KeymasterAs much as I can tell, being one of those English-speaking imperialists to which you refer, WordPress has a good range of i18n stuff if developers use the right functions. If you think WordPress and BuddyPress seriously lack in these areas, then please by all means start a specific discussion thread on each product’s forums or file trac tickets/bug reports/patches.
Back on topic, I think socialpreneur’s on the money with this.

KeymasterSounds like your MySQL database connection details aren’t proper. However, if the rest of your WPMU site works…
Was your previous bbpress install in a seperate database? (i.e. not in the same one as wpmu/buddypress)

KeymasterI’m about 10000% percent sure that I saw an upgrade function which renamed these for you. I can’t find it. I’m sure that apeatling also posted it as a code snippet on the forums. Can’t find that either. /sadface
My site appears to be using -full still, both on the site, files and in the database. Wondering if it should only use -bpfull when you upload a new avatar or something.
I’m marking this as ‘not resolved’ as whilst you have posted a workaround for your site, I’d like to clear this properly

ParticipantHi John – thanks for the detailed response. I did read the documentation. The problem is – and I didn’t realize this until after my first attempt at the upgrade was finished – that documentation doesn’t appear to cover the scenario of an existing, integrated bbPress setup with bbPress stored in a *different* database. So, initially, I tried to choose the existing installation. When that didn’t work, I went back into admin and chose the option that allows you to try again with a fresh installation. What I’m trying to fix now is a *new* bbPress installation – but with existing groups.
Certainly, what you describe makes absolute sense. So now, I’m just looking for a resolution. I’m not concerned about existing forum posts; I think we can start fresh.
I’m looking now at the database. In wp_bp_groups_groupmeta, I see id and group_id.
In wp_bp_groups, I see id and enable_forum.
But enable_forum is the boolean for that checkbox. I don’t see where the forum_id is stored; it’s not listed as a field in either of those tables. Do I need to look at the bbpress table? How is the forum id matched up with the group id, since that seems to be the issue? Presumably if I delete the fields for that metadata, then disable the forum option for each of the groups, then re-enable, it should create new forums, yes? But where do I find that forum ID metadata, or can I actually simply delete the metadata for each of the groups that has a forum?

KeymasterIn BuddyPress, all forums are still tied to groups, but now there is a group directory to assemble forums and topics in one central location.

KeymasterI recommend reading https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-discussions/buddypress-forum/ if you haven’t already…
Peterkirn, did you choose a new installation or an existing one when you updated?
Here’s what’s happening, and how to fix it.
Since you picked new installation, your existing groups forums won’t work, because the forum_id’s they want to post to don’t exist in your new installation.
Basically, New installation = New database tables
If your old forums don’t have any important or relevent topics, or any at all, go back and forth between your “wp_bp_groups” table and your “wp_bp_groups_groupmeta” table, and remove the groupmeta entries with the group_id’s of your existing groups, that have any forum_id.
When you disable and enable the forums, it isn’t creating a new forum for them, it’s just turning off the ability. If you created a forum for an old group, and then create a new installation, the new database tables will be empty and your BuddyPress forums will look at those tables for data. If you use an existing installation, then BuddyPress will continue to use the old bbPress tables and allow an external bbPress installation to access them on its own, while letting the bbPress included with BuddyPress use it for its own purposes.

I’m using the child them that came with it, and modifying it only slightly. It doesn’t work out of the box on a users blog. The members section, groups, forums, and blogs directories show blank pages under the new blog. Like so http://www.domain.com/newblog/members ..
It shows nothing. So I’m currently trying to copy over the subfolders from the parent theme to see if that helps. I thought that you only had to replicate the files that you wanted to change so I’ll be pretty disappointed if that works.
Everything else works fine, and all of the things on the link you sent appear to be included.

ParticipantNow I feel bad that I ran out of time in late August / September and was unable to contribute to the test process, but that’s how it goes some of the time.
The reason I ultimately opted for a fresh install, even with existing groups, was that I discovered the option to *migrate* an existing install a) left bbpress as a separate install, which I didn’t want, and b) because we had opted to put bbpress’s tables in a database separate from the wordpress mu database.
So, the question is, how do we take these existing 25 groups and give them forums to connect to in the new bbpress-in-buddypress setup?

ParticipantOk…by unchecking the forum option for my group and saving, then checking it again seems to have solved the problem..thanks

Participantcopgarden: What were you upgrading from? How was your forum set up prior to the upgrade? I’m guessing there must be something different in your setup relative to mine.
Update – I have tried creating a NEW group and posting to that. That works fine. So I suspect that perhaps the issue is that the previous groups are trying to point to our old forums installation? I just need to figure out how to revert our existing 25 groups to whatever
In the database, how does BuddyPress 1.1 point groups at the appropriate forum in its new integrated bbPress install?
Actually, as I think about this, it makes sense that this didn’t work. Presumably, when you opt for a fresh install, it sets up bbPress inside buddypress but does not try to create any new forums. So how can I force those groups to create new forums, I wonder, if checking / unchecking doesn’t work?
On the same lines, for some reason – even though I opted to do a fresh install – the Forums link on the main homepage is still trying to point to our old forum install (that is, domain.com/forums).

ParticipantYep that fixed it for me, thank you! Just disable and re-enable forums option in each group admin.

ParticipantHi John,
You mean in the admin for one of my actual groups, correct, not the admin for the whole site?
I’ve tried disabling, then re-enabling the forums option in one of my groups. Unfortunately, this seems to have no effect – same symptom. And nothing showing up in my Web error log, either, so I’m having a tough time even telling what’s wrong.
Is there a brute-force way to reset the groups’ forum option to zero, perhaps in a way that would be more effective than just unchecking this option? Any other way to gather some data on what may be happening here? Thanks!

To get a forum you must first create a group.
Did you activate “forums” in BP component config; ?

KeymasterI really need bbattachments for my BP community, and I’ve already started work on porting it over to BuddyPress. There are a few hurdles to overcome, but I don’t think it will take too much longer. I’ll post more when I’ve got something for others to test.

ParticipantI’m having an issue with child themes. I created a new one as my default for all new blogs. When I enable it on a new blog the directories for members.. groups.. etc.. are all blank pages. What gives?! I didn’t change any of that, Its not a style issue either because it just doesn’t return any html. The buddy press bar on the top is working?
I’m at a loss. Is this by design?
..update.. I just changed the links back to the home theme manual in a revised header.php. Seems a little weird that the parent theme has links that are relative to the current blog for the directories. Wouldn’t it make more sense for those to be relative to the default domain so that they continue to work when a child is created? Or is there a circumstance when an added blog will have separate members groups and forums?

ParticipantI did this with 1.0 but had lots of problems with compatibility problems with IE. I’m looking forward to rebuild 1.1 to a horizontal menu. If possible I’ll change it so that the userbar/optionsbar gets integrated in other parts of the page. I’ve got a website focused on forums and P2-twitter-esque functionality.
But I haven’t got that much time on my hands so perhaps I can find a developer for it.

ParticipantI’m new to BP but I’ve learnt that some things in the code are contextually bound. Something higher up in the hierarchy may be missing.
I’ll want to do the same thing tho. Can you explain what code you took from where?

Participant@ Mariusooms: Hahaha… I sent it as an email but perhaps he looked me up!

I’m not sure if an open source movement wants to add money into the mix. But I’d pay $100 for a working version of bb-attachments for 1.1. And it would of course be released to the public after that (as long as the one doing it accepts it)
(if inapropriate or only good over at job board group, tell me)
