I’m receiving this message when trying to activate the plug in. I’m using the latest version of wordpress. Any advice?

WordPress 3.0.4.
BuddyPress Version 1.2.7
====================
I have an extended profile with 5 groups of information fields. If a user is created in the admin or in the signup page, they are able to go to their profile, and click the “edit profile” link which points to http://www.domain.com/members/username/profile/edit and it WILL redirect automatically to http://www.domain.com/members/username/profile/edit/group/1 and allow for normal editing.
The problem is this: I have imported 3800 users into the database directly with what I believe is all the proper fields filled in, but when those users try to click on “EDIT PROFILE” the redirect to http://www.domain.com/members/username/profile/edit/group/1 doesn’t work and it sends them to the home page.
nahummadrid has the right idea.
The skeleton component is a plugin example to send a user a “high-five” to another user:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-skeleton-component/
It might not work, but give it a shot.
In the green bar under the main slider area on the home page, there are thumbnails for “sub-featured” posts. You are supposed to be able to hover over it to see the title. When buddypress template pack is enabled, this no longer works. Our URL is: http://northernidahotravel.com/. You can see how it works in the theme demo here: http://themeforest.net/item/wave-a-video-centric-theme-for-wordpress/full_screen_preview/45855
Any help would be appreciated.
No, I use original BuddyPress version. But my WP is non-English.
I was trying to find out how to increase memory, and some people say that it’s possible to change in wp-settings.php. I went through this file, and found the following line
// Set initial default constants including WP_MEMORY_LIMIT, WP_DEBUG, WP_CONTENT_DIR and WP_CACHE.
wp_initial_constants( );
Maybe I can set the memory_limit using this function? In this case, what values should I use?
Thanx
It sounds like you are trying to use BuddyPress with a version of WordPress less than 3.0. For a few months now, BuddyPress has required WP 3.0 or greater.
In your FTP client, navigate to the wp-content/plugins folder. Delete the buddypress folder. Then go to yoursite.com/wp-admin, and things should be back to life. You will have to upgrade to the latest WP before attempting to install BuddyPress again.
Thanks a bunch for all your feedback @hnla . With regards to the suspected DNS/Domain issue, do you know how we could go about putting this to the test?
I’m glad to hear that our hardware is likely be at the root of this issue, because then it’s very manageable.
Extra note: We might try out some of the techniques covered here:
Child themes work like this: Say you have a house and you want it to look different, you would then buy paint and furniture and curtains to make it loo different but the walls and roof and floors still look he same and are in the same place. The parent theme is the walls and floors and those never change.
Basically the child theme is a way to tell word press to use all the files from a theme but make certain changes you want in a separate theme that way the parent theme files are never changed. If you do need to change one of the parent files then you copy that file over to the child folder and it will override the parent file.
header.php in a child theme folder will override header.php in the parent theme folder. Make a mistake? No biggie you can just copy the parent header.php over to the child theme again since you never edit the parent files.

hey guys sorry im so late on responding back, i started to lose hope on getting feedback since everywhere else i went for help (suffusion support forum never respond to any of my help post, wordpress.org at least someone was nice enough to direct me here) was pretty much pointless. but anyway i decided to dump the suffusion theme because i figured there wasnt any point in using a theme that didnt have much of dependable support forum and bought the platform pro theme and so far not only am i impressed but i realize u get what you pay for (free has its limits).
i looked into what @youlichika said and http://site/groups/create/ takes you directly to the create page that i thought no longer existed. so i went thru my cpanel file manager and edited bp-groups.php and at line 155 i added this:
bp_core_new_subnav_item( array( ‘name’ => __( ‘Create’, ‘buddypress’ ), ‘slug’ => ‘create’, ‘parent_url’ => $groups_link, ‘parent_slug’ => $bp->groups->slug, ‘screen_function’ => ‘groups_screen_group_create’, ‘position’ => 50, ‘user_has_access’ => ‘groups-create’ ) );
and i got the create a group tab added next to invites, its not perfect but it gets the job done. im going to do the same thing for events and let you guys know how it turns out. thanks again everybody for replying to my post i found exactly what i was looking for and im more than happy to share what ive learnd hoping to help the next person being ignored from other forums lol
I added the line to my functions.php as suggested. The login link (wp-login.php?action=register) redirects to the home page now. The WP login works fine, though.
I’ve deactivated all plugins except the BP core. Made sure I’m not logged in, and cache/cookies have been cleared out.
Anything else I should check?
Greatly appreciate the assistance…
We use buddypress for collaboration at work. We are a nonprofit who serve the poorest communities in Dallas. We take tons of calls from people needing assistance on various areas. Buddypress allows us to share ideas and comment about the ongoings of our mission.
On our phone system, If someone misses a call (it’s forwarded to a google voice number that rings multiple people) we want the email google voice creates to create a topic in the buddypress forum so we can follow up. Right now, it creates posts on WordPress, which doesn’t have the flexibility of a forum post. Any ideas?
I have just read this article and have been very excited about it. I searched for WP Symposium on the Buddypress forum and found nothing.
I think this could be interesting for others as well
Have someone tried WP Symposium? I like to know what you all think about it.
Is it a real alternative or can become one?
Plugin:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-symposium/
wpmu article 1
http://wpmu.org/introducing-wp-symposium-an-exciting-buddypress-alternative/
and 2
http://wpmu.org/buddypress-alternative-wp-symposium-is-fast-approaching-a-release-candidate/
Thank you, I will try that. Should I expect to encounter any problems with account creation? When I was searching I found a post that indicated there might be such issues, but it was from several months ago.
Or, as an alternative, I want a Register page that does the following:
– Option to use Janrain Engage
– uses reCAPTCHA or an arithmetic challenge
– forces minimum password length and displays password strength/match
– Shows disclaimer text, with option to require users check box to Accept Agreement
– Shows privacy policy text, with option to require users check box to Accept Agreement
– sends customized activation email to non-Janrain registrations
– sends customized username/password email to non-Janrain registrations
I have all of this capability now, just not with BuddyPress.
If anyone knows of an existing solution for doing this with the BP login and registrations, that is fine, too.
Thanks
If you want to disable BP’s registration and user account activation pages: In your functions.php or in a custom plugin:
`remove_action( ‘wp’, ‘bp_core_screen_signup’, 3 );`
Hi!
I’m wondering what would be a simple way to have the registration link go to the regular WP registration form, rather than the BuddyPress page?
I’ve customized the registration process using the following plugins:
– Janrain Engage
– Register Plus Redux
– Theme My Login
Seems to work OK so far (though there are some very minor wrinkles to iron out). That is to say that users who are created via Janrain or the WP register page can still login and update their profiles when a BuddyPress theme is enabled.
I just want the Login and Register links to go to the wp-login.php version, not redirect to the BP version. Thanks!
hi,
tried to search internet for wordpress/buddypress themes protection. Actually, haven’t found anything valuable, except protection of zip files of themes.
Idea is to not to allow any visitor to steal my child theme/css. As you know, at the moment you can see css of most bp sites by simple inspecting in Firebug of Firefox or Chrome.
Question is, does any of BP professionals has some tricks to protect themes or not?
e.g. on myspace firebug shows that css is under copyright, I believe, most internet monsters have important protection, but is there any simple way for the beginner?
thank you.
Sorry for the delay. It will be in your theme’s folder. If you are using the BP default theme then it will be in: your_wordpress_folder/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default
If you are using this then it will probably be worth creating a child theme so that you don’t loose any changes with plugin upgrades. If that is what you want to do then I can give you some help there too.
I know that $wpdb->get_var("SELECT COUNT(*) FROM $wpdb->users;"); can select wordpress user by mysql, but when I call a buddypress group, it failed, nothing return $wpdb->get_var("SELECT COUNT(*) FROM $wpdb->bp_groups;"); Is there anyone know how to?
Found solution on my buddypress site – This drove me crazy
.. My clients wanted ‘Profile’ to show first when their link was clicked on. OK, makes sense for this site.
1. Did not work: This method broke my buddydress theme in IE (but not Mozilla) – adding ‘define(‘BP_DEFAULT_COMPONENT’,’profile’); ‘ to bp-custom.php and uploading it to /wp-content/plugins. .. useless for me.
2. Worked – adding ‘define(‘BP_DEFAULT_COMPONENT’,’profile’);’ to my wp-config.php file (up top, above – ‘// ** MySQL settings – You can get this info from your web host ** //’) – UREEKA BABY!!
I’m using buddypress 1.2.7 , buddydress themes and wordpress 3.0.4 – Hope this helps someone..
I’m not sure if this is a WP issue or BP issue. I have all users set as contributors, but some users are able to publish directly to the site. Most end up as “pending.”
I’m using WordPress MU 2.9.2. with BP 1.2.3 – I’m wary of upgrading either or both b/c I don’t know if my theme can take it. Would upgrading even fix the problem?
Site is http://www.selfpublishingreview.com
@theartillerist do you mean you’re still using WPMU 2.9.2 or do you mean you installed WP 3.0.4 and created a network – multisite? In any case, you do not create a physical subdirectory with a .com at the end because all subdirectories and subdomains created with WP multisite are all virtual. You should read or re-read Create a Network.
After installing WP at domain root, create a network then use the domain mapping plugin so that a new domain name e.g. theartillerist.com, would be pointed to domain root so it can be retrieved in subsite.
Before installing BuddyPress, do resolve all installation and configuration issues including domain mapping at WP.org multisite forums – https://wordpress.org/support/forum/multisite
