Looks like you’re on single WP. Are you on Linux or Windows server? Have you checked out this Codex info – https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks?

Deactivate BuddyPress and resolve permalink structure first.

Open up your site’s .htaccess file and compare it to example in article above. If different, then save a copy of your .htaccess file to a safe place, and replace what’s in .htaccess file in your server with what’s posted in article above related to your server setup.

If that doesn’t resolve your issue, you can get more assistance at https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting

    Hi there

We updated both wordpress and buddypress yesterday on a developpement instalation.

Since then, we have an error when we try to activate plugins.

Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /PATH/TO/plugins/buddypress/bp-core/bp-core-cssjs.php:40) in /PATH/TO//wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 897

This problem also occur when we try to activate themes.

However, when we click the back button from the error, the plugin is indeed activated…

We replaced the bp-core-cssjs.php with the one from the previous version (1.2.7), and it solved this error.

The only difference between the two version is at line 47 :

    1.2.8 :
    add_action( is_multisite() ? ‘network_admin_menu’ : ‘admin_head’, ‘bp_core_admin_menu_icon_css’ );

    1.2.7 :
    add_action( ‘admin_head’, ‘bp_core_admin_menu_icon_css’ );

Does anyone is aware of this problem or can reproduce it?

    Thanks! Keep on truckin!

    S.

My aproach seems to be a little too systematic – however I would like to ask if there is a comprehensive online listing of all buddypress plugins and their compatibility issues – with WP 3.x and among each others? This could be just one big table, however I could not find anything like this. I am not talking about the “works / work not” thing at the WP plugin site – it should be something more overviewable and it would be great to have an API so plugins could check for dependencies and compatibility issues. Is there anything like this?

Site admins and plugin authors may want to read my recent post on the BP dev blog regarding relevant changes in 1.2.8: http://bpdevel.wordpress.com/2011/02/24/updating-your-buddypress-plugins-for-1-2-8/

I made the upgrade for test and the menu didn’t show the plugins configs.
Also, the home just didn’t show anything, I think ir really better waiting for some days/weeks to make a safe upgrade :)

If you have BP installed already, and you want to enable multisite https://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network :

    1. You need to deactivate all WP/BP plugins and change to default theme (twentyten) first.
    2. Note, that if you have had single WP for some time, you can only go multisite in subdomain structure i.e. http://newsite1.example.com. Make sure that your server is set up for that.
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network#Step_2:_Setting_Wildcard_Subdomains
    3. You only add `define(‘WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE’, true);` to wp-config.php to get `Tools > Network` in your dashboard to start the process. If your server is up to the task, follow dashboard message to enable multisite in your install.
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network#Step_3:_Allow_Multisite
= If you encounter multisite creation problems, resolve that first in WP forums https://wordpress.org/support/forum/multisite before re-activating BP/WP plugins.

    Hello,

I have tons of experience developing themes for wordpress… and Im very interested in creating a social networking site with wordpress and buddypress!
My question is which version of WP is better to run Buddypress?

    Thank you,
    Onyx

If you can’t see the menu links, if you’re using multisite, you’ll need to be sure that you’re looking at the network dashboard.

It’s so tempting to press that button (those update messages really nag at you), but I’m going to hold off until I have tested all my plugins and have a good window of time in case something goes wrong

Reporting same issue as Andrés Richero on my localhost with 3.1 and BP 1.28. Missing Buddypress dashboard menu items for BP plugins. Site works, but.

Those links should come back when the plugin authors update their plugins to be compatible with 3.1

I’m trying to build a “simple” media-rating WP site where the home page displays a random image or video. Visitors can then rate the media, and are automatically taken to the next randomly-chosen media item. For reference: I think “Hotornot.com” is the closest example to a site like this I can find.

A breakdown of the basic visitor experience:

    – land on home page, presented with a single image or video with an option to rate.
    – after rating, visitor is shown another random post.
    – repeat ad infinitum.

So I need to make my site do the following:

    – Display a single, randomly-chosen item from the media library.
    – Allow visitors to vote on what’s displayed (I’ve seen a number of rating plugins, but I’m curious what people recommend).
    – Once the vote has been submitted, a new randomly-chosen image is loaded (this is an ideal–but not entirely necessary–function, as long as there is a way to click a “next” button to generate a new random post).
    – The random posts should still have a copy-pasteable/bookmarkable/”Like”-able permalink structure. I’ve found some “random gallery” plugins after a quick Google search, but they all seem to display their content in the same URL, making individual posts impossible to bookmark.

Just to be clear: I will be placing the media in the library myself, and likely choosing which media will be going into the randomized posts by applying a tag or category to the ones I want displayed in that area, unless someone has a better suggestion.

I’d eventually like for visitors to have a more social experience, by submitting their own media to be voted on, starting threads, messaging one another, etc., which is why I’d like to integrate it into BuddyPress if possible.

I’ve built numerous WordPress sites, but nothing like this, and I’ve only played around with BuddyPress casually.

It’s potentially a commercial site, but to be honest right now I’m just looking to make something to be used by myself and a couple dozen friends just for laughs. For this reason I’d like to build the site with free or cheap plugins and minimal time investment.

I’d appreciate any advice or input on this, even if it’s just a link to a tutorial somewhere or a plugin recommendation. Like I said, free to cheap is ideal, but I’d like to know what my options are, even if they’re potentially expensive.

    Thanks so much!

If a user is logged into WordPress in the same browser there is no way to have a user register another account. Try this on any site on the web an I guarantee you can not.

Just updated my site to 3.1 and 1.2.8. The only thing i can notice up to now is that i´ve lost the plugin config links that appeared under the buddypress menu tab. Any idea on how to fix this?
    Thanks all.

Thanks for the step by step, albill. We’re still trying to straighten out the problems with the wordpress.org repository, and we’ll have a real fix soon. Sorry for the inconvenience, all.

So, the fix that worked for me was:

    1. Go to https://bbpress.org/download/ and download current bbpress zip or tar file.
    2. Unzip or untar it, which will give you a “bbpress” directory
    3. Ftp to your site. Rename bb-config.php to something else in your root directory.
    4. go to “wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-forums/
    5. In that directory, upload the bbpress directory (not the contents of it but the actual bbpress directory including its contents)
    6. Rename bb-config.php back to bb-config.php in your root directory for your wordpress site
    7. Go to *yoursite*/wp-admin/admin.php?page=bb-forums-setup
    8. Tell it to reinstall bbpress using the existing file (and make sure it is pointing to the right path to find bb-config.php)

This fixed my site and everything is working again.

I have the latest versions of buddypress and wordpress installed, and everything seemed to work perfectly. However, I’ve found when someone clicks on the Activity tab, and then on the RSS feed button on that page, it comes up with a `XML Parsing Error: XML or text declaration not at start of entity Location: http://hub.tccd.edu/activity/feed/ Line Number 2, Column 1:`

I have run the fix-rss-feeds plugin and it didn’t find any white space. I entered the link http://hub.tccd.edu/activity/feed/ into the w3c feed validator and it validates, so now I’m at a loss. All my other RSS feeds seem to work fine. Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Also, for reference, the link to the main site is http://hub.tccd.edu

There is a problem with the way that wordpress.org created the zip file. We’re looking into it.

I noticed John disabled comments for the latest post, the 1.2.8 release announcement. Is there any particular reasoning behind this?

It wouldn’t have been that odd if it wasn’t for the fact that every post before it enables comments, unlike the wordpress.org blog for instance where posts comments are also disabled.

No, don’t do that. The developers are aware of this and the 1.2.8 fix is out.

You should always test *any* upgrade of *any* type in a development or test environment. Never, ever, ever, ever, ever put untested code into production! A word to the wise :)
