    In reply to: Chat Plugin Problem

    I installed the plugin for testing purpose and I didn’t like it at all.

    The chat software it self is nice stuff.

    Build by https://blueimp.net/ajax/

    I daunt like to have advertising stuff integrated. And there is add-sense in this Plugin.

    I think this is not the finest way of making money.

    If you want to test it, you need to install the chat client too.

    For me it look like you just installed the plugin.

    Go to the plugin directory. There must be a directory chat. Go in there and read the readme file.

    After you fallow the instillation process of the chat software.

    You will be able to chat and the Page will show up.

    You will need to enter your mysql connection information.

    I don’t know, but I think it is the best not to use the wordpress database for this.

    Actually it is not a plugin and has nothing to do with wordpress it self.

    The chat has its own connection to the db.

    If you make a new group and join user(s) into it, does this problem reoccur? If it does, try to deactivate all plugins other than BuddyPress and make a new group and try again. If it doesn’t reoccur, then it’s a conflict with a plugin.

    I have read recently of problems with feedwordpress + BuddyPress, so there’s an incompatibility somewhere (if indeed feedwordpress works with WPMU).

    I’m inclined to thing this is a problem from the Groupblogs plugin, but let me know what happens when you test the above.

    Alright, this is starting to congeal. Only thing is, I”m about 80% confident with what you’re saying regarding the creation of actions in the functions.php file and those actions hooking into a do_action call in the parent theme.

    2 questions:

    1) If I create an action in the child functions.php that does not exist in the various templates of the parent theme, is it better practice to fiddle with the template file(s) of the parent theme, adding the do_action call there, or to move the template file to the child theme before making any changes?

    2) Do you or anyone else have any suggestions for references a semi-savvy-newbie might use to gain a more complete understanding of how to write actions in the functions.php file? I assume there’s some fairly complete documentation in the wordpress codex, but perhaps there’s a link or two to some nice tutorial-type blog entries? I probably need to spend some more time with PHP coding anyway :-)

    Thanks everybody.

    The best way to start with a theme for BP is to start off with the bp-default theme. Then copy files across from the bp-sn-parent theme if you need to modify a file. If not, then you can leave that file in bp-sn-parent, cause WP will get that automatically for you.

    Of course, you can add all the functions later. The codex here is a great starting point on what functions are available to you. You can also go through the bp-sn-parent theme and have a look what’s in there and move it across, if you don’t want to use a parent/child theme structure.

    You can place div#search-login-bar anywhere you like.

    do_action functions cannot be reversed. They happen at exactly that spot in the template files. There’s so many, though, that you won’t have a problem finding one that suits your needs. Basically, you can write some custom functionality and add that to a certain hook by calling the add_action function. Here’s an example.

    Somewhere in a template you might have this:

    do_action( 'your_action_name' );

    Then in your theme’s functions.php file you could put the following:

    function your_function_name()
    {
    //some stuff happens here
    }
    add_action( 'your_action_name', 'your_function_name' );

    That’s basically it. Sometimes the action passes along a variable with which you can then work.

    Hope this helps you along a bit. The codex at wordpress.org is pretty extensive as well and you’ll find loads of stuff on actions.

    Hi Marius,

    Do you have a Demo-website online to test your plug-in ?

    Another thing: is there a chance to have something like the following, but not on a Group-Blog, but just a normal User-Blog ?

    https://apeatling.files.wordpress.com/2008/06/blog.jpg

    Many thanks,

    I am in the process of designing a custom theme for a website running on WPMU 2.8.4 with an install of BuddyPress 1.1.1. I don’t have much need for the multi-user aspect of WPMU, but went with this as my “CMS” because of the social networking components BuddyPress can bring to the table. At least in the near term I will only be using one blog with a pretty extensive home-page involving some content managed through WordPress and some pages that are essentially independent.

    So I have built a theme for the main WordPress blog completely from scratch. Now I’m scratching my head as to how I’m going to integrate the BuddyPress features I need into the areas of the theme where I need them. My strategy so far has been to take all the files in the BuddyPress parent theme that weren’t present in my custom theme, move them into my custom theme folder, then dissect the core template files from the BuddyPress parent theme (header.php, home.php, etc.), extracting the BuddyPress elements, and placing them into my template files where necessary.

    Here is the current result – http://boxmediasolutions.com/wpmuTest/

    It seems to be going along okay at the moment, but I’m thinking there has to be a better way to go about this, so I have a couple of questions for the community if anyone cares to offer advice.

    1) Is there an easier way to do this kind of thing that already has good documentation that I’m just overlooking?

    2) Can I move the div#search-login-bar out of the header, placing it essentially atop the content div in only a few specific pages (ie – the ones that involve connecting with the community)?

    3) Is there documentation somewhere explaining the template hierarchy of WPMU and BuddyPress, how they interact, and what is exactly being called for by commands like do_action( ‘bp_before_search_login_bar’ ), do_action( ‘bp_after_search_login_bar’ ), do_action( ‘bp_before_header’ ), etc?

    4) Can commands like the ones mentioned in question 3 be reversed, like calling for the before/after search login bar after the before/after header actions?

    I am quite comfortable editing/developing WP themes and template files, though I am completely new to BuddyPress and WPMU, and I am not really well versed in PHP coding, just to give you a bit of background.

    Thanks a ton in advance for any advice!

    @DJPaul, thanks for the feedback and the info you offer. My basics:

    1. wpmu 2.8.4a

    2. subdomain

    3. n/a

    4. upgraded WPMU regularly since 2.7

    5. Was WPMU functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress? yes

    6. BP 1.1.1

    7. Did you upgraded from a previous version of BP? last week when the current version was released.

    8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated? Yes, 2 were activated on the main admin when and since this has occured:

    a. Group Forum Subscription for BuddyPress

    b. BP Groupblog

    In mu-plugins directory:

    akismet-credit-inserter

    akismet

    sitewide-tags

    wordpressmu-favicon

    9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes? Standard

    10. Have you modified the core files in any way? No

    11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php? No

    12. If running bbPress, which version? Or did your BuddyPress install come with a copy of bbPress built-in? Using built-in bbPress

    13. The errors that occurred during the period these member place holders ’empty’ were created are at the link. The IDs # were different. With bp-groupblog activated this error is generated any time any group is visited (the group doesn’t need to have a groupblog). Prior to this ‘event’, Groupblogs were activated when members joined other groups without any ’empty’ members being added to the group:

    https://wordpress.org/support/topic/319417

    Some blogs (not home blog) have feedwordpress plugin activated. It’s use generates errors/warnings. The ‘Failed to fetch’ started yesterday and the plugin is no longer functioning. Neither of these errors are logged around the time the ’empty’ members were added to groups:

    [20-Oct-2009 17:15:32] PHP Warning: Illegal offset type in /home/xxxx/public_html/wp-includes/rss.php on line 1459

    [20-Oct-2009 17:34:20] MagpieRSS: Failed to fetch (HTTP Error: <url> malforme)

    It doesnt have to be exactly like this.. just a wordpress theme that has a look that suits with the normal BuddyPress layout.. I’ll try to look into this, and hopefully I can make something, but some help would be needed!

    To defend Mr Peatling, I believe he has just taken the existing WordPress FBC plugin and adapted it to work with WPMU/BuddyPress.

    Hi fellow Buddies!

    I’m currently a bit frustrated with WordPress MU, because it seems like it creates totally independent blogs when my users creates blogs on my BuddyPress site.

    Ideally I would like to predefine a set of categories, and share these with the user blogs.

    The users should not be able to create their own categories (I don’t wan’t to end up having a big category mess).

    So that when a visitor clicks on a category, say “Wedding Entertainment” he/she is taken to a category page that shows BOTH blog posts from the main site blog as well as the users blogs.

    Is that at all possible?

    Widgets displaying on certain blogs/pages is probably something you are best searching the WordPress forum/plugin directory for, as it’s not something that BuddyPress implements.

    Hi Everyone,

    I was browsing the forum and came across this image: http://apeatling.files.wordpress.com/2008/06/blog.jpg and was amazed to find out that somehow this beautiful design for a member blog has not appeared yet. With the latest 1.1 release we even have a forum page which looks perfectly integrated into BuddyPress but somehow there has’nt shown up a member blog theme that matches Buddypress..

    Is there a reason for this, because I think it would make buddypress complete, because the switch from the nicely designed BP-Home to the Kubrick theme that shows up on a member blog is something that hurts my eyes :D Sadly my knowledge of wordpress themes is really low, so it would take me a veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery long time to acomplish something that looks anything like that screenshot.. So if there are people who can make something like this, I think a lot of people would be very happy and it would be a great addition to the Buddypress package (I think :D)

    The text “The default theme for BuddyPress” cannot be translated as it is in a .css file. As only the site administrator will see that text when they activate the theme, is it a big issue? The other text here is part of WordPress.

    The wrong path thing is more interesting and there are some other forum posts here with that problem. I don’t know when I will get time to look into it so maybe someone else can help.

    that looks pretty awesome! Is mediawiki a standalone wiki or is it integrated with WordPress in some way? How hard is it to get the whole shabang running? thanks in advance :D

    ps: Is there a default member Blog theme available that matches the default BP look?

    Hi Everyone,

    I am new to WordPress and Buddypress and I’m currently looking at all possibilites for a future community website. So far I am really pleased with the available options and I’m able to implement all the functions I need thanks to the core components or plug-ins, except for a simple Wiki for all users. So I was thinking of ways to achieve this (I’m no programmer sadly) and thought up the following:

    If I install a wiki plugin on my main WordPress MU blog and automatically asign all users in the community as “contributors” then I should be able to integrate a WIKI into my site ?

    If I add a new menu link after Blogs called “Wiki” which points my user towards this Wiki page on my main blog it should work right? Or am I missing something?

    Thanks in advance :D

    hi,Your page will not be accessible as http://yourdomain.com/features.php as it resides in your theme,It should be accessible via http://yourdomain.com/wp-content/themes/your_theme_name/pages/features.php

    Now my advise,better look at How to use page template in wordpress.

    https://codex.wordpress.org/Pages#Page_Templates

    You can use your features.php as page template and create a page features, so this file can be accessed via yourdomain.com/features

    Hope it helps.

    @jeff, no problem when feedwordpress is disabled. And yes, compatibility up to 2.8.1 is a problem

    @r-a-y thanks for feedback. My setup consists of the latest plugin and RSS libraries. Issue still exists but further discussion should take place here:

    I coded a “Features” Page similar to the one on http://en.wordpress.com/features/

    It is fully translatable via GNU gettext localization framework because the social network should be available in different languages.

    I know want that page to be a part of my custom theme. I created a new folder in my themes directory called “pages” and put the file “features.php” in it.

    It is not accessible with http://www.mydomain.com/pages/features.php

    I would love to take a look at the skeleton component, but codex is temporary not available. Any hints how i could make the “features.php” accessible and show up as http://www.mydomain.com/features?

    hi everybody,

    i’m running bp 1.1.1 on wpmu 2.8.4

    as i have a heavily modified wp theme running on the main blog i decided to, as suggested, install buddypress to a 2ndary blog called “community”.

    working perfectly, except one issue with bp-album … i asked on the author’s website, as i didn’t get an answer i thought maybe here some pro could have a suggestion for my problem :-)

    basically the pictures in /members/xxx/album are showing a 404.

    i traced it down to the fact that i got buddypress installed on a 2ndary blog. the album is searching for the image on “http://xxx.com/community/wp-content/…” in my case (whereas /community/ is the root dir of buddy press but not the root dir of wordpress as i explained before).

    how can i set the picture path to root – or strip out “community” via modrewrite?

    thanks a million

    anna.

    Great idea and I would love to help out in creating buddypress themes.. I’m experienced in making themes, but not familiar with wordpress/buddypress but I think it would be good to have a site dedicated to bp themes only :)

    I was able to successfully install the Buddypress plugin and its working fine as well. However, I am unable to setup forum. When I login to my admin dashboard (as Administrator for WP MU), I can see the link “BuddyPress” in the admin area. But when I click on “Forum Set Up” link, I get the follwoing message (pasted below).

    How do I create a new forum from admin area? I can’t see any option to create a forum/thread either when I go to my website and click on “Forum” tab.

    Please help!

    =====================

    Forums Setup

    bbPress forum integration in BuddyPress has been set up correctly. If you are having problems you can re-install

    NOTE: The forums directory will only work if your bbPress tables are in the same database as your WordPress tables. If you are not using an existing bbPress install you can ignore this message.

    Hi All,

    I’ve searched for this but haven’t found how to accomplish my install goal.

    I understand the parent-child theme concept (mostly) but this is what I’m trying to accomplish:

    I want to have a magazine type site (let’s call it “xyzmag.com”). I then want to have a sub-domain called “my.xyzmag.com” which is a wpmu/bp installation with all of the normal stuff that bp offers. So, users will have their own pages, groups etc. at my.xyz.com/johnsmith/. I do have wildcards enabled but don’t think johnsmith.my.xyz.com has a good url flow to it. Hence the subdirectory scheme.

    The question of how to get this to work seamlessly is escaping me. I will be using a child theme based on ThemeShaper’s Thematic framework for the xyzmag.com. I want to have the same look/feel for the wpmu/buddypress subdomain. If someone logs in to xyzmag.com, I want to have them also logged in to my.xyzmag.com at the same time. The only way to accomplish this that I can see is to have xyzmag.com as a wpmu install. Am I right on this? This would be similar to WordPress.COM. Or, can I have just a wp stand-alone install propagate the logged in users down to the wpmu/buddypress subdomain?

    I’m not too afraid of getting my hand dirty in the template codes of the Thematic child theme if that’s what it takes but I want to make sure there’s not a simpler way to do this.

    Thanks in advance for any help this forum provides.

    Michael
