and I am confident this is progressing soon or later.

Participant“why not also give a user his own forum” – let’s imagine how many tables are going to be created in DB per blog and per forum
but then, there’s the multi-DB plugin. btw, speaking of bbpress, Matt is calling for more people to help out

ParticipantDoes anyone know if bbpress ever got to the point where we could give each blog their own bbpress like we do with groups?
I’ve asked on their forums, done the google thing, but never could get an answer.

KeymasterHi Kevin
In BuddyPress, Forums are an element of a Group, rather than standalone. You *can* install a standalone forum but it requires more work.
Anyway, once the forum has been set up (via the admin pages in the /wp-admin/ backend), you go into a Group, there should be a Forum tab. You can create threads from this page.

Specifically, do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress running? Also, I’m not sure if that’s your browser settings theming the page, or whether you’re running a custom theme. Revert to the default if you’ve customised the theme as a test.

Participanteach time the system get transmited a new name, username, group name, forum name etc, it hit the new name with the existing urls *(slugs) and see if it exists…
the reason why you have yoursite.com/members/nexia is that if i start my own blog with /nexia as the name, i could… but if you apply the technique used by Xevo, i could not… i would have to use something else like /nexia_blog …

ParticipantI do hope you both mean buddypress 1.1.3, going back in time is really bad..
Steps for bugs.
1. Make sure you run the latest stable versions (wpmu/buddypress).
2. See if problem is already fixed in trac or in the forums.
3. If everything else fails, make a ticket on the trac and wait.
If no one else got this problem, it most likely means that there’s something different in your install.
December 5, 2009 at 1:41 pm #58048Jean-Pierre Michaud
Participantmy opinion?… offer both solutions as plugins…
bbPress can be integrated to WPMU, we already have examples of that… why not offer a complete solution for the integration instead of two HowTo and a plugin…
and the BP forum version is quite different from bbPress, i don’t know why it is still named bbPress… why not having it as a plugin as well?
so when we decide to offer forums for groups we use one version, and if we want a global forum, we use bbPress, and if we want both, we use both…
because right now we can not use both versions at the same time… i would.

ParticipantAgree with you on the option.
Rather than using “forums” slug for group forums directory, I will rather use it for external forums. Instead, I will consider using group-forums slug for that.
Again, why use two copies of bbpress if you want external forums, why not use a single copy but with the tighter integration.
Well, why I said It should not be Integrated.
Currently,Is there anyway for the site admin to manage all the forums on a buddypress at one place.No.
Can You manage all the topics from one place, no , you have to visit individual groups to manage it.
bbpress has been in existence ,before even the conception of buddypress,so how about the people who are already using it as a standalone software,or on their wordpress/wpmu site.We may not force them to install buddypress for using/keep using forum.
I hope ,There are other various reasons why It should not be merged.
But again,I too wish ,there should be more better integration.
December 5, 2009 at 11:54 am #58044Sven Lehnert
ParticipantThere should be a option at the admin site, to select standard forum view,or buddypress groups view.
For many people I think the bbpress integration into wordpress (make bbpress look the same as wp) is just to heave. So they jump to some other forum software.
In the and most of them are missing forum community features.
In the moment you have to rewrite bbpress plugins to use them in the puddypress bbpress installation. Or have two install with two admin sites.
December 5, 2009 at 11:38 am #58042Brajesh Singh
ParticipantI seriously believe ,these pieces of software should never merge.
Personally,I prefer external forums much more than the internal integration.Again, for people who are looking for easy install(the internal integration is well done by Andy, Kudos to him) internal integration is good, but in most of the circumstances we are going to need an external forum, as it is much more clean and easy to use rather than the group associated forum.
I believe, the integration of bbpress with buddypress will get better in future, as buddypress grows. But considering current situations, It is not a good idea to merge both the pieces of software.
no offenses, my personal thoughts only

Participantmany thanks for your feedback Ray !
I think the page “textbp.org/forums” does not bring much value to the website. Also for the average user it is difficult to understand what the purpose of that specific page is.
Therefore I suggested a re-design of that specific page:
https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/1389
Maybe this helps to utilize the forums and also get the user to better understand what is the idea behind a “Group-forum” ?
We are all more or less “living” within the Internet – we are programmers, designers, WP-experts, Professional Bloggers, etc. , but lets put ourselves in the shoes of the average internet-user – would he be able to understand and also use the service which we are trying to offer ?

r-a-y
KeymasterErich, I replied to your ticket on Trac about this, but thought I’d post my response here as well.
In practice, Forums are for focused discussion. Forum posts are not threaded and you must visit the actual forum post to reply.
Activity updates are freeform and have no real structure, but are threaded and can be replied to without having to visit the actual activity permalink.
However, I’m guessing (like you) that most people will reply to activity comments, instead of the forum topic.
The creation of activity comments have made the forums component somewhat less relevant now.
This is kind of related to a ticket I opened about the usability factor of having too many ways to communicate:

Participantyeah, when i make little hacks, i definitely note them… and leave a comment with my name on that line so that i can just do a multi file search and quickly pull up all my edits.
that being said, i try not to make them unless i have to.
so yeah, just wanted to make sure this was noted in the forums if anyone toggles that privacy switch and gets scared about their activity feed “breaking.” i was scared i’d broken something irreparably (and needed to reinstall everything) before tracking down that tiny if clause.
thanks for the response xevo

ParticipantWell you can auto join members to a group, so that you can use that groups forum as a main, but this hasn’t been done before, so can’t say how well this will work.
I personally also have bbpress as a seperate install and used it’s deep integration.

ParticipantForums are now linked with your groups, so you first need to make a group and that group wil contain a forum. It’s as easy as that. Unfortunately if you want a standard (classic) forum, you will have to install bbpress seperately and just use deep integration with that.

MemberHi,
For some reason I’m also experiencing the same problem with setting up my forum.
I created a fresh installation of WordPress MU and Buddypress, then I setup the forum as a fresh installation and it shows on my site but I cannot do anything with it.
There doesn’t seem to be anyway to add items to the forum, discussions, topics etc.
My address is http://club.fenpaddle.co.uk
I’m not very technical but I’ve managed to get this far and I’ve also setup another wordpress website at http://www.fenpaddle.co.uk.
Can someone please suggest what I should be doing next?
Many thanks
Roly

ParticipantHey Jeff,
can you install BuddyPress on your website (including your Privacy-Component) and we can test the functionality then at your website ?
That would be a great way in order to test it.
If you wish, we can also make some “bug-posts” or suggestions into your Discussion-Forum or wherever you like us to do so.
Gonna see if we can blow it up
