    I am just nobody here. But this is how I did it.

    Before installing buddypress i created a page named “group forums” and when installing buddypress forums, assigned it as its sole page. Later seperately installed bbpress. No harm at all

    Doug — the notification will be because I explicitly @mention ‘d you in the reply.

    Yes, the behaviour of these forums is not a good advert for BuddyPress — although some of that is down to the coding of this site, rather than a BuddyPress specific problem.

    Recently, a plugin version of bbPress was released, which significantly improved support for forums on a BuddyPress based site. That gives proper notifications, and the sort of features you’d expect from regular forums. Unfortunately, the alternative ‘group based forums’ as used on this site, really don’t deliver a good experience.

    If you want to customise the twentyten theme, you are best to post on the WordPress.org forums for support. This forum is for BuddyPress-specific questions.

    If you have a totally white page, it’s a PHP fatal error. These are logged to the php/apache log files. Unless you’ve missed them, I have no idea why they might not be appearing.

    Roger, thanks.

    By the by, I did get an email notification telling me of your reply, which is why I am back.

    But I find these forums horrendously slow, and also hard to navigate. Plus it keeps on thinking I’m logged out when I’m not. Is that all buddypress’s problem, or a bbpress issue?

    Thanks,

    doug

    @douglerner

    There are some off the shelf plugins for import from CSV file, but I’ve heard varying reports on whether they work successfully.

    In the cases were we’ve needed it, we built our own custom routines to bulk import users from CSV file into BuddyPress. It could certainly be done for your data set.

    re: your ps. No, there’s no way of receiving notifications. The ‘support forums’ would be far more useful if they were built on traditional forum software.

    @modemlooper could you give an example of one that will work with 1.6?

    Actions are a standard part of WordPress programming – if you check the WordPress.org documentation, or any good book on advanced WordPress PHP development, you should be able to find good guidance.

    @karmatosed. I saw your work at WPMUDEV; I mean how you helped a guy to resolve his buddypress sidebar issue. I was following the tutor but at a point I got hooked up. I thought of joining WPMUDEV immediately and ask you this question, but then again, I am not well equipped financially at the moment. Please if you help me solve this issue out, I will not forget about it so easily. Thanks. Now this is what I have done. FIrstly I added this code in my childtheme functions.php file.

    register_sidebars( 1,
    array(
    'id' => 'leftsidebar',
    'name' => 'Christlike-sidebar',
    'before_widget' => '<div id="%1$s">',
    'after_widget' => '</div>',
    'before_title' => '<h3 class="widgettitle">',
    'after_title' => '</h3>'
    )
    );

    Then I saved it and refreshed my browser in my widgets administration panel. Guess what the sidebar did appear. So I added some widgets into it and saved it. Then I created a new sidebar with a notepad in my child theme and named it Christlike-sidebar.php. Then I added this code into it.

    <div id="leftsidebar">
    </div>

    I learnt from numerous tutorials I read online that you have to add a code to your index.php file to enable the sidebar to appear in my site. I obeyed promptly and added this code:

    immediately below

    I saved everything and refreshed my browser. Damn… nothing appeared. I have read and read and read, searched out for how to do this on Google, Bing, and Yahoo but all my efforts have yielded nothing. Please help me out.

    Again, if there is any developer that knows how best I can achieve this, please help me out. Thanks alot to you all.

    Gabriel.

    Hey guys

    I have read your thread and I had almost same problem just few minutes ago and that is how i found this forum.

    1. Registration problem
    My problem was that my friends were able to register on the website, they got the invite and confirmation emails but when they then clicked on the registration link the got ERROR. I solved it by going to BuddyPress (in the dashbord to the left under General Settings) – Page. There you can see REGISTRATION two options Register and Activate. Make sure the dropdown next to Register says REGISTER and the dropdown next to ACTIVATE says ACTIVATE (Do not mix it with the Activity Streams below otherwise it wont work)

    When changed the dropdown to ACTIVATE it worked and my friends are able to register themselves now. I hope it solved few of your problems.

    2. Sending invite and confirmation emails to your invited friends
    Make sure you install the plug in INVITE-ANYONE under Plugins. Because that plug in together with the registration form works together for sending emails and completing the registration.

    Hope this helps and solves your problems as this is an amazing platform.

    Best
    Jasmine

    Hello fishfinder. Your tutor about this is the best I have seen so far. I have spent countless hours searching on Google, bing, and Yahoo about this. Your tutor indeed is clear but my problem is that I am using the latest version of buddypress, so I am not able to see the locate template stuffs in my single.php file. Please I really do need your help here. If someone else here have found a solution, please help me by droping the link and your help will be well appreciated. Thanks.

    If a site member decides not to add a subject, a rather unhelpful error message is given “There was an error sending that message, please try again”.

    Site members who are used to messaging systems that don’t require a subject wouldn’t think they had to enter a subject every time. Perhaps an error message that tells the user the subject field needs to be completed would be more user friendly?

    Roger,

    Thanks for the update. And yes, I want to to do the second option. My website does not have much activity. The activity stream is used almost like a forum where people post questions or leave comments. However, when someone posts a question, none of the members ever know. So the questions go unanswered. I will look into the action hooks that you mentioned. Are there any tutorials on how to use action hooks?

    Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

    You can use my profile privacy plugin to hide profile sections. Even though it says not supported it still should work. https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-profile-privacy

    Never mind. I deactivated BuddyPress and reactivated it and everything went back to normal. Just one of those unexplainable ‘glitches’, I guess.

    Hello,

    old problem…
    In bp-core/bp-core-functions.php:611
    there is the “ago” filter…
    `$ago_text = apply_filters( ‘bp_core_time_since_ago_text’, __( ‘%s ago’, ‘buddypress’ ) );`
    Replace this to
    `$ago_text = apply_filters( ‘bp_core_time_since_ago_text’, __( ‘%s’, ‘buddypress’ ) );`

    On the dashboard, left hand side you should the BuddyPress option, and under that is ‘pages’. You need to assign a page to each of the designated BuddyPress features in order for anything to show when visiting those pages. You might also want to ensure that the different options you want with your site are active under BuddyPress > Components. Hope that helps.

    Look in your server’s PHP error log and see if you have any messages. You may need to contact your host for support to do this.

    @pawriter – if you go to wordpress.com — the reader shows you latest featured blog posts from the blogs on the site. Which is what the described solution tells you how to achieve using BuddyPress in a multisite install
