ParticipantHi James,
Wow – you’ve done some beautiful things with Salutation! Looks great!
I, too am simplifying the forums – site wide, general only (no group forums).
Thank you for your voice of experienced wisdom and the usage tips!
🙂

Participantupdate: reinstalled wp 3.5 and bp 1.6.2 and all is well with default bp template, accessing setup pages, registering via the top toolbar, accessing the forum, etc.
But I am now back to square one with the wp meta widget ‘register’ link where it takes me to myprimarysite.com/blogs/create, not myprimarysite.com/register link, like it should. I verified the pages setup in bp, saved it again to be sure, still the same issue. And on the primary site the meta register link goes to the correct form. On all sites the top toolbar register and log in links work just fine.
——
To others: If you are experiencing a similar situation like I started with, verify your php.ini and/or htaccess file setup in your root directory, to possibly save yourself a lot of time. Also, backup, backup and backup!! And don’t accidently delete a backup folder unless you know for sure you won’t need them anymore!December 12, 2012 at 10:44 pm #147229In reply to: [Resolved] My Join Group button is acting funny
@mercime
ParticipantChecked on Windows7 using Safari and you’re right, when you click on the Join Group in the individual group’s page, the link doesn’t change to “Leave Group”. However, stay on the same page and click on a different item nav – Members – and you’ll see that “Leave Group” text appear. Same thing happens when you click on “Leave Group” link, text doesn’t change to “Join Group”. But go to another item nav page e.g. Forums and you’ll see notice that you’ve left the group and the text in link changed to “Join Group”.

ParticipantLast time I checked, Woo Canvas theme even with the BP Template Pack doesn’t work with BuddyPress… JS conflicts. Please check theme author’s forums if they have even resolved this issue.
Best way to test your BP install is to use the BP Default theme to check if everything — group creation, member registration etc — is in working order before using another theme.
Re S2Member plugin, have you searched or asked at the s2member plugin’s forums? I’ve seen some pointers there about limiting access there before.

KeymasterThe problem is you installed both the bbPress plugin and enabled the “Discussion Forums” component in BuddyPress.
Since you’re using bbPress for your forums, do what I suggested here:

ParticipantHi ray. I tried your link but still have the same problem. After creating the group and forum thru the group, i have to go back into the group admin and tick the forum box again to make it work. it seems to be creating the forum; just not associating the group with it the first time around. Thanks for your efforts

December 12, 2012 at 7:00 pm #147206In reply to: Reversing the order of forum posts within a topic
dylancasey
ParticipantI am trying to do exactly this: change the order of the posts displayed for a topic in a forum. I understand that I can do this by setting the ‘order’ parameter to DESC in bp_has_forum_topic_posts. What is eluding me is how to properly over-ride the function on my functions.php (or bp-custom.php) so as to just change the passed arguments.
I’ve tried adding the following to my functions.php file (an it doesn’t work):
function my_bp_has_forum_topic_posts($args) {
$args = 'order=DESC';
return $args;
}
add_filter( 'bp_has_forum_topic_posts','my_bp_has_forum_topic_posts');
Thanks for the help in advance.
December 12, 2012 at 4:04 pm #147191In reply to: Spam users
Deceth
ParticipantMy site for Battle City was getting hit hard with spam user registrations. I wrote a post about it in the forums here.
At some point I realized, I will never defeat the spam user registrations. My efforts helped to limit them, but not eliminate the problem. So I decided, maybe what I need to do is limit the impact. The spam user registrations are still there, but now I barely see them. This is what I do:
To limit the spam user registrations, I use “Buddypress Humanity” and “SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam”. “Askimet” then picks up on most of the spam comments posted by those who still manage to register.
Next, I use “BuddyPress Block Activity Stream Types”. With this plugin I hide all new user registration messages from the Activity stream.
Finally, I use “User Spam Remover” plugin to go in once every couple of weeks to mass delete 95% of all spam users.
This doesn’t eliminate the problem, but makes life more manageable and keeps most of the spam users out of sight unless they manage to get past Askimet and post some messages.

@mercime
ParticipantBut are you suggesting that after using BP Template Pack once it is a good idea to turn it off and then re-up everything via FTP?
@bennygill No. Like I said above, do that “unless it was explicitly stated in your theme install instructions” because some BP-compatible themes do not require the BP Template Pack plugin anymore.
It looks like the developer has changed some configurations because the topic/forum category links go to 404 page. bbPress plugin is activated. At this point, can’t second-guess what the developer is doing. Since you hired the person, you should ask him/her what’s going on with the site.

ParticipantI am using Tersus theme from ThemeForest (which is advertised as BuddyPress theme).
My permalinks are set to postname.
BuddyPress is installed , to create forum it’s asking to install bbpress.
So the bbpress (without the BuddyPress) forum works.
But when I go to the BuddyPress newly created pages (groups, forums,members) I get those problems. Can’t create groups, can’t create forum, can’t send private message to memebers. Error message :There was an error saving group details, please try again.

ParticipantI am using the latest BP/WP versions.
Right after the installation you see this activation page asking for an activation key. But there are absolutely no instruction on how to get that key!Trying to create a group, get the following message all the time: “There was an error saving group details, please try again.”
So can’t create groups = can’t create a single forum.

fitnessblogger
ParticipantHi Guys,
I am also using Salutation theme for my website http://fitnessblogger.net
although I agree the learning curve is quite steep for this theme… it does have some great features.. and I am slowly making sense of some of them…
The forums were a pain to setup but now we have simplified them and we are only using the group forums for our site it seems to work better?? http://fitnessblogger.net/groups/
This may help with the BuddyBar http://wpmu.org/daily-tip-how-to-disable-the-buddypress-admin-buddy-bar/
There are a few options for spam / splogger protection… we are using WangGuard.. again this takes a little bit of use to understand and get set up but does seem to help us..
Hope this helps a bit.. and happy to chat more if you would like
PS. I am not an expert just learning as I go along 🙂
Kind Regards
James

Paul Wong-Gibbs
KeymasterThe WordPress error message says you need to get its parent theme; this is probably Tersus itself, and I found it on Github:Â https://github.com/splorp/tersus/
Install and activate that plugin, and the error will clear for the child theme.
Please also don’t ping most of the core BuddyPress developers on Twitter in future; these forums are the best place for support.

ParticipantHello @mercime,
Thank you for the help.
I’m working with a developer to try and get this fixed, so I have shown him this thread and he might chime in too.
The Skematik theme did explicitly state to use the BP Template Pack so that is why I am using that. Also BuddyPress did not work without it installed. But are you suggesting that after using BP Template Pack once it is a good idea to turn it off and then re-up everything via FTP?
I want sitewide forums, but the developer sometimes turns on the ‘group’ forums. Not sure why, I guess he has his own reasons while working. But the only difference when group forum is turned off is that it has a “New Topic” button at the top. When group forums are turned off that disappears.
The forum ‘Make Money Online’ is a category. And I made a forum inside that category called ‘General’. That was only for testing purposes. If a different config of forums would work please let me know.
Not sure about the link you posted (http://thecashlab.com/discussion/forum/)? When I visit that it takes me to ‘page not found’.
Not sure what other information is needed. Please tell me what else you require and I’ll let you know asap.
Thanks,

ParticipantAs you said, it is a WPML bug. They don’t have a work around for me. They reported it as a bug and hopefully next versions of buddypress multilingual plugin won’t do the same!

You did a good job helping me confirm that the problem is not with buddypress but it comes from WPML.
Thank you.

December 10, 2012 at 6:58 pm #146989In reply to: [Resolved] Why no topics showing on home page?
@mercime
ParticipantPlease do not bump your posts.
You’re already using what’s supposedly a BP-compatible theme, skematik, so I would presume that you do not need to install the BP Template Pack plugin anymore unless it was explicitly stated in your theme install instructions. If so, deactivate the BP Template Pack plugin and re-upload your skematik theme via FTP/cpanel/etc to make sure that the theme’s customized BP template files are clean.
http://thecashlab.com/community/ looks more like the BP Group Forums OR you have created a front page community and added the shortcode for the forum topics there. http://thecashlab.com/discussion/forum/make-money-online/ is a category of http://thecashlab.com/discussion/forum/ of your Sitewide Forums. More information about your installation would help us help you.
