    Hello Everyone,

    I am having some difficulty getting the information I want for a theme (template page) I am writing. I was looking for something that would allow me to learn some bp methods, so I am trying to display a site map type page, which lists sites, blogs, groups users with some metrix, e.g. no. of posts or pages published in last 24hrs, 7 days… or number of activities in group feed etc, or number of updates from user.. this sort of thing.

    My first thought, been somewhat new to this is that I should look at the bddb and write some functions which take out of the tables the info I need (in php & mysql). However WP has a very well documented reference guide, and usually functions already exist for this type of thing. I see that BP has functions, but little documentation (that i have found) about the arguments or what they return, so I wondered if anyone knew of functions to do the above etc.

    So far I have found things like:

    ‘$bpGroup_count=$wpdb->get_var(“SELECT COUNT(*) FROM {$prefix}bp_groups;”);’
    are there any issues using this type of approach in functions.php?

    and then I have tried to use bp_has_groups, and a range of other functions, which I have not managed to echo the result of.
    And then there is $bp, which I have failed to understand.

    I’m not stupid, but it seems fairly difficult to get started. Any help is much appreciated. If I Can learn this stuff, I’d be more than happy to add to the documentation.

    Many Thanks, Andrew.

    I want the users profile tab disappears but the option to change avatar aparezca en otra pagina distinta del perfil de usuario. In profile form of the “theme my login plugin”.

    <?php

    <input type="hidden" name="user_id" id="user_id" value="ID ); ?>” />
    <input type="submit" class="button-primary" value="” name=”submit” />

    This code has to work in the code above:

    <?php _e( 'Your avatar will be used on your profile and throughout the site. If there is a Gravatar associated with your account email we will use that, or you can upload an image from your computer.’, ‘buddypress’) ?>

    <?php _e( 'Your avatar will be used on your profile and throughout the site. To change your avatar, please create an account with Gravatar using the same email address as you used to register with this site.’, ‘buddypress’ ) ?>

    This is even WORSE…

    -Hidden/private group activity DOES show for logged-out users
    -Hidden/private group activity DOES show on the Friends activity tab

    I’m using Themekraft CCPro as well as S2member.
    Also using BP Forums Extras: View activity comments on forum posts
    Activity Bump.

    I’ve made no modifications to activity-loop.php.

    For the moment, I can restrict activity for not logged in users by using s2member’s uri restrictions, but this is just a patch, there’s something funny going on here.

    Daisy

    PS as an aside, I can’t access any forum topics I’ve started or replied to through my profile page *on this site*. Also can’t post activity updates or private messages to anybody. Can’t access forum replies via the menu at the very top of the page either.

    Thank you @modemlooper !

    I don’t think I really know how to start on that …

    I have tried this:

    foreach( $activities->activities as $key => $activity ) {
    if ( $activity->scope ==’friends’ || $activity->scope ==’just_me’) {
    unset( $activities->activities[$key] );

    but it does not work, I mean I only get the friends but not my own posts :-(

    As far as I understood is the “scope” I need not the action types (I want all actions to show, but for friends and the current user only)

    What am I doing wrong?

    An other thing that I have noticed, when I click on the “All users” Tab, the site-wide activity is there all untouched, and this is definitely not supposed to hapen. I need to filter that fully out!

    Just like Facebook! Imagine you loginto Facebook and get the billions of user activity statuses rolling in front of your eyes …

    I guess it has to be checked somehow that the displayed activity belongs to the current-user friends only …
    but how !??!

    @boonebgorges, thanks, and I have to ask why would you advise against doing it? Having those duplicates in the activity stream is actually an extremely bad thing for my site, because they are essentially items for sale. If a user is able to view the copy of a post made to my main site by the SWT plugin (as you are able to on certain posts that have been natively posted to one of my network’s child sites), the “add to form” cart renders using MY paypal info, rather than the seller’s info, as it does when you view the item on their site!

    Here is an example of a child site post (copied to the main site via SWT) that you can get to via one of the duplicate activity entries:

    http://www.riotcart.com/blog/2011/01/30/medium-juliette-skirty/

    And here is the item on the seller’s own site (a child site on my network):

    http://www.riotcart.com/hedgieshideaway/?p=115

    As you can imagine, it’s extremely important that users/front-end viewers are NOT given the option of which version (the original or the copy to the main site) they’d like to click into!

    @nahummadrid, I honestly have no idea what was going on. Like I mentioned, as soon as I removed the “before_blog_post” and “after_blog_post” BP codes from around my query for the featured post, the problem was non-existent, and I was able to just use the block activity stream types plugin you had recommended :D

    For the record, here is my query for the featured post. I use the Featured Content Showcase plugin for various reasons, but it displays a slideshow. All I wanted was one static, random post with an image, title, and excerpt on each page load, so I dug around and found the meta key/velue that the FCS plugin was adding to posts marked as featured, and ran with it:

    `$args=array(
    ‘orderby’ => ‘rand’,
    ‘post_type’ => ‘post’,
    ‘post_status’ => ‘publish’,
    ‘numberposts’ =>1,
    ‘post_type’ => ‘post’,
    ‘meta_key’ => ‘_fcs_featured’,
    ‘meta_value’ => ‘true’,
    );

    $latest = get_posts($args);
    $count = 0;
    foreach($latest as $post) {

    $blogid = get_post_meta($post->ID, ‘blogid’, true);
    $image = get_post_meta($post->ID, ‘thumbnail’, true);
    $title = get_post_meta($post->ID, ‘_fcs_title’, true);
    $text = get_post_meta($post->ID, ‘_fcs_text’, true);
    if ( empty($title) ) {
    $title = get_the_title($post->ID);
    }

    if ( empty($text) ) {
    $text = $post->post_excerpt;
    if ( post_password_required($post) ) {
    $text = __(‘There is no excerpt because this is a protected post.’);
    } elseif ( !empty($post->post_excerpt) ) {
    $text = apply_filters(‘get_the_excerpt’, $post->post_excerpt);
    } else {
    $text = $this->_makeExcerpt($post->post_content);
    }
    }`

    Hi everyone,

    I actually enjoy all the amazing possibilities of s2Member and Buddypress combined but I’m really concerned by a “bug” (if it’s a bug) I came across recently.

    Since I want my posts to be readable by members only, I protected every one of them by a Level #0 requirement (free registration). Nevertheless, now when I want to “Share on Facebook”, the excerpt and thumbnail displayed are those of the Membership Options Page (the page where you are redirected if you are not logged in).

    Is there any way I can keep the old behavior of the Facebook share? I don’t want people to share the Membership Options Page… and that’s not what users want either. The Facebook activity should engage users to have a look on what is the post about.

    Thank you a lot for your time and help!
    Sincerely,
    BBC

    I don’t know when it began, to be honest I never noticed it on the forums, for the first week of the site we didn’t use the forum, we were taking the time to populate the site with some posts etc before releasing it.

    Following steps from creating a new user registration is not going to tell you anything as the problem is already there, users can’t change their username and they don’t display on forums etc as stated before.

    I was just reminded by a friend an hours ago that we did use a function to allow upper case characters for users, I’ve been looking for exact code that I used but can’t just yet…. I’ll keep looking. I had forgotten about this as it was only in for a short while at the beginning. Although I can’t remember, it is possible some of the initial users registered during its inclusion.

    Edit: I should note that there is only the 8 team members signed up on the site, its not fully live yet, so editing usernames via database wouldn’t be an issue if it would help?

    I am using BP 1.5.1. – using a child theme based on the standard theme.
    I have successfully created a submenu called ‘blog’ – this is displayed next to Activity/Profile/Friends etc etc
    I want to create a simple loop to display all posts for that particular user. I’ve tried various things but cannot seem to populate the posts for the ‘loop’
    e.g.

    while ( have_posts() ) : the_post();
    echo '<li>';
    the_title();
    echo '</li>';
    endwhile;

    Can someone help? I can add complexity if I can get access to the basics :-)

    Hi, I’ve been banging my head against a search engine for about two days now trying to figure this out. What I’m trying to do is make a ‘featured users’ page template, that is able to display the avatar image, real name, and several other profile fields from a user’s profile, along with their blog posts, etc.

    I would like the template to be dynamic, so that all I have to do is specify a user name and all the field data is fetched for me. One way I thought to do this would be to name the wordpress page so it perfectly matches a username. That way I could use ‘the_title’ as a user id argument.

    Problem is, as a PHP nooblet, I have idea how to do this. Closest I’ve found to what I want is:

    ”

    This function seems to contain the essence of what I’m after, but I can’t find any clear documentation on it and can’t work out how to modify it. I want to change that bp_loggedin_user_id() to a user id matching ‘the_title’. Anyone know how to do this, or where to find the documentation that would allow me to teach myself how to do it?

    I was wondering if anyone could help me out i have reached out to the developer and he wants 140 for his time although i do think its fair and he should be paid for his time i just cannot afford it at this time unfortunately ..

    Im trying to show the users rating points in the login box after the user has logged in already

    i have added this code

    <?php
    global $bp;

    $karma = get_usermeta( $bp->displayed_user->id, ‘rfp_post_karma’ );
    $relative_karma = rfp_calculate_relative_karma( $karma, $bp->displayed_user->id );

    echo ‘

    ‘ . get_option( ‘rfp_karma_label’ ) . rfp_poster_karma( $relative_karma ) . ‘

    ‘;
    ?>

    it gets and displays the label no problem but it doesn’t show the the actual points after the label i have searched in and out and i cant figure it out.

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Hi there.. I’m running the latest install of both BP and WP. As the admin I’ve started writing blog posts using the principal BP blog (the main one). I have the activity feed setup as the homepage on my install. The problem I’m seeing is that once I’ve posted an article, it is displayed on the activity feed and eventually gets buried by the preceding posts and comments. Is there a place/page or a way for users to get to the main blog to see all the posts that I’ve written? Is something not setup correctly?

    Thanks!

    It would take a plethora of posts to describe the battles lol. We’re still dealing with them.

    For us the biggest challenge has been replicating all the functionality of Ning. Features such as message forward, reply to sender only on multiple user messages and mass share on discussions/blog posts are a beast and we still haven’t quite figured out that madness.

    The headache we’ve been dealing with all day today is the fact that we moved about 90,000 users from Ning to BP two weeks ago to run the import. We didn’t want them to get a message about password reset at the time because the dev site wasn’t public. So, by doing that we created a screwed up scenario where when we switched the domain we got hit with 10,000 users who’s Ning password wouldn’t take.

    Plus, we had to quickly reverse out of asking for “user names” on BP login because Ning uses email as user name. Most Ning users think their user name is their display name and BP won’t accept spaces or cap letters in username.

    See what I mean… could go on forever!

    But in the end we now control everything and can build it out the way we want. Which is what we wanted.

    How do I get the notifications BuddyPress display that users comment on my post.
    that works for all users.
    Help me and the authors of the posts have no way of knowing when their post comment.

    Hang on. I think I led you a bit astray with Buddypress Links. It does what you want, yes, but it creates links to already existing web pages/sites/videos/images/etc. You are however limited to only one display image, but it fetches all available images automatically and gives you the choice of which to use as the avatar. You can see an example of it working here: http://buddylite.com/links/

    Creating a custom post type would link back to the author’s BP profile, just like any blog post. Basic CSS rules could then be added to your theme’s style.css to display the entries in a directory-like fashion on an archive page.

    Another solution altogether could be to simply add a front-end post form like Quick-Post-Widget that allows posting only to a category you create specifically for this purpose (Businesses). Then create a menu item linking to that category archive in WP custom menus. Your theme’s archive.php template can be customized to display posts in that category in any directory-like fashion you prefer (grid, list, etc.). Finally, a category-specific search plugin could be used in your theme allowing users to specify the “Businesses” category you created.

    So sorry I didn’t see your request for more help. I have my settings to be notified of any @mentions and replies to my forum posts but for some reason I did not receive any notification that you had replied. Not sure if it’s a problem with BuddyPress.org notifications or what.

    Anyway, it’s probably too late and you hopefully found a solution already, but I’ll post this here just in case you or anyone else are still looking for a way to disable the random visit menu in the BuddyPress admin bar without disabling the admin bar itself.

    Rather than explain the inadequate solution of changing #bp-adminbar-visitrandom-menu display to none in the stylesheet, let me give the function override solution instead:

    In your theme’s footer.php file, right BEFORE it says “, add the following code:
    `
    <?php
    if (!is_user_logged_in()) {
    remove_action( ‘bp_adminbar_menus’, ‘bp_adminbar_random_menu’, 100 );
    }
    ?>
    `
    That’s if you want the random visit menu to be removed only for users who are not logged in.

    If you want it to be removed for all users, whether or not they’re logged in, use this simpler code instead:
    `
    <?php
    remove_action( ‘bp_adminbar_menus’, ‘bp_adminbar_random_menu’, 100 );
    ?>
    `

    I see that the font for the code I just posted is not clearly legible in places. Please note that the remove_action line ends with a semi-colon ;

    @nahummadrid – nice solution. It’s concise, and responsive (VERY important). Every other solution I’ve tested slows down the text input to a crawl, which isn’t acceptable for a public site and will really annoy anyone who types with all their fingers. I haven’t encountered the issue to which you alluded re. users breaking the limit with copy/paste. It’s working flawlessly. Thanks a bunch for it.

    @justbishop – yes, the code display has been mangled by wp texturise, and contains a cpl small errors. Here it is clean:

    `
    //<![CDATA[
    function limitText(limitField, limitCount, limitNum) {
    if (limitField.value.length > limitNum) {
    limitField.value = limitField.value.substring(0, limitNum);
    } else {
    limitCount.value = limitNum – limitField.value.length;
    }
    }
    //]]>
    `

    `@ `

    “

    Incidentally, I think it’s best to place the script itself in entry.php, not post-form.php (assuming you’re also setting a character limit on replies). The reason for this is that it should only be loaded once, and if you place it in post-form.php it won’t be available on an individual activity page (ie. the page you get when you click the “View” link), but if you place it in entry.php it will be loaded when viewing the activity stream, and also when viewig the individual activity.

    A site I’m working on wants to use BuddyPress to feature the activity and work of its users. Is BuddyPress capable of doing this?

    The users in question already have profiles, posts and activity on the site, currently independent from BuddyPress. How do I get this activity to show up in users’ BuddyPress profiles? How do users use the BuddyPress Like plugin to ’like’ the work other users do? Finally, in following users & work that are of interest, how can a user’s followers & others their following be displayed in the sidebar, perhaps using a widget?

    Thanks in advance.

    Judging by the lack of information when I perform a search, I may be one of the few people that has tried to get these plugins playing nicely together. When all is sorted and the site is live, I’ll post up a link to hopefully inspire a few other sites to try them out together.

    Basically what I have is a standard WP multisite/BP configuration, to which I’ve installed the WooTumblog plugin at the network level and then added ‘function woo_tumblog_type’ and ‘function woo_tumblog_short_title’ to the functions.php file in the child theme used by my sub-sites. Both my main theme and child themes are heavily adapted from the BP Default theme.

    Somewhat frustrated by the lack of front-end publishing tools for WordPress and keen to use the WooTumblog dashboard (which uses javascript enabled panel changes depending on whether a user wishes to publish a video, image, quote, link or article), I decided to customise the admin area for users to look identical to the site’s front-end, then I removed all other dashboard widget boxes (using unset($wp_meta_boxes…) and all the admin sidebars and menus (using remove_submenu_page()) and also customised the admin bar.

    The result is a a user admin dashboard that looks as if it is a part of the main site. The configurations are triggered by user level – using <?php if ( current_user_can('manage_options') ) – so at a network level I can still see the full admin menu, but users only see the wootumblog dashboard widget and can toggle through to view a list of comments on their site or posts.

    I came slightly unstuck when I implemented the WPMU sitewide tags plugin which copies everything on the network into a single site which can them be used to produce cross-site tags, searches and display all the latest network posts. On the front end of my main site (where all the latest posts are displayed) I display a tumblog icon against each post based on its taxonomy (i.e. video, image, quote…) . I have built a ‘catch image’ function which displays the first image from a post and where there is no image (such as for a quote or video) it displays a default thumbnail.

    Everything works fine except I cannot get the custom taxonomy to reach the main site (or tag blog) so that I can then customise the presentation of these sub-site posts.

    I’ve been in contact with Ron Rennick (who maintains WPMU SWT) and Jeff Pearce (who is the woo themes developer behind wootumblog). They’ve both shared their advice, but I’ve not worked with classes, actions and filters so I’m finding it difficult translating their advice into tangible changes in my code.

    If anyone has a spare moment and would like to give it a go, here’s a link to Ron’s advice; http://wordpress.org/support/topic/getting-buddypress-and-sitewide-tags-to-play-nicely?replies=10

    And he refers to a post that he wrote which describes how to add a filter to solve the issue: http://wpmututorials.com/plugins/sitewide-tags-update/

    Also in conversation with Jeff (woothemes) this morning, he advised that I use the following snippet:

    `// Custom Taxonomy Tumblog Filter
    add_action(‘pre_get_posts’, ‘woo_taxonomy_tumblog_filter’ ); function woo_taxonomy_tumblog_filter( $query ) {

    global $wp_query;

    if ($query->is_home || $query->is_front_page) {

    $query->set(‘tax_query’, array( ‘taxonomy’ => ‘tumblog’ ));

    $query->parse_query();
    }

    return $query;

    }`

    I feel a little out of my depth trying to make this work. I can see that both plugins are working fine with BP, however sitewide tags is filtering out the custom taxonomy created by wootumblog and I need to add that filter back in.

    Anyone with any thoughts? I’ve been badgering Ron and Jeff all day, but been unable to confirm (a) which piece of code to add? and (b) which file to add it in?

    I didn’t like the the plugin solution since it wasn’t quite what I wanted so I created my own. I wanted to be able to put a link to a user profile where ever I want by displaying the users name. You could hard code this if you know the users name but what if you want it to be dynamic and work for any user? I came up with this simple solution which is easy even if you don’t know php.

    In the functions.php file add the following to the bottom.
    `
    function post_author_profile(){
    /* Return authors profile link*/
    echo( ‘‘); echo get_the_author(); echo(‘‘);
    }

    `

    Then simply include the following php line of code any where in loop-index.php where you’d like the current posts users name displayed as a link linking to their profile. It knows what post it’s referring to based on each one it’s printed in as it goes through the loop. I’m using it in the following code in loop-index.php
    `

    <div id="post-” >

    <a href="” title=”” rel=”bookmark”>

    `

    Live long and prosper.

    Hi, I’m having an issue with my front page. I’m finding that my users might want to post particularly long articles. It wouldn’t be a problem, except that I can’t seem to figure out how to have their front page posts cut off after a certain number of words and display something like “Read More…”

    Has anyone ran into a problem like this? Surely it’s something simple. I’m not sure if it’s an option somewhere in the BuddyPress Dashboard, or if I can download a plugin that can do something like that. I’m not sure where to look

    Thanks for any help.

    I dont’ know if this is the right forum for this, maybe over in the Multisite forums…but they never respond, so I’ll try my luck here because of the great community of support and feedback that is always present.

    I have author.php templates for all authors of posts on sub blogs but they only display for members who have authored a post on the subblog. I’d like to be able to force this template to show the author=member regardless of having a post or not.

    Basically all my author pages (subsite.com/author/usersame) on all sites are pseudo BP profiles…I’ve called in the member avatar with `bp_has_members(‘include=’.$post->post_author)` and basically laid out the entire page template like a bp member profile page.

    The problem i have, and I don’t know if this is specific the author.php template or what. But if a member doesn’t have published posts on the sublog then they get a blank page with no avatar or member associated components.

    How can I force this template to make author pages for all members with zero posts?

    Any suggestions. Would love to get a discussion going about this.

    Ok, so this has turned into a two part question.

    1. In my users activity feed (modified to show both @mentions, status updates, photos from bp-gallery etc) it shows guest posts as follows “@marty hey hows it going” — My Goal is to elinimate the @username and I’ve successfully done this with css by adding “Display: none;” on my “div.activity_data p a:first-child” style selector.

    As you can see this has obvious flaws, it hides any first link in the activity feed data, and its hiding my 1st photo on activity updates made by BP-Gallery.

    So, what I am trying to do, is add a (id=”remove_mention”) to the link that is generated by buddypress for the @mention so I can hide it.

    The closest thing I could find was in (bp-activitybp-activity-filters.php) but had no luck modifying it to include this “id=remove_mention” I could only get it to add the id to all posts.

    2. I have the post-form.php working correctly on profiles that are not the logged in users and am able to leave @mentions but having to manually type in the @mention before the message then post.

    I would like to include the displayed users mention id to the forms data before being posted, (e.g what I’m doing now “@marty hey hows it going?” would like to type “hey hows it going” and have the @marty attached before posting much like on this site here.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated, these are the last two major things I need to overcome before finishing up this site.

    I’m currently working on a social networking site and I’ve got almost everything working except for the profile activity feeds that display mentions / comments.

    The activity feeds are working and are showing status updates, group posts, etc. but I need there “Friends” to be able to come to a profile and Submit a comment that shows up on there “Wall” I guess we will call it.

    I know this mimics Facebook’s wall, but its just the least confusing way for the users.

    I’ve tried – http://buddydev.com/buddypress/using-activity-as-wire-in-buddypress-1-2-themes/ and Bp-Wire but they are just not doing what I want.

    Is there anyway for a user to come leave a comment, it show up on that users wall, and they can then reply to that comment and vice versa.

    Please any help would be greatly appricated, I see that this site does something simular, but still includes the @mention tag, How can I get that to work on my page minus the @mention before the post.

    Hey guys, I am trying to post a link to the current users blog posts in a widget. Right now I am able to make a link to the current LOGGED IN user, but I need it to be the DISPLAYED user. It needs to be http://www.mysite.com/author/DISPLAYEDUSERNAME/

    Any help is much appreciated thanks!!!

    I would like my user profile pages to be more like this – http://www.fashiolista.com/style/chiaraferragni/

    If I could just get the users posts (only from the current site, they can’t add posts anywhere else) to show as the main item in the user profile page that would be fantastic.

    I am using citizen kane theme, although would happily swap as it seems to be trickier than others to edit.

    Thanks :)
