try registering for a username at wordpress.com and then try to login through the bbpress site

Oh, forgot to add…the permalinks don’t work in the translated versions either – i.e. on my test site http://www.lleidaonline.net/blog works in Catalan but http://www.lleidaonline.net/en/blog returns a page not found error (badly translated except (so far) in the English which I’ve corrected (a nice feature of TransPosh).

Don’t forget to click on the US English (I’m also trying to find/write a British English .mo file so I can put a British flag instead of American, since I’m in Europe (and English!).

The main reason I want to do this at all is to cater for the two local languages, Catalan and Spanish, but have English available too. I also found a neat plugin for setting a different back end language but only managed to get that to work using the Codestyling Localization plugin which I couldn’t get to work completely as I wanted either).

Just thought I’d add that in the hope it’ll help others – here’s the Transposh link FYI, which is not usually mentioned but simpler than the main ones.

I have related questions about the relationship between the WP tables and the BP tables, so I’d like to make sure that I understand the responses above.

I know that BP maintains user profile information separately from “wp_usermeta” (in “wp_bp_xprofile_data”, to be specific). BP provides functionality for modifying this information, but no way for putting “wp_usermeta” fields into the “edit profile” form.

So I think the answer to Peter’s question is that without *major* customization:

1. You have to be happy with user data being stored in a few different places

2. All user editable info must be in the tables created by BP

Is this correct?

BTW, what does the “Disable BuddyPress to WordPress profile syncing?” option do under BP General Settings in the admin page? Does this only apply to the username field?

bp does have built in support for this. If you can track down exactly when and where the avatars fail to load with it enabled it would help. Without being able to reproduce the problem in a specific area when this exact thing happnens or you do that thing, it’s impossible to track down the issues.

Try to reproduce the problem and post the results in trac as a bug.

First, make a test install of wpmu and buddypress. Then import your wordpress xml to the test wpmu install and see how it works (it normally works fine).

If you are satisfied with the results, then go for it.

http://wspinacze.pl/forum/ – I followed all your instruction and wordpress and buddypress are loaded (there is user avatar visible for logged in user) but there is no admin bar. any suggestions?

Please consider submitting it to the WordPress plugin repository, tagged BuddyPress, when you feel it is ready to go. I’m sure many people will find this useful.

I will be interested in using this plugin myself on a new site I’ll be developing in about 2 months.

Are you using the vbulletin bridge for WordPress?

One quick comment – vb is a much more feature rich forum than bbpress. But, tools have been created to nicely integrate bbpress with buddypress groups. So, you’ll need to figure out how to handle the forums. If most of your traffic will be coming from the forums, you may want to look more closely at vb’s social networking tools.

And then a friend told me that Bluehost just allowed a one click Buddy Press install.

I’m not sure why some ISPs keep trying to push a BuddyPress one-click install option. BuddyPress is not stand-alone software. It requries WPMU. So, at best, and if this was even practical, you would need to click twice–once to intsall WPMU then another time to install BuddyPress.

I would be wary of such claims. Also, be advised that some people have had issues with this in the past, so if you go that route and come here asking for support we will ask how you installed BuddyPress.

Remember, BuddyPress is just a big WPMU plugin. So, you can download and activate it via the WPMU’s admin menus. You don’t need a questionable one-click install.
