hi all,

I was able to add facebook like button to activities (simple facebook script to entry.php). Know experience is that like button in activities slows down www a lot.
Is there any way (where to add script) to have like button only in single view of activity (permalinks)?
think it won’t make so big load on www, but can not understand how to achieve this…tried adding of div (idea was of display:none in list of activities), nothing works. is it possible at all?

anyone?

BuddyPress users are essentially WP users there’s no separation and in this and other respects BP is a plugin running under WP and thus using aspects of WP such as users/signups

Buddypress has extended profiles that can be set in the dashboard under the BP menu there you can add new fields to the base group (base group fields are displayed on the initial signup page) or create new filed groups for anything you like and those will be displayed on the users profile screens and accessed under ‘edit profile’ by the user to complete.

As an admin you are very limited as to what you can set on a users profile, basically being restricted to the capabilities under the WP dashboard ‘users’ and ‘add users’

Got a back and forth convo of reviewers that’s quit comical. They did approve. I think BuddyPress should be an exception but at the same time must use all BuddyPress functions / components and of course pass WordPress theme scan.

The child theme they are questioning is just a CSS file one page template and a funtions file. That should pass 100% but they scan it and it fails 99% because they are scanning against WordPress not BuddyPress

How big is BP? Should it have it’s on theme section in the repo or will the requirement be that it will work as WP theme when BP is switched off? Do we as a community need our own site for free BP child themes? These questions and many more when we come back from this commercial break.

Partly answering my own question, from the default buddypress theme I’ve found that the navigation strip is generated by this bit of code:

Could someone explain a little about how this works? I’ve located bp_get_displayed_user_nav() in the bp-core-templatetags file. I’m not sure about the next line.

No support for child themes in the repo yet, at least not officially. I think a few old reliable ones may be in there as special cases.

Chances are for BP specific child themes to make it into the repo, it would also need to be a WordPress theme that would work just fine without BuddyPress active at all.

These are not errors, but debug notices.

Most of these debug notices have been fixed in the forthcoming version of BuddyPress.

Do you have WP_DEBUG defined?

test.php is not a WordPress page, therefore you need to call WordPress in your custom script before you can use WordPress / BuddyPress functions.

Use the Member Profile Stats plugin:

Deactivate BuddyPress and BP plugins. Run Settings > Permalinks and choose permalink other than default. https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks#Where.27s_my_.htaccess_file.3F and next topic below that is content of htaccess for single WP installation

Resolve WP installation before activating BuddyPress. Also if you plan to allow blogs for your users, create a network i.e. go multisite and resolve any issues before activating BuddyPress.

Well, @hnla might be more insulted when you call that “silly” since she was the one who provided that solution that worked for many people.

Have you changed your database info ever? Changing database info can cause this to happen.

It doesn;t really say what should be there in .htaccess file. Can you point me to some other doc that gives that info.

BTW: I am able to get the main home page but then none of the links work. They give that 404 error.

Ok, I did finally realize that my problem of getting nothing at http://ip.address… was because I my index.php file went missing.

Duh.

But, despite the permalink update and correctly generated .htaccess file, I still don’t have access to posts and pages. Just the home page. BuddyPress isn’t installed yet. This is just the base WP 3.1 install.

Here’s a little bump of requests, and reasons for added user capability management and/or user roles in buddypress. Sorry for the list, but it seems like there is some resistance in the BP community to doing this, while there are many requests for it.

Just a note, If you changed the group slug [via: define( ‘BP_GROUPS_SLUG’, ‘new_slug’ );] you will need to alter this code where it says ‘groups’ to match.

Maybe you can tweak oembed to also do images.

Also what about trying a wp plugin that creates a pop image of image links. Im sure there is something like that out there. Again not the perfect solution but maybe something for now while you sort it out.

Hi Jeff, sorry to reopen this topic, but I think it needs a revisiting.

The ability to easily hook into wp user capabilities and extend them to buddypress user capabilities is useful in several social network contexts. And, I hope buddypress is trying to be a more flexible platform than facebook or twitter since it is an open source platform that developers would like to be robust and scalable. I understand the idea of an egalitarian social network like facebook, etc. However, there are many social contexts in which a hierarchical social network structure might be needed. Furthermore, adding the flexibility to developers as an additional component of buddypress would not complicate it’s egalitarian default settings.

One example of a hierarchical context is an educational institution with Administrators, Professors, Instructors, Teaching Assistants, Students, Prospective Students, Alumni, etc.:

As it is now, there are only bbPress roles within groups (which are needed). However, without the ability to assign capabilities within buddypress outside the scope of groups, it is nearly impossible to create capabilities restrictions such as:

user_may_create_groups
user_may_start_forum
user_may_delete_comment (e.g. spam or inappropriate comments)
user_may_assign_capabilities
and so on.

In particular, the ability to restrict certain users from creating groups has been a topic in many other forums about buddypress. Yet, it hasn’t been well addressed.

Still not fixed.

I did a ground-up uninstall and reinstall of all the components of the LAMP stack:

Uninstall
1) yum remove httpd (preserved my httpd.conf file in the /etc/httpd/conf directory, deleting everything else)
2) yum remove mysql
3) yum remove php
4) deleted everything out of /var/www/html

This puts the server back to its fresh install situation before I ever added any packages. This is a brand new RedHat Enterprise Linux install with nothing else running on it.

Install
1) yum install httpd
2) yum install -y mysql mysql-server
3) yum install -y php php-mysql
4) Copied wordpress files to /var/www/html, which is the DocumentRoot setting in my httpd.conf file, ensuring that chown -R apache:apache and chmod -R 755 on everything, including html directory
5) Restored /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf from backup
6) Started httpd using /sbin/service httpd start. It starts with zero errors. All ok.

I type in http:// followed by the IP address currently standing in for my domain name (as yet undetermined). Earlier in our discussion thread, I used to get the wordpress install script. Now I just get the Apache server test page for RedHat Linux. If I put index.html with “

It Works!

” into /var/www/html, then I see that. If I remove the index.html, I still don’t see the install script starting up. Just that Apache RHEL default test page.

But, if I add /wp-admin to my URL, it DOES go into the install script. That was something I didn’t have to do before. But at least I’m getting this far. So I go through the install and get into the Dashboard.

I immediately go to the Permalinks menu and switch to a different scheme so as to generate the .htaccess file. That works just fine. I then immediately go to test the home page. Nothing but a 404. Earlier in this thread, I at least got the home page when none of the other links worked. Now that doesn’t even work.

This really sucks. I can’t figure out what’s wrong because this server is exactly like other servers our hosting provider has given us for the same thing, and those all work fine. They don’t troubleshoot WordPress installs because, well, they just don’t. Their business is server hosting. The app level is up to the customer.

What did I miss? How could this time through (the same as the first, second, third, and fourth time through) of the install have resulted in something so different?

I’m after it too vonkanehoffen. I’d have thought there would be lots of people in this boat.

It seems the buddypress developers are discouraging the use of user capabilities in buddypress. They don’t want it to be used for content management. I’m not sure why. I think it is a mistake. It makes buddypress look like a hanging appendage off of wordpress. It doesn’t allow buddypress to integrate seamlessly into wordpress’s blog engine.
