    wordpress 3.1 (single site)
    buddypress 1.2.8

    I have 2 version of BP installed. one on my local machine where the address is something like : http://localhost:8080/site. The avatar uploads work perfectly on that installation.

    However, on my second installation i have a problem setting up avatars: the url is something like: http://site.domain.com/. I hope this information can help;
    1. I checked the avatar folder and noticed that the images are successfully uploaded. So we’re not looking @ a permissions problem here.

    2. The browser (google chrome). after loading the page for a very long time (well over 2 minutes for a 70kb image),I see two images. the full image (uncropped) and a thumbnail, however there’s no functionality to crop. and the full image is displayed with its original dimensions (width X height) andits not contained in that fancy cropping box. I also see the the “crop avatar” button.

    3. If I click on the ‘crop’ button, then the new avatar becomes set according to what that thumbnail looked like. So there’s no problem cropping the image. There seems to be a problem loading the functionality to adjust and resize the cropping.

    4. So, I inspected the site a little further and chrome gave me this error: Failed to load resource: jquery.Jcrop.js

    ~~~
    I’d like to specifically point out that the only configuration different between my two installations is that the one that is not working nicely is accessible through a sub-domain, whereas the one that is working is accessible through a sub-directory.
    I’m tempted to guess that there’s a problem somewhere in retrieving the url / path of the avatar I just uploaded and that causes jquery.jcrop.js not to be loaded.
    I’m going to do some more sniffing. If I get a solution, i’ll post it. If you find a solution please post back
    Thank you in advance
    Hi,
    Integration with wordpress can seem a bit complicated. I really suggest watching this :
    https://bbpress.org/forums/topic/basic-integration-screencast
    The only difference is he is running an older version – but the process is pretty much identical. Instead of looking for the salt keys as he did though, you will see that they are generated for you and you can just paste them in (you’ll see what I mean).
    Hope that helps!
    I have wordpress 3.1 with plug-in buddypress 1.2.8 installed. My plan is to have a social network with the users having a page and a main page and also a legit forum. I saw that bbpress could be integrated but I have been having a ton of trouble integrating them with sharing cookies. I originally just made a page called “forums” and changed the permalink so the page of the bbpress forum but I couldn’t get it to integrate the logins and there was some issues with cookies and other things that I don’t understand. Is there a simple way of doing this? Bbpress seems to have less support than buddypress though it seems to do what I want better…but rather than changing my whole system later I would rather get buddypress working now if there is a way. Is there a simple forum plug-in or something I can install to have a “forum” page? Thx for the help.
    @allivant I see you installed BP template pack. You will need to make adjustments to the HTML structure of the template pack files transferred over to your WP theme folder during the process. You need to download those folders and files to your computer, revise per your WP theme structure and upload revisions to theme folder in server.
    1st. This is a Buddypress support forum only, not questions about wordpress plugins.
    2. There are many plugins out there that would fit your taste, you must go searching for the right one, not us.
    3. Don’t bump posts more than once every 24 hours.
    SUCCESS!
    I just made my first successful Group/Forum post in the past 2 days of troubleshooting!
    The solution : Downgraded my version of MySQL – as the newer(or newest) version has known hiccups with some people in creating database tables (in this case, my installation was failing to create bb_posts) :
    By downgrading my version of MySQL I was able to successfully install bbPress with a fresh copy (I did this manually but am positive it would work with single-click installation as well) – and the missing table (bb_posts) was created during my fresh installation.
    I sincerely hope this helps someone else out there as I know the ‘error creating topic’ dilemma has affected many people and there are lots of different solutions. Some of us simply need to try the methods mentioned in other threads (deleting forum_id value, or re-enabling forum option in group admin) –
    Others are actually dealing with database issues, including missing table(s). This was my case, and I was missing that table because of a MySQL syntax error during installation of bbPress – fixed by downgrading my MySQL version on my WAMP server. (Hate to repeat myself but I know it’s important to be clear).
    I have to thank the posters in the thread I linked in the OP for suggesting a manual installation (and hnla for linking to that thread in another topic) – it was by doing a manual installation that I was able to see the error report and pinpoint which database table in particular was failing to install properly, and why (MySQL syntax error).
    As for your question on the versions I am using, hnla:
    I am running WordPress 3.1 with BuddyPress 1.2.7 and bbPress 1.0.3.
    My server is WAMP Server 2.
    Well – I’ve made progress already : I did a clean re-install of WordPress, then bbPress –
    Doing a manual install of bbPress is helpful (for those having issues) because if there are any issues with installation (which may be occuring during a single click install as well) it will be laid out in the post-installation error report. I’m sure there is an error report log somewhere after a single-click installation I just haven’t bothered to look for one –
    In any case I googled the error coming up on my report :
    `You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ‘TYPE = MYISAM DEFAULT CHARACTER SET ‘utf8” at line 16`
    and found mention of errors with SQL syntax involving utf8 on many other sites (not just for bbpress) – the general consensus is that the newer version(s) of MYsQL sometimes have hiccups with utf8 during table creation (I have no idea why). In particular I am running a WAMP server with MySQL version 5.5.8
    Seeing as BuddyPress has a min. requirement of MySQL version 4.x (something, hehe) – I figured I would try to run a manual install with a lower version of MySQL, so I installed 5.1.40 (arbitrary, could have used any version I’m sure) : WAMP Server 2 makes this very easy by the way, simply mouse over your MySQL -> Version -> and click ‘More’. You can then toggle between versions.
    In any case, with MySQL 5.1.40 installed I was able to do the manual install and there were no errors reported! And checking my database I now see that bb_posts was successfully installed!
    Testing now to see if this made any changes in the forum errors I’ve been having with bbPress + BuddyPress.
    @hnla –
    Thanks! I was sure I was missing at least one or many database tables, and I suppose my error report from the manual install is making it clear that I’m missing bb_posts.
    Manual installation of bbpress consists of downloading it in a zip (available on the bbpress site) installing it on the server much like wordpress was installed – and then integrating it with wordpress (which allows it later to be used with buddypress):
    The guide I use for manual installation and wordpress integration:
    http://www.wpmods.com/integrate-wordpress-bbpress
    I always successfully install bbpress but not without the above posted errors. Although manual installation was suggested as a fix to the common posting errors problem it makes no difference for me as the database table “bb_posts” fails to be created whether I do a single-click install or manual.
    As for your statement
    `It’s not wasting peoples time to suggest all possible solutions to a problem that is difficult to pin down to an exact cause`
    – I created this thread specifically for people who have pinned down part of the problem – namely that we are missing database table(s) after installation. So maybe we can tackle whatever is causing that issue in particular.
    *EDIT*
    NOTICE: SOLUTION TO MY PROBLEM HAS BEEN FOUND AND POSTED ON 7TH POST ON THIS PAGE
    *Old Post* :
    So – finished the manual install and still got the errors – can anyone make sense of them? And are they related to or do they explain the missing database tables?
    Well I was assuming he was meaning buddypress because it was posted on the buddypress forums….
    But because he was talking about *host* he could of been talking about wordpress- it was unclear.
    Hi,
    BuddyPress depends on WordPress. Have you installed WordPress on your hosting account?
    If not, I would kindly say this is a WordPress issue. Try reading this article to install WordPress:
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress
    If that article is greek to you, Hostgator should have some form of customer support; it should be quite easy for them to setup WordPress for you.
    If you need additional help, please head over to the WordPress support forum:
    https://wordpress.org/support
    Once you have WordPress setup, all you need to do is to login to your WordPress admin dashboard and navigate to “Plugins > Add New”. Then, search for “buddypress” and install.
    Yes, you can install multiple WPs on a single database.
    You just need to install each version of WordPress with a different DB prefix:
    bhain3s – Your error sounds like BuddyPress was partially uploaded and activated. If possible, try a manual upload to your /wp-content/plugins/ directory and reactivate BP:
    There’s this plugin:
    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wpmu-default-user-role/
    Probably needs updating for WP 3.1 though.
    If you’re familiar with WordPress filters, there’s a filter you can hook into to override the member excerpt – “bp_get_member_latest_update” (located in /plugins/buddypress/bp-core/bp-core-templatetags.php).
    If you’re new to WordPress plugin development, check out this codex article:
    === but other than my main blog, brand new install? ===
    It all depends on a variety of factors which include what your realistic expectations about adding BuddyPress are. I don’t know what your current site/blog is all about so only you can determine if social networking will enhance your current site’s branding or if it would be better if the social networking feature was a separate entity/site altogether.
    Well, I definitely had PHP 4.3 or better, MySQL 4.1.2 or better, and Apache Module mod_rewrite enabled for “pretty permalinks”. I had installed it a couple of times over before that, but I can’t remember whether I tested the clickthrough to the single hello world post for that (just saw the home page and that the dashboard worked), so I wouldn’t know whether I had a fully stable WordPress install to begin with.
    I’ll give the reinstall a try and report the results for posterity in this thread.
    you say: stay single WP installation,
    but other than my main blog, brand new install? hence my main blog if for it purpose…
    I do not want users create a blog/site of their own.
    === … relocating my .htaccess file to various locations throughout the /var/www/html hierarchy … I thought the BuddyPress installation instructions were pretty straightforward, but it seems to actually work in a whole different way from what is documented. ===
    BuddyPress installation is pretty straightforward when server configuration is stable and meets standard requirements https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/before-installing/
    which includes WordPress install already working with pretty permalinks at the very least https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks#Using_.22Pretty.22_permalinks You should read this as it addresses the .htaccess file which is at the crux of the matter
    The .htaccess file for your WordPress installation should be where WP is installed.
    If WP in root, http://yoursite.com/ then .htaccess should be at http://yoursite.com/.htaccess.
    if WP in subdirectory, then .htaccess should be at http://yoursite.com/subdirectory/.htaccess.
    Strongly recommend you restart from scratch by deactivating BuddyPress and BP plugins, change theme to default twentyten theme, deleting .htaccess file wherever you placed it and dropping tables in DB. Reinstall WordPress and resolve pretty permalinks issues at https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting before installing BuddyPress.
    Good luck.
