In reply to: How do I remove topic tags from BP forums?
bullieverMemberI deleted the spam posts but the tags stayed…I don’t see how to delete them.
I also deleted the spam groups, and yet it still counts 28…
Seems like either the software or me is missing something to control this..

HenryParticipantThanks – I removed that from the htaccess file, fwiw. With Registration Options back on it still leads to a blank page. Not sure why this would suddenly happen when it was working fine. The site’s unusable w/out it, given the spam.

r-a-yKeymasterI was able to sign up successfully as “raytest”.
One thing I encountered on my first try is it would redirect me to die-spammers.com.
I’m guessing you have a snippet in your .htaccess that does this.December 30, 2011 at 10:05 pm #127103In reply to: [resolved] Can’t find my Topics after I post them
@mercimeParticipantYou’re welcome
Going through this extra step prevents spammers’ stuff, if any, from appearing in our activity streams since almost of all of them don’t change display namesDecember 30, 2011 at 7:17 am #127077Paul Wong-GibbsKeymasterIt could be that the emails are being marked as spam, or are being throttled by your server when you try to email them.

acesParticipantIf the emails were not picked up by spam or junk mail filters, then your webhosting may need an extra plugin.
See: BuddyPress isn’t sending out emails (eg. activation emails, email notifications) in https://codex.buddypress.org/troubleshooting/frequently-asked-questions/#register
and / or: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/ (which has a useful debug feature)

December 15, 2011 at 9:55 pm #126426modemlooperModeratorIt’s not an easy fix. You need various plugins to block spam but as stated above people are earning pennies to sign up to blogs. Best defense is a strong offense. Do as much as you can. Spam is a fact of life when running social sites.
Install my BuddyPress verified plugin and you can easily manage your spam accounts. I’m adding a feature in the next update that will deactivate an account automatically if that account posts too much if they are too new.
Core BP committer Paul is adding askimet filtering to the activity stream. Everyone knows spam is an issue and it’s being dealt with as best it can.
December 15, 2011 at 9:23 pm #126422mbiernatParticipantI have tried everything A to Z to stop spam registration. They all work for a while, but as the site grows it is overwhelmed. I think David100351 is correct people fill out the registration and hand it to bot drones. If anyone has successfully got this under control for a big site let me know as it makes it more work than it is worth.
WordPress is brilliant with anti-spam but have not had the same results with Buddypress. I am thankful for all the work people have done with BuddyPress and know they will say it is an MU problem, but I just want to use BuddyPress without spending so much time fighting spam. Anyone else tried wangguard?December 12, 2011 at 8:37 pm #109446Jose ContiParticipantHi @drwebstein
Try again WangGuard (https://buddypress.org/community/groups/wangguard/)
We have added several detection systems to WangGuard server.
Now blocks 99’99% splog
December 12, 2011 at 10:38 am #126158In reply to: Activation Key not being emailed
smartmwpParticipantI am having the same problem and I tried to do a test registration today. I have checked the spam folder to see if I get any activation key, but no we don’t, just the account activation mail. I activated my account using the link in the email.I was redirected to the activation key page too. Copy pasting the key from the activation link does not work. I tried to play a trick, I logged in using the username and pwd I used during the registration and it worked. I could open my profile page and upload avatar and add friends without entering the activation key. I don’t know why this is happening, and this can be a turn off for people trying to register on the site and something should be done about this. Thanks in advance for any helpful tips!

modemlooperModeratorDeleting user will remove all activity, marking user as spammer will hide activity.
December 9, 2011 at 2:27 pm #125931BrimfulofParticipantIt’s actually pretty simple. It’s explained very briefly in the plugin’s installation page: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-export-users/installation/
Step-by-step:
1. Download the plugin to your computer.
2. Unzip it and open the file bp-export-users.php in a text editor (notepad, notepad++, gedit, etc.)
3. Find these lines:
$this->wp_fields = array(
'ID',
'user_login',
#'user_pass',
'user_nicename',
'user_email',
'user_url',
'user_registered',
#'user_activation_key',
'user_status',
'display_name',
'spam',
'deleted');
4. Add the names of any custom WordPress user fields you want in ‘inverted commas’ before the closing bracket ) making sure you put a comma in between the fields. E.g. ‘deleted’, ‘custom field’, ‘custom field2’)
5. Find the lines:
$this->bp_fields = array(
'Name',
'Telephone',
'Job Title',
'Organisation',
'Region',
'Primary Discipline',
'Grade',
'A bit about you',
'twitter',
'flickr');
6. Add the names of any custom BuddyPress (xProfile) fields you want to export in the same way.
7. Save the file.
8. Zip the folder.
9. Install the plugin in your WordPress installation using the upload method.
And you should be away.December 7, 2011 at 11:45 am #125742In reply to: What Can Cause A User To Be Marked As A Spammer?

Yes, the forum is definitely broken and it is very hard to navigate.

November 13, 2011 at 7:23 am #124294In reply to: Fraudulent members
@mercimeParticipantKnow that when you open up your registration for anyone on single WP or WP multisite, whether you have BuddyPress or not, you will get spammers and sploggers. Only “closed” or by-invitation-only sites have escaped this curse completely.
There have been different solutions using plugins and techniques to prevent this but these bots and humans spammers/sploggers are relentless. Search online and you’ll get many answers/methods

November 7, 2011 at 2:46 pm #123912thegblogMember@Flora1234, not sure if you’re a spammer or something, but I think you’ll want to start your own forum post.
Is there anything anybody can tell me about what’s happening here, I’m raring to get this thing going on my site :>
November 5, 2011 at 11:46 pm #123843Paul Wong-GibbsKeymasterSeveral ways, but check out this plugin: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/unconfirmed/
To disable activations (I would strongly recommend against this – it’d let spammers access your site much more easily), put this code somewhere, maybe in bp-custom.php:
`add_action( ‘bp_core_signup_send_activation_key’, ‘__return_false’ );`

Paul Wong-GibbsKeymasterIt is in bp_activity_recurse_comments() in bp-activity-templatetags.php line 647 ono. (In 1.5 we moved it out to a theme template, where it belongs).
