    Perhaps I shouldn’t have so gleefully stolen sambauer’s magic clickable url function. I just remembered that I have to go over to bbpress forums and ask his help with some xmlrpc stuff in bbpress.

    Maybe he won’t notice (shhhh…)

    I spoke to soon. On my test dev environment, a topic posted on the forum DOES show up in site wide activity. damn. now I need to figure out how I broke that!

    The above instructions on how to ‘solve’ the whacky chars and format stripping that is going on is just a stopgap solution really. We need to filter the text that goes into a post and that comes out of a post. We need to filter the text coming over and going to bbpress.

    We need that. This stuff is in core and we shouldn’t be screwing with it like this. I’m gonna just create a ticket that outlines the problems with text i/o in and around bp, mu and bbpress.

    The bbpress side of things needs some additional filtering. When stuff comes thru xmlrpc lots of things are escaped out and they are going directly to the db like that. Bad. Then when they come back out and get sent to bp, bp un-escapes them on this side. That leaves those of us who use bbpress as bbpress with trash in the db from the xmlrpc transport.

    Gotta fix that too.

    Don’t paste code on the forum please, you should edit this variable $bp at the start of the file

    Best bet is create a ticket for this in https://trac.buddypress.org/ with the login credentials from this forum so that Andy knows he is breaking something again ;)

    These are great issues to bring up on the buddypress mailing list and I encourage you to do it. I do not develop WPMU or Buddypress and these are just my opinions. This is just background information as well. WPMU is known to be extremely server intensive as is.

    Right now, most scaling solutions have been implemented for WPMU and the database structure that is already developed and in place. Mainly, blog sites like wordpress.com and edublogs.org. They have implemented multi-database solutions where the request gets analyzed for the blog hash and directed to the proper database and the connection only occurs to the database that houses that data. Databases can reside on any server in any location.

    Images are also housed in directories created through the blog hash as well. This also allows you to have multiple image directories in multiple locations if you wanted. Some even offload some of their images to 3rd party services like S3.

    At present time, AFAIK, there is no solution for spreading around the buddypress data. It hasn’t been addressed yet.

    I am not going to argue and say this is the most ideal circumstance or setup. There are plenty of discussions on scaling both in the WPMU forums as well as in the WPMU Advanced Forums as well as on the WPMUDEV Premium Forums. Not to mention the WP Hackers list is also a great resource from the real developers and hackers of WP in general.

    Buddypress, like WPMU, are open-source communities and all input is not only welcomed, it is encouraged! Feel free to add anything that you feel would be better. I am sure Andy is welcome to hearing all feedback if you know a better way to do something.

    My previous comment on this topic was purely my opinion on how the current setup could be scaled based on my experience with already ongoing projects. Right or wrong, it is just my opinion.

    You’ve to copy the same function for wires 2 activity and just changing name

    Oh ya. In my travels for the above, I found the magic little function in bbpress for magic links:

    bb-includes/functions.wp-core.php

    function make_clickable()

    line 274

    I gladly stole it, copied it over to my favorite php file today ‘bp-forums-filters.php’ renamed it my_damn_make_clickable() and hooked it up to the bp universe with this underneath it:

    add_filter( ‘bp_the_topic_post_content’, ‘my_damn_make_clickable’);

    We got bbpress magic urls in posts!

    You of course would want to put that fn in a little utility plugin that runs in mu-plugins.

    Hey Mike. bp does a whole bunch of filtering before the post is sent to bbpress. About 1/2 dozen wp filters, then some bp filtering then it gets sent to bbpress. There is the bp helper plugin over on the bbpress side that does some more filtering, bbpress gets it finally and stores it. Evidently xmlrpc doesn’t want normal <> type tags so they get stripped out, replaced with [] tags instead for the trip to bbpress. To be replaced on the bbpress side with normal <> tags. Evidently we can’t have special chars such as single quotes, double quotes, ampersands and other things making the trip so bp escapes or converts them to something else for the xmlrpc trip.

    When these whacky little escaped and converted chars get to bbpress they are just stored.

    Viewing a bp created post in bbpress is ugly.

    But we’re not in bbpress were in bp where when we send our post from bp to bbpress it gets the post from bbpress unconverts, unfilters and unescapes all that stuff to display as the post we just sent.

    During this process the html markup that should be allowed like paragraphs and bold are stripped out somewhere along the line for display in bp even if they have successfully made this round trip unscathed.

    Now we’re gonna talk about excerpts which have another filtering process applied to them. No we’re not. No I’m not. If you really care, which I don’t anymore, after 4 hrs of tracking this wp action, filter insanity across two pieces of software and several transport mechanisms then you could:

    Comment out line: 741 in bp-core.php bp_create_excerpt()

    ‘strip_tags()’

    Comment out line: 41 in bp-forums-filters.php bp_forums_filter_decode()

    ‘wp_filter_kses()’

    You get excerpts in group forums and posts in group forums that look normal. You could probably copy these fns and do the approved action/filter thing. You could. I personally take great pleasure in deleting the offending lines at this point. :)

    I’m kinda guessing you are talking about getting bbpress and mu configured to share user tables and sessions.

    EDIT: the above was also posted in what seemed to be a topic at random on the bbpress forums.

    Hey, I’m running http://www.pozlife.com. It’s a community for people affected but HIV and AIDS. I’m an activist :)

    I just finished ironing out the basics, and its a very limited BP install – no groups, no blogs, no access to the dashboard for non admins. They do have member profiles, and flickr for more photos. I’ve also integrated my wpmu DB with BB press for seamless logins.

    I’m going to add more stuff when people request it, but for now I think I can start to invite people to use it!

    I’m really thankful for all the help I’m receiving via the forums! Keep up the good work.

    Did you use the same e-mail address that you used to register for this forum? I believe you maybe able to list multiple e-mail address under gravatar, so you may need to use the one which you registered for this forum with.

    Clarification and more INFO:

    Sometimes you feel better when you find the same problem on the test site!

    Here’s what’s happening (there too)

    When a message or forum post is initially sent (no manual page refresh) BP puts escape characters everywhere. If you manually reload the page (any browser) the messages/posts are reformatted and the characters removed. I guess the good news is my users are noticing as much (only when they submit.

    If you dig around the forums you’ll find the rationale behind this, which is that it’s much easier to scale a site with this database structure than storing all user information in a limited number of tables.

    wardeh, sorry it took so long to get back to you. Been busy. From what I gather all wpmu and bp functions are available. However none of the actions and filters on the mu side are in effect. I’m still not sure what that means. Just something I’ve read.

    I don’t know if this deep integration is even what I want. I know it’s problematic at the moment. I think it’s going to take some time for sambauers and the gurus at bbpress to work out the kinks. I generate enough problems on my own. I’d like to keep the problems to *me*. I have a chance of fixing those. ;)

    I do know that xmlrpc works *now*. That’s what bp is using for the bp-forums component. Loading all of mu just to get at a few functions is kinda overkill. I think what I’m gonna do is create a couple of more xmlrpc methods on the wpmu side that will be called from bbpress. Such as:

    ‘get_all_group_forums’ – gets all bp groups that have forums and the forum id so that read-only-forums and hidden-forums can be automagicly configured. My plan is to configure all public group forums read-only and private and hidden groups hidden-forums.

    ‘get_all_group_members’ – Foreach group with forums get the members of that group and automagicly configure an override for each group member in that forum.

    So from the bbpress side to configure read-only and hidden-forums, we get all the groups that have forums and then all the members of those groups and make the two bbpress plugins work with that info. Should be enough.

    Using xmlrpc is better than loading all of wpmu just to do those two things. Especially since this deep integration is still flaky.

    xmlrpc has added benefits. It’s way cooler. ;) My forums don’t have to reside on the same server as my bp/wpmu install. I keep hearing rumblings, rumorings and hintings about xmlrpc. It’s kinda like sleeping and lurking. Getting ready for something. Comments by wpmu gurus about xmlrpc privately, Andy relying on it for forums. Something’s brewing.

    I don’t know what the purpose of leaving it there is. Gotta be a reason. You might ask over at the mu forums. Perhaps it gets removed after a period of time? As a site admin I don’t want people signing up getting deleted by me and then signing up again? Dunno.

    This is off topic for this thread. Sorry.

    @slaFFik I would check that you saved the right information in your WPMU admin for the forum user and that you have pingbacks and xmlrpc checkboxes on in bbPress. As well, you can’t have .htaccess blocking of your forums or it will not work. You can’t use the original force login plugin for bbPress (not mine) or it will not work.

    You also have to make sure that you disable the forum for a group and then enable it after each and every change you make to try and get this working. If you enable it and then change more things it will not work. So basically, if it isn’t working, check over and change things to make sure it has the ability to work and then disable/enable the forum for a group. If you enable it and it isn’t working and then you change a setting so that it would work, but don’t disable forum posting and then re-enable, it still won’t work.

    Hopefully that isn’t too confusing, but as long as all the settings are there and your WPMU install has access to the bbPress xmlrpc.php file, it should work. There is no doubt that Andy will eventually be doing more for the forums side of things, but it might be a couple of months.

    Wish I had a magic wand to get everyone’s forums working, but really it boils down to triple checking all the settings and keep disabling/enabling forums for a group until it works.

    As for the WPMU 2.7 download (before it is released), go to the bottom of the following page for the link to the zip.

    This post maybe a little more clear, as it has a full working music player.

    #1, the 2 is priority of the filter.

    #2, I have been lazy and just made everything inside of the “social details” group active links. In the future I maybe validating them with some regular expressions or substring checking.

    #3, check for an @ and at least 1 period in the string and no spaces? There are some very complex regular expressions which can validate e-mail addresses, but regular expressions are slower then substrings.

    Those “steps” are for using the buddypress code, ie xml-rpc communication inside of groups. If you theme the general bbpress install to match your buddypress site then you won’t need to enable xmlrpc on the general site, just do the intergration.

    I think someone will develop a modification of the groups, to be a general group pretty soon. If this is the case, then you would need to do those steps for both bbpress installs.

    Hope that makes sense,

    Thanks Brad,

    I is still not clear in my mind the difference for buddypress in group forum and site wide forum configuration

    Should i still do these steps?

    1) you have bbpress installed and a new user created on the “bbPress” side which you granted “administrator” rights by the keymaster

    2) you copy the “buddypress-enable.php” plugin out of the bp-forums folders and copy it into your /my-plugins/ folder (create if it doesn’t exist) so it is /my-plugins/buddypress-enable.php

    3) Enable the plugin through your bbPress administration side for plugins

    4) Edit “settings” to enable xmlrpc and pingbacks (both)

    5) edit your bb-config.php and just before the closing php call at the bottom of the page put:

    $bb->bb_xmlrpc_allow_user_switching = true;

    Do you still do these steps? Or skip these steps and just installed the bbpress and do common wordpress integration like cookie and user integration?

    Thank you
