I’m looking for a few testers to try out a simple Featured Members Widget (plugin) I just created.

Like all WP widgets, this widget is managed via the WPMU admin panel. Just download, unzip, and place it in your mu-plugins folder. It will automatically be activated. However to use it, you must click “Add” to add it to a particular theme column.

The Featured Members Widget allows you indicate which members you want to feature and to also choose the displayed avatar image size (the standard smaller image or a larger avatar image). You can feature a single member or multiple members.

It uses core BuddyPress CSS selectors for output formatting. So, the output looks like other standard, core BP widgets. If you want to customize the formatting, you’ll need to add your own CSS.

This is a first testing release so I’m looking for issues and any feedback on ways it can be improved.

I plan on totally overhauling this widget’s output (both data and formatting) for a custom BP site I’m currently hacking. But, I thought that I should share this general version with the community before I tear my version apart.

This was tested with WPMU 2.7 and BP trunk 1286.

You can download a zip file directly from here:

    http://www.sayremedia.com/buddypress/featured_members_widget.php.zip

Once it seems that this widget is good to go, I’ll add it to the WordPress (BuddyPress) Plugin repository. Until then, you can access it at the link above.

What is the current most possible way to make buddypress site members’ only? I’d like annonymous visitors to be able to see the home, but access to member profiles and others would require login.

    I thought there’s such plugin, but can’t find it…

Actually I submitted a story to the Community Blog. It is on the homepage now. BuddyPress in K-12 Education.

I have a design concepts teacher who is introducing it to his students today and they will be creating ePortfolios which I will be making public. If I remember I will share their blog links here so you can see how the students are using it.

If anyone is in “education” and wants to contact me so we can share ideas via phone, please message me here and we can talk. I am pretty excited about what our students are doing with BP and WPMU.

activity feed is showing full contents if the content is not English, especially Japanese or perhaps Chinese.

I have several wordpress plugins to generate excerpts, or even a Japanese plugin to make sure excerpts generated when Kanji is used. But it seems it doesn’t work on buddypress theme.

    Does anybody know some solution?

Good suggestions, and I think for the time being we’re all waiting for the 1.0 release before we start documenting code. Until then, any of it is subject to change at any point.

Once 1.0 is out there is a benchmark to start documenting from, in my opinion.

I can give you a hint though, check out the /css directories in each plugin, check out the member-theme, the buddypress-home theme, and you can also create a file called “site-wide.css” and put it in your /css directory for your home theme, and put all of your site-wide CSS changes in there.

Does anyone here have/know a blog post or, bunch of information for customizing the default buddypress theme?

I know there’re some posts on the forum, but wouldn’t it be nice if the resource is placed at one, probably as sticky post on this category?

Uhm… I think that if this project is accepted then you’ll see photo galleries in a couple of months for sure! ;)

As long as it’s not already in development or if exists a working bp plugin, the project has a chance to be accepted… It’s a feature many of you are waiting. Having someone (me, in this case) doing this stuff allows people like Andy to focus on other important pieces of BuddyPress.

The fact that mu makes a default blog post, “Hello World”, is not a good thing in buddypress for a number of reasons.

Is there a way to make make no default post when adding a new user?

    thanks

Here is the description of the album component thats said to be out in 09 sometime.

    “Photo Albums

Members of a BuddyPress installation will be able to create their own photo albums. These albums can be shared with friends and groups.

Each member will be given a certain amount of space, which can be set by the site administrator. Albums and photos can be tagged. It will also be possible to browse public photos via photo tag pages that other members can browse (just as you browse blogs via tags on wordpress.com).

Photos can also be tagged to a group as mentioned previously in the group component overview.

Photos can be uploaded from a members computer, and will be re-sized accordingly using the built in WordPress image manipulation functions.”

    Thebigk,

This isn’t a BuddyPress issue as the rich editing options and settings are handled through WordPress MU.

From what I could see on a quick search on https://mu.wordpress.org/forums/, the rich editor options will only affect new blogs (not ones already created). For older ones, you might have to manually update the setting in the database with a tool such as phpMyAdmin.

I’d suggest also digging around more in the MU forums for such terms as “rich editor” or “rich editing” to see if there are more threads on this topic.

@Ninh – Sounds like you are on the right track. One word of caution, though: if you are manually copying files from one place to another it’s very easy to lose hidden files, like .htaccess files. These are very important and can cause problems with your install.

It’s highly recommend to start over with a new download or SVN checkout at the new server location so you are sure to get the correct setup.

@Dace – Same thing… if you upgraded and only copied certain files you can get into problems. If you are going to upgrade, it’s recommended that you replace the entire BuddyPress install (not just pieces).

Like I said before–and you can search the forums–this topic is very common and usually comes down to a few things: GD support, htaccess issues, or file permissions on the directory where the avatar images are uploaded to.

Great — glad to hear it. Sorry to have missed your previous questions.

where do i upload the .po file to??

Anywhere on the server, it doesn’t matter.

what does this command do exactely

It takes your PO file and creates the MO for you.

did you mean.. ”and added the buddypress-spots.mo file there…”

    Yes.

i have already set up in wp-config.php will this clash with what you have said to doo..

Hmmm… that I don’t know. I don’t use those configuration settings, myself. I would suggest commenting them out and testing your site. If the language file changes are still working, go ahead and delete those lines from your wp-config file.

Overall the language file is a better long-term solution since you can make changes for other labels there as well if they come up in future versions, whereas those custom definitions are only specific to a few labels.

in last trunk the comment button (how many comments, right from tags) on Blog main page doesn’t show.

I use the buddypress-home theme and german language file from buddypress.de

can someone help to fix it?

    In reply to: BP-FBConnect Plugin

    Hello,

I have installed the trunk version of buddypress.org on my site . I used the link for installation — https://svn.buddypress.org/trunk/. After that i proceeded installing BP-FBConnect Plugin, using the link http://testbp.org/plugins/bp-fbconnect.zip. I downloaded the bp-fbconnect.zip to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory. After that i extracted it. I have not performed any further steps in the installation. However when accessing my site and logging in, the fconnect plugin is not listed at all.

Please advice. is there further steps involved in the installation. Thanks in advance.

    Regards,

    Gokul.

I’m not sure if I messed up with any setting. I’ve a local setup of WPMU+Buddypress using XAMPP.

When I login as normal user, I do not see rich text editor to compose posts. But when I login as admin, I do get a rich text editor.

How should I enable rich text formatting for everyone?

So i have wpmu, bbpress, and buddypress integrated together and working and I also have buddypress group forums working. How do I add the Forums tab in the header with the Home, News, Groups, and Blogs tabs that links to the bbpress forums?
