Most likely after the release of bbpress as a plugin then people will start looking into ways to enhance the forums. This is probably first quarter 2011.
I’ve installed WP3 at mysite.com. I then installed multisite, and created a new site at site1.mysite.com. I then installed the BuddyPress plugin, and activated the BP Default theme at site1.mysite.com. Everything looks great, except that all the links in the admin bar point to mysite.com, not site1.mysite.com, therefore breaking all the links. Example: mysite.com/members/ doesn’t work, because BuddyPress is actually installed at site1.mysite.com/members/.
Its also worth mentioning that I’m using the Domain Mapping Plugin (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping/) to map site1.mysite.com to a completely separate domain, like http://www.awesomesitename.com, although I don’t think this is effecting the links in BuddyPress’ admin bar.
I started digging around in BuddyPress to see where these links are coming from, specifically in bp-core-adminbar.php at the bp_core_admin_bar() function, and then searching for the bp_adminbar_menus action, though I didn’t turn up any results.
I figured I’d ask here before I go mucking with core files.
In one of my WordPress BuddyPress installations http://bouw.fnv.net/
Dashboard – Design – Themes – reflects as the active theme the default site (BuddyPress) theme and NOT the real active theme. In all wpblogs/wp-admin, except of course in the root/blog – How to repair?
Header change doesnt work, only changing of the default root site header possible. Part of the same problem, I thinik
PJ – Check out Heavy Analytics – http://heavyanalytics.com. It is a plugin that we are developing for this purpose. The purpose of the plugin is to give you actionable information about your WordPress/BuddyPress users. For example, it will help you figure out who the leaders in your community are, who the most active members of your community are, etc.
We will be releasing the public Alpha soon and would love to have you test it out and provide some feedback when it is ready! Just enter your email address into the sidebar of the Heavy Analytics site.

I don’t know of anyone who has integrated punBB and BP. Here’s a plugin to share logins between the two systems: http://www.rkblog.rk.edu.pl/w/p/punbb-and-wordpress-integration-plugin/. The group-level management stuff would probably have to be custom coded.
I’m not aware of anyone who has integrated a different forum software into BP that will meet your list of criteria, though maybe someone else in this forum has.
I’ve tried to change some labels using language files as explained in the Buddypress docs. Whatever I do the changes just don’t happen. I’ve also tried with this plugin:
http://www.code-styling.de/english/development/wordpress-plugin-codestyling-localization-en
but the changes don’t work with that either.
I’m wondering if anybody would know if the issue may be to do with having my site in a folder off the root directory? If so are there things I should have done that might be causing the problem?
You can’t run BP on a wordpress.com site.
You would need to install your own copy of WP on your own domain and then install and activate BP.
i have downloaded buddy press n i dont know where to upload that..
my site is http://friendlyfeel.wordpress.com
where i can find this
/wp-content/plugins/ folder.
where i can get plugin option in word press.. plz tell me..
This is more a WordPress question rather than a BuddyPress one – https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL – remember to back up your database first
Basically the answer is no. You can’t have multiple blogs unless you either have WordPress MU or WordPress MS. WordPress Single will still run BuddyPress but it won’t have any blogs.

BuddyPress forums are group based by default, so you could set each group up to be an office and each office would get its own forum. It would all come together on the forums directory. From what you wrote it doesn’t sound like you’ll be needing all the social networking that ships with BP, so WP MS (setting offices up as blogs) and a standalone forum (without BP) might be better suited to your needs.
I use multisite to create and maintain several sites, all with the same design and content structure, but for different locations. I would like to have a forum that all the offices share, so that all topics, moderators, users would have access to the same content no matter what site they are on.
I don’t want them to have to leave their site to get to the forum. It sounds like Buddy Press will do exactly what I’m looking for. Comments? Thanks.
Ok. So my host is Bluehost, and the primary domain on my account is saltbored.com. I have an addon domain sdcityrobotics.org pointing to where my single wordpress with buddypress install is located -publichtml/sdcityrobotics.
I need the site url to always begin with sdcityrobotics as the domain…. examples:
http://www.sdcityrobotics.org/activity
http://www.sdcityrobotics.org/members
http://www.sdcityrobotics.org/groups
etc.
The site breaks if I set the WordPress “General Settings” addresses to anything other than:
WordPress Address (URL): http://www.saltbored.com/sdcityrobotics
Site Address (URL): http://www.saltbored.com/sdcityrobotics
What should the domain configuration be, to change the sites url structure to what I identified above instead of:
Home: http://www.saltbored.com/sdcityrobotics/
http://www.saltbored.com/sdcityrobotics/activity/
http://www.saltbored.com/sdcityrobotics/members/
hello I havent installed buddpyress on wordpress mu.Can I still allow my members to create blogs? If yes how and will I have disadvantages ?
Hi @netweblogic. First requirement is that people can post events from the frontend, second is being able to set privacy levels for the events – public, for members only, etc, third is that at least one map can be attached to the event, etc. etc. etc. There are already a couple of feature-rich BuddyPress events plugins in the WP repo:
EventPress – https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/eventpress/
Jet Event System – https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/jet-event-system-for-buddypress/
Good luck.
looks like the group is private – so buddypress will redirect back to the main page (if someone is not a member)
Hey thanks but still does not seem to work or I’m communicating my question. When I add a new page to our wordpress site I pasted a link into the html body. The menu for the site now has “forum” but it always redirect me to the wordpress generic forum link not the buddypress group forum.
Desired link:
`gwspacesociety.rog/groups/students/forum/#post-new`
The resulting link:
Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
Hi, new to all this. Using WordPress 3.0.1. I’m a Peace Corp volunteer in Moldova. We’re doing a youth project with 20 different communities around the country where each group will create a blog and every individual blog post will appear on the main site page.
Tried using the plugin Community Blogs but it didn’t appear to be functioning. Then, I think I figured out a way to accomplish this using MU Sitewide Tags. But just when I thought I had it working…
I can’t access any of the sample blogs I’ve created. I get redirected to a default website page or i get error messages like:
The server can not find the requested page:
/wp-login.php (port 80)
Please forward this error screen to node01.tmdhosting940.com’s WebMaster.
or
Fatal error: Call to undefined function bp_has_groups() in /home/cetateni/public_html/wp-content/plugins/bp-group-management/bp-group-management-bp-functions.php on line 73
Any help regarding why I can no longer access any blog or what plug in is best to accomplish multiple blogs feeding into one would be greatly appreciated.
Thks
Hi Everyone,
I’ve mentioned this before so some of the regulars here may remember this, but I’m currently collaborating with Davide Benini on the Events Manager plugin (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/events-manager/) and we’ve just finished a major rewrite of the code, which will allow us now to make some seriously needed upgrades. The plugin is pretty stable now and we’re planning on extending it further. One thing we’re going to do over the next few weeks is make this work with buddypress so that users can manage their own events. If people have any ideas on specific features in the buddypress department, we’re open to suggestions!
I plan to install BP but I would be grateful for a comparison of what additional functionality visitors to my site would have if I also enabled multisite. I understand that MU in effect turns a site into a sort of wrdpress.com in the making, with visitors able to create their own blogs. But the home page of this site states that with BP you can “allow each of your users to start their own full powered WordPress blog.” So BP alone will let my visitors “start their own full-powered WordPress blog” or does that also require MU? Is there a comparison anywhere of what a BP site can provide, with and without MU enabled?
Thanks
Well, I think I got the locations figured out … buttons are showing up on the General Settings section of the profile. Here’s what I did:
For Facebook
`add_action(‘bp_template_content’,’sfc_login_profile_page’,50); //Simple Facebook Connect account link function`
For Twitter
`add_action(‘bp_template_content’,’stc_login_profile_page’,51); //Simple Twitter Connect account link function`
I’d have to work with style a bit but, hey, they’re where they ought to be! That’s not the end of the story though. On the wordpress profile, you’ll see options to disconnect from the remote account (Facebook or Twitter) but these options don’t show up on the bp profile.
Seems like running both the Twitter and Facebook connect simultaneously gets a bit buggy. If linked to twitter for example, the facebook link button won’t click through.
Also, after linking accounts you have to sign out of buddypress multiple times (if you initially signed in with your buddypress login, then again with eg. your facebook account).
All this is making me think twice about putting SFC and STC to use in my system even though it looks like a sweet and full featured integration. I’m sure some one with a little more skill could make it work. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
Thanks for the link Rolly. Any thoughts on modifying the WordPress login page. Can one create a login page vs. using the stock page?
Thanks,
James
