MemberAnd the solution is….? Because…?
What’s the point of installing bbpress through BuddyPress if we cannot use it? The forum tab works but since there are no forums I cannot create any topics.
Should we install bbpress separatly to be able to use it at all?

ParticipantBetter would be to use, the lite version (since this is already configured with buddypress), but if your looking for the old forums way, then you’ll have to install bbpress seperately and tweak it to get the buddypress looks.
I personally have both groups and normal forums, now I’m looking for a way to get the buddypress functions in bbpress.

KeymasterThe data in the database is safe, but you’d go back to the old “deep integration” method of making them look and play nicely together. You could either rename the DB tables to use the bb_ prefix instead of wp_bp_, or you could specify wp_bp_ as the custom prefix during reinstallation of bbPress.
Then you’d go the same old route of using the integration plugins to share cookies, etc.
Your question also depends on whether or not you’re going to keep group forums. If yes, then group forums already know which forum_id they’re linked to, and BuddyPress will continue to use its own internal bbPress to write to and read from the DB, while your separate installation will be the one that works for your “forum root.” If you choose to ditch group forums, then you’ll want to visit your bbPress site-admin and rearrange and change your forum settings and descriptions to make more sense.

KeymasterThis is something I’ve been pondering about myself.
It really depends on your community’s needs and how you anticipate growth.
If you like how buddypress.org has their forums, then you’d want a separate install of bbPress.
If you anticipate that you’d want other forums besides the ones created by groups, then you’d want a separate install of bbPress.
If you want more administrative control over your forums (moderation, plugins), then you’d want a separate install.
If you like the fact that forums are only created within the Groups infrastructure, then go with a “new install”. Positives about this approach is you wouldn’t have to modify your BP template often, whereas going with a separate install requires you to create a new bbPress template to match the rest of your site.

I have a question for the BP devs: let’s say I go with the new, integrated forum approach and want to switch back to my old, separate install… I’d probably have to restore a database backup as well as a backup of my files right?

ParticipantSince I brought it up here: I found the problem. I upgraded from 1.0.3 to 1.1.1 the easy button-clicking way. It did not delete the old theme-files. When I deleted them, my forums started working like they should.

ParticipantI’m having the same problem. I will provide as MUCH information as I can per the list.
Website here: http://test.risdarchitecture.net
I’ve moved the BP themes to the wp-content/themes directory.
This is the third clean install of WPMU and BP (including new SQL database, etc).
I host with 1and1, so I’ve had to add a .htaccess file to the root directory to change to php5.
1. Which version of WPMU are you running? WordPress MU 2.8.4
2. Did you install WPMU as a directory or subdomain install? Directory
3. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory? It is in the root, however the root URL itself is a subdirectory.
4. Did you upgraded from a previous version of WPMU? If so, from which version? No.
5. Was WPMU functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress? Yes.
6. Which version of BuddyPress (BP) are you running? Version 1.1.2
7. Did you upgraded from a previous version of BP? If so, from which version? No.
8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated? No.
9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes? Yes.
10. Have you modified the core files in any way? No.
11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php? No.
12. If running bbPress, which version? Or did your BuddyPress install come with a copy of bbPress built-in? BP came with an install of bbPress installed (I think).
13. Please provide a list of any errors in your server’s log files. My site is hosted by 1and1. I don’t think they provide log files.
Please help! I’ve read and read this forum and there doesn’t seem to be a definitive solution anywhere.

ParticipantBrajesh – sorry for being “stupid” but I did “use existing bbpress installation” and I got the message that it worked but BuddyPress would now use its own version of bbPress so I could delete everything except bb-config.php.
In addition my forums are now at mysite.com/blogs/forums

You can use the existing/stand alone bbpress instllation.
from the backend buddypress->forum setup->use existing bbpress installtion.
Now if you have installed the buddypress on the root domain, and you want the url
yoursite.com/forums for standalone bbpress forum,You will have to make some changes.
Since with bp 1.1 yoursite.com/forums is used as the forum directory, you need to change that forum slug or install bbpress at some other url,say yoursite.com/some-forum

KeymasterIf I set a forum in a hiddend BuddyPress group it will be hidden in BBPress too?.
@sacom, not necessarily.
Look into Burt Adsit’s bp Groups plugin:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bpgroups/
This is what I’m using on BP < 1.1 (yeah I know I got to play catch-up!)
I’m not sure how compatible it is with BP 1.1+…

ParticipantThank you Brajesh for your reply.
One question more… so If I do that, installing a separate BBPress, the group forums of BuddyPress will be available in my standalone BBPress?
If I set a forum in a hiddend BuddyPress group it will be hidden in BBPress too?.
Thanks in advance

Keymastertcesco, I recently ported over a version of the more general bbPress attachments plugin by _ck_: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/forum-attachments-for-buddypress/. The downside is that I haven’t yet gotten inline images to work, which means that people can upload and download images but they don’t appear as images in the posts (just downloadable file links). Thus it might not work for your purpose, but it’s worth a look.

ParticipantYes, you are right.
Buddypress allows you to integrate an standalone bbpress installation. To have full control,Install bbpress separately and Integrate it to buddypress.
You will have your buddypress groups with forums enabled with bbpress,as well as the standalone bbpress forum accessible.

ParticipantThanks DJPaul.
So if I like to have more control over forums, maybe I must install a separate BBPress and then integrate it?, or it makes no difference and BuddyPress forums and BBPress will go separately each on his side?

ParticipantThanks for the tip DJPaul!
With the Skeleton Component Plugin I could allready write a simple plugin. But it seems now I have to look how to rewrite this BBPress plugin… I’ll try

KeymasterBBPress plugins won’t work with the method of integration that BuddyPress uses. You will have to port the plugin to work with WPMU and BudyPress or find someone to do it for you.

KeymasterThe regular BBPress administration page isn’t accessible when used with the BuddyPress integration method. This also means that BBPress plugins won’t work.

ParticipantI´ve got exactly the same problem. I´ve got a fresh install of WPMU 2.8.4a and BuddyPress 1.1.1, no separate bbPress as I thought BuddyPress would perform that install for me.
This is what I get:
====
bbPress forum integration in BuddyPress has been set up correctly. If you are having problems you can re-install
NOTE: The forums directory will only work if your bbPress tables are in the same database as your WordPress tables. If you are not using an existing bbPress install you can ignore this message.
====
When I try to post a new topic in any of the forums I get:
“There was an error when creating the topic”
So I guess bbPress isn´t installed after all?

ParticipantDid you choose “Set up a new bbPress installation”” or “Use an existing bbPress installation”?
If you do not need any of the old bbPress content, then I would suggest starting the bbPress integration from scratch. This mean deleting the old and newly-created bbPress tables in the DB, then deleting the bbPress directory from BuddyPress, and then reinstalling the bbPress files. This of course also assumes that the new bbP tables do not yet have any worthwhile data in them.
Next, go back into WPMU’s backend and navigate to “BuddyPress > Forums Setup” and then choose “Set up a new bbPress installation”.
Does that make a difference?

ParticipantI really need a solution to this? Can anyone help me and tell me what exactly I need to do?
1. I do not need the old content . I deleted the old BBPress Installation
2. I need to work the new (“one-click”) forum to work in old groups, where the old forum was activated
What can I do?
THANX

ParticipantAnyone else having the problem driz mentioned here? I also can’t seem to get the new forums directory page working. Have re-done everything I can think of; still just goes to the original kakumei themed bbpress forums page. Is there anything typical anyone knows of that can cause this?

Is this the full and latest build of bbpress, or is it a skimmed down “lite” version that may not be the most recent build?
