    Hi @Bpisimone –

No worries – I’ve been using Filosofo Remove Dashboard plugin from wordpress. And I fixed the above issue by adding:

    if (preg_match(‘#wp-admin/?(.*)?$#’,$_SERVER) && (‘index.php’ != $menu[$page][2])) //send everything packing
    wp_redirect(get_option(‘siteurl’));

Around line 53 – just below the index.php redirect.

    Hope that helps.

Now.. back to our regularly scheduled GroupBlog question ;)

OK. I know this is not inherent only in Buddypress, but is a larger philosophical question that Buddypress has the power to Revolutionize!:

What is the difference between an Activity Post, a Forum Topic, or a Blog Post? And I’m not talking schematic / programmatic differences, I’m talking at the basic fundamental.

To illustrate, let us play a guessing game. Which of the three am I describing?

    1) A user submits some information / a story / a bit of news / a question
    2) Other users respond with comments / answers / reactions / more questions

I find that many users to my Buddypress site (a captive / motivated audience mind you) get confused – posting forum topics in Activity streams, or blog posts in forums… Are they just plain ignorant, or are the unwashed masses just more enlightened than us system Admins? Are we trying to artificially create a difference where there is none? Or is the difference there – Buddypress is just not making it clear enough?

Permit me to add fuel to the fire —
    1) I find Buddypress.org’s support forums to be virtually un-navigable. Compare that to bbpress, or even the WordPress support forums – which are clean, intuitive, and user-friendly (and in the case of bbpress, dying a slow death). So Buddypress is not a forum. But it has that potential.
    2) Buddypress hides blogs in the sea of sameness — basically taking over your entire WordPress site and subjugating the blog to the needs of the community theming. So Buddypress is not a Blog.
    3) Buddypress theming is so complex that only the brave dare tread there. Whereas I could bang out a unique wordpress theme in under an hour, Buddypress essentially locks you in to a handful of themes or days of tweaking…

Don’t get me wrong. I think Buddypress is AWESOME! And has so much potential. I think, as others have pointed out, it suffers from an Identity crisis. So, what is Buddypress?

Buddypress is a VITAL but SEPARATE part of the blog community. Buddypress is a way to connect. It is NOT a blog. It is NOT a forum – but a way for Forum users and Blog readers to connect with one-another. So – why not take that idea, and put Buddypress in its own room – the cocktail party happening next to the lecture seminar and just down the hall from the AA meetings.

Proposal (largely a strategy of theming):
    1) Blogs are blogs – let them look like blogs.
    2) Forums are forums – let them look like forums (subjects, topics, you know… like forums)
    3) Buddypress is Buddypress – when people enter the social area of buddypress- lets knock their socks off.

But trying to mesh them all under one Tabbed upon sub-tabbed menu system only whitewashes the whole deal into one bland sameness. And confuses our users.

Discuss amongst yourselves. I think I posted this in the right place.

** Forgive me, I wanted to post this on the What is Buddypress forum topic, but I couldn’t find it again… (see fuel #1)

After testing and deciding to go live with BuddyPress, I’m suddenly seeing a lot of problems that never happened during testing. The most frustrating of which is random logouts. I seem to be logged out every time I add a new group or forum topic. Beyond that, the logouts just seem to be random. I did enable BuddyPress on a different WordPress install, but the files/settings/version/etc match between the two environments. I always test first in on and then upload the exact same files to the live site once done. Has anyone else been experiencing random logouts? Any ideas where to start looking?

Sounds like good advice………Really all we are want is a good Profile Display Page, and an easy floating Chat maybe later on, Profiler Plug-in is the only one out there, and all of sudden it did not list our last few new members, we deleted it and and reinstalled it, and the new members are still not in there.
All the social plug ins for wordpress are a mess, we tried Theme My Profile Plug In, Mingle, BP………We get them to function all right, but then after a few days, we start having problems with Registrations, its always the registrations.
There is a standard that has been set by Facebook, we just cant touch it. That is how they grew so big.
We finally found a fairly decent User email Plug in.
Wordpress is really starving for a plug in this area.
    Anyway thanks for the Advice.

It is rather easier to work with if you’re starting a site than if you’re modifying an existing one, I’d imagine. I’m sure you’ll find other ways to engage people. (I did briefly look at Mingle, but can’t say as I feel strongly one way or another about it.)

I ran into a couple of posts about usng the Google libraries API on WordPress as a CDN… Where it supports:

    ?Dojo
    ?jQuery
    ?jQuery UI
    ?MooTools
    ?Prototype
    ?script.aculo.us
    ?swfobject

I installed this via the Google Libraries Plugin and it seems to be working fine. What’s your thoughts on using this in conjunction with Total Cache CDN? I read one article where it stated that using the both together further decreased page load speed….

Has anyone had luck installing Buddypress on an IIS server?

If so can you help with my install? Tried three times no luck.
I have a complete and working install of wordpress on the same site and would like to put buddypress on a sub directory with its own wp install and database.

I have a couple of issues.

    1. we cannot get the sidebar appearing at the side of page content, in buddypress pages. It appears below the content. Have tried the fixes on here, to no avail.
    Suggestions Please.
    2. when we click on activity of any sort from the buddypress menu, it pulls the last wordpress post as the page title.
So example: say I am looking at: http://sitehelp.com.au/members/blue/activity/
Then the title tag gets used from last post we made.
    Any suggestions.
Title tag for above link appears as so: ShineTime: jQuery & CSS3 Gallery With Animated Shine Effects

The main issue is getting the sidebar sorted.
Also need to fix CSS because form fields are virtually invisible and the text is kinda skew wiff.

I have installed BuddyPress on my local machine for testing (PC with Windoze XP, Apache and PHP) I have been testing WordPress instillation on this machine forever and never had a problem. Anyway I installed WordPress 3.0 and then the current version of BuddyPress. I changed the permalinks as required (Changed to numeric) and then went to check out the instillation. The only thing that works is the home page. I can click on any link I like and all I get is a “Not Found” message.

    Ideas anyone?

    My experience with buddy press
we could not get any of this to work right, would not let people log in, was adding its own password, all kinda of crazy stuff………. I was disappointed, it was a mess, really was not user friendly, now I used the Template package, that may be why.
When we got a plug in update we had to deactivate we had to disable BP, then reactivate, and reset all the settings. Just Not there yet.
Someone really needs to get this socialization of WordPress going, I would donate if someone could get one really going….with a good webmail floating chat…clean user-online indicator, easy friend network. I guess this is pretty tough to build, I don’t have a dog in the race.
Just to many issues for me

I had two users apparently never get the activation email. (One is me, so I know it didn’t go through, but the other attempt belongs to someone I don’t know. They MIGHT have simply never opened the email.) My first attempt used a hotmail (live.com) address. The other person’s is a personal domain.

I thought I was having a problem with ALL activation emails, but when I tried a new user registration with a gmail address, it worked. I suppose I should test new user creation with some more email addresses and providers.

In any case, if you don’t have tons & tons of new users, one thing you can do while “we” figure this out is to check the Users list under the WordPress settings (from wp-admin), as even unactivated users will show up there. Then visit any problem user in buddypress by manually typing in the address for their profile page (you know, something like http://www.example.com/members/USERNAME/). Then in the admin bar, you’ll find an option along the lines of “Admin Options->Mark user as not a spammer”. That’s probably not the exact text.

I am experiencing strange User Role behavior with Groupblog:

I created a private (or public) group and group blog (with links to the blogs front end) with default role pairings (user=author, mod=editor, admin=admin) — the blog was created successfully, and invitations were sent out.

But my subscriber had only a subscriber role on the MAIN BLOG — When they try access http://www.example.com/blog1/wp-admin they get sent to http://www.example.com/wp-admin/?c=1 (which incidentally kills my dashboard hide script…)

THEN, I changed the member/subscriber to moderator (by the groups admin page) and this gave them Author privileges… ON THE MAIN BLOG! No role for the group blog.

    WP: 3.0.1
    BP: 1.2.5.2
    Groupblog: 1.4.4

    Hi,
I am new to BuddyPress but do a bit of WordPress stuff, this is only a hobby and I create some themes and tutorials.

I installed BuddyPress and have created a twenty ten child theme, it is cheating a bit as I use the sliding menu plugin, modified it slightly for the child theme, rather than merging the menu code.

Well I have it working, and sort of styled to twenty ten, it is here as a download if anyone wants to have a look.

Thanks for looking and any feedback is welcomed.

    Hello,

I am in need of some help with 2 plugins for my wordpress/buddypress site, My site is aimed at kids aged 8-16 years old, as my daughter went on holiday with granparents, when she returned she wanted to use a well know social media site to keep in contact with her friends, worried about the content exposed to her i decided to have ago at creating my own, I am a Computer hardware/software engineer but not a programmer, I have tried all the social media script out there but when i found WordPress/Buddy press i loved it and have been using it for some time.

I need 2 thing for my site,
    1. i need a plugin for the registration/activation process that sends and e-mail to a parent/carer email address entered at sign up informing the parent/carer thier son daughter has joined my social network site, with a customizable e-mail template.
    2. when Date of Birth is entered i would like a plugin that refuses registration if date of birth works out to be younger or older that 8-16

I know regardless of what security you put in place you can not 100% stop wiredos trying to sign up but i am implementing the CEOP panic buttons throughout so kids can report inapropriate behaviour striaght to authorities, and i have knowledge as a parent to use discretion on content posted to the site, i can then make dessisions on weather to remove a user, i am also creating a parents section so if parents are worried they can contact us and we can look into thier childs content within the site. Parents can also use the CEOP button to report worrying behaviour. The loca media has also taken great interest in my project and are willing to give me interviews once the site is up and running as i want it,

Unfortunatly i don’t have much money to spend on this project as i fell ill a year ago and i have been unable to work since, i have started this project now and i want to see it through, you never know it may become famous lol, i am also looking into ways of making my site more entertaining.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and any suggestions or help is much appreciated

    @jmarino:
Well, there’s a plugin to restrict group creation. I’d start there: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-restrict-group-creation/

In the settings, you can auto-demote group creators to mods, so that’s good for what you mention. You can also separately determine who can make a public, private or hidden group. It doesn’t have a setting to restrict somebody who meets the threshold from creating more than one group, though. You’d have to work around that. Also, it has settings like minimum number of days as a member (of your BP site in general) before qualifying to create a group, but nothing built in that’d handle maximum number of days as a mod and then demote automatically.

Honestly? You’re looking for very specific and limited functionality. Since you already plan to manually add any additional mods, I’d consider just getting the necessary info from the user when s/he signs up for VIP membership, manually creating the group in the first place (use the Restrict plugin to keep anybody but a site admin from being able to do so), inviting the VIP member to join, and then setting him/her (and any friends) as mod.

As for the 1 year demotion, I’d just use a good calendar and set up an electronic reminder.

Low tech and not very automated, but that really seems like the route you’ll end up needing to go, unless you (or someone else) wants to create a fair bit of custom code–something you probably won’t find people offering to do for free.

    …

Not to be a total downer, but I’m having a bit of trouble imagining what enticement mod status would offer. Maybe I just haven’t toyed with it enough to see its utility in managing forums, but it doesn’t seem to provide much control over the group, at least…

Using WordPress 3.0.1 and Buddypress 1.2.5.

After a member signs up, they get a confirmation email, which they click on and are directed to sign in. But new members are also instructed with the following message:

    Activate your Account

Please provide a valid activation key.
    Activation Key: ___________

This can be ignored and new members are still signed up. Does anyone know what generates this message? Sorry if this is a repeat but I can’t find a solution.

Curious. I was convinced I had a similar problem, as I noticed one user marked spammer and then created my own test user but never received the activation email. HOWEVER, I just tried again using a gmail address instead of hotmail, and I got the activation email just fine. Suppose I’ll keep messing with this and check back in…..

I’m trying to use/test the Welcome Pack in particular, so….we’ll see.

Search for a plugin and then you will need to replace the navigation links in your header.php file with the code to call the plugins drop down menu. You can also add support for wp menus and then do the css or javascript coding to make it drop down.

Hi, I see that the wordpress menu selection doesn’t work with buddypress, so whats the simplest way to add drop-down menu to the default theme navigation tabs?

If you relied a lot on the BP 1.0 or 1.1 theme structure, then you’d need to install the BP Backwards Compatibility plugin:
    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-backwards-compatibility/

I should note I have no experience using this plugin whatsoever.

hnla is right; if your theme isn’t too custom, I would recommend building a new child theme of the bp-default.
