Hey, thanks, let me try that.
Hi All,
I’ve made some updates to the Group Docs plugin, and I’d love to get some testing/feedback. The biggest change is moving the document storage out of the plugin folder, which took more effort than I had hoped. I’ve also updated the activity stream for 1.2, removing some bugs along the way. All in all, very little has changed to the end user.
Also, if you care about your stuff, BACK UP YOUR DOCUMENTS BEFORE UPLOADING. The plugin will move docs from the old location to the new one, but if you do a one-click upgrade, your old docs could get deleted first.
You can find the latest version here (the 0.3-beta link; not the big orange button):
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-group-documents/download/
The only known issue (it’s kinda big): on buddypress 1.1.X installs, some types of files won’t display. They are instead redirected to a slightly more jumbled URL. If anyone knows a way around this, please let me know. It’s got me stumped (and is the main reason I’m creating this pre-release).
There are many more things I’d like to include soon (sorting, icons, ajax, tagging), but I’ve been short on time lately. Stay tuned for those in the future.
Cheers,
Peter
@corin-rules BuddyPress 1.2.x requires at least “Requires at least: WordPress 2.9.1” (regular or normal). This may or may not have anything to do with your problem, though you will find other problems running it on 2.8.
It’s already here. BP1.2 runs on WP standard.
I Read it somewhere.
This is exactly what I have been waiting for.
Hope Andy will make this second miracle to happen soon.
I am having the same issue. Both on the front end and in the admin area. Any of these links simply take me to the homepage of the blog.
- WordPress MU 2.8.6
- subdomain install
- installed in a sub directory
- a fresh install
- wordpress MU is functioning as normal before and after buddypress install
- Buddypress Version 1.2.1
- Did not upgrade buddypress
- No other plugins installed
- Using Buddymatic theme with a custom child theme, (though switching back to buddymatic default, coffe with friends or kubrick hasthe same issues)
- No modification of core files
- No custom functions in bp-custom.php
- Not running bbPress (yet, one thing at a time

- I have no server error logs afaik, but i do get this error when activating the plugin*
- The blog is currently hosted inhouse on a development server, I could request permission to reveal more details about this if requiered
* –
Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare bp_loaded() (previously declared in /home/astateofwriting/wordpress-mu/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-loader.php:54) in /home/astateofwriting/wordpress-mu/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-loader.php on line 55
BuddyPress -> Component Setup–>Let users create, join and participate in groups would seem to be for disabling Groups entirely, so that’s not it.
Not sure what I had in mind, there. I wonder if you can hook Buddypress permissions into Justin Tadlock’s excellent Members plugin (http://justintadlock.com/archives/2009/09/17/members-wordpress-plugin)
Basically I’d just disallow Subscribers (if that’s your default role) from creating groups, but I’d have to go digging to figure out how to do that….
I haven’t actually tried!
Thanks @r-a-y, using
global $bp;
if (isset($bp->current_component)) {
YOUR BP CSS/JS here
}
seems to load the BuddyPress stuff on normal WordPress posts & pages where as my longer version doesn’t, any other ideas?
Hi All,
I am converting a WordPress theme to use BuddyPress 1.2.x features.
I want to cut down on the page load time for normal WordPress blog posts & pages by only including the BuddyPress Ajax, JS & CSS while viewing those pages
Currently I am using
if ( bp_is_page( BP_ACTIVITY_SLUG ) || bp_is_page( BP_MEMBERS_SLUG )
|| bp_is_member() || bp_is_page( BP_GROUPS_SLUG ) || bp_is_group()
|| bp_is_page( BP_FORUMS_SLUG ) || bp_is_page( BP_BLOGS_SLUG ) ) {
load required ajax, css & js here
}
is there any better way for checking if we are currently viewing a BuddyPress page or am I missing out on any BuddyPress pages with this?
You can actually do just about anything in WordPress if you really know your stuff… so for me it comes down to usability. Joomla and Drupal both tend to be very complicated for the average (or even ‘expert’) user. For usability, no one comes close to WordPress… in my opinion.
Pages are for static content like “contact us”. They are organized and retrieved by a fixed hierarchy and cannot be tagged or categorized.
Posts are for topical content like news articles. They can be organized and retrieved in and a multitude of ways… by tag, category, date, month, etc. You can even setup a custom taxonomy to add custom metadata to posts… like for instance… if it were a movie site… cast, release date, genre, etc. By default… with most themes… the homepage will simply spit out a stream of your most recent posts. But again, you can customize things in a million different ways if you know your stuff.
Just install BP 1.2.1 on a single WordPress install 2.9.2 not MU with the new BP1.2 theme. The activity page doesn’t work (no updates) also under the member page when I try to post a new message I’m getting this error “There was a problem posting your update, please try again.”
Is it a permission issue somewhere? PHP or database settings?
Hi all,
I have BP 1.2 on a WPMU 2.9.1 install. (www.threesheetsnw.com). I’ve fairly successfully added BuddyPress to an existing WordPress child theme.
As an admin, I’ve created several blogs for other users. Under BP 1.1, when logged in, those users could see their blogs under the “My Blogs” navigation. Since the upgrade to 1.2, that no longer works.
As Admin, it works fine for me.
Any suggestions?
“In WP v3.0, WordPress MU will be merged with the single WP installation and there will be a migration path.”
Unless you are merging together more than one standalone WP install into one multisite network, in 3.0 there will be no need to migrate anything to turn on multiple blogs (ie; multiple sites).
If anyone stumbles on this thread, there is another thread where I have replied at length about this: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/activating-existing-users
The best solution at this time is something like Group Activity Notifications https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-group-activity-stream-subscription/. It does a bit more than what you’re asking for, and by default it has everyone subscribed to everything, but it does allow the user pretty fine-grained control over notifications.
We’re working to make the plugin more customizable, so that the site admin could choose to turn notifications off by default. Then it would work just like the way you describe.
it looks something like this on WordPress (not MU) install running BP 1.2.1-

@Scotm that codex page no longer gives details on tweaking the files, it just points to the plugin.
@maxell – when you set up the plugin it had instructions on page 3. You have to take the extra folders & files that are added to your theme, and make the divs & html match up to your original wp theme.
Supposedly even the New York Times is on WordPress, although they hide it well. Not sure if they still are.
