I have big probkem with spam.
Installed latest buddypress and wordpress.
I have captcha (recaptcha) also, but there is enormous fake user registrations and status messages.
Can somebody help me?
Now I must delete each from database. (not from dashboard)

I have been trying to get rid of (or greatly eliminate) my spammer problem…have installed these plugins:
Buddypress Humanity
Really Simple Captcha
Si Captcha Anti-Spam
Stop Spammer Registrations

And I’m STILL getting spammers! I do currently have 2 fields on my registration form that are supposed to guard against spam…you can see it at http://www.mommychats.com I THINK I have them configured right…But I am still getting people joining that then message me with garbage like this:
“Hello
I saw your profile today and it was so good to me.u know that i am interested to be a friend first.i also believe that coming to you will be a probability of meeting that very love that has been lacking in my entire life. please i will like you to contact me direct to my e-mail address, (grceamslu@yahoo.com) i dont know the posebility of remaing in forum for long time,i will give you a full introduction of my self with my pictures ok. i will be waiting for your mail to my e-mail adsdress(grceamslu@yahoo.com) as you know
there is no age,race,colour n religion bar when it comes to true love,
cares Grace.”

ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is the problem that these freaks that post this sort of stuff are actual PEOPLE, and not spambots? Is there ANY way to guard against this sort of things? Oh I’m SOOO frustrated! My members are getting this sort of message as well and I don’t want them to leave me in droves because of this!

Any tips? I cannot be the only one dealing with this! Sigh!

I’m using the BuddyPress Default theme (I don’t know if this would make any difference), and when I was testing out the profiles I noticed that whenever you fill in profile fields, it automatically puts links on the field. When you click the link it automatically searches for all members who have the same field, which is great for some fields, but not for others. For example, I have a biography field where people can put multiple lines in, but it makes no sense for there to be links on the bio.

So is there a relatively quick and easy way to stop the fields being linked automatically? I’m pretty new to html and css.

I’m using the BuddyPress Default theme and I can’t figure out how to remove the login form in the sidebar, the same place as the primary widget space, I think. I’ve tried to look this up but couldn’t find anything that worked. Is there a relatively easy and quick fix? I’m pretty new to html and css.

Hi, Thanks for answering.
I am using the BuddyPress default theme with a child theme and no BP Template Pack. I did use a some of the code from a different theme that I was using before when I was making my child theme, so something could be interacting from there perhaps. I thought I had removed all of the javascript from what I used, but I could have missed something.
For the “Favorite” button, when I get a 404, this is the link that is produced: http://rheum4us.org/activity-streams/favorite/3/?_wpnonce=275e4782c7
Is that what the link is supposed to look like?

Wordpress Version: 3.3.1
Current Theme is: BuddyPress Default 1.5.4

I’m having issues trying to locate which file I need to edit in order to make the sub topics be on separate lines.

Currently the topics are in a paragraph separated by commas like so:
MAIN CATEGORY
Topic One (0, 0), Topic Two (0, 0), Topic Three (0, 0), Topic Four (0, 0),
Topic Five (0, 0), And So On (0, 0)

I’d like to put a
where the commas are so that it would look like so:
MAIN CATEGORY
Topic One (0, 0)
Topic Two (0, 0)
Topic Three (0, 0)
Topic Four (0, 0)
Topic Five (0, 0)
And So On (0, 0)

I’ve tried:
forums-loop.php
page-front-forums.php
but I think I’m on the wrong track as neither of those make a difference.

hi,
im using buddypress 1.2.7 and wordpress 3.2
i know its older version, but i think the problem is general.
people sign up to my website

even though i have a recapcha. some appeard in my users table without having confirmed their email and some “confirm” their email, even though the email looks fake. how can they sign up to my database without filling in the recaptcha or confirming their mail?
how can i prevent this?

Thanks so much Boone. It finally worked. Didn’t know I have to tick the group setting over there.

Just saw your profile and glad that the developer of CUNY replied me Really appreciate it here.

By the way, would it be advisable for me to remove the login function created by BuddyPress and just have the wp-fb autoconnect plugin to allow users to login with their Facebook? If so, how do I remove the default login from the sidebar?

Unfortunately as @mercime has stated to use 2011 you will have to go through the process of theme compatibility.

In a related question, is there a plan to try and make bpuddypress theme independent?

On the surface it looks to me like it should be possible using some smart and unique CSS class naming that buddy press could be installed as a plugin with a set of additional CSS files rather than replacement CSS files.

I see in the dev chats that some folk are working on yet another child theme, but to be honest having buddy press so tightly coupled to the theme has been one of the main setbacks of this project (imho)

Surely the resource and time of these talented and dedicated members would be better spent on decoupling buddy press from the theme rather than creating another theme that existing users are unlikely to benefit from and gives yet another unrequired decision (and potential dead end) during the early process of getting started.

Buddy press components appear typically in:

The top navigation (can be handled using the menu builder or manually)
The main content area
The side bar
The buddy bar (now the wordpress tool bar)

Most themes contain these areas (to be compatible with other plugins) so we must surely be at the stage where serious thought is being given to starting the decoupling process?

Future versions of buddy press should be tested to death on the wordpress default theme and and let theme owners take it from there.

Is this possible or it the task immense?

Yes, each part (or component) off BuddyPress can be turned on/off individually. If you *just* want forums, however, it makes more sense to use https://bbpress.org/

Thank you for taking the time to get back to me. It’s nice to confirm what I suspected. ie, best remove the buddybar on small screens and have the profile menu as the main one. I’ll change the home button to site-wide activity, and then have the profile as a compact drop down for mobile devices. I’ll report back when I get it set up.

Hey aces if you share an email I can send you the log in info, and you can see BuddyPress is installed properly. You can even delete the current BuddyPress, and install- upload BuddyPress again. The issue is from BuddyPress or the server “Godaddy” …

I have WordPress experience, and after I installed BuddyPress there was no errors shown as I have seen on other plugins. I know from experience if a plugin has problems a message box appears stating an error of the plugin being installed. After I installed BuddyPress no error messages appear, yet we see the ‘You have no groups’ message, and it’s starange…

Perhaps the server “Godaddy” is not loading all theBuddyPress files properly?

It looks like BuddyPress was not properly installed. You should never see the ‘You have no groups’ message, unless you have manually deleted something from the database.

Check the content of your wp-content/themes/wp-davinci-prem/ folder it should at least contain the 6 BP folders I mentioned in my previous post – /activity, /blogs, /forums, /groups, /members, and /registration

If one or more are absent, something went awry with the BP compatibility process. You should download a zipped copy of BP to your hard drive; unzip the folder, then open up the unzipped folder and open the bp-default theme folder in buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/ and upload the the missing BP folder/s note above to your theme folder in server – wp-content/themes/wp-davinci-prem/
