
I have an ok knowledge of XHTML and CSS however I’m new to WordPress MU and Buddypress so a little out of my comfort zone. I have bought the BuddyPress for Idiots book but it doesn’t mention how to do this.
I have included an image on this site to show you how I would like it to look. http://bit.ly/cLtLcc
Many Thanks
Hi, I’ve wordpress mu + buddypress last version and I try to use this plugin. I’ve installed without problem but it seems doesn’t work. I also try to rename the plugin directory.
For example when I insert a url like “http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8OAF2cU6Xc” in the activity stream it remains only link. Like this http://madeintorino.com/members/admin/activity/1138
How can I do?
thanks
Hi everyone
First of all, I am using WordPress MU v2.9.2 and BuddyPress v1.2.3. My question involves the Profile Field Setup within the Admin Dashboard and the editable questions on that page. There is a particular required profile question that I edited directly in one of the files some time ago but I can no longer remember which file it was or it’s location.
Could someone here please tell me which file(s) I need to edit along with their full path(s)?.
Thanks so much!, Birdy
Probably because you didn’t deactivate all of the other plugins before upgrading BP.
Try deleting the entire BP plugin via FTP. Then log back into your WordPress install and deactivate all of your plugins (site-wide and homepage plugins). Then upload the latest version of BP via FTP and activate it. Then you can activate your other plugins.
Ok, I am just frustrated at this point.
I have the template pack plugin installed and working. That is great.
It there a file that would bring over the CSS and images to recreate the .content of any of the Buddypress themes? Right now I have the unstyled components of buddypress, which in my opinion is completely unusable, for others.
I am surprised that someone has not written a piece of a theme that will work as a good starting point for those who already are committed to a existing design. It seems it is an all or nothing situation. Am i missing something?
I could use a hand. This has been an incredible time suck. At this point I am about to settle with a forum and extend profiles. Sorry, very frustrated, even this website has been tough to find things on lately. I have followed the Buddypress development for a year now. It was one of the reasons I went with WordPress and not Drupal. Still glad about that choice but wish I could get this to work.
@Modemlooper Shucks, that’s too easy.
You should try the oEmbed plugin! It automatically allows you to insert videos from youtube/vimeo and others by simply putting in the URL.
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/oembed-for-buddypress/
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-profile-widget-for-blogs/
– enables blog admins to show their BuddyPress avatar with link to BP profile page plus own xprofile fields
I have a fresh install of the latest WordPress and Buddypress versions but I can’t get My Blogs to show on the admin bar.
Also, what’s the easiest way to “insert” bbpress into wordpress? I tried the get-header(); option inside of bbpress but the styles were conflicting to no end.
Swapping header.php on the blog files so it calls different CSS?
Has anyone created code or released a plugin that would combine this functionality with something that will display blog author in a buddypress user’s blog sidebar?
I poked around the MU forums and found some similar plugins, This one
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/profile-pic/
Sounds very close to what I am envisioning.. I am considering testing that plugin, with the one mentioned above in the first post of this thread, and the “blog-defaults” plugin to see if I can get all of my user’s blogs to have a widget auto added in a new default theme that will display their avatar, and a link to their buddypress profile.
Has anyone does this already and have any advice or code to share?
First, make a backup of your existing theme and I’m guessing here but…
You might be able to just take your existing WP theme and make it a child theme of bp-default. This should cause WP to go looking in the bp-default theme directory for anything not defined in your main WP theme directory.
Some stuff will break. Fixing it might be difficult. I haven’t tried this so good luck and make a backup first.
Oh, and let us know how it goes.
