    Hello Roger,
    Yes I am sure that i set up that correctly $curauth->ID, is just a number….

    ok… as I guess you know, modifying the core code isn’t a good solution!

    Am not sure why your original code isn’t working, as the later $r = wp_parse_args( $args, $defaults ); call should overwrite user_id with the one you supplied anyway.

    Did you check that $curauth->ID was set correctly?

    My network is a bunch of baby boomers selling crafts. I teach them how to be a merchant more effectively. Their stores on Artfire.com has a widget per seller where they can add a rapid cart, shopping window or a collection. All the code is clean and safe, no other code will be allowed. I’m aware of the spammer risks..been there, done that.
    The field should look similar to a blog post editor or text widget. Besides, the rapid cart code won’t work unless a shortcode is made by adding the script to the widget area and then shortcode for it in the field. This is why I’m wondering if the multisite is a better fit, harder, but better fit for what I want to offer.
    The Ning sites had pages for members like such. They were drag and drop fields with the ability to accept code. Like a comment box might. This is what I need for members. I already have a member approval mechanism installed. They have to attend the basic instructions of how to blog, to be able to use the field I need made. A sign of who they are.

    It’s dangerous to allow code to be entered into profile fields. Why HTML?

    David

    Previously, the “email” field in the profile for members created a ‘mailto:’ link. Since the update to 1.5.7, the link is now a search, like other fields in the profile. Oddly, it outputs the escaped html in the email field that includes the mailto link.

    example output: http://pastebin.com/SwC1YmSx (support forum here was formating it – even in backticks – added to pastebin)

    Any thoughts on this? I looked in the back end and did not see a means for customizing the field as an email field, only text

    Greetings code monkeys. I’m new here, but not to WordPress. I have been searching hard and long for a plugin with no avail. So I’m asking for a mod. I need a visual editor, wysiwyg editor if you will for the member profiles on my buddypress site. Each profile info page has your typical fields I have created: facebook url, twitter id, website, about me, etc…but I need to give them an html field where they can add a small snippet of script.

    Now, I am still learning php, brand spanking new at it, but still, learning the basics. I don’t have a dedicated server yet or the skills to run a cpanel on limited help from my host. I wondered if it would be better to run buddypress on WordPress MS(mulitsite) install instead. I only have about..147gb of server space so I will eventually have to move it over to a dedicated server(heard that sucks)

    In any case, I need a hand or advice on the mod versus moving to multisite.
    If the mod adding a wysiwyg front end editor on profiles for BP is easier, then how to??

    Site is still in tweeking mode..but you can take a peek if you choose: http://artfirelink.com

    Hello,
    I have been trying to find a way to create a dynamic multi-tier select box in the registration page and the xprofile edit page.

    For example:
    3 select boxes in which the selection choice of the current select box influences the contents of the next text box.
    I.E:
    Select your location:
    Select box #1> Australia
    (on change select box #2 is populated)
    Select box #2> New South Wales
    (on change select box #3 is populated)
    Select Box #3> Sydney

    There is currently no support for this specific feature, or any custom programmable fields (from what I can see searching through the actions and filters).

    I propose that there should be an action in the xprofile loop that executes when the field type is some ‘custom’ field. This field may produce a DOM element with a given ID/name so that it can be easily found through javascript. The loop may then (as it does to other fields) call the ‘pb_{field name}’ action in which the programmer links any JS to the element.

    I have a very real need for this feature, and in the meanwhile I am trying to implement it myself by hooking onto the ‘xprofile_template_loop_end’ action and displaying the HTML and linking it manually. However I cannot find any suitable filters to modify the SQL to add this custom field to the database. Can anyone recommend anything to solve this in the meanwhile? (Without editing the BP core files)

    Feedback appreciated.
    Thank you

    I’m trying to customize the profile header a bit but I think it only displays raw text, not other filed types.

    I saw this at http://bp-tricks.com/snippets/displaying-certain-profile-fields-on-your-members-profile-page/

    BuddyPress can display checkbox fields fine as a list in the profile, but it can’t if I list it manually? If I do, it just says “Array” which isn’t appealing.

    Is there any way to pull/display checkbox fields or multi-line select using a line or two of code like that? Thanks.

    @karmatosed I had seen that but didn’t see an answer on how to do what I’m trying to do. I need a live validation to show the user whether or not their entry is a valid url for facebook or twitter.

    I think https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/validating-a-url-from-xprofile-field/ may provide a good starting point. If I am wrong though please let me know and I’ll take a look.

    I’m taking both a facebook and twitter url from my users so I can create links so I need to validate the url’s they submit. I found a nice little function to help me do that.

    `function validate_url(url)
    {
    if (/^(https?://)?((w{3}.)?)twitter.com/(#!/)?[a-z0-9_]+$/i.test(url))
    return ‘valid’;

    if (/^(https?://)?((w{3}.)?)facebook.com/.*/i.test(url))
    return ‘invalid’;

    return ‘not a valid link’;
    }`

    My question is how I can use this to check the url during profile edit and registration? I moved the bp template files to my child theme and started fooling around with the edit template under profiles but couldn’t really get anywhere. Any ideas on the best way to do this?

    Are you referring to the profile fields or the tabs?

    Hello! I just upgraded to 1.5.7 from 1.5.6. My site now has the following error on it:

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function bp_get_profile_field_data() in /home/craftcore/craftcore.ca/wp-content/themes/craft1/single.php on line 53

    Example article with the error: http://craftcore.ca/2012-07-27-welcome-to-my-closet/

    My activity feed is now blank.
    My member list is now blank.
    My individual member profiles are blank.

    Needless to say, my site is completely broken.

    My site relies extensively on extended profile fields. Did something change with bp_get_profile_field_data() ? I read in the changelog that it was a minor update involving the sanitization of input… I use this function on every page of my site to determine if the user has certain needs….I really need it to work!

    Here is an example of how I use the extended profle info outside of the profile (nothing fancy here):

    `

    • Follow <a href="http://twitter.com/”>@ on Twitter.
    • `

      (If they filled in a certain field, display that field. In other cases, I make variables true or false to determine if ads should display, if certain content should display, etc.)

      How can I use bp_get_profile_field_data() ?

      Thank you! I hope someone can help me…I’d really like to go back to 1.5.6, but I can’t find the files to download to revert back…

    Like Juan mentioned, XProfile already autolinks various profile fields.
    eg. http://testbp.org/members/johnjamesjacoby/profile/

    Check out the links in the profile page. They will automatically redirect to the members directory with the search term.

    It might not fit your spec exactly, but maybe it can give you some pointers.

    The BP Profile Search plugin also enhances the xprofile search a bit as well.

    I think that depending on the final result you want to achieve, there are already a few tools that will get the work done. For example: if you want to mention your users, you can use de bp labs plugin that will add the “autocomplete” feature to the mentions for more usability (also could be used vía comments for mimicking the picture-tagging like Facebook). In the other hand, you can use profile fields to let members “tag” themselves on a different number of topics… etc.

    Maybe if you tell us what would you use it for we can think of a posible way to achieve that :)

    Hello,

    I am using the Salutation WP/BP-Theme. So far I really like that theme, so I don’t want to change that – but I would like to change the way the buddypress user profiles look…

    I would like to align the fields like here: http://www.hmag.com/members/simon/
    Right now it more looks like this: http://para.llel.us/themes/salutation-wp/members/sweetbro/profile/

    Where and how can I do that – I am a little experienced with php and WP but new to buddypress.
    Thanks,
    Streidl

    BuddyPress comes with a default “Name” field in the Extended Profile components. Are you using the Extended Profile component; have you renamed the default Name field, and what are you using that field for?

    Hello Fellows,

    We are running a buddypress based website on fxbootcamp.com. We offer live forex training using omnovia live rooms. Using omnovia API we offer SSO to premium members. The requirement of SSO API is member’s First Name, Last Name and Email address. As soon as a member update his/her profile following fields automatically removes from website.

    1. First Name
    2. Last Name
    3. Nickname

    This makes our SSO broken. Is there any solution available for problem?

    Thank You

    Hello,

    registration process has nothing to do with BP, it’s WP stuff. For some technical answers to your question, be inspired by reading here:
    http://www.esecurityplanet.com/open-source-security/top-5-wordpress-vulnerabilities-and-how-to-fix-them.html

    To avoid robot resgistration, there is nothing definitve to do at this time. But to get sure you don’t get a robot in your user list, you can add a mandatory field to your registration via custom profile fields.
    For example, “city”. Because this field is custom, no robot will fill it correctly. And most will not fill it at all. Each subscription with “doe” as city name or empty city field can be banned and/or erased from your DB. This will calm down spam activities for a while. The price of this is a constant admin work. But consider that a daily managed site is lesser spammed than a site with randomised webmastering each 31th february… And a site with 50 000 unique visitors will be more attacked that a 70 hits/day site. Just the price of glory, nothing to do with buddypress. [exit] ;-)
