In reply to: Is it possible to do it in WP + BP?
Slava Abakumov
ModeratorYes, I meant exactly that. WP+BP (with a really low number of plugins without a network activated) will produce up 100 DB queries + up to 60 Mb php memory usage. And sometimes even more. Network activated plugins will make those figures even more. In case you have thousands of users… shared hosting will die, all the time.
I suggest at least VDS/VPS.

ParticipantOkay, the problem is back.
When I activated WP Super Cache it showed up again.
On Dashboard, “Incoming Links” and “Plugins” both show this error: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 67108864 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 491520 bytes) in /home/cgoegan/public_html/livingcm.org/wp-includes/SimplePie/Misc.php on line 843
I tested the cache in WP Super Cache and it said
The pages do not match! Timestamps differ or were not found!
Things you can do:
-
Load your homepage in a logged out browser, check the timestamp at the end of the html source. Load the page again and compare the timestamp. Caching is working if the timestamps match.
-
Enable logging on the Debug page here. That should help you track down the problem.
-
You should check Page 1 and Page 2 above for errors. Your local server configuration may not allow your website to access itself.
So I tried that and they are different. One is:
http://livingcm.org/wp-login.php?redirect_to=/
and the other is:
The reason is because I have a private site and unregistered users are directed to a different page than the home page.
Any idea how to fix this without removing the privacy that I need for the site. Does this occur with everyone who has a different registration page and home page?

Participant@modemlooper I installed BP (not activated yet) but the article is kinda vague for my next step. The article on step (1) says: https://codex.buddypress.org/user/install-buddypress-on-a-secondary-blog/
In order to run Buddypress on a secondary blog, you should create a second blog and modify BuddyPress’ internal settings to set your new blog as the BP root blog.
Next, define the ‘root’ blog you would like BuddyPress to reside at by adding the code snippet below to wp-config.php
I created my bp-custom under wp-content/plugins/ but should I add this “define ( ‘BP_ROOT_BLOG’, $blog_id );” in my wp-config.php or in bp-custom.php? or both?
Please help.

ParticipantI got this site after my predecessor, so I wasn’t involved in the decision process.
Who cares !
Latest stable BP is version 1.6.3 and yes combining slightly different things is not the best practice.
Recommandation is to use it on WP 3.5
Read here in the sidebar:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress/BP 1.5.2 required at least WP 3.3 (déc. 2011)
changelog https://codex.wordpress.org/Version_3.3
changelog https://codex.wordpress.org/Version_3.4
changelog https://codex.wordpress.org/Version_3.5Also what theme do you use and have you deactivated all plugins while debugging ?
Passwword management is done by WPAnyway, you need to fix WP registering first on twenty10, than together with BP on the bp-default theme

Make sure WordPress is up and running by making a post, a page, a comment and adding media via media upload. Then activate BP.

Participanthi @mindyjoy,
@boonebgorges did a nice plugin a few time back who exactly does what you ask for.
Unconfirmed ! https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/unconfirmed/i use it to remove automatic spammers from my db but you can also resend activation e-mails or do it mnually (need a trusted relation to e-mail address and.or username i guess).

ParticipantDoes anyone have a solution for this? I am facing the same problem. Some new users are not receiving the activation email. It is not going to their spam folders. I estimate about every 5th user does not get the email. I can tell who doesn’t receive the email because their Forum Role is blank. Is there a way to generate and re-send the activation email, or manually activate these users? Thank you.

Did you manage to make it work?
I’m facing the same problem. User signs up, sees the ‘Sign Up Complete!’ screen, but no email is sent.
The only plugin I’m using is ‘BuddyPress’
January 16, 2013 at 2:20 am #150782In reply to: I want Buddypress to work within a template
@mercime
Participantthe Valor template was deactivated, and Buddypress became my site template
Probably because when you went through the installation wizard at Step 4, you clicked Save without noticing that the button was checked for BP Default theme https://codex.buddypress.org/user/setting-up-a-new-installation/installation-wizard/#step-4-choose-theme-to-use-for-your-bp-install
Just go to Appearance > Themes to select your WP theme, then install/activate the BP Template Pack plugin, and finally go through Appearance > BP compatibility process.

@mercime
ParticipantThe AUthor role should be able to update posts whether BP is activated or not. More info on about the user/Author would be good.
– Did such user/Author register in your site and you promoted the registered user’s role to Author
– OR Did you add the user directly from wp-admin and set role to Author?Do you have a single WP install with multi-user authors or are you on a multisite installation with that user added as Author to a site?

Participanthi @ngoegan,
you have problems ? Me too ! But what kind of problems ? It’s not working as you expect is not really ” a problem” i guess….
You can’t find a register page ! Huh , because User registration is currently not allowed. It’s written here: http://livingcm.org/register/
Go to BP setting and show if you created all the pages needed by BP espacially “register” and “activate”. This must be done. If pages are OK, check “Anyone can register” from here /wp-admin/options-general.php
How to do you set up your homepage ? Did you something like a static page or so ?
Have you changed a slug somewhere ?Have you also changed the permalinks from default to something else ? Must be done to use correctly BP : D
December 27, 2012 at 11:56 pm #149063In reply to: Duplicate Roles
John James Jacoby
KeymasterHi JP,
You’re right, that it’s all a bit confusing right now. It sounds like some part of the update script didn’t run, as it would normally remove the duplicate roles.
Having multiple roles is a bbPress specific feature, that BuddyPress will likely adopt to some small extent in 2013. The basic goal is to *not* have 1 dropdown with a bunch of roles in it, restricting users to having 1 set of capabilities. Since no site is the same, and no user will always have all/some/none caps, being able to have multiple roles is pretty critical.
In BuddyPress, it’s less-so, because we assume all users can do all things in BuddyPress, and have purpose built restrictions in place for super administrators.
You should be able to safely remove the duplicate and bbPress roles with some calls to
remove_role(). bbPress 2.x adds its roles dynamically at run-time, and only on the site it’s activated on. Visiting the Users list in wp-admin for that site should show you the columns you describe.December 27, 2012 at 12:57 am #148973In reply to: No BuddyPress Admin Bar
@mercime
Participant@willusername after you activate BuddyPress, you have to go through the Installation Wizard https://codex.buddypress.org/user/setting-up-a-new-installation/installation-wizard/
Complete the process first before installing/activating BP Template pack plugin for WP theme compatibility with BP.
Re no admin bar, check if your theme’s footer.php file has the
wp_footercall right before the closing body and html tagsDecember 20, 2012 at 1:21 am #148195In reply to: [Resolved] Harmony Theme Compatibilty
@mercime
Participant@slkmclaren deactivate BuddyPress, change to WP default theme and check if you can register a new user i.e., email is working. Depending on webhost, you might need to install a mail plugin. Best to start a new topic on this issue.
EDIT – If emails aren’t working if BP is activated, check out “BuddyPress isn’t sending out emails (eg. activation emails, email notifications)” section in this page https://codex.buddypress.org/user/faq/
December 17, 2012 at 9:19 am #147617In reply to: How to add custom $usermeta to registration
manohark
ParticipantHi Everyone,
Here is the solution on half part of the saving custom value in the user meta table:
/* Add sign-up field to BuddyPress sign-up array */
function bp_custom_user_signup_field( $usermeta ) {
$usermeta[‘expertise’] = $_POST[‘expertise’];
return $usermeta;
}add_filter( ‘bp_signup_usermeta’, ‘bp_custom_user_signup_field’ );
/* Add field_name from sign-up to usermeta on activation */
function setMeta($user_id, $password, $meta)
{
global $wpdb;
$signup_tbl = $wpdb->prefix.”signups”;
$users_tbl = $wpdb->prefix.”users”;//Query to get the custom field store in the signup table here I have set it to expertise
$metadata = $wpdb->get_var(“SELECT meta FROM “.$signup_tbl.” WHERE user_login=(SELECT user_login FROM $users_tbl WHERE ID=”.$user_id.”)”);$user_exprts = unserialize($metadata);
update_usermeta( $user_id, ‘expertise’, $user_exprts[‘expertise’] );
}
add_action( ‘wpmu_activate_user’, ‘setMeta’, 10, 3);December 17, 2012 at 5:43 am #147600In reply to: WPMS stand alone plus multisite?
@mercime
ParticipantMaybe I’m misunderstanding what WPMS with BP gives me so figured I’d ask here.
Create a Network, make sure that user and blog creation is enabled in network options and test that you can indeed create subsites. When all is in working order with your WPMS install, you can then install and activate BuddyPress.
One other thing that has been perplexing me is trying to find information showing how a user could either set up their blog when registering or, be able to set up their blog later on if they have already become a registered user.
If you allow user account and blog creation as I mentioned above, then the default registration will show fields for blog(subsite) creation. If you want your users to be able to create a blog only after registration, then you remove the blog creation test/fields in the register.php file. The Create a Blog link will show up in the Blogs Directory page for logged in users.

ParticipantFirst function adds code to meta in wp-signups works fine.
Second function should get this meta which is does however i cant access anything inside it using the likes of $signup[‘meta’] or $signup[‘$user_id’]
add_filter( 'bp_signup_usermeta', 'custom_add_signup_meta' );
function custom_add_signup_meta ($meta)
{
// create an array of custom meta fields
$meta['user_blogs'] = $_POST['blogs'];if($meta != null)
{
return $meta;
}}
add_filter( 'bp_core_activate_account', 'add_user_to_blogs');
function add_user_to_blogs($signup)
{
global $bp, $wpdb;
$role = 'bbp_participant';echo 'ALL = '.print_r($signup).'';
foreach ($signup['meta']['user_blogs'] as $key => $value )
{
//Stuff
}}
Any ideas?
When i output $signup i get an array within ‘WP_Error Object’
December 5, 2012 at 5:57 am #146563In reply to: How to manage users & their extended profiles?
doncgarner
ParticipantHI, I am a recent transfer website owner from ning.com. I have a community there, and i’m moving this weekend to the WP platform. I have many questions, that I can’t really seem to find the specific answers to. The plug-in that this user spoke of (The features and more) can buddypress really manage a social community like the ning platform, and what about other features? Here’s what the user wrote:
@boonebgorges thanks for your response and plugin link, in terms of functionality it is almost exactly what I need, only:
– Need it to manage users instead of groups
– Need it to show their full profile fields (including xprofile)
– Need options to deactivate(very important) or delete users
– Need function to export list to excel sheetI need similar functions in a plug-in and need to know whats the BEST plugin or what combination of plug-ins will give me the features for a membership community that I want, members want, and that are essentially need to maintain a viable members community. Here is what I need as far as features and functionality:
-Secured membership registration and login seprate from WP admin. So members CAN’T access the backend of my admin panel.
-After they join they are sent to their members profile page to add a bio, photos, videos, music, etc..and everything post in their profile page, and in the community videos, photos, and music display like on a youtube page or gallery style. I also, need profiles that look more custom instead of simple layouts or designs. This is a BIG problem we had with our ning platform. Wish we could offer up to 6 or more profile page templates for members to choose from, complete with comments and a better layout for uploaded videos, photos, music (In a player on profile.)
-Members display in a four/five accross…four/five down style grid instead of up and down like a list.
-Search for members, based on attributes or career choice or find all member in a certain category.
-Want a upload feature on whatever page or place I designate for members to upload content like videos, music, photos.
-Add paywalls on whatever page I need to, for the purpose of selling premium content to members.
-Add featured profile/members and delete/block members at will.
-Don’t want to use multisite plug in if I don’t half to. Rater not use it.
Any help here, or a push in the right direction with plug-ins for buddypress please let me know. Thanks in advance good people. Blessings.

ParticipantWe are in the process of launching lots of independent network sites using single install of BP/WPMultisite and have already bought hosting, theme etc. All the sites will have their own unique domains but will share the user base. I am also going to use BP-Multi-network and Networks+ plugin.
But my host WPEngine just warned/advised that they have activated wildcard for subdomains but it may cause problems.
So what does it mean?
If my primary site is for example: MyDomain.com
And the other sites on the same install are My2ndDomain.com and My3rdDomain.com and so on……
Can I have the following withOUT any problems:
Subdomain1.MyDomain.com
Dancing.MyDomain.comSubdomain1.My2ndDomain.com
Dancing.My2ndDomain.comSubdomain1.My3rdDomain.com
Dancing.My3rdDomain.comThank you.

Participant@maineyak No it’s not blank
Curious, what browser are you using? You’re the second one who mentioned that codex page/s are blank. Answer posted.In some server environments, installation of BuddyPress can lead to blank pages. A great source for troubleshooting this problem is the error logs.
Memory Limit
Increasing the available memory may fix the blank page problem. Three methods are available for increasing the memory limit.
php.ini
If possible, increase the memory limit within the php.ini file.
wp-config.php
If possible, increase the memory limit in the wp-config.php file by adding define ('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '64M');.
.htaccess
If possible, add the following to the .htaccess file: php_value memory_limit 256M
talk to your host
If you cannot resolve increasing memory with the fixes above, it means that your hosting provider prevents increases in memory limits. Contact tech support right away. Some hosting providers might require you to upgrade your plan or pay extra.
clear your browser cache or try another browser
After increasing memory, be sure to clear your browser cache. Also, troubleshoot multiple browsers and multiple user roles (subscriber, author, admin, etc.)November 16, 2012 at 6:40 pm #145154@mercime
ParticipantDefinitely something’s awry.
– Deactivate all plugins except BuddyPress and check if issue is resolved. If not,
– Have you tried re-uploading BuddyPress manually to wp-content/plugins/ i.e., via FTP/cpanel/etc.?November 16, 2012 at 4:20 pm #145141In reply to: Edit bp-members-functions.php to include Username

After this:
`
$message = apply_filters( ‘bp_core_signup_send_validation_email_message’, $message, $user_id, $activate_url );
`Put this:
global $wpdb;$username = $wpdb->get_var( “SELECT user_login FROM $wpdb->users WHERE ID = $user_id” );
$message .= ” Your user name for log-in is ” . $username;

Famous
ParticipantSo from the explanation of both @modemlooper & @mercime the understanding in minimal terms is the following:
Every BP page I drop into my WP child template will override the core file as it does presently. And in order to create my page I simply drop in shortcodes to develop my page.php, then I apply my CSS to style & design my page. Question – are there already shortcodes in place that I can create a page.php with?Please explain what @r-a-y is saying with using user_nicename. Why would someone want to create a template for a specific user?
`/wp-content/themes/twentytwelve/buddypress/members/single/home-{user_nicename}.php`and how would you do that without making a huge mess in your template directory?
Also this would explain how to create different templates for different groups?
For instance:
`/wp-content/themes/twentytwelve/buddypress/members/single/home-{group ID = 1}.php`Is that correct?
Using these files one could create their own fully templated BP site?:
`’activity/index’‘blogs/index’
‘blogs/create’‘registration/activate’
‘registration/register’/* Ignore these
‘forums/single/forum’
‘forums/single/topic’
‘forums/index’
*/‘members/index’
‘members/single/activity/permalink’
‘members/single/home’
‘members/single/settings/capabilities’
‘members/single/settings/delete-account’
‘members/single/settings/general’
‘members/single/settings/notifications’‘groups/create’
‘groups/index’
‘groups/single/home’
‘groups/single/plugins’`October 20, 2012 at 6:13 pm #143744Norm
ParticipantI just found this plugin that maybe the solution you are looking for.
