Hey:
I’m new to this; be gentle with me.
Here’s the deal: I want to set up a site that has two separate user bases. The main users will be, say, business owners. The second group will be business trainers. I want to keep the two groups separate so that the trainers aren’t spamming the business owners with “Come to my seminar!” style posts, but can interact in a civil way, answering questions, providing information and just generally helping out. It looks like there is a plug-in under development that will allow some sort of segmentation of the user base. Is that correct?
Second. One of the key features of the site will be allowing the Businessmen to comment and offer feedback on the trainers: “I went to this course, and, while he was really interesting, he covered basically the same material as this person did, and they only charged half as much.”
Is this sort of thing currently possible without a lot of hand coding (I know enough php to spell it)? Are there plug-ins/plans afoot whereby one could take and wrestle with Buddypress and get it to do something like that? I don’t have a lot of time, but I have a soft spot for WordPress, and would prefer to use Buddypress than another (paid) system.
Thanks in advance.
“and uploaded to godaddy and then unzipped there which create a buddypress folder in the html directory of godaddy.”
The plugin folder needs to go in wp-content/plugins/.
have you tried installing it from the admin area of WordPress? Go to the plugin menu and pick Install New.

I got posthaste working but i want something abit more advanced with the same edit box the backend offers so people can upload photos etc!
ive got BP 1.2 and wordpress 2.9
no issues with installation of posthaste
Till the modification theme is online at wordpress theme directory, you are able to download the “4 to 5 widget column child theme” here:
http://kartobuddy.wordpress.com/2010/02/22/child-theme-with-a-single-4-to-5-columns-widget-page-for-buddypress-1-2/
Instead of downloading wordpress to my PC and then uploading to Godaddy(I ran into all kinds of problems that way…)
On january of 2010 I used godaddy automated script from hosting control center to automatically install wordpress 2.9.1 into my hosting account. My current account detail in godaddy for marinprofessionals.com is as follows:
Domain : marinprofessionals.com
Hosting Login : wandilly
Server IP Address : 97.74.215.63
Dedicated Hosting IP : 173.201.83.101
On January 2010 I also was able to upload the Current Theme to the marinprofessionals.com hosting account in godaddy is called :
Sliding Door 1.8.7 by Wayne Connor
(A unique template featuring sliding images in the header based on phatfusion imagemenu. Look at theme homepage to see the menu in action – the preview does not work on wordpress.org!!!! Sliding images in header link to pages, or can be redirected using the Page Links To plugin. The theme has a comprehensive support forum to help you get started at http://mac-host.com/support)
As far as Buddypress, back in October of 2009, I downloaded the version of I downloaded the bpress 1.1.1zip version and uploaded to godaddy and then unzipped there which create a buddypress folder in the html directory of godaddy. Nevertheless, I also see another version of bpress zip (1.0.2) which was uploaded in January 2010…
My website I was able to change the appearance of the sliling door of marinprofessionals but am not sure if it was done correctly. I would like help adding a directory capability and enable the creation of individuals blogs per each user registration…similar to what’s is avalable for the ” http://www.umwblogs.org” website … During 2009 I have tried to get help/answers from dirrent forums but was not able to make it work, could you please help??
@Peterverkooijen, you’re probably better of starting with the BP Backwards Compat plugin for a 1.1.3 theme.
Hi David,
Yes, you are right, but it is very very strange…
I will try to contact Andy to ask about it.
By the way, thanks for the reply.
Would this plugin also help in upgrading a custom Buddypress 1.1.3 theme to 1.2?
I’ll try that later this week…
Upgraded to BP1.2 with latest WordPressmu 2.9.1, and now the Avatars don’t display properly. It shows the default avatars but not uploaded thumbnails. Directory permission is fine and photos/thumbnails get uploaded to the proper directory (via buddypress interface) but once upload is complete, buddypress only shows broken (x) icon. Anyone has encountered or know how to fix this issue?
Thanks in advance.
Yup… it’s not a widget. Two options which would involved making a child theme. Don’t worry… it’s really simple: https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/
- Make a child theme with a custom sidebar.php file and comment out or delete the login block of code.
- Make a child theme and add this line to your “style.css” file
#login-text, sidebar-login-form {display: none;}
I suppose you could also try adding the code below to a “custom.php” file and putting it in your plugins directory (no child theme required)… but now I’m just getting silly. LOL (I haven’t tested this BTW).
<?php
add_action('wp_head', 'hide_login');
function hide_login() {
echo <<<CSS
<style type='text/css'>
#login-text, sidebar-login-form {display: none;}
</style>
CSS;
}
?>
or even this! (very silly)
<?php
add_action('bp_before_sidebar_login_form', 'open_login_comment');
function open_login_comment() { echo '<!--' }
add_action('bp_after_sidebar_login_form', 'close_login_comment');
function close_login_comment() { echo '-->' }
?>
So how to you intend for people to login? Just via the regular WordPress login?
I’m not sure… but the plugin was released by Andy who is the main core developer for BuddyPress. I didn’t even know about the plugin until I responded to your post. I knew there was a thread on here about your question about a week ago… so I just did a search.
Thanks a Lot, for fast replying and for the plugin!!!
I never noticed the existence of this one!
But, there are any plan of making it official part of Buddypress? It would be really useful.
Thanks Again. Best Regards.
I installed the buddypress-r2754, that I got in SVN, and installed it on a fresh wordpress 2.9.1 installation.
And I got a fatal error. Take a look on the image

Fatal error: Call to undefined function bp_has_activities() in /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/activity/activity-loop.php on line 5

@gregfielding
What part of the group homepage are you looking at adding the player?
This plugin only adds oEmbed support to activity updates and forum posts.

It looks like ustream.tv has oEmbed support.
But as stated in the readme.txt FAQ, you’ll need to add support for uStream to WordPress’ oEmbed provider list in order to allow uStream embeds. I’m not going to be adding any additional oEmbed providers to WordPress’ default list.
If you know a little bit about code, you can read here to add support yourself:
https://codex.wordpress.org/Embeds#Adding_Support_For_An_oEmbed-Enabled_Site
If you need help adding uStream support, I’m *thinking* of offering premium support to extend the plugin for a nominal fee (similar to other Wp plugin developers).
Yeah I know, not what some people wanted to hear. Basic support will always be free though. Of course, I haven’t thought about this in depth – just a spur-of-the-moment idea your post gave me that is sure to ignite some negativity
Not sure if I’m actually going to go through the premium support model though.

Re: oEmbed Discovery plugin – that should also work. I listed this in the readme.txt and its potential problems if you don’t trust your user base.
Also not sure if the upcoming version of oEmbed for BP (v0.6) will work with the oEmbed Discovery plugin, since the new version of the plugin changes the logic of how URLs are sent to WP’s oEmbed to enhance performance on your DB . I’ll do some testing, but if the oEmbed Discovery plugin doesn’t work in v0.6, at least you’ll still have v0.51!
Hi Andrea…thanks for the tips and helping a newbie.. Yep, I see everything you’re describing…
But wow…wish I knew what I’m trying to accomplish exactly.
Am I supposed to just re-arrange the HTML elements? Match the div classes?
The other thing I don’t get is, both my page.php and BP template files seem to be calling/loading the sidebar element…if so, is only one of them supposed to?
I’ve never really hacked any WordPress layout before (new from Joomla)
I’m really interested in learning this aspect of WordPress though if anyone is interested in helping out.
I’m having issues with the (bbPress) forum installation. after installation, the forums navigation tab appears, but when clicked it leadsto a blank page. I have tried reinstalling times. I installed the latest version of wordpress (not MU) and latest version of buddypress.
If I try to create a group and click ‘enable discussion forum’ I get a blank page as well. I’ve search the forums already but can’t find a sollid answer. Anyone knows this problem or can direct me to the sollution?
@Erich73-
Haha! I appreciate the thought. I’m sure Automattic is able to afford to buy many things! I have no issue with Automattic. I do not expect them to pay me.
@everyone
My code, like any other GPLed theme or plugin is freely available for all to use. So, if Automattic wants to merge my code into BP core, I would be honored and not expect anything else in return.
I hope that my posts (in this thread and on my website concerning this issue) do not come across as me being bitter. That is not the case.
I fully support and believe in the Open Source model as expressed via the GPL. I also believe in giving back to those Open Source projects from which you have benefited. I of course have done that with the hundreds of hours I’ve donated as a moderator on these forums.
The referenced-to post above was just my attempt to try to figure out a possible way where I could actually earn part of my living by creating great-quality plugins for the WordPress / BuddyPress community. I think talented programmers should be able to do that without having to resort to consulting. I have no interest in providing consulting services. I owned a consulting company for 7 years. It was great, but I have no need or intention of going back down that road.
So, enough said with all of this stuff about me and my needs. I appreciate people’s concerns and suggestions.
Let’s put this thread back on track. Please try to limit your comments to the future of privacy in BuddyPress and not about me!
@idotter-
Eventually my plugin will encompass group and blog privacy as well.
@paulhastings0-
The graph represents about $125 of funding–which is close to my original goal!
I never expected to achieve the funding goal. That post was for two reasons: an experiment to see if raising development funds was even feasible; an awareness campaign to get people talking and thinking about plugin developers and the vast amount of time that they put into WordPress/Buddyress projects so that the community can benefit from their work.
The goal is an honest assessment of the amount of time (which is then converted to dollars) that I will be required to put into the project in 2010–coding and supporting the plugin. It also covers some of my time already spent on coding the plugin.
As I state in that post, I’m already committed to bringing my privacy plugin up to date to work with BP version 1.2. When that will happen is the question. I am working on it, but not full time as I have another project that has top priority (my startup). Just like anyone else, I must focus most of my efforts on activities that will help me actually earn a living.
Once my BP 1.2-compatible privacy plugin is released, I’m not sure where it will go from there. We will see. Of course, if my privacy plugin gets merged into core (in some form or another), that would be great!
Burt Adsit, a past forum moderator and talented developer, created a plugin that did exactly what you are suggesting. It is woefully out of date. I believe it only works with BP V 1.0. But, some other talented developer could possibly use Burt’s code, adapting it to the current version of BP.
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bpcontents/
@Xevo, I’m pretty sure Erich73 was not asking for a poll plugin. I think his comment was about the relative pointlessness of open polls for new features, when there are still many core issues that should be fixed first.
I remember we’ve gone through this over six months ago, also with a poll and promises that certain features, like privacy, would become core in version 1.2 and 1.3. Very little of that has materialized.
… I can see that users of wordpress/buddypress wanting the wp-admin to be only for admins as the name suggests and keep the users off the creepy admin panel.
Absolutely. That’s why I’m trying to sort out front-end posting with P2 and/or Posthaste. Raoulduke is working on it as well.
