Not sure, but it is probably done in the Buddypress menu.
Buddypress – General Settings – Disable activity stream commenting on blog and forum posts? YES
    and/or
Buddypress – Component Setup – Activity Streams: Allow users to post activity updates and track all activity across the entire site. NO

Don’t forget the author.php. I use it in the most creative ways! As mentioned above you can use Gforms for frontend posting, or even allow your subscribers only access to Writing Post admin page only and then display the users’ “blog” posts on their author.php page (yoursite.com/author/username).

You could even embed the gform in the author.php for loggedin authors and display posts for logged out. You can go as far as customizing that author.php template to add the parts of the buddypress member profile, (I think you can replicate the entire member profile on there if you really wanted to) and voila you have user blogs without multisite and blog within user profile. Heck you could even make the author.php template very blog like and include a dedicated sidebar and widgets that only pertain to that author. It takes some..(alot of) tweaking but it’s doable, so good luck!

Try reading up on enabling a third-party provider for WordPress’ embedding capability:
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Embeds#How_Can_I_Add_Support_For_More_Websites.3F

If you want to use Wistia code, which I’m guessing you need to use the “ or “ tags, you’ll need to bypass the activity filters that are in place by default, so malicious content will not get the chance to be executed.

If you trust your userbase, you can disable these filters by reading this:
    https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/make-users-able-to-use-and-in-their-posts

    Or this:
    https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/embedded-video-in-forums-and-streams/

If you’re planning on just embedding the Wistia video on a blog post, just enable some form of WordPress plugin that allows you to embed content like this:
    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/embed-object/

Thank you so very much for your help.

The first bit does as expected and removes the profile all together. It’s a temporary fix until I can locate the source of the problem, but not a good permanent fix. Defining the default component as profile I’m guessing is intended to set the default profile component differently so that it becomes accessible. I’m not having any luck with that. Attempts to access the profile default to the home page. Any thoughts about it?

I can see that one of the problems I have is with the group wiki plugin. Posts to the group wikis and their responses show up in the activity stream. I think I can just block those and manage that problem, but the other entry that shows in the activity stream, I’m pretty sure is from core buddy press functionality. Replies to entries made to the “Home” form (displayed in the activity stream) also show up in the user’s profile and are visible to users who are not members of the group when they are not logged into the website. When they are logged in this problem disappears. Any thoughts?

I’m pretty new to BuddyPress, so please be kind :)

    I am developing: http://www.elonscloset.com using BP 1.2.5.2

I have disabled access to the Dashboard for all members except admins, but want all logged in users to be able to create a blog post (in addition to their activity posts), as I will be soliciting articles, etc. from them.

I have created a page to display the posts (Articles).

Here’s the question: how do I create a page where they can add and/or edit them, without giving them access to the Dashboard?

    Thanks in advance!

it’s possible and I am sort of working on something like this but when I say working managing to map out all the problems I hadn’t envisaged. At the moment there is a manual-ish approach that can be taken where one (admin) can set profile fields check boxes that correspond to existing post tags, user makes a selection of the tags that interest them and then a post loop is run against the user id and the tags they have selected and posts displayed, I wanted to try and take that further and make it less manual but I may try to run up the widget first then try and build the rest around it

    Hi beraike22

Thanks for this, unfortunately it doesnt really solve the problem. What this will do is allow users to register to a group on signup.

I want to store metadata in a users profile taken from a pre-populated custom field. So that I can use the same custom field to tag posts and therefore establishing a link between users and posts. So if a user says they are interested in science fiction books, then in theory I could present a list of pages tagged with science fiction can be displayed, etc,.. the dispalying isnt the hard part, its creating the metadata which is consistant throughout posts and users.

    Thanks for your help

The second coding round for routes is in. Routes can now be edited, activity comments can be posted on routes and routes can be included in blog posts (depending on the privacy setting). Also, coordinates can now be attached to blog posts and a map can then be displayed on the actual blog post. For both post and route maps, a shortcode creator has been integrated into the Add Media button on write/edit screens in the backend.

    @lph2005
Thanks for All the suggestions Cube Points seems to have all I need for now but I have a couple of questions about it, if anyone knows how to solve it:

Anyway here is a couple of questions:
    1. Is there anyway to add a text popup or something that says “Congratulations you just earned x points!” (like Yahoo Answers)
    2. I want to format ever users profile page like this: http://avatarthelastairbenderonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Profile.jpg As you can see I’m probably going to need a list of Template Tags, Like the points which should be like you mentioned, and I’ll also need to find the code to display their rank and possibly rank image.
    3. This might be off topic, but how would I detect whether or not the user is a moderator on any forum on the profile page so I can display an image identifying them as a moderator?
    4. I also want to display the users stats in the Forum Posts, and on the sidebar in their User Control Panel (A Custom area I made once a user logs in:) see here for an example of how I am trying to get the forum topic to look: http://avatarthelastairbenderonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Forum-Topic.jpg

Has anyone tried that kind of thing.

Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.

Hello. Before I begin, let me inform all of you that I really don’t know any PHP :). I am presently working on our small town’s semi social networking site. Initially, I wanted to create a semi DailyBooth feature which means that there should be front end posting and image uploading and no back-end access for users. However, most themes didn’t allow me to pursue it: P2 does not have an image upload form although there is a front end posting, Buddypress P2 does have the media uploader but the process of inserting the image in the post is so inconvenient, lastly, there was this GTD theme which almost answered my prayer but after the image or file is uploaded, it only shows the link to the file but it does not display the image.

The only thing I can think of is to create a forum. Mr. Boones already helped me with his forum-attachment plugin so that users can upload an image in their comments and forum posts. He helped me activate his plugin to only a particular forum, not globally. However, what I wish more is to modify a particular forum… i.e. no title , just the textarea and an image upload button just for the semi Dailybooth forum. Is that even possible?

I hope you all would understand what I’m trying to say here :). I would be more than willing to elaborate further :)

Hopefully someone else will chime in, but the only thing you may lose by not importing the bb_usermeta would be any customisation a user has done to their “display name” or “nice name”; it’d default back to that person’s username. They’d have to just type their preferred display name back in to WordPress or bbPress, so nothing tricky. So, I don’t think you need to.. probably.

I get the feeling you’re aware of this, but I’d suggest having a test-run of this to find out how well it works (or doesn’t) before doing it on your live database. Also, check that bb_usermeta and wp_usermeta have the same columns, you may need to massage the import a bit.

Once you get the users into WordPress, and you can log in as one of them, we can see about associating existing bbPress forum posts with a particular BuddyPress Group’s forum. I’ve not done that myself so hopefully someone who has can guide.

BuddyPress -> I cannot figure out what is going on or how to get this to function correctly.

    Back Story:
I am testing the use of BuddyPress as the new community format for a website. I converted a very large PHPbb database (13K+ users, 15K+ topics, & over 250K posts) to bbpress 0.70 then upgraded from each version of bbpress to current 1.0.2

Then I added BuddyPress plugin. I re-searched & figured out that I would need to create groups in order for the group forums to work.

    Problem:
    1) The forums still do not display when you click on ‘Forums’ (sitedomain.tld/forums/) from the main navigation link. However, they do display when you click on forum link in the group section (sitedomain.tld/groups/1/forum/)

    2) Users/Members do not display (with the exception of the administrator) when you click on ‘Members’ (sitedomain.tld//members/) – I would like to have all (13K+) members display. How does one handle this.

I realize that you are suppose to have on problem or question per submission – however, I believe that these are interconnected situations.

Any assistance toward clearing this up would be greatly appreciated.

Hello there. I’d like to display the Group Memberships of the person making a forum post in their forum post by including the avatars of each group under their post. My users will be members of a limited number of groups, probably no more than 12 in all, and most will be members of 3 – 6.

Could any of you kind souls point me in the right direction ? I presume I need to modify the loop used to generate the forum posts but I’m not certain about how to do that, nor do I know how to assemble the correct collection of images. I currently use the BuddyPress Forums Extras – Signatures by Rich Fuller and I wondered if a post could even be given two signatures, one containing these Avatars.

I’m extremely new to BuddyPress and fairly new to WordPress so I apologise if this question has been asked before. I tried a bit of a search but I couldn’t find anything. I have a working knowlege of CSS & HTML and I can pick up bits of PHP fairly quickly and if you can help me you will earn my eternal gratitude.

I have just launched a pet project of mine http://mychatbox.me. It is a micro blogging community where members can create their own Chatbox (micro blog) on the network. For your status updates and micro blog posts, you are limited to 200 characters for posting and replies. No one else but the administrator and moderators of the micro blog can add top level content to it but members can reply.

For a full list of features, check the home page. On members profiles eg: http://mychatbox.me/mychatbox/, users can add their location to their profile and it is displayed on a google map similar to buddypress profiles (not using gpress). Members can also add other social media channels they belong to and it will be displayed on their profile header with icons.

I got the idea of My Chatbox from http://wpmu.org where @pollyplummer wrote a blog post http://wpmu.org/how-to-build-a-mini-twitter-site-with-buddypress-your-open-source-microblogging-platform/. Thanks @pollyplummer

@hnla, @boonebgorges, @r-a-y, @nuprn1, @johnjamesjacoby and @dwenaus were the main contributors (not forgetting @apeatling) to the site with their plugins (some of them modified) and they helped quite allot by answering my silly questions on the BP forums. The site is not finished yet – hence the beta text on the logo. Still need to implement a mobile version as well…@modemlooper

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hello,

Currently when logged in and viewing your own profile, buddypress allows you to post updates to your activity stream. How can I disable this? I only want the stream to show blog posts and comment posts, but not show custom updates the user might put in.

    Thank you in advance

That sounds like you actually need a custom front page, but what do mean by ‘click it’ that’s a rather loose term click what?

Why does that page not simply have the text/content you want with a simple link to the registration page and also a simple login, registered users will login and be directed to their profile page by the plugin mentioned earlier. What you do with the main site home link is another question, suppose it’s possible to have that custom frontpage display your intro page to all logged out users and once logged in if a member navigates back to that page it will display ? activity loop / main site blog posts

I have my users using a custom field to display thumbnail images for their blog posts (long story) on a 3.0.1 Multiuser install. Is there any way to display these instead of the user’s avatar for their blog posts in the main site activity stream? I can’t seem to find a template file where this would be possible? I tried the following, but it’s not seeming to have any effect. I’m guessing because I need to somehow pull custom field info into the stream?

    Hey all :)

I’m on the home stretch of getting my WP+BP site officially opened, and thought I’d post it here for critique. The idea of the site is a BP based community of buyers and sellers of crafts and “work-at-home-mom” (WAHM) made items, as well as hosting for WAHM shops using WP 3.0.1 in multiuser mode.

    http://www.clothunderground.com

The Community: based on Buddypress. Pretty self explanatory.

The Shops: each shop is a child blog of the main site. I’m using WP Custom CSS to allow users to make cosmetic changes to the Blix theme, and eShop for the eCommerce solution. WordPress seems pretty overwhelming to my users, so I’ve also written a custom library of tutorials (in the footer of the main site pages). I haven’t yet found a plugin that makes the hosting term payment/shop creation process automated, so I’m doing that manually at this time.

Extras: I know that I haven’t really done much in the way of customizing the default BP theme, but it’s only because I’ve been busy doing functional customizations…

    * The Street: I’m using the main site’s blog function as a classifieds post for members to buy/sell their used items on (a very popular feature for this type of audience). I’ve used Adminimize to limit what the users see on the add post screen, custom fields that allow them to enter URLs to 4 remotely hosted images (Photobucket), disabled file (image) uploading to keep my disk space, and another plugin to keep them from seeing everyone else’s posts in the admin panel post list.

    * Member Feedback System: It’s important on a site like this that buyers and sellers can leave feedback for one another with details on how the transaction went for others to see. I pieced something together (see the ridiculous process here: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/any-plugin-similar-to-ebays-user-feedback-member-rating-feedback) that seems like it will work beautifully! Check out the “feedback” button on my test user’s profile: http://www.clothunderground.com/members/test

    * Customized Groups Page: I just pieced this together the best I could. Nothing else out there was working for my audience, who are more often than not coming from vBulletin based sites. Buddypress’ group/forum system is still uber confusing for them, but this was the best I could do.

    * Sitewide Search: Using the Sitewide Search Pages plugin, I’ve created a child blog that pulls in info on posts published across the CU network. Shoppers are able to search using the form in the header, and browse a list of all CU shop items matching their search. There’s also a wordpress.com style tags page that displays all tags used in item posts sitewide, for a different shopping experience.

    * CU Points: I’m using Cubepoints and CP Buddypress integration to award points to members for activity. Normal members can use theirs to buy anything that anyone (in a CU shop or on The Street) is selling for points, and shop owners can use points to purchase featured shop ad space or up to 20% off of their hosting fees.

Anyway, please check it out and let me know what you think! Small changes might be happening throughout the day, but it’s pretty much ready for the world right now!

I’ve found quite a few posts on registration and profile fields but none exactly about my problem (which makes me think I’m missing something very basic or others would have posted about it.)

    I’m running WP+Buddypress both current.

In the WP Profile there are separate fields for User Name, First Name, Last Name and Nick name with the ability to choose which you wish displayed. If these fields are changed in the WP Profile they are displayed properly in BuddyPress. But I see no way to allow users to access these fields in their Edit Profile page in BP or more importantly to include them in the BP registration form.

I definitely need the First Name and Last Name fields to be separate as they are in the WP profile and I want to allow users to choose what form of name is displayed.

Is anyone familiar with this issue?

Is there something basic I’m missing about the integration of WP and BP?

Any links to suggested sources or other guidance greatly appreciated.

Can we change whats in the main section of the screen? Currently it displays blog posts for my users. I would prefer it show a more FB like look, and display activities, such as status updates, photo posts, etc?

Also, can it be set to display only the activity of people in your friend list, and not the activities of everyone on the whole site?

“Slowing down does not mean dying. :) It means they get tired. Tired devs make mistakes. they also have a big job – half the users want faster dev, the other half doesn’t. Vocal people want this change, two months later, more vocal people want the last change ripped out. See the problem there?”

Very understandable. Solution: Stop listening to all the feature requests and all the questions about forums/bbpress, event management, galleries, etc. Focus on the core: users, posts, comments. Make those solid and flexible, standardized as much as possible on what is already in WordPress, but with the member management and privacy/security you need for a social network. What are the minimum requirements to run a social network on top of WordPress? Boil it down. All the rest is for theme and plugin developers. Activity stream etc. is just one way to display data. Without a solid, coherent core it will only become a bigger mess as everybody piles on their hacks and ideas.

“There is almost no benefit whatsoever of Friends within BuddyPress …”

Buddypress was supposed to be social networking added to blogging. Friends could form groups and work together in blogs. Friending itself is probably most relevant for internal email. The one thing you need to make that work is beefed up member management beyond default WordPress:

    – full real names instead of anonymous meaningless usernames
    – extendable, flexible member data fields
    – ways to manage member lists
    – ways to manage member roles
    – ways to manage relations between members
    – privacy and security controls on member data
    – front-end functionality for members to manage their own profile data
    – front-end functionality for members to manage their relationships
    – etc.

None of these points get the attention they deserve. Again, if you have the three solid elements (1) members (“users”), (2) posts, (3) comments, all the rest is just a matter of displaying the data in different views, including forum view.

The shift in focus from blogging to the old-fashioned bbpress forum structure further derailed the project. Adding social networking to blogging should have been the main focus.

“the best setup is having either Forums or Activity.”

I use neither. I’m trying to structure my custom 1.1.3-based theme around member profiles, blogs and groups with group blogs. My activity stream just reflects what’s happening on the profiles, blogs and groups; it’s not a discussion thread in itself – I think I originally broke the ajax and had to remove reply buttons etc…
