ParticipantThankyou, @henrywright.
Copying the whole plugin would be much more than what I did.
I copied the buddypress folder that is contained in bp-legacy. Is that not was what the directions meant?
If I did this right, why are the files not visible in the WordPress back end at Themes > Editor > mytheme?

ParticipantMy wp-config.php and my .htaccess are both correct, isn’t it? –
What shall we do? –
— Shall we try to get the button at issue visible within the current WordPress-installation (with www. in the general settings)?
— Or shall we try to solve the “Umleitungs”-problem, which appears, when I remove the www. from the general settings (s. https://buddypress.org/support/topic/no-button-for-finishing-registration/#post-187046)?

ModeratorHi @eable,
The directions look like they mean for me to move the whole of /buddypress/ into my child theme
Be careful not to copy the whole BuddyPress plugin to your child theme. Just the templates should be copied. As you mention in your post, the templates are found here /bp-templates/bp-legacy/buddypress/
Also worth mentioning is you only need to copy the templates you need. So for example, if you want to modify the members loop, then you can just copy members-loop.php into folder /your-theme/buddypress/members/members-loop.php

ParticipantHi @rutzki,
are you responding to yourself ?
i dont find, where i have put in the german translation in the po file.
😀If you use poEdit, you can create your own copy of de_DE.po directly from the source on your local buddypress copy.
The .po file header information necessary to get all translatable strings:
msgid "" msgstr "" "PO-Revision-Date: 2014-08-06 02:16+0100\n" "MIME-Version: 1.0\n" "Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8\n" "Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit\n" "Plural-Forms: nplurals=2; plural=n > 1;\n" "X-Generator: Poedit 1.5.7\n" "Project-Id-Version: BuddyPress 2.0.2\n" "POT-Creation-Date: \n" "Last-Translator: \n" "Language-Team: \n" "Language: de\n" "X-Poedit-SourceCharset: UTF-8\n" "X-Poedit-Basepath: .\n" "X-Poedit-KeywordsList: __;_e;__ngettext:1,2;_n:1,2;__ngettext_noop:1,2;" "_n_noop:1,2;_x:1,2c;_nx:4c,1,2;_nx_noop:4c,1,2;_ex:1,2c;esc_attr__;" "esc_attr_e;esc_attr_x:1,2c;esc_html__;esc_html_e;esc_html_x:1,2c\n" "X-Poedit-SearchPath-0: ..\n"August 18, 2014 at 2:29 am #187103In reply to: Add profile field to 'Order By' drop down menu

Participantdid you noticed that profile field datas are clickable ?
This default behaviour is intended to be use as a filter.Member A filled the Contractor field
If any visitor goes to member’s A profile and click on the Contractor field value, BP will show a list of all other members who also filled in this field. So what you want to get already exist !

ParticipantThanks @danbp for your reply.
I am fine with your explanation about the private and public nature of activities. My original question was about new forum activities created afterchanging a group’s status to public not showing up in group (&sitewide) activity anymore.
The real issue is this: Buddypress automatically creates forums during group creation if the check box is marked in. Private forums for private groups; public forums for public groups.
However, Buddypress does not change the visibility of the forums themselves when a group’s visibility is later changed. So while you think that your group has become Public now, it is still running a private forum inside itself.
Hence the queer case of the missing forum activity. So yeah, the workaround would be to manually change the forum’s visibility whenever one changes the group’s 😉

Just Wow!
If forwarding a message in a “Messaging” app is considered picky, then guilty as charged. That fact that you are stunned that that we use the internal messaging system to communicate with our users is a little lost on me. I really thought that was what messaging was for.
As for composing a message to users not on your friends list, it indeed can be done, but only if you can remember exactly what the user name is. Auto-complete is unavailable unless they are on your friends list. If you can remember every single user on your site with names like rad_dude87155, then I guess you wouldn’t need that feature. I understand why it designed that way, but it really should be optional, and most definitely available to admins. Just have a look here and tell me this is an unreasonable request.
https://buddypress.org/support/tag/autocomplete/
It certainly seems you don’t set a very high bar for a messaging app which is why you keep pointing me away from this one. Indeed I may have to find a better solution, and maybe all of the other people who posted with similar problems should be steered away as well and you won’t have to deal with anyone who expects what was stated in the documentation, let alone suggesting maybe improving the app.
Thank you everyone that actually tried to help and worked to fix the bad documentation. If I hit a nerve for expecting a common sense feature for a messaging app, then I apologize. I guess I should take danbp’s advice and look elsewhere.

Participantoh I see: you are very picky ! 😉
The only way to be notified is this setting page (under the condition you activate BP’s private message component). And as you can see, there is no possibility to forward message.
On front or on back end.As an admin on our site, I am left with tons of unnecessary work when I need to forward messages to my mods from a user.
I’m a little stuned why you receive user messages if they want to contact a mod in fact. If you do unnecessary work, i would suggest you find a better handling method first. But i maybe wrong and this point is more subtle as i understand it here.
Anyway, this is your really specific BP usage. And so far i know, it is not a very common usage. BP cannot respond to absoulte any user usage. No software can do so.
As site admin, i never encountered any problem to contact the site members. And i never needed to create a friendship first to contact any of them. This action is only used when you want to invite members to join a private group.
So if you think you’re right, you’re free to ask for an enhancement on the Trac. If the devs will consider your demand as justified, you can begin to hope to receive satisfaction one day.
If not, or if you don’t want to wait, you’re free to develop your own solution.Of course i disagree with this opinion:
It was most certainly not designed with efficiency on mind.IMHO it’s better as nothing. Imagine one second that BP had no messaging system… The actual maybe rustical, incomplete or not responding exactly to your need, but would you be efficient enough to find another free and so powerfull software as BP is ? 😉

I fear that this may be a typo as well which is a terrible shame. As an admin on our site, I am left with tons of unnecessary work when I need to forward messages to my mods from a user. We have resorted to just taking screencaps when we can get away with it, as pasting text from a message is never properly formatted. On top of that, even as an admin I can’t message my mods or even users directly unless they are on my friends list. Both of these things make messaging within buddypress a huge hassle and disappointment. It was most certainly not designed with efficiency on mind. 🙁
@danbp
I am aware of all that but I fail to see what it has to do with forwarding messages. Forwarding messages would be internal like all other messaging.August 17, 2014 at 5:25 pm #187080In reply to: Forwarding Messages

ParticipantHi @akovia,
each logged in user has access to his profile settings. Eg. on the top right user menu (howdy…)
or on the buddybar under the profile header./membres/xxxx/settings/notifications/
Settings > Email
Once on this setting page, each user can decide for what he want to receive an alert. But it is an emailed notice he will receive, not the complete message.
This messaging system is intended to work internally. This means the content of the message stays on the site. BP eventually sends only a reference to the content. Eg. xxx send you a private message (site url), not the full message.

WordPress and BuddyPress were built for you to enjoy free without the agenda of getting people to pay for plugins/themes but most of the people that provide paid plugins/themes have nothing to do with the core development of WP/BP and they usually also have another job or depend on their development to make a living so I think it is a little unfair to expect the people that depend on the income for the time it takes them to develop a plugin/theme to not be compensated for their work. There are plenty of freebies in the WordPress repository so you should look there and if what your looking for isn’t there but there is a premium plugin that will do what you need or if you have to hire someone to provide custom code then expect they will expect to be compensated for their work. Not everything is going to be free! You can also post your project here: http://jobs.wordpress.net/ and specify that it is on an unpaid volunteer basis. You never know you just might get lucky with someone that will help you free of charge on a project that would take a good bit of time to code. Anyway, good luck with your endeavor!August 17, 2014 at 2:35 pm #187064In reply to: Daily to do list

ParticipantWhats this about trust? Learning to code for me is impossible. Sorry I come from a time when the internet was free. You would ask for help and people were happy to give help and were not out to put a price on everything. Look when I suggest something I would like my raspberry pi to do on a forum. I don’t get people coming in and saying pay us and we will write you a script. They suggest ways to accomplish what I am doing, including providing the code. If other people like the project they also come along and help with suggestions, everyone learns, everyone gains. No money involved.
As for learning to code. 1994 I put up my first website. written in HTML, for me it was really hard work as the dyslectic nature on my brain put pieces of the code back to front or muddled. So I went on a university night course to learn it. They helped me to learn it but steered me in a graphical direction instead. I learned Lightwave 3D then moved on to 3D max, Went back to collage and learned photoshop and corel draw. By that time dreamweaver 1 had come out so building websites for someone who can’t code became easier. I have had many website out there since my first, all free, many built for other people again for free. Thing is I don’t mistrust developers, developers over the years have provided me with what I need, software that I need to be able to do as I do. Software I pay for, but I also run linux systems where I test what developers are up to and willing to share for free. Same applies here bp-help.
They way I feel now is that WordPress and Buddypress are simply given away free so developers can make money of the designing of plugins, what do you think that says to me about the people who have helped develop WordPress and Buddypress without making any money.. There are plenty of them out there yes? I feel like they were simply used to provide somewhere, people wishing to make money, could happily do so on the back of them that created the platform for nothing.
Sorry I come from a place where money and mistrust don’t really play a part.. Guess I should just look somewhere a bit less skeptical.

Also keep in mind that @djpaul is one of the BuddyPress core developers so scolding him for simply providing a link to provide you info is not conducive to getting help when he already gives a lot of time to the BuddyPress project that you enjoy free of charge! Be humble and take all help for what it is worth without getting defensive on the forums. Peace and good luck!August 17, 2014 at 12:31 pm #187059In reply to: Daily to do list

ParticipantYes Paul. I do have payed for plugins from various places and have payed people before to fine tune them. But before I even consider paying for something I want to test it and make sure my money isn’t being wasted. So as always the first thing to do is ask questions, does the ability to do what I require exist, if so what plugins, Hence why I am asking the questions. Perhaps someone who designs plugins and sells then may come in and say, yes I have something that may help. Then I will check out what they have, if it takes me so far the discuss with them what help I could get in making it work for me If bought it from them. The article you posted a link to misses out so much..And you I feel just jumped to a conclusion.
On This matter I have been testing out all the to do list and task manager plugins out there. I hit a brick wall so thought I would ask those who know what they would suggest.
Perhaps hold back next time Paul before posting such a link, you may just not have all the facts 🙂
And always remember, wordpress and buddypress are free. Some time in the past someone, somewhere probably said on a forum “I would like a website script that is great for blogging but doesn’t mean I have to pay a developer thousands for” some one took notice, didn’t ask for thousands but got together with other interested people and built wordpress and buddypress. If you have pointed then to your link when they asked the question, perhaps we wouldn’t have wordpress or buddypress now ?August 17, 2014 at 11:24 am #187057In reply to: Personalize profile navigation link text

ModeratorThese text strings get set in the
setup_nav()method. See here for an example. They’re translatable via a language file but to my knowledge they’re not filterable. That means whilst it will be easy to change the text to something fixed such as ‘My activity’, it will be difficult changing it to something variable such as ‘Pete’s activity’.Ref: https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/customizing/customizing-labels-messages-and-urls/

KeymasterMost of the old Ning -> BuddyPress stuff was, I guess, for their 1.0 version; it was all written a few years ago in reaction to some change on their end. I think you’re going to have to spend a bunch of time seeing if the old importers work — if they don’t, you’ll need to write one, or fix it up.

ParticipantYour last answer I have seen right now. – I can’t answer in detail before tomorrow; I have to logout and to leave.
Only short:
“What is the /usage/ folder for?”
Maybe for for statistics.
“Most hoster have a root folder like htdocs or wwww.
You install WP at the root. Eg. server root/wp-content, server root/wp-admin, etc”The highest level is not named. The wp-config.php and the .htaccess are on the highest level. The different WordPress-Folders constitute – together with the usage-folder – the second level.
—–
Before I did:
— Again I started everything up form the beginning. Now it is impossible to delete the file
.nfs00000000038a694400007603
from the wp-admin/includes folder.— I delete and re-create the wordpress-database etc.
— This time I removed NOT the www. from the general setting.
— I inserted the indicated further lines to the wp-config.php and uploaded the .htaccess.
— I can log in; and I have two dashboards now. I activate ‘Es können neue Seiten und Benutzer registriert werden.’ (New pages and users can be registered.)
— I log out; check the registration page. It’s everything okay: The ‘weiter’ (next)-Button is there.
— I log in. I installed and activated BuddyPress.
— I de-activated ‘Extended Profiles’. I de-activated ‘Show the Toolbar for logged out users’.
— I log out and check the register page. The submit-Button is missing again.
—
However, on Friday I received the message from my provider: ‘Ich habe dir DNS Wildcard gesetzt und www entfernt.’ (I have set the Wildcard and www removed.’) –
But of course this referred on the WordPress/Buddy-installation from Friday not from today.

Once the MultiSite Version is activated, there are – neither on the Network-level nor on the 1a-Spielwiese-level – the lines “WordPress Address (URL)” and “Site Address (URL)” within the Generel Settings anymore.
However, my provider removed the www prefix already on Friday for me; cfr.:

Please follow it, as you will probably be invited to give some more details to solve it.”Have I to do anything right now? Or have I to read it only for the moment?

However, I have decided to re-start really from the beginning; I removed all files from my ftp-server.
